“Cineworld, Stockport is Cheaper then most cinemas. ”

★★☆☆☆

written by Originallad on 16/02/2009

Cineworld, Stockport is Cheaper then most cinemas.
Has all the main films showing.
Never that busy, but the screens are too small.
The seats are worse then economy class on an aircraft - FAR worse for that matter.
My popcorn was cold and tasteless.

“Cineworld cinema seating is not particularly...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jackeroo on 17/01/2009

Cineworld cinema seating is not particularly comfortable, parking is expensive nearby, the food & drinks are expensive and not that good quality (not much vegetarian options) - they are obviously out to make as much money as possible at the expensive of customer service and quality. Sometimes the quality of the films aren't that great either...and sometimes the heating is off or the air conditioning is off which is annoying and uncomfortable. (at West India Quay). The Unlimited Card is good value if you go to the cinema more than 2 or 3 times a month. I found bad points to be: Long queues to buy / receive your tickets
Often freezing entrance hall
Staff not particularly friendly - high staff turnover
only 2 toilets at West India Quay - one is often out of action and its very far to get to the other especially if its during a film & you have to show your ticket again
as security at entrance to each corridor of cinemas
The food drink sweets etc are very expensive and not great quality
The programme always lasts about 30 mins and is predictable - if you attend regularly its also repetitive and if you arrive late they sometimes won't allow you entry
There is not a great selection of films
Also, the latest films tend to start about 9.30pm is on weekdays

Film 2000's Response to 433117_Jackeroo's Review

Written on: 17/02/2009

I disagree with this review because...on all occasions I have visited the toilets have all been in action. ALso the seats are always comfortable. I do agree that there are always large queues to buy food and drink. I ahve never used the car park as the cinema is a two minute walk from a DLR station!

On the whole Cineworld offers a poor service in a competitive market, they offer a lot in advertising but in reality the customer is paying over the odds for what they can get at the local independent cinemas, which offer a better customer service and don't really get bums on seat for blockbuster movies. I have cancelled my subscription to the 'Unlimited Card' as have most of my friends as we realised that the cinema was making money for nothing as most people working 9-5 do not benefit for paying the monthy subscription. Thank you but no thank you it's 'The Trycycle Cinema' from now on...

Ipswich Cineworld. I had bought a monthly Unlimited pass for my 12 year old son. After 6 months, he was refused entry to a 12 certificate film, and when he put me on the phone to them, the staff refused to check his age on their registered details (which when I later called the help centre, was exactly what they were supposed to do - the whole point of the age registration and photocard being precisely this). The oik on the phone called me 'mate' and seemed to have no idea of customer service. I have cancelled the pass.

The Cineworld staff blamed the smell on a problem with the drains. Yes obviously that's why they had a bin liner over a seat and a room smelling of vomit.

Lets see if they can regain my faith.

Stick with Odeon....not had a bad experience yet!!!

written by lancervhead on 30/04/2007

Cineworld has good sized screens and a well tiered seating layout (some others cinemas have them untiered so that some fat head in front of you blocks your view of half the screen).
The cinemas are always littered with rubbish.
Kids do seem to be able to run around and misbehave un-noticed by the staff.
Its not a bad place to watch a film, but it does not surprise me that cinema attendance is dropping in certain areas when you cannot see the film you want without some kind of disruption.

Visited in February 2007 to see Charlotte's Web. Had valid complaint about not being able to take my 4 year old daughter to the toilet through the nearest door. Manager unbelievably unhelpful.
Apparently you have to be a mind reader to know which doors to go through.

“I usually go tot he Showcase Cinemas, however, we...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by nyc on 11/02/2007

I usually go tot he Showcase Cinemas, however, we decided to go to Cineworld as the film we wanted to see was on at a slightly better time.

The first thing that put us off was the car park - which I know is probably not the cinema's fault - but it is extrememly inadequate for an 11-screen cinema, 4 restaurants, a shop, a hairdressers and a gym. We drove round for about 15 minutes just waiting for a space to become available.

