“I am very disappointed with 'Enders... I grew up...”

written by SouthLondoner on 12/03/2010

I am very disappointed with 'Enders... I grew up watching this show and now, I can not bring myself to watch the show. Why do Eastender's writers continue to portray ethnic minorities in such a bad light. I can not remember one ethnic minority character who was a good role model, not one. Even going back to Hattie Tavernier (Michelle Gayle), who got herself into all sorts of problems with that Steve character, right up to now with the Trueman family. It just seems that this show is determined to enforce racist stereotypes of all ethnic minority families from Asian families to Caribbeans.

what a joke eastenders has become.i have been watching eastenders for years now and i think a good looking (straight) asian british guy is a great threat to this program as they are represented as being gay or all as ugly as tanwar and as for tanwar having a relationship you put an asian girl for him (not white and i wonder why?)and all the asian or black girls you have in the show are always ending up with a white guy i wonder why?.they have just about managed to get a asian guy (saeed)and he turns out to be a gay.last nights episode(01/02/10) was a total mess why could'nt amira end up bumping in to an asian guy instead of a white guy and come on be real it is based on east london.i am not racist or against interacial mixes but this program should be made in a fair and equal manner.when they had a previous asian family in eastenders a few years ago they were a joke as they all ended up being minicab drivers and left the show .i personally think who ever is responsible for eastenders is racist or either jealous or insecure to bring in a good looking british asian straight guy in to eastenders ,sorry that i have to put it like this but this is my personal thought.

Southlondoner's Comment

Written on: 12/03/2010

I see where you're coming from and to some extent agree with you. It seems like all ethnic minorities want (and desire white partners) to be in relationships outside their race, that is what Eastenders is suggesting. The show also suggests that all young black youth are criminals, drug dealers and a general bad influence on white youth. It is so disturbing. Every Asian family on the square has been a joke, look at the previous Ferreira family, who loved Elvis Presley, now that was a joke in itself and not to mention the family was very unstable...it just gets worse.

“What has become of Eastenders? It has become so...”

written by on 19/01/2010

What has become of Eastenders? It has become so unrealistic it is just verging on utter rubbish. The whole Archie murder is so badly written! Ians arrest on tonights show was just pathetic and so far from what would actually happen in reality! It has become one of the most predictable, depressing, unrealistic shows there is. I watched tonights show purely because I had nodded off on the sofa and when I woke up it was on. I couldn't be bothered to get up and find the remote so suffered the last 15 mins of it. Surely they can allow one or two people on the show to be happy???? Hooray for Stacie and Bradley but no doubt they will crush that in a few weeks time. Yawn

Regards
A very cheesed off Noe Ex Eastenders fan!

Eastenders should to be good, but seems to of lost it all now. The story lines are not very good, the acting is not good. It just seems like they have lost what to write now. They dont seem to relate to reality and in its own world. Look at recent episode when the little bobby went missing, they were all looking for him, but no one seemed to think to call the police. i have stopped watching it now, think its time to stop making it.

eastenders is normally very good.it used to be a lot better but i still love it.they should make it 5 days a week not 4. sometimes when they start off a new story it can get boring but most of the time it is entertaining.one funny thing i find about it is that whenever something happy happens theres always something sad that happens to quickly.the end should be more happy.often when the storyline is surposed to be serious it can appear quite funny as the occasion is realistic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i also find that all the characters are really gobby and leary.

Stacy and Jean you've just pushed Eastenders top in my estimates. Both your acting tonight (9th Oct 2009) was so brilliant dealing with mental health and depression - such a subject that many find hard to deal with or face. Stacy you took on a new level of acting and Jean... well what can I say the both of you made Eastenders tonight a programme well worth watching. I hope my comments don't offend any who suffer from any of these symptoms as my ex husband had severe depression, so I do understand some elimaments. Stacy and Jean well done.

★★★☆☆

written by imj4eva on 04/05/2009

To be honest ever since the Danielle and Ronnnie storyline, which I think was the best acting since the whole show started, Eastenders has been going downhill with storylines like heather getting pregnant. They are really running out of ideas for this show.

