“The PSP is the best portable video gaming system - I...”

★★★★★

written by mero91 on 10/12/2006

The PSP is the best portable video gaming system - I think it beats the DS Lite. The PSP is so useful - it can have a camera, access to the Internet wirelessly, online play and free games as well.
So... if your a little confused by the PSP and DS - trust me the PSP is better, an example: The PSP's screen has about 17 million colors while the DS Lite only has around 65 thousand - big difference - also, who needs a touch screen on a gaming system?

“Forgive me if I am not as "woosey" about mine as some...”

★★★☆☆

written by jadedshade on 14/10/2006

Forgive me if I am not as "woosey" about mine as some people, but the simple fact is: It's just not the hand held PS2 we were all expecting.

However, the Sony PSP system does offer a high standard of portable gaming, and the games are generally quite pleasing to the eye.

The absence of a second analogue stick makes controlling characters in some games awkward and difficult. Of course, some of the responsibility does fall back on the game developer.

A great example of this awkwardness is in games like Splinter Cell: Essentials, Star Wars Battlefront II and Tenchu: Time of the Assassins.
Often the X, O, Square and Triangle buttons become a replacement for the second analogue stick (generally used to move your cursor for aiming), and it makes the game play clumsy due to the fact that pushing one of the buttons will often move your cursor too far.

Despite its flaws, I do like this system. It provides me with good quality entertainment on the move.

With it's compact design I was concerned that there was a lot of Micro Engineering just waiting to go wrong. However, Sony did a good job building this console, and I haven't had a problem with mine, and anyone I know that has had a problem is someone that has treated their PSP with the appropriate care.

Overall, this is a fun system. But if you are looking for a hand held PS2 experience, this just isn't it.

I disagree you can't compare a home based console with a handheld machine. You're not going to get the same experience. Sony have done an excellent job of beating Nintendo at their own game who have dominated hand helds for many years.

I don't really understand why you disagree with my review based on the fact I said it isn't the handheld PS2 we were told it was going to be in the beginning.
<br/>I still gave it a good review and I think it's a good system. Perhaps Sony didn't quite manage a handheld PS2 but they still did a good job, that is overall opinion.

“When I first heard about the Sony PSP, I just could...”

★★★★★

written by brains on 05/09/2006

When I first heard about the Sony PSP, I just could not wait to get my hands on it. It costs £180, but it was worth it. When I first purchased the PSP console I just could not wait to open it. In the box you get your PSP, a 32Mb memory stick, AC adaptor, battery pack, headphones with remote control, wrist strap, pouch, cloth, UMD software and printed materials.

The PSP main-screen is easy to get around. Once you switch it on you have to change a few settings like the time and date, but once it is ready you can play the games all you like until the battery runs out. The charge is a few hours, and the battery lasts about 4 hours. You may need a bigger memory card to load your PSP with pictures, music and films. To put music, films and pictures on the PSP you need a USB cable. You can buy a few of the games for about £35 when they're new. The graphics are superb on the PSP! The console has many of the controls of the PS2, except on the PSP there's only 1 analog stick; L and R instead of L1 and R1, L2 and R2. At first I thought that the analog stick was the speaker, but instead, the PSP's speaker is where the tiny little oval shaped things are.

There are many types of games, and many accessories coming out in the future, such as a 1.3 mega-pixel camera which slots on the top. I can't wait for it. Also, if someone has the same game as you, you can play multiplayer using Wi-Fi, and if you have internet, you can play online with someone else.

Good value for money and superb graphics. Definitely the king of handheld games consoles. Recommended. 10/10!

I got the Sony PSP for my OH for his birthday, and we're very impressed with it. He loves games like GTA and racing games, and even though I was concerned the screen size would be annoying, he says he doesn't notice it.

I personally like playing the old arcade games, and the poker one is really good. I am seriously amazed at the quality and speed of such a tiny console.

Overall, I am very impressed.

“The screen on the Sony PSP games console is very large...”

