“I got my 1st and only Kirby G5 8 years ago 2nd hand...”

★★★★★

written by on 21/10/2009

I got my 1st and only Kirby G5 8 years ago 2nd hand from a mate who worked at a vacuum cleaner shop, he sold german cleaners new. He told me that the Kirby was still the best vacuum he had ever seen or used. Several other friends got new dysons, for around about $1000 NZ, all of them have broken down, and have been replaced, that 4 broken plastic dysons.
There are a few problems with the Kirby, the bags are really expensive, they are heavy, its hard to get into corners, but there are so many plus points that make up for the bad points.
I wouldn't advised older people to get a kirby, as they are a bit heavy, but if you have pets, ( i have 3 long hair cats, and there fur sticks like glue to the carpet), the kirby is the best I have used, and I have used many cleaners. The head light is great too, designed for stairs I was told, I can see into the dark corners.

About a year ago, I was told about an new upright, wet n dry, I went and spoke to the sales man, once he found out I had a kirby, he advised me to keep it, and that there are better cleaners on the market, but they wont last.

oh also, after I used the kirby, the carpets are so clean, you can feel just how clean they are when you walk on them in clean bare feet. Strange kind of comment, but you notice the feeling.

I hope this review is helpful.

I was very unsure about spending £900 on a vacuum, however 15 years later and with just a couple of spare parts this kirby g5 is brilliant value for money. it is heavy to carry up stairs but that is just because it is so well built

There are so many features and accessories that it is hard to find any faults with the whole package. Kirby support is also exceptional, the team we deal with are quick, attentive and provide service that equals the build quality of the vacuum.

Spot on. Negotiate the price down to around £1000.00 (you can do it). These machines are in a class of their own for getting dirt out of carpets, and they really should last you 10, 20, 30, maybe longer, years.
<br/>What's the point buying a flashy Dyson, with all it's techno gimmicks. They will NEVER clean a carpet like a Kirby

Exceptionally well made vacuum cleaner. Kirby G5 / 6 / 7 is very power and an excellent cleaning too. Many configurations of accessories give a wide range of uses when it comes to cleaning. You will only ever buy one Kirby so initial costs becomes negligible in a very short space of time. Parts are readily available either from Kirby or on the internet. Rolls Royce of vacuums. Bit noisier than usual vacuum but it isn't made of plastic/cheap and nasty which more than makes up for the noise.

I had 5 new vaccums over 7 years and all were really dreadful at picking up the dog hairs. I then purchased another new Hoover, again...rubbish. I phoned them and created such a fuss that I got the member of staff who said he would personally bring another new one with him. He arrived with said hoover and it was rubbish, he appologised and went.

I purchased the Kirby G5 / 6 / 7 and now, 11 years later, it is as good today as when new.

Kirby G5 / 6 / 7 does do a good job, however too heavy far too expensive. Waste of £1000, Dyson is just as good and easier to work with. Plus with a Dyson they dont ring you up at home every month trying to sell you a service. I dont service my car as much as a Kirby, i had to change my phone number to get rid of them.

written by truebluesteve on 18/04/2009

I knew a rep for Kirby and also had the whole sales patter at my house and they are a huge waste of money. I had 2 dogs (Labradors) and my Dyson did the job at least as well as the Kirby at a 10th of the cost. Who vacuums their mattress every 6th months! If you need your carpets deep cleaned then get a pro in who will do your house for about £100 tops.

People here are probably defending them out of a misplaced sense of loyalty or they are trying to justify the huge amount of money they have spent on one.

Ask yourself - is there £1500 worth of kit in a Kirby and are they 10 times better than other cleaners!

The kirby is very efficient, although heavy to take up stairs, the only downside I have found was when I needed to have it serviced. The two representative who came worked as a team to sell be another newer version, and I felt that the actual service was by far a secondary necessity as far as they were concerned and once they finally understood I did not want a need one, they haste at getting out the door was impressive.

