“Huge premium rise after no claims”

★☆☆☆☆

written by chericbaker on 20/12/2011

We used to have all our insurance policies with Direct Line but despite almost never claiming they pushed us away with huge premium increases. Strangely Churchill (same ownership as DL) was the one we switched to for house & contents insurance. At the first renewal (no claims) Churchill wanted much more but got reasonable when I phoned. The second renewal (no claims again) was different - they asked for 65% more premium and when I phoned would not budge, and had no other explanation than introductory rates. The lady I spoke to said she thought they should do more to keep existing customers. It baffles me how companies can so casually shed their best customers - we've not claimed anything on home insurance for over 15 years. So now I've moved to Policy Expert.

“Be careful when cancelling an auto-renewal”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gilesjuk on 12/12/2011

I phoned up to cancel an auto-renewal as I had taken out cover with Direct Line (I swap between the two as they always bump up the renewal). A few weeks later the schedule turned up and I noticed the money had gone out of the bank. So I phoned up and told them to cancel it as I had already told them to cancel it. I've now been charged a cancellation fee for cancelling a policy I didn't want and told them I didn't want! So if you call up to cancel a renewal I would check and double check and triple check the call centre people have understood what you mean as they're obviously daydreaming.

“My terrible ongoing experience with CHURCHILL HOME...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SimonTaylor on 13/10/2011

Hello all i thought id share my CHURCHILL HOME CONTENTS INSURANCE experience with you! On 31st May 2011 i returned home from a weeks holiday to find out id been broken into, I called the police stright away and they arrived about 4 hours later (3.30am) The following day i rang my insurance (CHURCHILL)) to report this and ask for a claims form, I was told they dont send a claims form they do a telephone interview so i said id have to make a full list of missing items after the finger print people had been as id been told not to touch anything untill they had been, Later in the day i went through a telephone interview with CHURCHILL and after that i was told i would be contacted by a loss adjuster they would be appointing. On 3rd June i was contacted by the loss adjuster with an appointment for 7th June. On 7th June i had my appointment with a stoney faced unsympathetic loss adjuster and i gave him the details of what had happened and any recipts/instruction books/photos i had for missing items i showed him the window which had been forced to gain access, Two weeks later (june 21st) i recived a lovely letter from CHURCHILL to tell me they had refered my claim to another loss adjusting company and the 1st loss adjuster would have nothing more to do with my claim "Furthermore we reserve any rights we may have to avoid your policy" the letter went on to say! (avoid your policy means not pay out) I called CHURCHILL to complain about the tone of their letter and after waiting 35 mins to actually talk to someone i was assured it was a standerd letter with standerd wording..to which i replied they should change it as its not nice and makes you panic and wonder if you filled in your insurance application correctly when taking insurance out (i checked and i had) Three weeks further on (july 12th) having heard nothing from anyone i again called CHURCHILL and this time after only 25 mins!i was put through to somebody! they checked on their computer and asked could they call me back within an hour!, The following day i was contacted by CHURCHILL who said that although 3 weeks previous i had been written to to tell me my claim had been refered to another loss adjusting company that "somehow" they (CHURCHILL) had forgotten to inform this new loss adjusting company that they were being involved in my claim ! They said they would be sending me a cheque for £30 as compensation for this error! i told them firmly but politly i didnt care about the £30 i just wanted my claim sorting out! and they could give the £30 to a cancer charity to which they replied they would send the cheque to me and if i wanted to donate it then it was up to me! I was again told the NEW loss adjuster would be in touch asap with me and i was contacted 2 days later and another date to see this new loss adjuster was made, This new date was 20th july ( SIX WEEKS AFTER MY 1ST LOSS ADJUSTER MEETING) On 20th July i had my meeting with the new loss adjuster which was basically the same as the 1st loss adjuster but a different company! i was asked if i had any recipts/photos/instruction manuals for missing items to which i replied id given these to the 1st loss adjuster! (it turns out they were never found again as the 1st loss adjuster had missplaced/lost them all !!) 3 weeks later (aug 10th) i recived a letter from the loss adjuster to say he was going through various checks (trying to find a way to not pay my claim) and he enclosed a form for me to sign enabling him to gain access to my police crime report which i signed and sent back. A week later (16th aug) i recived another letter from the loss adjuster saying he had compleated his checks and thay were all ok and he had applied for the police crime report "which could take up to 12 weeks to recive" and if my crime report didnt say "forced entry" my claim would be voided! in other words if id left a door unlocked or window open (id already shown them the damaged window before it had been repaired) this is what they were pinning their hopes on! 6 weeks later (26th sept) i recived a letter from the loss adjuster saying he had recived my police crime report but he was going on holiday for a week so would read it when he got back !! (17 weeks after my breakin !!) and they cant be bothered to make it a priority! 12 days later 8th october i recived a letter from the loss adjuster to say he had read my crime report and as id told him it did say forced entry! he had written his report and e/mailed it to CHURCHILL and CHURCHILL had got back intouch with him and wanted him to ask me why on my police crime report it mentioned 3 items of jewellery where as on my insurance claim i was claiming for 11 items of jewellery! I called CHURCHILL re this and was told after 30 mins of listening to some music that my insurance case manager (this is the person who sent me the nice letter earlier on and forgot to inform the new loss adjusting company they were dealing with my claim) had gone on holiday and could i adress any issues via the loss adjuster. I managed to get in touch with the loss adjuster and told him the reason my crime report had a different amount of jewellery items on compaired to my loss list was because when the police arrived at 3.30am in the morning they never went through or asked for a full list of what had gone missing,My jewellery box was on my bed empty and when i touched on two items of jewellery the officer told me it didnt matter as he wasnt taking a list and i would recive a letter from the police in a few days with a form to fill in telling them everything taken in the breakin and to send it back to them. This was done the week following my breakin. This was 1 week ago and no news yet but i will uptate this acordingly, by the way im in my 40s and this is my 1st claim in case anyone was wondering! PS i didnt get the cheque for £30 either ! sorry its so long but its detailed !