★★★★★

written by muchoman on 18/08/2006

The screen on the Sony PSP games console is very large for its size, and the graphics are to die for! The price has gone down this year to $200. The internet browsing is very cool, and it works well. Using the memory, you can upload movies, music and photo's easily. The games are great, and they work OK with the limited buttons. The movies are full length and have subtitles and different languages. It's very durable. I having dropped it on a hard wood floor and not even scratched it!

The memory is pretty expensive for the size, and the range of games isn't that great. Movies are a bit overpriced. The browser only has 3 tabs, and some pictures that are too large on the internet will not show up due to lack of memory.

You do get a lot of features for the price. I would recommend a screen guard for it due to the fact that it will get scratched without it. Look for updates on www.sony.com and trailers.

written by TwinCam on 17/07/2006

Can not believe some people dont like the PSP. I think the only people who hate it or dont rate it, are Nintendo DS owners, and Nintendo fanboys.
There is nothing wrong with the PSP or its games at all. The games are ps2 quality in terms of gameplay and graphics. Graphics are excellent, and the quality blows you away, playing movies also looks excellent, as the screens quality is amazing.
Battery life is OK I never get less than 4 hours gameplay, from any game. You can buy extra batteries, also new longer life batteries are coming out for the PSP.
The design and overall looks of a PSP are a thing of beauty, you don't feel embarrassed using it, its an adults system. At 23 I would be embarrassed to own a Nintendo DS.
Sound quality is excellent tho speakers are small and don't have much volume, but good enough I find.
Overall a excellent system, with the only bad thing is that they are a little expensive, but for all the technology you get, what would you expect?. It also looks the nuts a real adults toy, that's going to become a great icon like the iPod.
Buy one you wont regret it.

“I got a Sony PSP as a Christmas present last year. I...”

★★★☆☆

written by alialiali on 01/06/2006

I got a Sony PSP as a Christmas present last year. I was so excited, I loved my Playstation and Playstation 2 when I got them and I like to spend a few hours just chilling with a game. BUT almost straight away I found a fault. Maybe I'm just picky but I like to have a lot of light playing my game, and I was forever twisting around trying to find a decent amount to actually see the game. The screen is small and I always want to "push" the sides away so I can see a bit more. I know you can change camera angles but it ain't the same! The game choice is truly awful, there a hundreds of games for all other consoles and the brand new wonder toy from Sony appears to have about 50, of which 25 are complete rubbish. So onwards. If you want to use it for anything other than the odd game play you have to shell out for a more expensive memory card. Ok if you bought the giga pack, but if not that's a pretty pricey move. Otherwise, with my limited amount of saved info on it, I managed 2 songs and 1 video on it. Woohoo. Honestly, I love my Playstations and everything, but to me the PSP was a huge disappointment, and I'm only not selling it because my mum had a lot of trouble getting me one only 6 months ago and I don't want to seem ungrateful. Plus it was a present. However, my brother absolutely loves his and pretty much worships it, so it's maybe just me

“I bought my Sony PSP console as part of the giga pack,...”

★★★☆☆

written by pea88 on 05/05/2006

I bought my Sony PSP console as part of the giga pack, from LikSang.com
This saved me about fifty pounds on the cheapest English Sites, so was chuffed with my buy.
However, after about three months, for no apparent reason the on switch became "floppy" as if it wasn't attached to anything. I rang Sony and they told me to fix it they needed to send it to Japan as it was a Japanese model and quoted me 100 pounds. I kindly refused their offer. My friend fixed the problem, but then the electrics failed and by this point I had voided my warranty. I don't for one minute suggest that the PSP is a bad console, as it nothing short of brilliant. But I would strongly suggest buying it from the UK. I don't agree with Sony's policy on exchanges, as it would have cost me a hundred pounds, do something in Japan that could have been done anywhere in world, for a lot less than 100 pounds. Beware Internet shoppers

Now first of all. You said your analog stick broke in three days. You were probably just shuving it around to hard. It is very delicate. Secondly, memory cards are expensieve but look at ps2 memory cards also when they first came out it cost like 30 dollars. AND it didn't hold music, photos, and videos did it. Plus me and alot of other people play it at home. I play it every single day at my house. SO it is a good buy.

