“Lots of youngsters from 12 years and under on the gym...”

★★★☆☆

written by Rogers201 on 07/02/2022

I do not understand why DL has a new policy of allowing kids from the age of 12 to use the gym equipment on their own. I have been going to various gyms for years and i know that they are doing more harm to themselves than good. Nobody supervises them and they have no idea what to do - it is obvious that they have not been shown how to use the equipment as they have to keep asking each other what to do! I saw one lot throwing the weights balls to each other! When I saw a young group - yes they come in groups so they can show off to each other - arrive with their toddler brother who was hanging from the equipment!! I told reception but nothing has been done and I have given up mentioning it as they are not interested. I would like to know how this new policy started, why members were not told and how it is being monitored.

I totally agree. I hate all the kids hanging around at the David Lloyd gyms now. When you walk into the lounge area at Fulham, the noise is incredible. It is meant to be an exclusive(ish) health club / gym and yet it is basically a nursery now. You can’t relax anywhere. Even the pool area and sauna is noisy with kids running and screaming everywhere. I can’t wait for my contract to end.

Thank you! It is good to know I am not the only one with concerns and your comment about DL becoming a nursery is "bang on the money" as one of the staff members in the gym area even acknowledged that "we are being used as a babysitting service".

This is allowed because all they care about is the breeeders and their revolting children. This is where the money is made. At DL Raynes Park, they are freezing out older folk to make even more room for the breeders. Cancelled classes that were for older folk and replaced with hot yoga, playing music everywhere - including he outdoor pool , hiking up the membership fees by twice the rate of inflation when most older folk are on fixed income. When I complained they said if I didn't like it then I could leave ! In the summer, the kids are in the outdoor pool - fair enough - but there is often no lifeguard. There is a family changing room - a whole huge space just for them - but for some reason the breeders often still come in the main changing rooms . Kids screaming in the showers, running around etc. The breeders even use the seats to change babies nappies on - disgusting . What do the management do about this - nothing. You just can't get away from them. Is it too much to ask just to have one quiet hour a day ?

DL Hampton was sold to us very well, but having been a member for 6 weeks now, the failings and poor management have become glaringly obvious. There are hardly any treadmills working in the gym and this issue has got worse not better. How can they leave so many pieces of equipment broken and deem that's acceptable ? Other equipment is aged and there is a serious shortage of some meaning you can never access it. Paper towel dispensers are nearly always empty. Indoor pool is cloudy and cold. Lanes are far too narrow to share and you bang into other swimmers. This is because they need to have specific times for family swims, not fit it in with lane swimming. One or the other would be the sensible option wouldn't it ? Hydro pool is dirty and there is a nasty scummy foam on the water. Yesterday it was merely tepid with cold...COLD water coming from the jets. What's the point in getting into a barely warm hydro pool ? It should be warm/hot. Under 18s are not allowed in the Spa but I see them. There are no staff members checking. Showers in the changing rooms have limescale ridden pipes ( poor maintenance ) and the water is rarely hot. When I finish exercising I don't want a warm shower, I want a hot one. Especially in January. I've complained twice online and received their pathetic stock answer which is not followed up as promised. I complained to the desk yesterday and the person there was rude, blunt and wholly disinterested. Unbelievably poor to non existent customer focus. We'll be leaving as soon as we can.

My wife was discriminated against by staff members. We have since cancelled our family membership and moved to virgin active and couldn’t be happier with the service provided by their professional staff.

“Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere…”

written by RodrigoAndrews on 25/11/2021

I think getting out of jail is easier than cancelling the overly expensive gym membership that David Lloyds provides… Since I became a member, they increased already super high price, but nothing in the club has changed (I understand inflations and everything, but other clubs were able to get away with it, and the price stayed the same). Moreover, they closed the club much earlier during the lockdown, making it impossible for me to come and enjoy the facilities due to work commitments. And after a few months of not using the gym, I finally decided to cancel the membership because I lost the job; they said I could not cancel and needed to give them some sort of documents…customer service was terrible the amount of time I said I lost the job and need to cancel yet she kept saying the same thing like a bloody human automatic machine with no empathy..bear in mind I’ve been a member for over three years now! It’s insane! Still, my membership is not cancelled yet! Wonder how much more money I will have to pay till this cancellation nightmare is over…

“Pretty Pattern”

written by Chriswatkins78 on 04/10/2021

I was in Milton Keynes for a meeting on Saturday sothought I’d drop by David Lloyd’s after. I went to get some food and a coffee to relieve the stress. I wasn’t treated great as the girl on the till came across aggressive and shouted instead of spoke. She had mousy hair in a ponytail if I remember. I ordered a latte and a flatbread, the young lad who made my coffee was really polite and he produced a great looking coffee with some fancy artwork so safe to say it was the best coffee I’ve had in a while. The food was great also so other than the bar lady on the till everything was great so thank you.

