“Note sent to Auto Europe - ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by paulevans on 30/11/2008

Note sent to Auto Europe -
1) On the voucher it had the local car hire as Europa. When I arrived at Las Palmas I could not find any car hire agent called Europa.
Having spent 30 min looking for Europa and making enquiries with Airport information I discover that Europa had changed their name to Gold Car !
Auto Europe never advised me of this. So first impressions of Auto Europe were not good.
2) Gold Car have a policy of charging you for a full tank of fuel (54 euros for diesal!) and advised I should bring the car back with an empty tank as I was being charged for a full tank whether I use it or not !
The car hire was only ever to get me to and from the airport plus a couple of trips during the week. I used only 1/3 of a tank of fuel!
This is unacceptable and a tactic to make additional money by Gold Car and made the cost of the car hire through Auto Europe not so competitive with the likes of Avis/Hertz which from previous experience only charge you for the fuel you use.
On my Auto Europe voucher no mention was made of the policy for charging the customer for a full tank of fuel whether used or not.
As I'm sure you can appreciate my experience with Auto Europe has not been very positive

I rented a car from Auto Europe for a trip to Europe. They charged me the total amount when I made the reservation, although it was a month prior to my trip. Upon returning from Europe the car rental company in Europe sent me an invoice informing me that they had charged my credit card. Therefore, I was billed twice! First time from Auto Europe and the second time directly from the European Rental company. I do not recommend renting a car from these individuals! They still have not refunded my money because they say that the compay in Europe is slow. And, now I need to pay both bills on my credit card. Yes! what a great deal!

As I say, if you have a problem, just get out of the car and start walking. Because otherwise you're going to spend the rest of your holiday trying to resolve their total lack of competence.
I will never use these jokers again; and I wish I'd seen this website before tried to use them this time.

Didn't tell me I would need a credit card to hire the vehicle so I couldn't hire from them. Wouldn't let me change name to my Grandmother as she had credit card because she was too old to hire from them. Offered a refund which I accepted but 8 weeks later I am still waiting.

I will not use AutoEurope again. I think if I had seen this site before I chose them I would not have used them.

The car I got was much smaller than the one I had origianlly contracted for, but I did make it work. The agents simply said take it or leave it.

The car did have some dents when I picked it up but nothing serious. They did not question this when I returned it.

On booking a car for collection at Bergamo, seemed like the best price for the category of car provided. Car already had several dents and scratches on collection. During the week of hire, a plastic adjustable louvre fell off the air vent on the dashboard (and fell inside the air vent). When I returned the car, I was charged £63 for "breaking" the air vent and despite strong protests to their customer services have been unable to get my money back. In my opinion if the steering wheel fell off while you were driving they would blame you for it. Next time I would pay the few pounds extra and go to someone like Hertz.

“I disliked the sales approach of reception desk in...”

written by on 02/07/2008

I disliked the sales approach of reception desk in Orlando airport trying to upsell car and additional insurance policies and telling me the (supposedly all inclusive) insurance I had taken out at time of booking was insufficient.

I was also advised that the 7 seater vehicle I had booked would have insufficient space for the 2 adults and 2 children in our party and we would need an 8 seater.

I found the vehicle collection to be poor - I basically got my keys and was told to find my own way. There was only one of the category of vehicles we had booked left, if we had been a few minutes later there probably would have been none.

We had booked a child seat which was just given to us with no help offered to help us fit this and it was quite a complicated one to fit, even harder as it was dark.

I suppose if you pay peanuts then you should expect a compromise on service but I felt we had to ensure too much of a compromise, and in future will pay more to get a better, friendlier service.

However the apparent rudeness of the staff member I dealt with will last with me for some time as he appeared clearly desperate to upsell the car or insurance even though I told him what I had pre-booked was what I wanted.

Will not use again.

written by rob72 on 21/04/2008

Five onths ago in December (winter time here in Europe) I have rented a car in Italy/Bergamo with Auto Europe. The car has been rented with ZERO EXCESS INSURANCE. I travelled from Bergamo to small village in Italian Alps. After 5 days on day of my departure from Italy the car broke down. Engine just died when we were about to leave the village and drive to the airport. I rang Auto Europe just to find out that they were not able to provide me with the replacement as they didn't have any offices in that area. They offered to send towing vehicle to collect the broken car and a taxi to take us to the airport in Bergamo (250km away). I have been informed that Auto Europe will pay just 150 euro for the service so at the end I have been left with no choice but to pay additional 150 euro for the taxi.
After two weeks I discovered that my credit card has been charged with 130euro. After my numerous phone calls and emails to incompetent Auto Europe customer service I received their explanation that I have been charged for the damage to the car. As they explained I didn't put anti-freezer liquid to the fuel tank and the car broke down. INTERESTING thing is that I got the car with the full tank and did not have a chance to fill it up by myself at all. Of course I have explained everything to Customer Service. When I received me credit card statement I discovered an additional charged of 93euro to my card. I still did not receive any explanation what is the basis of that charged.
Since more then 5 weeks all my calls and emails are being left without any respond.
Just to summarize I have to spent additional 370euro (even though the car has been rented with ZERO EXCESS INSURANCE) because Auto Europe has provided me with no technically fit car.