Right now this is all I can say about the PSP seeing as how I just purchased it. I don't have a wide range of games for it either. I mainly play Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. I definitely think that this is a good purchase.

★★★★☆

written by jazzRS360 on 19/04/2006

When it came to handheld gaming, it used to be the Gameboy from Nintendo that ruled this neck of the woods, but how times have changed. Sony, one of the major world players in technology, present us with the PSP, or Playstation Portable, to give it its full name.
It is the most powerful mainstream handheld out there, and it plays games which look as though they've been ripped straight out of the main TV consoles.
The PSP also plays many different media formats, and it can be a solid alternative to many multimedia devices on the market. Although the standard speakers are tinny and weak (as expected) these can be enhanced by more powerful speakers which don't cost much at all.
Games are superb on the whole, although you pay for the privelige. Unlike the Nintendo DS, the PSP games need external memory such as a memory card, and to get your hands on a decent sized one is going to cost you.
In short, the PSP is for those who are willing to spend a lot of money on portable gaming.
It isn't perfect though; frame rates can slow down and there are occassional sound bugs on some games, although these are gaming problems, not really problems to do with the console.
Many argue that the DS has way shorter load times, costs a lot less and offers as much fun, but the blunt truth is, if you want the real deal, this is it.
But with the territory comes a steep price tag which some may feel is unjust, and that includes accessories and software. But if you can afford all the necessary gizmos to make the best of this, then the Sony PSP is the portable don.

The PSP is worth every little penny. If you ever travel somewhere or sometimes feel like you don't have anything to do, buy it. And it's almost compulsary to buy a 1 GB memory card, som you can use the psp to watch movies. On 1 Gb you can fit 2 full legth movies and 1-2 episodes of a tv show, like The Simpsons OR 9 episodes. Don't use the speakers you get in the value pack, because most of the time the sound volume in them is to low. Don't forget to bring the charger.

★★★★☆

written by PhilipMc on 12/04/2006

Ah, the PSP! Something we kids of the 90's always dreamed of and never thought possible when we were button-basing away on Crash Bandicoot on the Playstation. But yes, it's true, it's a Playstation, and it's in your pocket!

First impressions when I opened the box? Wow. I of course - as always - am very impatient and had to have it on day one, and thus opening mine was the first one I had seen the flesh. Damn was it shiny, and that screen!

So a further 8 months down the line after the 'wow factor' has worn off what do I think? I still think it's superb. Disappointed? Slightly. Why? Simple, the games have not been, well, that great. Of course there was GTA, which is good and all, but what's so special about it now the PS2 is getting a port of it soon?

The games I currently own are, Toca Race Driver 2, FIFA 2006, FIFA Street 2, GTA: Liberty Cities, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Burnout. They are very enjoyable to play, however none of them are landmark titles for me, where's my GT4 Sony? Where, where, where?

Don't let it put you off though; you will enjoy the PSP, copy over a few videos and songs to watch/play in between games, it's a good little machine, go buy one!

I got my Sony PSP in October 2005, the only reason I got it was because I had a broken leg and so I wasn't going out much. It cost me £220 new and was worth it for the amount of time i spent playing on it. The screen is big and clear, the game play is second to none and it's way better than a DS!

It's not really worth the bother if you have a PS2, and I can't use mine on the train or in the car because it causes me to get motion sickness, as it would for most people I think! But if your stuck somewhere, bored, you will be glad you have it to pass the time!

I bought my Sony PSP 2 months ago. It is stylish, has sharp graphics and sound. Great games. I have just got hold of a 2Gb memory stick online too, which was much cheaper than the high street prices.

The only downside is that you are pretty much left to your own devices as the manual isn't much use! Great entertainment value though, and if you get the additional software, you can put movies and video clips etc. onto the memory card.
