Cannot fault the booking or the hand over. We asked for an automatic, which is what we got. When hiring car is is always fairly new but our car was a 2006 Ford Fiesta with several parts missing from it. The staff told me that the car I was meant to get had not been handed back and this was all they had that was automatic. My wife was so tired that we just accepted it. Could have been more helpful!

Dear Customer
Thank you for providing the feedback regarding your rental with Auto Europe and our supplier. It can happen on occasion that a customer does not return a vehicle which then has a knock on affect for others customers; however you should still be provided with the high standard of vehicles that we expect from our suppliers.
We do hope that this does not deter you from travelling with Auto Europe in the future, and should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

“Bad second experience”

★★★☆☆

written by Edwardmodra on 01/06/2013

I have used Autoeurope in December with a hire from Thrifty. Great service polite ppl at the pick up point. Last week I have hired in Hungary for 9 days, great price I was looking forward to it!! To find the company had Austrian cars with Austrian number plate, witch I wasn't the best pleased with. Company called BUCHBINDER. Ordered the car for 6 pm! Car did not arrive for pick up till 6.45!!! I Was standing in the heat with two small children. The guy there was rude and come across pretty arrogant and did not seemed to wanted to be there!! As car arrives It was dirty inside. Dusty and mud in it!! I was fuming by this point and drove off! 20 min in to my journey started to rain. I wanted to was the window to find the windscreen washer was empty, not a drop of water in it!! !! On drop off I have refuelled the car but as I drove in to Budapest airport there was no petrol station to top up the car. I was informed that will be 15 euros service charge for someone to take the car to the petrol garage to top it up. The arm on the tank monotor must have been 4-5 mm down from the top! I've got carged for 10 litres of fuel as car was not full. All together I've got ripped off with 40.2 euros on drop off and there was nothing I can do about it as they have my card details!! I would not recommend BUCHBINDER to my worse enemy!!! Pants!!

“AutoEurope fine, Europe Car Hire much less so.”

★★★☆☆

written by Breckenbrough on 30/05/2013

As usual the car was not as booked, a Kia rather than an Opel, however the quality of car proved good, although the standard of preparation was very poor in my view. On pick up we discovered that neither the power socket nor cigar lighter had any power to them to run the sat nav, as it happens I work in a garage so quickly diagnosed two blown fuses. By the time I got back to the office it was deserted, (around 1pm) an hour later someone turned up & told me they did not have any fuses but I could change to alternative car that was way too small for a family & luggage. I elected to remove the fuses from the heated steering wheel and heated front screen (thank goodness it wasn't the Opel without these features) and continued on our way into the Rila mountains. Having left the city of Sopia heading towards Bansko through the mountains we then discovered that handbrake was useless on any kind of gradient. We persevered with the car which turned out to be both comfortable and frugal and duly returned to Europe Car a week later and received not even a thank you for the information. I feel as if I should have let it roll off the side of the mountain but I'm sure they would have only extracted more money for their inconvenience!

“Good reviews”

★★★☆☆

written by on 07/10/2012

I just booked a car with Autoeurope, and it remains to be seen weather they follow through on their promises of good service etc. I booked *after* reading the bad reviews on this page, however, after doing some more reading online, I found quite a few good reviews as well. I must admit that I do feel like I am taking a bit of a chance, though I do feel that this page paints this service provider in a rather one sided view. The reason I am writing this review is to encourage other visitors to look further in other places and read other reviews (I found mine on "trip advisor" and they were written by genuine contributors with thousands of comments on that site).

“Are they bothered!?”

★★★☆☆

written by brownboy on 11/08/2012

Returned car with full tank of fuel by mistake - cost me approx 90Euros. Contacted Auto Europe about refund of fuel costs but no interest show by them - just a standard stonewall response. WILL NOT USE THEM AGAIN!! Once they've got your money customer service and interest in you the customer stops!!

Dear Client
Some suppliers do have the full to empty fuel policy, however if you have a receipt showing that the vehicle was filled with fuel before you returned the car we can use this to request a refund from the local supplier.
Kind Regards

“Hired through Auto Europe as they were £15 cheaper...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 27/04/2010

Hired through Auto Europe as they were £15 cheaper than the other quotes I received for a 3 day hire. Contact via email to customer service department was good, prompt responses well within 24 hours. They waived any cancellation fee due to the Iceland volcano but luckily we didn't have to cancel in the end.

You are instructed to meet the courtesy shuttle outside the terminal, but this is confusing as the new terminal has now opened so we waited 15 mins here only to discover after a call to the office and seeing the shuttle zoom past us that you need to be at a bus stop outside the OLD terminal just where the new and old terminals meet.

