Power and Style. The Honda Civic Type R is too tall, under steer in tight corners or in wet conditions. Needs good tyres and possibly suspension upgrade.

I love this car, as it's a lot of performace for the money - plus you get bullet-proof reliability. But it does lack in refinement, very basic interior, poor quality CD radio, lots of road noise. But that acceleration! I don't think this car is easy to drive fast on UK B-roads as it has a tendancy to oversteer - seems strange for a front mounted front wheel drive car - but it happens, its caught me out, and my tyres and pressures are fine. Can't wait to take it on a track though...

My civic type r is fantastic, as soon as i saw it i went straight to the bank. wow, the vtech is sublime, I've had mine chipped and got a aem v2 induction kit, with full replacement steel exhaust, it puts out around245 bhp, it is amazing, it sounds like a Ferrari, especially in a tunnel.

If you want a buzz and don't mind shelling out for fuel every 3 days then go buy one, the new shape is rubbish, older one is meaner and looks a lot better, than the new one with that fat behind....

Have loved the Honda Civic Type-R since I bought it in June 2006 if pushed hard enough in the VTEC will keep up with some cars you wouldn't expect it to. Handling is fantastic if you change to a slightly softer tyre. Sounds amazing when the VTEC comes in with the induction kit fitted and stainless exhaust. If your feeling a bit fed up you just go out in your Civic Type-R and you soon feel happy again. Mine just started to get a rattling noise on the engine from start up when cold and quits of after about 20 minutes. Although it doesn't always do this so its proving difficult to pinpoint the problem.

“I bought my Red Civic Type-R from a Honda dealer for...”

★★★★★

written by GmanHam1980 on 11/12/2006

I bought my Red Civic Type-R from a Honda dealer for 9.5k with 44k on the clock. It has no air con which I was told gives it a slightly quicker 0-60 time due to the fact that there isn't an Air Con unit under the bonnet. My previous car was a Peugeot 307 and that has a large boot but I can still fit as many sets of golf bags in the back of this so it's very practical.

The engine noise when you get over 6000 rpm's is amazing, I have been in the new Focus ST and yes it is a lovely car but I actually prefer the sound that my car makes. Put the CTR in 4th at about 35mph and no it doesn't accelerate very quickly but the noise of the VTEC is a high pitched whining noise as if there was a supercharger in it. That's what I do when my mates get in it and they can't believe the noise of it!

I minor gripe with the noise is that if your doing a long journey you have to play your music at volume 26+ (which is loud) to mute the engine noise out when your cruising in 6th. But I suppose that's the draw back of having a performance car. If you don't want the moan of the engine buy the Type S.

I was going to buy an Astra VXR at the beginning of the year but with 236bhp the steering falls short of most other hatches especially the CTR and at 17k brand new and me only paying 9.5k for a 52 plate model with reasonable mileage I feel I've got a bargain. I also feel that the Type-R has just enough power for the size of the car. Too much and you'll under steer into a tree like the VXR.

Now I'm not a boy racer but when I get into my car I know that 85% of other cars can't touch the power and handling of mine which give confidence when exiting a roundabout onto a by-pass. (95% in terms of hot hatches).

This car is a must have for all people who love to drive.

Hi Graham,

When you say the engine note is loud on motorways, what kind of speed and revs are we talking here? If you're in 6th and you're at 3,000 rpm, that's a guess by the way, is it still very loud?

Thanks very much,

★★★★★

written by Domesphere on 10/12/2006

The Civic Type-R offers a great all round drive and is excellent fun as well as largely practical. This car would suit anyone looking for affordable motoring (resale value considered) as well as having a desirable performance car. Economy ranges roughly from the 200-300 miles per 50 litre fuel tank depending on your right foot! The Vtec engine has no reported major failures after nearly 20 years in production speaking volumes for design and build quality. Good quality tyres are essential on the Type-R when attempting to transfer your 200 horses to the road via the front wheels. I would recommend the bridgestone potenza RE050 (new compound to be featured on mk2 Type-R). I would also recommend waiting for a lower mileage a/c model if buying, any additional cost should return on resale.

There are more important things in life than material possessions... but they are nice aren't they???
You know what to do if you haven't already!!

written by dhayton on 28/10/2006

Even after 11 months I still feel special getting in the Honda Civic Type-R! Fair enough it can't touch my previous car for handling (Peugeot 106 GTI) but more than makes up for it in just about every other way. One of the main reasons I bought the car was for the Honda reliability, as all my other cars have been European and been nothing but trouble and up to now, this hasn't let me down in over 12,000 happy miles. When I bought the car I kept telling myself I've got a dream car as I've always loved them and after all this time, nothings changed! I still feel privileged to own & drive such a car. Buy one now!

Hi i used to own a 106 GTI for around 5 years and loved it to bits it cost me a few quid due to reliability issues but every day i drove it i got a smile on my face..

