“A pitty that reality does not match their TV Ads”

written by RickyDz on 07/10/2011

33 Leeds - Otley Please stop medling with the intermidiate terminus' (Horsforth, Yeadon, Guiseley, White Cross, Menston). It's difficult to remember which departure times turn back before reaching my destination. The drivers could be more polite. The quality of the vehicle varies widely from brand new to old & decrebid. On a positive note they run frequently during the daytime & the new buses are very nice.

written by on 10/12/2010

Unfortunatley I have to rely heavily on public transport to get around and first bus service is the worst service I have encountered. Even without bad weather their busses are continously late or fail to arrive at all. Some (and I must stress some as some of the drivers are of course lovely people) of the drivers are rude and arrogant despite being and hour late and me being perfectly polite. I have 3 busses I can get on that serve near my area and not one of these turned up in an hour and a half period in which I had to resort to taking a taxi so a routine journey that ussually takes me 40minutes on busses took me three hours. I wouldn't treat a stray dog like first bus service treats its customers most of which are vunerable people who are too yound or old to drive.

“!! APPALING SERVICE !! ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 31/07/2010

!! APPALING SERVICE !!
I use First buses frequently especially the 240. I never had a problem with them until recently. Buses are now never on time. I stood at the bus stop waiting for atleast 25minutes for a 240 service to the buchanan bus station from the tollcross area. I can understand there is a delay in the evening services but come on it was only 11am. Anyhows, the bus finally arrives and guess what? its all packed! wher am i supposed to sit? perhaps i shouldve been allowed free onto the bus due to no seats being available? The journey carried on till the parkhead depot where the bus aparently broke down. The bus driver never alerted any of the passengers. It was only when i seen people running out like it was some sort of stampede, i thought what the hell is going on? Another passenger asked me "why is everyone getting off"? I replied "I havent the slightest idea". Until fellow passenger decided to shout out "breakdown!!!" like it was some sort of bomb ticking away ready to blow any second. It sure was in my mind i tell you !!!

This has not only happened one nor twice but sooo many times that i have lost count. I always tried not to think of it but FIRST GLASGOW are surely taking us for a ride not sure what the destination is exactly.
Me being a student and living practically on £200 a month cant fork out £1.75 per journey. I used to take two buses until i realised the majority of my money went towards FIRST. I starved myself occasionally just so that i could get to UNI on time but enough is enough people. From now on i will walk 7miles from UNI to my HOUSE and vice versa.

I hope FIRST are happy with what theyv done, after paying thousands of money towards my bus jouneys has not only left me emotionally disturbed for life but it feels like i was rap*d umpteen times (and even had the money snatched off me. First would still be rapi*g me even if i was dead !!!!

“Well if the government and environmentalists want us...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/06/2010

Well if the government and environmentalists want us to switch to using public transport rather than driving to work everyday, they better make a better alternative than the car because the Firstbus service is woeful.

If, like myself, you have to change to a different bus in the centre of town to get a bus that goes somewhere near your workplace, it will cost an arm and a leg, e.g. It costs me £934 a year to run my car to and from work including taxes, insurance and mot. The bus on the other hand costs £1200 in fares alone, of which our local PTE subsidises, not mentioning the extra time i lose in getting early buses to make sure i don't miss the connection to work!

Plus the drivers are miserable people who don't care about smooth driving or cars around them.

Learn the art of customer service guys!

★★☆☆☆

written by on 27/11/2009

Although First's service has improved slightly in the year or so I have had to use them regularly, they are still quite bad. Fares are pretty high, e.g. £3.70 for a 2-trip ticket in this area at the moment - I'm lucky to have been able to buy a discounted 3-month pass from my college. The buses are ALWAYS dirty - litter on the floor, dirt on the window ledges etc. The seats in some of the vehicles are quite uncomfortable - they seem to have been badly designed! The service has become a bit more reliable recently, but I still have to make sure I keep up to date on alternative routes as there are still times when bus nearest to where I live doesn't turn up. I can't wait to pass my driving test - a car will be cleaner, more comfortable and will be more likely to get me to places on time!

★★★☆☆

written by 34es on 22/11/2009

On the 14th November 2009 I used the first park and ride service from Upton in Chester to Chester main town. The que for the bus was longer than 2 bus stops. A good thing is you don't have to buy your tickets on the bus you buy them at the ticket machine by the bus stop for a reasonable price. As soon as the bus arrives and everyone has got off it is an free for all to get a seat on the volvo bus. Anyway when I got on the bus with my family guess what there wasn't a single seat left so I had to stand at the front of the bus which was not comfortable!! As soon as I said hi to the driver you would think he would say hi back. He just ignored me. As soon as he pulled off the stop I was thrown backwards and when he braked I was thrown foward. When he turned I was thrown to which ever way he turned. However the return journey was the exact opposite.