“Stay away from DL Bushey ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by TiffanyGlover on 28/09/2021

Save your money and invest in your health elsewhere as David Lloyds Bushey has the rudest and most unhelpful staff and the manager (who is supposedly in charge of the club) is extremely unprofessional and frankly very rude and argumentative. The facilities are badly looked after and if you have an issues or complaint they will simply become aggressive. Deeply disturbing behaviour displayed by the Manager from a club I pay so much for on Platinum membership. Allergy requests are ignored by kitchen staff who are just as rude - it’s a legal case waiting to happen! As a result I have cancelled my membership.

“Disgusting gym, decrepit equipment ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Joeswabey on 04/09/2021

Been a member for 4-5 months. Before I joined I believed David Lloyd was a premium decent gym. Changing rooms continuously reeling of urine , gym constantly reeling of body odour. Broken equipment in the gym which hasn’t been fixed in months, machines out of actions for weeks on end. Expected to pay full price when half of the gyms facilities were closed. Avoid at all costs.

“David Lloyd - Finchley Utterly deceitful”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cooldad on 03/08/2021

I joined online on 11 July 21 on replying to an ad for 3 months membership. I decided to cancel my membership on 27th July mainly as their clubroom looked like an old age home with decrepit furniture and also on my first visit I was informed that a number of their facilities were closed for repairs until December. I emailed them on 27th July advising them that I wished to cancel my membership. I received an email back saying I signed up for 12 months and I could not cancel my membership unless I had a good reason like, suffering hardship, being out of work or being ill. On visiting the club I was told there was no one to speak to about membership as they all work from home and there was no phone number by way of reaching them. DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THEM!!

“Terrible customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Clayf272 on 02/08/2021

I've been dealing with David Lloyd on-line customer services, I just wanted to remove my partner from our joint membership. I was advised that due to our contractual agreement, this would take effect from 1 July 21. I checked my bank statement in July but they hadn't made me the necessary adjustment, charging me the same amount that they had for the previous month. I contacted customer services again and awaited a reply, eventually receiving the response and thanking for me for bringing this to their attention (no apology) and advising they would refund me the difference (which they subsequently did) and my direct debit payments would be amended correctly from August 21. I've checked my bank statement again 2/8/21 and not only have they not made the necessary adjustment, to add insult to injury, they have charged me more than they did the previous month!! So here we go again, back in touch with customer services and see what happens this time round. No confidence in their lack of customer services, which is a shame, as otherwise it is a nice gym.

“The gym is collapsing. Basic facilities are missing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Masha16 on 12/07/2021

David Lloyd in Brighton is in really bad state: air conditioning broke down few months ago, it is so hot inside, impossible to exercise, showers are dirty and covered in mould, roof over the swimming pool has holes. The management is not responding to complaints and only interested in taking memberships money. Once you’ve signed up - you don’t exist for them. Awful place. Avoid!

“Serious issues throughout ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MarrkSS on 08/06/2021

A host of serious issues A host of problems some more serious than others. The Milton Keynes unit of David Lloyds, really let my family down with service standards of children’s care. I signed up as they have a children’s club, so my wife and I could work out and the kids go to sports club. During one of these sessions my son aged 4 was able to leave the room, travel through the busy dinning area and was found in the main reception by the busy car park. I complained and supported the unit changing their safety procedures. I asked for a discount as I informed David Lloyds that I couldn’t trust there care and would not return for kids club until my son was older and is now 8. So I didn’t want to pay for something we were too worried to use, ie there child care. They said no and were really unsympathetic. I reported them to Ofsted. During Covid and club closure they were very forceful in constant emails, calls and voicemails trying to get us to upgrade and pay more, previously they had 30 spaces and we rarely got a space for my son and daughter on the same club, they then dropped the spaces from 30 to 8 and wanted more money. Also constant calls for direct debits, which we cancelled during club closure as we don’t trust them, heavily worded emails of collection teams and the club was closed. The manager of Milton Keynes was always uncooperative and everything was about obtaining more money and offering less. The sauna was regularly closed for repair or refurbishment and you had to pay the same regardless. I just wanted a reasonable response and we would have got on with it. There were a number of positives but they foul taste of needing support and getting nothing back was too much for a young family. Fees went up every year, with less space due to more clients. We paid £230-250 per month. I have emailed, called and had meetings and still feel let down. Money first on their priorities list support and customer service was very far down the line in my personal experience and opinion