I'm currently looking for a Civic Type R and i was wondering how it compares to the 106 in terms of performance. I understand the handling wont be as good and i'll be amazed if i find a car that handles better than the 106 but is it much quicker and whats the running costs like???

Honda Civic Type-R is an outstanding car! It looks amazing with the safe guard polish in night hawk black, and after purchasing one that had only done 30 thousand miles for such a reasonable price I felt like the cat that got the cream! My old 1.4 Clio would do 250 miles for 30 quid of just driving short journeys. I was amazed to find that the Civic would also do the same mileage for only 36 quid which just showed how economical it is. The insurance cost me 1200 quid for the year as I'm only 21 but was worth every penny through elephant.co.uk. If you can afford to get a 2004 model, I would advise you too, as they have slightly nicer front lights, and also look brilliant with the indicators in the wing mirrors like Mercedes. A friend of mine has done nearly 90 thousand miles in his as he has a sales job and can't believe how amazing the V-tec still sounds, just like new. The only problem he had is that the clutch went after 77 thousand miles and cost 700 quid. However apart from this, it has been trouble free motoring.

Yes, facelift models can be had for pretty reasonable prices now. They're available on 53 plates onwards. However, if your budget can't stretch, I wouldn't worry too much. As the term suggests, the CTR was merely facelifted, not overhauled, so apart from a few cosmetic changes (lights, front bumper, side mirrors, red trim on front seats) and a 0.2 second difference in the dash to 60, you're still looking at the same car. Air con is something to watch out for. It's not facelift specific, but it was a factory option and not everyone purchased it, so don't just assume the car you're looking at has it. You can live without a/c, but it's a nice extra, and will help the residuals when it comes time to sell as well. There are also some CTR's around with factory leather seats, if you like that sort of thing. Personally, I feel this doesn't fit with the image of the car, but it's down to personal opinion I guess.

If your budget can stretch, a facelift is definitely an option. I'd also consider 30th Anniversary models, which are pre-facelifts, but are special editions and come with factory tinted rear glass and red Recaro seats, among other things... yummy! Then there are the Championship white Japanese Domestic Models, which are even rarer, and have over 20 more horses than the UK model! Finally, there are also plenty of well modified examples around, with quality Japanese performance parts. Particularly interesting are the ones with Jackson Racing superchargers. :D

Have owned this car for 3 years - the longest I've ever kept a car, as it is sooo good! The engine is a peach. Hit the V-Tech and hear it sing.
The reliability has been second to none - it has never let me down and nothing has gone wrong (so far!). The gearbox is ultra sharp and so short, you really enjoy changing gear. Although the screen mists up for no apparent reason, and 3 point turns turn into 5 point (or even 7!), I would have no hesitation in recommending this car to anyone. Even your granny could drive it! Can't wait for the newest shape Type R offering to be released.

Got my Honda Civic Type-R the other day, got a great deal on an 02 plate for £8000, and it only had 39,000 on the clock so I was quite lucky to get it so cheap, and only 1 women owner, even better.
Well...... what can I say?? This car is beyond awesome, it's mind blowing. I honestly feel like I've bought a Porsche, and only when I get out of the car do I realise it's not. Awesome power, great handling and I'm the envy of everyone I know, it's great to have such a fast car. But I'm not a stupid driver, like I always say "its nice to have power and not need it, then to need it and not have it". And you need it sometimes to get away from those pesky boy racers.

All in all I would recommened this car to anyone, well done Honda for producing yet another quality car. Right.... I'm off to have another drive!

“The Civic Type R was such an astonishing car for me to...”

★★★★☆

written by BizzyBoy on 09/04/2006

The Civic Type R was such an astonishing car for me to drive for the first time after being used to underpowered Ford Fiestas. Of course on the test drives you're always a bit reluctant to push the car too hard, in case the salesman starts raising his eyebrows. So, it wasn't until I'd got the car all to myself that I realised how cool it actually is. The acceleration is reasonably good from around 3000rpm onwards, but hold on past 6000, the VTEC kicks in and you're gone!! That was my first impression of the car, plus how cool it looked with it's 17" rims, twin exhaust and racing seats. This is a real boy racer's dream machine!

So, now the fog's lifted and a year has passed since I took delivery, do I still feel the same way? Well, basically yes I do. I'm not as blown away by the power as I once was, although I can still leave a lot of cars for dust if I put my foot down and it's still satisfying. If I was nitpicking I'd say; the CTR can have problems getting power down in the wet, 3-point-turns often become 5 point turns and it does have a tendancy to torque steer to the left when accelerating in low gears. Then I'd complain about insurance - group 17, which isn't that great. Not to mention the boy/girl racer's who, whilst being in awe of your dream machine also feel threatened and feel they have something to prove by trying to race you along a busy stretch of dual carriageway.