“Eastenders is fast going downhill and I really think...”

written by on 14/04/2009

Eastenders is fast going downhill and I really think the Writers need to start watching it to see what we see.
1) Stacey is the most miserable depressing, unfriendly, character, wears belths bigger then skirts and high heels at a market stall during WINTER.... Frowns every second and has attitude and does not have an ounce of respect for her elders!
2) Chelsea cannot act to save her life- she talks as she reads a script and cannot act any emotion to what she is saying and I cannot watch her on screen! Who does the hiring in this pathetic show!!??
3) Max needs to be told to stop dragging his feet and does he not have a job to go to....
4) Poor Oscar - who actually brings him up as he is always dumped with the Neighbours. he has never been played with in that show.
5) Whitney needs to wake up and stop being a brat!
6) Can the Writers actually write something good Ronnie as she does deserve it ? How can a sister have a child with her sisters boyfriend - nasty!
7) The Danielle longest build-up really killed the show off for me- she had so many opportunities to tell Ronni and when she does, they kill her off - ho0w pathetic-Shame on Eastenders - they cannot, should not win any awards this year as they have no reason to ! it's been CRAP !

“Eastenders lives or dies by the families. It is at...”

★★★★☆

written by laraandamber on 06/04/2009

Eastenders lives or dies by the families. It is at its best when the stories get to the heart of intense familial relationships eg the Mitchells, or the many strands of the Slater-clan (the hight point of the series in the last decade was undoubtedly the Kat-Zoe storyline and the Mo-Trevor domestic violence period). The series relies upon long-standing established characters and the emotional develpoment of those characters. People who are untroubled and happy rarely make interesting drama catalists so to those who complain that Eastenders is too miserable I wholeheartedly disagree. There are plently of farcical storylines (that can of course be hit-and-miss) that offset the apprent ongoing misery of the characters. I do agree however that Eastenders suffers on occasion, like any other mult-stranded soap, from poor scripts and dodgy acting but on the whole I think the acting is very very good, and frequently unappreciated.
The recent Ronnie-Danielle-Archie storyline had me conflicted: beautifully laid out premise but occasionaly misjudged in the timing. I don't think there were problems with the scriptwriting, I just think a story which drip feeds information to the viewer that is unknown to the characters relies heavily on the reveal coming at the right moment and for many it felt as if the story went on too long. Actually we knew who Danielle was for far less time than we knew that Kat was really Zoe's mother, the difference was that Danielle wasn't given any other storylines other than her concern for her mother: we were never allowed to forget that she is 'Ronnie's-long-lost-daughter'. The acting on the reveal, however, was fantastic and throughout Ithe storyline I was always convinced of Danielle's inner torture and the irrationality of her actions; Larry Lamb is superb as the controlling Archie and Samantha Janus now has the spotlight on her.

I used to watch eastenders all the time but after the episode with ronnie and danielle both finding each other at long last i was so disappointed when she died after all that waiting why is it that all the time when something good can come of something it turns sour why couldnt ronnie have run and saved her that would have been a good ending and out of the ordinary.

“One funny thing I find on Eastenders is that whenever...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 03/04/2009

One funny thing I find on Eastenders is that whenever something happy happens there's always something sad that happens to quickly erase it, and then another sad thing...and another...and another. The problem is that the producers have the misconception that 'darkness sells'-in that they believe that by making the storylines horrifically depressing more people are going to watch it. I guess that this misconception has proved to be correct however, judging by some viewing figures.

However, it does not mean that the drama is very good. The fact is that EastEnders is one of the most depressing soaps around; someone helps another person it's for a darker reason than just wanting to help and the plot focuses on a couple episodes on the aforementioned 'darker reason'.

Generally the plot focus is sadness and tragedy, and while sometimes it can pull off to make a good, entertaining and interesting storyline, most of the time we get too depressed by just thinking about the plot, and turn over to a happier program.

A recommendation I'd give Eastenders is to pull off on the sad tragedies and focus on some more happy times; nearly every moment in Eastenders seems to be a horribly depressing cliffhanger that makes someone cry.

Overall, I don't think it's fair to give this a ridiculously low score; as, however inconsistent it is, the show does produce some gems in terms of storylines, and sometimes it can prove good, however, I still give it a low score of three out of ten, citing over-saturation of depressing and sad storylines, and for the most part generally bad acting and too many cliffhanger moments that cause the 'big' finale cliffhanger moment losing it's dramatic effect and thus leaving viewers uninterested in watching the resolution.