Quick, efficient booking, seemingly cheap. We had an additional £60 charged to our credit card post-hire. There was no explanation for this at the time. The bill was for fuel (we filled up 2 minutes from the airport), for snow tyres (we were hiring in Geneva - never asked for snow tyres) & for service - what??!!! Hidden costs!!

When I made the online reservation, it was $50 and said that the amount due was zero. However when I rented the car, I had to pay another surcharge of $45. The rental agency told me that it was because I had used autoeurope to book the car. They said that it would not have been the case if I had booked directly through them (and would have costed me $70).... So I ended up paying a lot more for no good reason.... Called up Customer Service, but what can you really expect... Moral of the story: They have a lot of fine print, be careful.

The car they gave me through National broke down a few hours after the pick-up. During my vacation I had to change car twice, and finally I was charged on my credit card both from AutoEurope car hire and from Hertz (which gave me one of the replacement cars I had). Now they don't want to refund me!

The people at Auto Europe car hire were no help whatsoever. The agency in Spain said it was Auto Europe's fault.

Bottom line: Don't be fooled by really cheap prices etc. It is too good to be true. Spend a little more and go to Hertz or Avis etc... You will get a much better service.

I rented a car in Cyprus via Auto Europe. When I got the car I was asked to pay an extra $50 up front for fuel, although the voucher from Auto Europe specifically said I had to return the car with a full tank. I returned the car with a full tank, and was not reimbursed for the fuel. I contacted Auto Europe by email, and they said there was nothing they could do about it, and blamed me for not mentioning that I was returning the car with a full tank. Since the total rental price was $125, the extra $50 was a real cheat.

“I reserved a car in Kalamata, Greece through Auto...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by mkarkapoulos on 01/10/2005

I reserved a car in Kalamata, Greece through Auto Europe, and prepaid the rental costs in full (as required). When my spouse and I arrived at the pickup location, they had given away our car because our bus to Kalamata arrived just over an hour late for the pickup. Auto Europe claim this is "standard" when you pickup your car at downtown locations, so beware. And the fact that we had prepaid two months in advance through Auto Europe meant absolutely nothing. Instead, we were forced to take a $60 taxi to the location we needed to be at that night (after four hours in the streets trying to rent a car through a different agency, but in vain). In addition, without a car for the end of our trip, we were forced to cancel hotel reservations and do much less than we had expected.

I would definitely not recommend renting from Auto Europe. When I returned to North America to settle my account and get reimbursed, they did not seem to know the details of my horrendous ordeal in Kalamata, although I spoke to their agents at least 6-8 times in the vain attempt to find another car to rent when mine was given away. In addition, although we were fully reimbursed, I found that the agents were not apologetic for our experience, and even tried to lay part of the blame on us.

Has anyone used Auto Europe for US rentals? They're coming up at almost half the price of going to Alamo direct, which is hard to refuse, but I sense a catch! Any ideas?

I used them last year, booked and paid for a Ford Explorer (large luxury SUV, had one before, very nice) but got given a Nissan Rodeo (like a Qashqui, poor by comparison). No joy with the rental company at the airport, because it wasn't booked direct, and Auto Europe do not respond to complaints. So I wouldn't use them again, I would go direct to the rental company.

I've used them for trips to the US over the last 6 years (mainly to Ohio). They pre-book your rental with the big companies but just be aware that some of them have local T&Cs such as Alamo no require an International Driving Permit, or Budget require additional drivers to present a credit card in their name. I usually go for a Gold Rate deal which includes up to three extra drivers and a tank of gas. You can usually get to speak to an agent over the phone for free or a local call, they are based in Maine, US.

The problem with Auto Europe is with the special Conditions they have. Auto Europe is NO thrustworthy company. If you book the car with them they send you a "special condition" paper. If anything goes wrong you have big problems or as in my case you wont get the car and lose 340 euro. If its to good to be true, trust me it is.