But these all have answers:

(1) Poor traction in wet conditions - don't VTEC in 2nd on a roundabout!
(2) Poor turning circle - it's a pain, but downgrade to 13's if you're that concerned
(3) Torque steer - a bit of a pain, but forgettable once you're used to the car,
(4) Insurance - it's a performance car, mate!
(5) Boy racer's wanna race - either race them and sink to their level, or ignore them; your choice.

So all in all it's a great car suitable for enthusiasts or anyone who generally enjoys driving. My next car might not be another Civic (or indeed another Honda), but I'm more than happy with this one for the year or two, at least.

Scoobz,

I agree there are now quicker hot hatches on the market now, and the CTR does lack low down torque. But provided you know how to drive it, the CTR can still compete with the current crop of hot hatches, including the Astra VXR, LCR and ST220. Half the issue I think is whether or not the CTR appeals to one's way of driving or not. Some people like the comfort of having easy access to power, and others enjoy the thrill of a high revving engine. As far as the competition with modified hatches - Saxo's, Golf's etc. goes. Yes, there's some truth in that, but there are plenty of performance parts available for the CTR that see good gains, that would put it right back in the game if you wish to go down that route.

I commend Honda for keeping the CTR N/A, whilst its rivals were having to rely on bolt-on superchargers and turbo's to achieve similar power. That said, I think this can only go so far, and perhaps they should have taken a different approach for the new model. You're right! The spec does seem a bit weak in comparison to a lot of its rivals, but until it's released, no-one will know for sure. I will certainly give it an audition all the same.

Bulldog Basil,

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm currently with a company called Greenlight, which are geared towards young drivers and fast cars. None of the more well known outfits have given me anything close to a reasonable quotation. £282 sounds lovely, but your excess is pretty high!

You can stoop down to the level of racing those 'Boy Racers', but don't always expect to 'win'.
The CTR is a very nice car and I agree with all your points but remember it isn't the top of the 'hot hatch' tree anymore.
Plus, there are many 1.8T engined hatchbacks that will have been easily modified (remap) to over 200bhp, that will smoke a CTR on a straight. I know, I've seen it happen.
It is just such a shame the new Civic Type R is going to be lumbered with the same 200bhp, which puts it 30-50bhp down on the new Hot-Hatch competition (e.g. Focus ST, Astra VXR, Golf GTI & Leon Cupra).
I personally like the fact that all other Hot-Hatches are adopting the Turbo approach, allowing power and performance without the need to wind the engine up to 8500rpm. A good mixture of power and torque is what I feel the CTR lacks where others excel.

I love it. What a kick from the V-tech at 6000rpm. Keep it in the power range and there's no catching it. Superb, thats all I can say

I bought a 53 plate Honda Civic Type-R with just over 30k on it. I had the shock of my life when I drove it home..... how fast!?!?!?!? Needless to say you have to be very careful where you have fun in this car! I love everything about it, performance, reliablity economy (if your careful) and practicallity. It's not often you get a car with all of these unless you want to pay mega bucks and for a second hand one of these at just £10k or a new one for £16k it would be rude not to.

The only thing which is slightly annoying, which I thought wouldn't be a major problem is not being able to access the rear from the drivers side, and when it's raining and you have a laptop and some files can be a little annoying to go around the car, but hey it wouldn't take long to put you in a good mood again i assure you ( :

The Honda Civic Type R is one very enjoyable car that is practical too, if you don't have a large family. My friend has a Cooper S and was amazed at the boot space. Engine loves it when you give it some stick, you really can have a laugh when you get going but it takes a bit of experience and nerve to ring its neck. If you try to drive permanently in the V-TEC zone you are going to lose your license very quickly.

I didn't mention the paint chips or the dash visibility in my review but I completely agree with the comments made by the reviewer. If you're a taller-than-average person you'll have to get used to moving your head to see certain parts of the displays on the dash. My black CTR also has a nice collection of stone chips on the bonnet. None of them are very big or overly noticeable, unless you're really close but this is an issue every driver of this car will have to get used to.
I also echo the reviewer's comment about VTECing all the time. It is surprising how quickly you can reach very illegal speeds in this car, or so I've heard. But as well as losing your license you could end up losing a whole lot more as well. 'With great power comes great responsibility'.

The looks of the Honda Civic Type R still turn heads as you drive down the street. It likes to be driven normally at 30mph with your kids sat comfortable in the back, and your wife by your side. Drop them off at the shops and head for the open road. The acceleration is superb along with handling that gives a great ride. Hit 6K revs and listen to the V-Tec kick in. Its like a turbo, but without the problems that come with them. A must buy for anyone who likes a blast now and then!
Shop around and find a good one. I went for lower milage but a bit older from a dealer.