When we got to the cinema, there was a rubbish bin by the door, overflowing and not smelling particularly nice.

The music playing in the foyer was very loud and was a heavy rock music! It was really offputting - something I'd expect to hear if I went to heavy metal night at the local pub!

At the box office there was a TV screen missing (there was a large empty bracket on the wall with a mess of wires all over it,) so only half of the show times were visible. We already knew what film we wanted and at what time, which was obviously a good move as I couldn't see any film time leaflets anywhere.

Anyway... we had bought a drink and got to our screen and the film was just about to start... only problem... there was no noise! Another customer had to go inform the management, although we had missed the first couple of minutes of the sound already!

About 15 minutes into the film, we heard very loud shouting, swearing, laughing, coming in to the screen, as they came to the front, we saw it was a group of about 10 young kids (about age 13/14).
They were shouting at thje top of their voices 'do you like your ******* film!'then they just stood at the front in the way of the film.

I decided I should best go tell a member of staff as I didn't want to say anything to them myself. I told a member of staff who said she would ask someone to come up, but as I was going back into the screen 3 of the boys came right up to me saying had I grassed on them and they 'squared up' to me, swearing at me into my face. I was very scared, but they left the screen. I wasn't sure if somone was coming or not, but I wanted to tell them what those kids had done, so I waited near the door for a manager. When one came, I told him but he didn't seem bothered he then turned to the kidds who were out in the foyer and told them they could have another chance!! I couldn't believe it! They had threatened me, and scared me, not to mention ruining the film for every other customer and he just let them straight back in!

The kids walked past me back into the screeen laughing about it, and (at this point I felt furious). I told the manager I couldn't believe he was not prepared to ask them to leave and that it was appalling!). He told me that I should calm down and just watch my film and said he didn't want to discuss it any more!

So I went back in the screen and obviously the kids knew I had told on them so they continued to heckle at me and throw sweet wrappers/popcorn in my direction so we made the decision to leave.

I thought this was absolutely appalling. I had gone with the intention of just wating a film quietly, whereas those kids had gone with the intention of distrupting the film and spoiling other people's enjoyment which, thanks to the manager, they had done.

I will definitely not be going back there if this is how even the managers treat the customers.

Helen Of Troy's Response to nyc's Review

Good review, though I think you were treated appallingly by the management at that Cinema. If they continue to allow kids to ruin the film for others, people will stop going there!

“It isn't very often I visit the cinema complex at...”

★★★★☆

written by emza2511 on 21/12/2006

It isn't very often I visit the cinema complex at Ashton Moss, but on this particular occasion, myself and my friend had planned to go and watch a film here.

We paid for our tickets no problem, and we didn't have to queue, and we went through to our screen no problem. However, numerous groups of people persisted to talk throughout the entire film!

I can withstand a little whispering, but 3 groups of youngsters seated at various places around the cinema talking loudly deliberately, I cannot tolerate. After asking politely, numerous times for them to be quiet, much to my annoyance, I had to leave the screen to go and complain. I spoke to a women who was collecting tickets when people came in, as this was the first person I came across. I explained that I was in screen 9 and people were talking around me. She said that someone else from my screen had also been to complain too, so she asked one of her colleagues to come into the screen with me and for me to point out who was making noise. I did so, and for about 10 minutes after the member of staff leaving, we were able to watch the film in peace, and then people starting talking again. It took me to complain a second time for these people to be removed from the cinema.

I accept that this isn't Cineworld's fault. However, it is their responsibility to ensure that people enjoy their visit, and I found it extremely irritating that after half of a film and 2 people complaining, they still didn't do anything!

What set out to be cinema trip ended in an enjoyable film (what I was able to see of it!) and me wanting to leave the cinema as soon as possible. There wasn't even any compensation offered, and I feel that this IS their responsibility. I will probably visit Cineworld again. However, if any body does go to this cinema please have the courtesy not to talk throughout, and respect other cinema users!