“I have had a kirby vacuum for 5 months and it seemed...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by justagirly on 17/02/2009

I have had a kirby vacuum for 5 months and it seemed great on the outset. One day it I thought it seemed that my kirby had a surge in power and pulled up an eighteen inch thread from a flat carpet. This made my carpet appear thread bare. Being a large company I felt I would have been treated fairly but in my opinion it didn't appear that I was. I sent e mail to explain my problem and I didn't receive a response in a reasonable time, so I sent a second and i was told a representative would contact me shortly to look into my problem. I was contacted by the franchise I bought my Kirby from about a separate issue and once the gentleman had realised there was in fact a bigger problem he took some pictures and told me that some one would be in contact, but no one appeared to get back to me. So I had to contact Kirby again this time explaining I would go to a solicitors and a kind man at Kirby headquarters told me that he would sort it out and someone will contact me. Again, it appeared no one called. So I spoke to them again and eventually an apologetic man took my kirby away for tests and said that i would be contacted the next day to let know how it is progressing. I wasn't contacted the next day or within the following week, so I phoned Kirby who assured me someone would sort it and would call back and the franchise would call, but again apparently no one did. This is another week since and as yet I'm still waiting for a response.

I have just purchased a brand new Kirby Cleaner. I did not pay anything near the asking price and with it I received a free hard floor kit system, packet of bags and shampoo system, plus a bottle of shampoo, a bottle of citrus solution, spot stain remover, heavy traffic remover and oil and grease remover.
My friends and relatives instantly noticed how beautiful the rug looked, having cleaned it with the Kirby. I would highly recommend the Kirby machine especially if you can get the price lowered and obtain lots of freebies!

“I have owned a G5 since 1997. At the time I thought ...”

★★★★★

written by snowleopard on 21/08/2008

I have owned a G5 since 1997. At the time I thought "what an idiot paying £1100 for a vacuum cleaner"! However 11 years later and the unit amortised over this time, has cost £100 per year which doesn't seem so bad.
The G5 I have, works as it did 11 years ago and has had no major replacement, (just belts). The performance outstrips even the best of the rest. It really does get out all the dirt, even from deep pile carpets.
We have a Retriever dog who sheds masses of hair, yet the carpet remains amazingly clean, thanks to the Kirby.
The down sides of this cleaner are, the cost of purchasing it in the first place (you need to look long term with this), putting up with a sales person, the sheer weight, (not easy on the stairs), the noise levels, and the after use smell of the room (doesn't last long).
For demonstration, tip a cup of sand or salt onto your carpet. Vacuum it up, as best you can with your existing vacuum cleaner and place back into the cup. You will see the level is diminished. Then vacuum the area again with a Kirby and you will see all of the balance of the substance in the Kirby bag!
We did this and saw that our previous cleaner only got up around 60% of the salt we had tipped onto the carpet!

Overall the Kirby G5 vacuum works and has many attachment options but there may be cheaper ones that achieve the same outcome. Gets up the dog hairs but perhaps most vacuums may nowadays. The Kirby is heavy, noisy and very expensive to buy.

Service engineer called to have a look at my Kirby vacuum cleaner and stripped a thread in the main casing then didn't have the correct screw to fit. I noticed the handle was loose when machine was handed back. I was asked had I dropped it? More fiddling about and the handle was fixed.
Best part was informed the motor was sparking and the cost of replacement could go prove to be a deposit on a new Kirby!

I'll never buy another Kirby after the G5!
Doesn't have any more suction power than one I could have bought for $200. It stinks from the odour of the carpets. Can't get the smell out whatsoever and the shampooer isn't nearly as good as a Rug Doctor. I wish I had spent my money on a Rainbow.

Anyone who owns a Kirby must admit how fantastic they are. The dry foam system that it uses to clean carpets is amazing and not like anything I have used before. The upright it self is also amazing. It picks up everything that other vacuum cleaners leave behind. The wand is also very good and all the attachments are very easy to use once you know how, and its not really brain surgery now is it!!

“Kirby offer a yearly maintenance contract, this year...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by contrary girl on 23/04/2007

Kirby offer a yearly maintenance contract, this year the mechanic brought along a sales rep who pushed my parents into buying a new Kirby hoover. My parents initially told him they did not want a new hoover, but eventually gave in to the salesman who refused to take no for an answer and eventually they yielded 'just to get him out of the house'!

The new hoover cost over £1200 and my parents were so embarrassed that they had fallen for the salesman's aggressive selling tactics that they did not inform their children until very recently when we were told that my mother had fallen down the stairs trying to use the new hoover.