3 times over the past few years at both Denver and Chicago. No problem with any of the rentals. Offered a choice of cars at Chicago by the rental desk.

Yes I have, twice now, and no complaints (but also were going with the smallest car possible, weren't trying to book anything luxurious). The insurance is included, which is a big deal - we live in the UK now but rent cars when visiting family back in the US, so insurance included is a must.

We chanced upon two links on customers' feedback - one of which is ReviewCentre's of course and the other is from Auto Europe and find the disparity between customers' reviews is really quite different. We are confused, so now based on calculated choice should we still take the risk with Auto Europe Car Hire?

Dont take the reviews serious on the AutoEurope site because the bad reviews are filtered out. Legal because there is no Internet police who stops companies like this. They make money with very bad conditions. With those conditions AutoEurope makes a lot of money, in my case 340 euro. I had prepaid, and if you prepay an amount of that you have to be sure you can trust that company. If you go on holiday and rent a car you dont want a feeling can I trust that company, believe me you dont want to take that risk.

Hi IMHO it doesn't matter which car company you go with, what matters are the actual people in the office where you get your car from. You will hand your car back when your done and someone will decide if you've damaged it or not/ filled it up with petrol / kept it clean enough etc. What constitutes "too dirty" and how much under full is "not full" , also it already had some small scratches on that were nothing to do with you. These are all subjective decisions. I've used Auto Europe a few times and there were no problems, but i attribute that more to the fact that I hired my car from Kerry airport, where the people are some of the easiest going and nicest natured around. Auto Europe is essentially a broker - it doesn't hire the cars direct. So, to some extent what you get depends on the car hire company you actually rent the vehicle from. However, the advantages of Auto Europe (to me) are: 1.The rental prices are very competitive and often cheaper than you will get if you go direct to the car hire company website. 2.It reduces the normally very large insurances excesses charged by most rental firms (although it is still advisable to buy cheap supplementary insurance to reduce these excesses to virtually zero from somewhere like icarhireinsurance). 3. If something does go wrong, you can deal with a UK company rather than have to deal direct with a foreign car rental firm. I have now used Auto Europe twice - both times in Italy, using Europcar. I have had excellent service and a virually brand new car on both occasions but whether that is the influence of Auto Europe or just normal Europcar service I don't know. Europcar is not the cheapest airport car hire but it does seem to be reliable.

In my experience of several bookings Auto Europe are OK and easy to deal with, even for cancellations. The main issue is the local car rental company you end up with. Some are very good, others are best to avoid. Read reviews of the rental company in the country (and city) of your destination.

My initial experience with auto Europe was good, the internet site works well and I always purchased additional insurance to cover myself from all risks. Unfortunately all seems fine until it goes wrong. My last experience with auto Europe I had a minor accident while exiting a garage and scratched the side door. When tried to claim from the insurance taken with Auto Europe I was made aware that accident caused while parking, in or out, are exempt from the cover. It was my fault, I should have read the small print, but who would have assumed that while parking are not classified as accidents. When dealing with customer service was very difficult as they are based in USA and eventually I gave up (this is what they aim for). Since I am using “economy car hire” and I make sure to take insurance cover with the actual rental company and not the broker. I hope this will help

We were ripped of at the northern airport in Tenerife in 2012 when we had booked a car through Auto Europe. The company that delivered the car was however a different one, Golden Cars or something like it. We had paid for the car in advance, but when we where to pick it up, the clerk asked for an additional insurance of 7 Euros or alternatively a substantial deposit. We were also told not to fill up the petrol, which felt strange. When coming back home we had a huge Visa bill, where the additional insurance was 70 Euros, not 7 and a petrolbill big enough to fill the tank of three cars. When were refunded half of the bill when we complained and wrote about this on the net.

It is important to remember that Auto Europe are simply the agent who makes your reservation with the car rental company your voucher that they e mail to you will give you details of what you have reserved and paid for in all the years I have used Auto Europe they have always been the cheapest even via price comparison sites when a problem arises with the rental car (as has happened to me several times over the years) it is the rental companies responsibility to put things right if they don't they are in breach of their statutory duty I wouldn't expect Auto Europe to get involved as the contract is between me and the rental company

hi there. This a price war and when you are online this the only thing that matters! Auto Europe is actually “Sicily by Car” a pretty small Co with not many offices and some good helpful staff. but they also act as 3rd party and selling other brands where they are not present, undercutting the big boys who are using them to get to you via their database, so you can get a "Europcar" at 10 or 20 % less. And always be charming with the nice lady behind the counter, 9 out of 10 you get an upgrade!