“David Lloyd Acton”

★★☆☆☆

written by ChadChase157 on 10/11/2020

Good facilities, but way overcrowded and exceptionally badly managed. When i was joining in 2018 i was told that the price (£145/month) was going to remain the same for the whole duration of my membership. Now it is £160. When challenged by myself and other members who joined at the same time, (before the club was open), the management response was “if you don’t have it in writing - forget it”. At the joining point they also promised that the changing rooms for adult members are separate from the families, however it is not true and all the changing rooms are overcrowded with kids. During the covid DL has been extremely crowded. To secure their profits, the club has introduced various cheaper offers (£200 for 3 months etc), which, together with cutting down amount of classes and shortening the opening hours, led to the club becoming really uncomfortably overcrowded. During all this time club continued changing the existing members the same fees and refused to freeze the membership without a 25% a month fee. At the same time the management kept sending us hypocritical emails about how they care about members health, social distancing and safety, completely ignoring the fact that people were literally on top of each other in changing rooms, gym, pool and jacuzzi, especially during the hot days. The club has 4 outdoor courts and 4 courts that are covered by bubble for the winter months. When you join, they state that the courts can only be used by platinum members, however they neglect to inform you that there are endless tennis classes for kids that they run in the bubble and that the coaches can block out chunks of time for private lessons, which makes it very difficult to book the court time that you want: you have to hunt for a slot 8-9 days in advance, and when you get on court, you might have a noisy kids session next to you. Besides (confirmed by receptionist) the club seems to also sell the court time to general public for £10/hour, which makes platinum membership nonsense. Many members, including me, handed their notice during the covid time only because of how disastrously badly the club was managed. It is generally very badly managed, but the crisis has shown the worse of it. Saying all that, the club has some very nice people amongst the stuff, who are friendly, professional and create good atmosphere. They just need a different management team. If by any chance, you are thinking of joining, make sure, you get all the promises in writing! Doesn’t mean the club would keep them, but you would be able to leave without the ridiculous 3 months notice.

“MONEY GRABBERS”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Coyle428 on 15/10/2020

David Lloyd has to be worst leisure centre operator in the UK. They have no customer focus and the company is only interested in taking your money. Just try extracating yourself from their contract. The Brighton Centre that I attended was mostly closed are restricted even before Covid-19. Now it is even worse.

“We joined with my family after the nice tour and...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Wright488 on 18/03/2020