The sales rep said it would be easier to use than the old one as the new one had some sort of self-propulsion; six months down the line they have only used it four times, it is too heavy for my mother to use, she is nearly 80 and they feel ripped off. I have taken this up with Kirby as I feel they have been victims of inappropriate selling.

Kirby's response was that they can't discriminate against the over 80's when selling their products! I had thought Kirby to be a reputable company but am now left feeling that they use heavy sales tactics on elderly people and wouldn't recommend anyone let their sales reps in! Needless to say I shall be taking this to 'Which', 'You and Yours'etc...........watch this space Kirby!

Woollf's Response to contrary girl's Review

I totally agree with your comments about the company! I have just found out that my mother, aged 77, bought a Kirby for &pound;1490, plus they took away her perfectly working Dyson "as a deposit". Thankfully the cheque she paid had not been cashed so I have cancelled it and left a message with the phone no on her invoice (? the rep) that the machine will be returned. She lives alone and is not that mobile - how could the saleswoman believed that this was in any way a suitable product? Ready to go into battle on this, as I, too, am absolutely disgusted.

Tr5's Response to contrary girl's Review

Written on: 11/10/2008

I have tried many different vacuum cleaners over the years and without doubt the Kirby is the best. Unfortunately it is not particularly easy to use and consequently not really suitable for the very old. Being so well made makes it rather expensive to manufacture and therefore if sold in shop, it would look too expensive compare to the plastic junk produced by other makes. Therefore the only sales option is to sell door to door. This in itself inflates the price so it is expensive. However, there are plenty of second hand ones on the market and in cleaning terms the G4 is as good as the latest model.

Agree entirely, and it's not just selling like this to the elderly. About 10 years ago we were pushed by the sales rep into buying one of these at &pound;1300 plus. I was 34 then, and I couldn't get this guy to accept No! We signed on the dotted line, cleaned the house from top to bottom, and then cancelled our contract - thank God for a 14 day cooling off period. It is a fantastic product which is why I'm now looking around eBay for one, but I won't be buying direct from Kirby that's for sure

I bought the Kirby G5 Vacuum cleaner from a door salesman. His technique was overpowering, and I found it hard to get rid of him. I have never used all the attachments, e.g. Sander, Shampoo and massage attachments. I wasted a lot of money on these.

I was badgered by a high pressure salesman that wouldn't stop stalking me until I caved in. I wish I had my old vacuum back that they took when I bought this USED one. I bought a used Kirby G5, and it lasted a couple of weeks and then quit working. I can't figure out what's wrong with it, and I'm deathly afraid to call Kirby because of the way I was treated to begin with.

A friend of mine was stopped in the street by someone with a clipboard and was entered into a draw to win £6000 or a car, she was contacted a few days later and told she hasn&#039;t won but offered her a free sofa clean. Two men came and stayed for over 3 hours demonstrating the Kirby cleaner. Eventually she signed up for one, the guy told her it was £1900, but instantly knocked £1000 off the price, then told her he&#039;d take her very old Vax of her ( for £200) and offered her £800 for the kirby (not a new one i must add, the demo model). What a scam, don&#039;t fall for it like she did. I later found out from a friend who owns an electrical spares business that theses machines retail for £399, and he also stated that he has 3 in his workshop that need mending but the owners can&#039;t afford the cost of the parts. If these machines are so fabulous like the salesmen claim her wouldn&#039;t have 3 broken down hoovers, would he???? DO NOT FALL FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!

written by rhclilley on 29/03/2005

I bought my Kirby off eBay second hand for around a 1/4 of the list price. Many of the accessories were unused simply because the previous owner had found attaching them too difficult.

Fortunately the Care & Use manual and accompanying video are fairly comprehensive if you are prepared to stick with it and then the true value of the Kirby is revealed. There are not many cleaning jobs the Kirby can't handle. You can freshen up matresses, sand doors and walls for painting with no dust, polish wood and laminate floors - clean up liquid spills - the list goes on.

The durability of the machines cannot be faulted - the main items that are subject to wear are the drive belt (Kirby recommend replacement each year) and the roller brush (change every two years).

Again, the recommendation would be to buy these off the web as this is a job easily carried out by the user.