Instead of waiting for the bus (one couple we met had waited 30 mins and were not happy), you can walk to the car hire depot if you wish as it's on the main roundabout outside the airport opposite the San Miguel brewery. There's a walkway that takes you over to the right side of the road and it's about a 10 minute walk (not good if you have cases/golf clubs though I guess!).

Overall not a terrible experience but it could have been made a whole lot easier by some signs at the airport. I will probably not use Niza again as we do not get value out of the '50 of petrol that you have to use before you return the car (no refund for any petrol left) and I prefer the convenience of just walking down the ramp in arrivals and collecting the car from there.

“Had trouble with other car rental companies in Alghero...”

★★★☆☆

written by Hoover54 on 08/07/2010

Had trouble with other car rental companies in Alghero before but Auto Europe were fine. No huge queue at their desk, reasonably quick booking in, and as advised by there desk officer to ensure a full tank on return as she said their refuelling rates were 'very, very expensive' which I thought was refreshingly honest. Car was fine if unspectacular (diesel Punto) and fair value for money.

“Having read other reviews I was very vary of Europa...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 28/06/2010

Having read other reviews I was very vary of Europa Gold Cars. All went well at pick-up EXCEPT I was given a screen to sign without knowing what I was signing. Cost was as estimated BUT my signature was also against a statement saying I had agreed to pay in Pounds (not true, I was not asked!) I have a Nationwide credit card which does not load for european purchases and I always intended to pay in euros). I understand from friends that it is illegal is Spain to charge other than in euros without asking. Naughty!
Customer Services in the parking garage were very helpful in working out how to start the car and set the options in english (Picasso auto) - very dark in the garage. However, although we checked the body work for any damage we did not notice a deep scratch along both offside windows - could not have seen that in the dark. We wait to here if this was noticed on return - we do have insurance to cover this but are a bit anxiousin view of others comments. Would rather NOT have used Europa Gold Cars but the 3 agents we tried all used this company and we did want an auto.

“ watch the small print on Auto Europe voucher ”

written by on 16/02/2010

watch the small print on Auto Europe voucher
a) will not permit return of car with full tank. Sixt rentals chargesd for 39 litres in a car with tank capacity 35 litres
b) unlike most other rental companies auto europe charge doe not include airport location fee (15 euro in cyprus)
car was fine but charges a surprise.

“After two or three hiring experiences, it is clear...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 07/09/2009

After two or three hiring experiences, it is clear that Auto-Europe achieve keen prices by sub-contracting end-of-life cars from hire operators.

The cars are sometimes a bit tatty, but I have not yet had one that was undrivable. The hire contract is based on the rental company's usual terms, which should, of course, be checked carefully.

On balance, I will continue to use Auto-Europe until I hit a problem that they don't seem willing to resolve for me.

On arrival at the City of Derry airport I was a bit apprehensive because I had never used Auto Europe before.

The staff at the car hire centre was very helpful, no problems and would use them again, have recommended Auto Europe to friends who are travelling to Spain.

They were very professional and staff were a credit to their company.

Has anyone used Auto Europe for US rentals? They're coming up at almost half the price of going to Alamo direct, which is hard to refuse, but I sense a catch! Any ideas?

I used them last year, booked and paid for a Ford Explorer (large luxury SUV, had one before, very nice) but got given a Nissan Rodeo (like a Qashqui, poor by comparison). No joy with the rental company at the airport, because it wasn't booked direct, and Auto Europe do not respond to complaints. So I wouldn't use them again, I would go direct to the rental company.

I've used them for trips to the US over the last 6 years (mainly to Ohio). They pre-book your rental with the big companies but just be aware that some of them have local T&Cs such as Alamo no require an International Driving Permit, or Budget require additional drivers to present a credit card in their name. I usually go for a Gold Rate deal which includes up to three extra drivers and a tank of gas. You can usually get to speak to an agent over the phone for free or a local call, they are based in Maine, US.

The problem with Auto Europe is with the special Conditions they have. Auto Europe is NO thrustworthy company. If you book the car with them they send you a "special condition" paper. If anything goes wrong you have big problems or as in my case you wont get the car and lose 340 euro. If its to good to be true, trust me it is.

3 times over the past few years at both Denver and Chicago. No problem with any of the rentals. Offered a choice of cars at Chicago by the rental desk.

Yes I have, twice now, and no complaints (but also were going with the smallest car possible, weren't trying to book anything luxurious). The insurance is included, which is a big deal - we live in the UK now but rent cars when visiting family back in the US, so insurance included is a must.