Happy journeys with first!!

written by on 14/11/2009

First buses are overall pretty good it's what you get for a few quid here and there.

Newer buses on more pleasant routes are quite clean, most though are pretty dirty, most drivers are grumpy and hardly speak when your asking for your fare.

Quite good value for money bit of a rip off on some routes though.

I'd reccomend for a friend if you want to get from A to B

“Timetables are the real problem. Only good thing about...”

★★★★☆

written by Tarc on 08/01/2009

Timetables are the real problem. Only good thing about them is that every single stop has a unique set of timetables made specifically for that stop (timewise), pretty common thing though.
But lot of services come infrequent. Now, it would be understandable, one can always complain about something like that. But, it's the distribution, there are peaktimes, morning and afternoon, where obviously most of the passengers are using the buses (or would like to use, apparently). It's still a common complain, so nothing extra here though.
The other thing is, timetables often say "10 mins or better" etc, whereas in reality it's not even close. Once I had to wait 40 mins for a bus only to realize it was only going as far as the garage...
Another thing, when it says "At every half an hour", you just don't know WHEN it would be at the stop you want to use... should you wait half an hour or what. It doesn't say how much time it takes for a bus to get to that stop from where it started.

If you like being treated like you're a criminal and bullied by the bus driver, this service is the one for you! I'd rather pay a little more for a taxi, at least the drivers are on time and polite!

★☆☆☆☆

written by goldfish75 on 26/07/2007

A bus service that is supposed to run every 15 minutes either doesn't show at all or is very late. I am specifically talking about the 54 bus in particular. Yesterday night at 5.10pm I waited for a bus that turned up at 5.38pm. I also found the driver to be unpleasant.

written by Selkie on 16/08/2006

I got a First annual pass, and I will never do so again - when it expires, I plan to buy a bicycle. I've found the 26/27 and 21/22 routes particularly unreliable, with roughly 30% odds that I will end up forced to walk no matter how hard I try to catch the evening buses. A few kindly drivers cannot compensate for the overall uselessness of this service.

★☆☆☆☆

written by stereocatz on 20/02/2006

The First Bus service in Bristol is appalling, I reguarly have to wait up to 40 mins for a service that is supposed to run every 12-15 minutes. When the busses do arrive they are often overcrowded, old and dirty, and we have to pay over £4 for a day ticket for the privilege! Most of the drivers are either miserable, or don't speak English, although there a few that try their best and are friendly and helpful. Overall, the service is unreliable and overpriced, however with no alternative method of getting to work I have no choice but to continue lining the pockets of those in charge of First.

“I'm a commuter on First Bus in Bristol and it's...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by boydell on 22/01/2006

I'm a commuter on First Bus in Bristol and it's amazing how similar my story is to the other reviews on here (apart from the one written by the MD of First Bus or whoever he is!).

What makes it even more surprising is that First regularly say that the reason the service is poor is because Bristol traffic is so bad, and then point to 'successes' in other areas of the country to show that, basically, it's Bristol Council's fault for not sorting out the traffic.

Considering that Bristol Council is the potential competitor that 90% of the public want - this tactic suddenly makes very good 'business sense' for the private plunderers!!

First Bus hide behind their profits and leave it for the poor drivers to take the flak for a company that they hate as much as the customers. This is not on and I for one will be campaigning in Bristol to see the buses returned to public hands. I hope you are doing the same and wish you luck if you are!

★★☆☆☆

written by angelis on 18/01/2006

First Bus pertains specifically to route 95 through the Scottish Borders.
The Scania single-decks are fast and smooth... and very rare. The usual bus is a smelly, noisy and dirty ex-City of Northampton double-deck, or an old single-deck of dubious parentage. The cost of the travel is silly (it's cheaper to drive even if you factor in fuel, insurance tax etc.) The timetabling is a joke with buses (sometimes) arriving (and leaving) early, but usually (very) late. No useable evening service. The Midlothian area to the north fares much better in terms of fare and service levels and rolling stock.

“First should be given credit where credit is due. They...”

★★★★☆

written by Skotl4nd on 12/05/2005

First should be given credit where credit is due. They did not become the UK's largest bus operator because of the minority groups experiences. Its true, some buses do not turn up on time, but its not the companys fault. The driver of the bus cannot control the traffic issues that major cities have.

First offer high frequency services, some as often as every 5 minutes (each area varies).

Many of Firsts buses are low floor easy access. The majority of the fleet is currently been modernised, with 1000 new buses to be put into service throughout 2005, with many areas having just invested on buses already. ( Glasgow, Manchester )

First offer great value for money and is by far the way to go if you are using the bus to travel.