We joined with my family after the nice tour and marketing speech we completely believed. Marketing contained the following: - We have group sessions, book any time, we have always free places or book 2 weeks advance - There is a kids club, there are always spaces, all sessions are synchronized with the most popular group sessions. - Swimming teaching is much better than elsewhere. - Tennis rating is captured by couch and then you are allowed to take part in fun group sessions. - Huge car park with plenty of places - Cancellation policy in place to make sure people can enjoy the facilities all the time - No word about 90 days membership cancellation - There is a membership fee revaluation ones a year, first 12 month no affect What we got: - Clubs are overcrowded, more members then capacity. You will sit with your phone in your hand every day at 8PM to book a session once it becomes available in the booking app, if you are lucky or fast fibre internet, you can book. Not possible to go down ad-hoc. - I joined to go to the gym, group sessions with the knowledge DL kids will be there for my 6y old. However the same valid for DL kids club, sessions are overcrowded, they take only cc 20-25 kids, places are booked fast. - I received lot of calls to sell coaching. Tennis coach, personal trainer, swim coach for a high fee. My kid went 2 times a week to swim. After a while they couldn’t hire a swim coach for a year for the Saturday class, so we had only cover teachers and the one who was still responsible for the class was practically working from home. My daughter didn’t improve. When I complained they came back with the terms and conditions. - My husband’s TENCAP rating wasn’t done for 4.5 month, closing him out of the tennis sessions. He only joined to play tennis. When I complained it was sorted. However to be able to join a higher class I guess he would need to pay for coaching as they found him weak for that class (he was a coach himself and have been playing tennis for over 40 years). I was rated very low, cannot even join sessions, just again if I pay for a coach. So, we have fun sessions, but we will make sure without paying us, we won’t let you join in. - The car park is huge, but because they are oversubscribed and in 2 years time they couldn’t solve an issue with the barrier, it is a massive frustration to find a spot where you can leave your car. - Cancellation policy: I was banned from the club for 2 x 7 days. My schedule is constantly changing. As I am forced to book 2 weeks advanced, it happened a few times that I had to cancel my session. Commuting issues, emergency meetings, work deadline change, etc. The rule says you have to cancel the group sessions 2 hrs before the class starts. However even you cancel on time, if the session was fully booked and no one takes your place, you will get a late cancellation notice, 2 more within 30 days will result in withdrawal of your booking rights for 7 days. - I cancelled on the 8th of Feb. They processed it for over 3 weeks, sent a confirmation on the 28th of Feb, saying the membership will end on the 1st of June, based on 90 days cancellation policy. Be very careful you sign a 12 month contact with 3 month cancellation, you will pay for an unusable service at least 15!!! month for a very high price tag. In my case it is 110 days!! - When we signed up, we started to pay 371 for 3 of us. After 3 month they raised the fee to 409, when we were specifically told that within the first 12 month no raise will affect us. I signalled my concerns to the customer team a year ago, but nothing was solved. I have an 8y old now, as the DL kids isn’t available I had to wait again for my husband. She is not allowed to the SPA, gym, group sessions etc. How I am supposed to go? I refused to pay 110 additional days, so my husband and daughter was banned from the club even they are willing to pay, but they want my money too. Ridiculous!!!

“Money Grabbers”

written by Nav1 on 09/02/2020

David Lloyd we’re promoting a 3 month membership offer. I joined for 3 months or at least I thought I had. A representative met with me & I assumed I had joined fior 3 months. After 3 months I noticed 2 extra monthly payments had been taken from my bank account. On questioning this I was told this was for a 3 month notice period. There was no mention of this but it is in the small print. Be very aware with this club on joining & terminating as they are not interested in you, just your money. Despicable.

“Chavvy Chigwell David Lloyd”

★★★☆☆

written by Larkinje25 on 06/02/2020

Chavvy Chigwell David Lloyd Its a fantastic facility ruined by way too many inconsiderate, ill mannered, selfish, chavvy, arrogant, entitled and unsavoury members who typify the area. Nothing worse than a chav with money and the fir coat, no knickers brigade. Used towels left on the changing room floor when towel bins are provided. Empty drinks bottles left on the changing room floor, benches or in empty lockers when bins are provided. Beard shavings left in the hand basins - disgusting! Shower gel/shampoo bottles left in shower cubicles. Free weights are simply left strewed across the gym rather than being replaced after use. Rubbish food. Fat & Ugly members wearing swimwear in the bar and loung areas. I could go on. The club should introduce rules and detail etiquette expected from members, which needs to be enforced. And, those who choose not to conform should have their membership revoked. If you fit into any of the above categories and find the described behaviour normal, you are going to feel right at home and absolutely love this place.

“Beware Membership Fee Increases!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Wyattrl360 on 12/12/2019

While the facilities are reasonably good, David Lloyd seem to have no care for existing members, as long as there is a ready supply of new members available. Once you are a member you will experience ridiculous and unjustified price increases every year (usually around Dec/Jan time when plenty of new members appear?!). There is no loyalty discount for staying with them. My fees have increased well over 15% in the last 3 years...totally unjustified. David Lloyd offer little care or explanation, and will often just quote your cancellation rights (you must give 3 months notice) if you dare to complain about the increases. Nice clubs, but the greed and opportunism of management make it very hard to continue my membership, and certainly make it impossible to recommend them

I am trying to cancel my membership with them because my work place has been changed. I used to work in Ruislip and now I am transferred to Fulham . The advisor told me if I am away more than 10 miles from the club , he can cancel my membership, but now he is telling me because there is a branch in the area I moved to , I am not entitled to this . I am going to put this in all media so people know about the BAD BAD customer service of this club .