We chanced upon two links on customers' feedback - one of which is ReviewCentre's of course and the other is from Auto Europe and find the disparity between customers' reviews is really quite different. We are confused, so now based on calculated choice should we still take the risk with Auto Europe Car Hire?

Thanks for answering this question.

Dont take the reviews serious on the AutoEurope site because the bad reviews are filtered out. Legal because there is no Internet police who stops companies like this. They make money with very bad conditions. With those conditions AutoEurope makes a lot of money, in my case 340 euro. I had prepaid, and if you prepay an amount of that you have to be sure you can trust that company. If you go on holiday and rent a car you dont want a feeling can I trust that company, believe me you dont want to take that risk.

Hi IMHO it doesn't matter which car company you go with, what matters are the actual people in the office where you get your car from. You will hand your car back when your done and someone will decide if you've damaged it or not/ filled it up with petrol / kept it clean enough etc. What constitutes "too dirty" and how much under full is "not full" , also it already had some small scratches on that were nothing to do with you. These are all subjective decisions. I've used Auto Europe a few times and there were no problems, but i attribute that more to the fact that I hired my car from Kerry airport, where the people are some of the easiest going and nicest natured around. Auto Europe is essentially a broker - it doesn't hire the cars direct. So, to some extent what you get depends on the car hire company you actually rent the vehicle from. However, the advantages of Auto Europe (to me) are: 1.The rental prices are very competitive and often cheaper than you will get if you go direct to the car hire company website. 2.It reduces the normally very large insurances excesses charged by most rental firms (although it is still advisable to buy cheap supplementary insurance to reduce these excesses to virtually zero from somewhere like icarhireinsurance). 3. If something does go wrong, you can deal with a UK company rather than have to deal direct with a foreign car rental firm. I have now used Auto Europe twice - both times in Italy, using Europcar. I have had excellent service and a virually brand new car on both occasions but whether that is the influence of Auto Europe or just normal Europcar service I don't know. Europcar is not the cheapest airport car hire but it does seem to be reliable.

In my experience of several bookings Auto Europe are OK and easy to deal with, even for cancellations. The main issue is the local car rental company you end up with. Some are very good, others are best to avoid. Read reviews of the rental company in the country (and city) of your destination.

My initial experience with auto Europe was good, the internet site works well and I always purchased additional insurance to cover myself from all risks. Unfortunately all seems fine until it goes wrong. My last experience with auto Europe I had a minor accident while exiting a garage and scratched the side door. When tried to claim from the insurance taken with Auto Europe I was made aware that accident caused while parking, in or out, are exempt from the cover. It was my fault, I should have read the small print, but who would have assumed that while parking are not classified as accidents. When dealing with customer service was very difficult as they are based in USA and eventually I gave up (this is what they aim for). Since I am using “economy car hire” and I make sure to take insurance cover with the actual rental company and not the broker. I hope this will help

We were ripped of at the northern airport in Tenerife in 2012 when we had booked a car through Auto Europe. The company that delivered the car was however a different one, Golden Cars or something like it. We had paid for the car in advance, but when we where to pick it up, the clerk asked for an additional insurance of 7 Euros or alternatively a substantial deposit. We were also told not to fill up the petrol, which felt strange. When coming back home we had a huge Visa bill, where the additional insurance was 70 Euros, not 7 and a petrolbill big enough to fill the tank of three cars. When were refunded half of the bill when we complained and wrote about this on the net.

It is important to remember that Auto Europe are simply the agent who makes your reservation with the car rental company your voucher that they e mail to you will give you details of what you have reserved and paid for in all the years I have used Auto Europe they have always been the cheapest even via price comparison sites when a problem arises with the rental car (as has happened to me several times over the years) it is the rental companies responsibility to put things right if they don't they are in breach of their statutory duty I wouldn't expect Auto Europe to get involved as the contract is between me and the rental company

hi there. This a price war and when you are online this the only thing that matters! Auto Europe is actually “Sicily by Car” a pretty small Co with not many offices and some good helpful staff. but they also act as 3rd party and selling other brands where they are not present, undercutting the big boys who are using them to get to you via their database, so you can get a "Europcar" at 10 or 20 % less. And always be charming with the nice lady behind the counter, 9 out of 10 you get an upgrade!

No don't do it at least if you going to Italy or Spain. Twice I've been fooled and 600 Euro poorer. I've sent several emails to them, and it's no surprise, they are not to blame! Fake images, no car even though I paid in advance! Never, never rent a car for this company!