A great cinema- I have been to Cineworld several times and I haven't had any problems ever. The refreshments are, as usual very expensive, but that's the same wherever you go.

written by Gaynor on 22/06/2004

I have been to Cineworld a few times since it's opening in December 2003. It's located on a small leisure complex on Ashton moss where there is also Hollywood Bowl a couple of places to eat and drink like Frankey and Bennys, KFC and Ashton Moss pub part of the Brewers fare chain and a decently sized car park.
The cinema has Wednesday specials, VIP suites, Monday classics, Bollywood movies and the usual Saturday moring childrens movies at cheaper prices.
On the whole the cinema is clean, has friendly staff and is reasonably priced though my daughter bought an ice cream which was the size of a small scoop for an alarming £1.60 which I have to say was massivly over priced and we won't fall for that again!
I've not actually bought other food and drink inside the cinema, but there is a selection of the usual snacks, popcorn, fresh coffee and an upstairs bar area.

“When I lived at home in West Edinburgh, I had to...”

★★★★☆

written by Groovee on 01/07/2004

When I lived at home in West Edinburgh, I had to travel a good 10/15 minutes on the bus to get to the nearest cinema. Then one day, years after I had moved out, a new complex was unveiled which was going to contain a UGC cinema. The complex in is Fountainbridge and was named Fountain Park. It is close to Gorgie and Brunstfield and not far from the centre of Edinburgh.

I'd never heard of UCG, but seeing as they had easy underground parking we decided that we would try this cinema out. Since then we have always gone here as it has underground parking and if you are there for less than 4 hours there is a special stamped which means that you get free parking and there are a couple of eating places meaning that you can do it all in a oner before heading home.

About 18 months ago the cinema underwent a facelift. Though to be truthful I have no idea why. As you enter through the automatic doors, above you head is the list and times of films. I usually check the website or local paper first. As soon as you have entered the doors, you are transported in to a big area which is spacious at quiet times. Ahead of you is about 5/6 desks where you can purchase tickets. Though in all the times I have gone I have always seen only about 2 members of staff. At quiet times you walk right up to the desks and behind the desks are the film lists telling you if they are sold out or not. IN my opinion although this part of the cinema is right at the big windows which are very airy and let in a lot of light, the actual desk part is very dark and dull. At the end of the row of desks on the right hand side is a little machine. This is the machine which you put your parking ticket in when the light is green and once it turns red, you have free parking for 4 hours. I always tend to do this as soon as I have paid for my tickets otherwise I forget.

You always turn right when you have your tickets and this brings you to the party room. I'm not too sure about how things work, but you can hire the party room which is bright and spacious with very nice bright decent furniture. I keep forgetting to enquire about using the party room as it is an excellent idea for younger children to see a film and then head to the party room for food. Although there is a Pizza Hut right next door which regularly has large parties going on after a film.

Ahead off the party room is the food bit. You can get hotdogs, popcorn, nachos. Popcorn is available in 3 sizes and you choose which size you want from the big stand in the middle of the floor and take it to the counter. Either side of the counter are juice dispensers. Different sizes again are available as well as ice. Usually kept clean but often after children are sent by their lazy parents to get juice by themselves a mess can be left behind. There are also freezers with lollies and ice cream. Stands with crisps and bags of sweets are here too. It's sometimes worth arriving earlier than your film so that you can spend time choosing what you want.

As you leave this are to head towards the screen area, you will come across a pick and mix area with every type of sweet imaginable. As usual these come with the bags which are heavy, hence charging you more money. You can choose your sweets first and pay for them with your popcorn, juice, hot dog and nachos. Just beyond the pick and mix just before you go through the double doors to the screen you are met by an ice cream counter. We never have ice cream but it does always look delicious.

Once you have all your food, you head towards the 2 sets of double doors. The one on the right is for you to go through and you hand over your tickets as you go through and you are usually told which screen your film is showing in. The numbers start on the right-hand side and go up one side and head back down the other side. Screen 13 is at the top. I believe this is the luxury one where there are seats of two sat separately and waiter service brings you your drinks and refreshments. I've never tried this so can't fully comment or tell you about it.

The auditoriums themselves vary in size. Some have the walkway up the middle or other's have them to the side. The walk ways are ramp like making this easy for disabled customers and the seating goes up in rows with plenty space and seating at the front for wheel chairs. The space in between the seats varies according to the row you are in. Last week I could not reach the seat in front in the row we were in. I'm 5ft tall so that shows just how much room there was. Others sometimes my feet reach with a slight bend. The seats are roomy and have space for your juice. There is plenty of room on the floor for any bags etc . The seats are fixed and you never need to have the problems of the seat folding up on you. Booster seats are available for children but they are made of a hard plastic and our daughter has never had a problem seeing the screen from her seat. The auditoriums are always very cool and I've never felt too hot, but sometimes feel too cold.

The screens are large and any seat will give you a good view. The sound can be quite loud when it first comes on but you soon get used to this. Because of the space in between all the seats and rows there is never usually a problem with anyone being stuck behind a big head either. One complaint is that there are no litter bins in the auditoriums. Often when a film has finished I either trip over peoples left rubbish or I end up carrying loads of rubbish until I find a bin in the foyer. This would possibly make less work for people cleaning and would encourage cinema goers to be cleaner.

The toilets are on either side of the screen corridor. Ladies on one side and men's on the other. The ladies I can comment on. There are about 20 cubicles and at either end of the row of loo's is a washing area and mirrors with hand driers. There are buckets if you dry your hands with loo roll but there are no paper towels. There is also halfway up the loos on one side a wee wash area with 2 sinks. The toilets have always been kept clean and I have never had cause to complain about them. There is always soap in the dispensers. But if children have been left unattended the sinks can sometimes get blocked.

Upstairs can be found in the main foyer. The stairs leading up to the cafe/bar and there is also a lift available. The cafe is roomy and non smoking which is great. I've never seen children up here and wouldn't take my children up here. The drinks from the bar are reasonably priced. You can also get food in here too. But I didn't see a menu but I have had nacho's from here before which were great. The bar has never been busy when I have been there either. Some tables have comfy chairs like in a lounge while others are just normal sitting day to day chairs in a cafe.

I do like this cinema. The free parking is a huge bonus with the parking problems in Edinburgh, but the clean and tidy cinema is what encourages me to return. The cool screens and plenty room makes you feel comfortable especially with films getting longer and longer. I've only once been stiff when seeing a film but I was 7 months pregnant with pelvic problems. The prices are fairly reasonable too. If you go before 12pm it costs about £2.75 per person. This is an excellent deal if you do not have much money and may have a couple of children. This would work out a lot cheaper. After that for an adult £5.60 and £3.20 for children. Family tickets are available at around £3.75 each or something like that. If you are a regular cinema goer, it may be worth investing in the unlimited pass. This costs £9.99 for a month and must be taken for at least 12 months. This gives you as many films as you want for that £10 which would make an excellent saving. It's a very child friendly cinema too. Saturday and Sunday mornings usually have a kids special on which is a great idea if you have a child who wants to go to the cinema. I've never once had a problem getting tickets and last week booked for the first time over the net. When I went to collect my tickets I went up to the ATM which is for the bookings. Put my card in and my tickets were printed out in seconds. So much quicker than waiting to get tickets and gave more time in the bar. It is very handy for getting to via bus routes and taxi's can always be found on the street. There are plenty bars nearby and the town centre isn't far either. I just wish that they had built this before I left home as it would have been so handy. I have visited other cinemas but I definitely find this one has an atmosphere and isn't as expensive as some of the others. Worth a visit if you are in Edinburgh and fancy a film too.