“Attempted burglary ”

★★★★☆

written by on 11/10/2011

This time last year, when it came for me to revew my home insurance I changed from Nat West to Churchill because Nat West hiked my premiums after 10 years of paying them lots of money without ever making a claim. One month later someone tried to kick in my front door that I had paid £2,5000 for a few months previously. That turned out to be money well spent as they did not get through the front door despite strenuous efforts. They did, however, damage the door to such an extent that it required replacment. I phoned Churchill with some concern given that I had just taken out the policy with them. I have to say I was pleasantly suprised. They sent someone out to make the door safe the same night. I had to pay £90 upfront for this but it was included in the settlement value of the claim. They also agreed that the door should be replaced like for like and as it was a non-standard door made by a specialist company they did not quibble about me using the company that had installed the original door. It took a few phone calls to get things moving but the custmer service representatives I spoke to were, by and large, friendly and helpful. My claim was paid in full and I got a replacement door matching the exact specifications of my previous door. Overall, very impressed with Churchill and so an renewing with them this year despite the fact that the premiums have gone up now that I have lost my no claims bonus.

“I have been 'covered' by Churchill for two years....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/05/2011

I have been 'covered' by Churchill for two years. Recently I noticed that the main soil drain for the house was blocked. This has happened before and it was root ingress penetrating old clay drains. My previous insurer took care of this problem but Churchill rejected the claim. Despite the fact that drainage is an essential part of my insurance and I was told said drains were covered when I took the policy out, Churchill will not cover this claim. I was lied to regarding what is covered despite my specific need for drainage cover. Not impressed in the slightest.
Money for nothing? Yes.

“RE: Nationwide (underwritten by Churchill) home and...”

RE: Nationwide (underwritten by Churchill) home and buildings cover

I'm in the process of a claim, that was started 6 months ago. It is still to be fully resolved!

My flat was damaged as results of the flat aboves central heating pipe being damaged by cowboy builders. The result, 2 ceilings coming down and the walls and floors damaged.

I was with Nationwide, who are underwritten by Churchill, since my claim is a recovery claim it is dealt by Churchill.

Firstly, customer service is terrible and riddled with misinformation and simply put, lies! I recorded my conversations with churchill so as not to miss anything, the points made and actions required as stated by one 'claims specialist' differed from anothers. When I tried to determine who was right and what I should do, they tried to blame me for the 'misunderstanding' by stating I said things that I hadn't - I played the recording back to them and then they finally conceded that they made the mistake. A complaint was made, which apparently sped my claim along the claims pipeline- another lie!

Secondly, No information is given on how payment is to be made to the contractors, the contractors will not start the work until they are sure they will be paid - hence why my claim is still in process!

Thirdly, the time taken to deal with queries takes an incredibly long time, 6 months and counting. This and the misinformation and lies, strike me that Churchill do not apply the necessary care and diligence to have claims dealt with in a reasonable amount of time - as stated in there terms and conditions.

Fourth, they (nationwide) tried to up my premiums, despite the claim not being completed and my excess not being paid. Something I was told (and recorded) would not happen until the excess was paid and only after the renewal date. Again I complained and after over a month of 'arguing' costing over £100 worth of calls (no freephone number given) they conceded and reduced my premium to what it should be - saving almost £100 a month

In short avoid them and nationwide, it is a nightmare dealing with them!!!!!!!! There service it terrible and borders on negligent!!!!!!!

“My first claim in about 12 years. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mark905 on 14/04/2011

My first claim in about 12 years.
Fire damage to kitchen work top, to replace my current worktop if it's available in that style,
would not match the other sections that have faded.
Churchill said that they will only replace that one section not the other bits attached to it. So I have to have an odd section or pay for the rest myself.
My claim is for £659

Very poor service avoid them

“I claimed for floorboard damage in early jan this year...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 23/03/2011

I claimed for floorboard damage in early jan this year (2011). After two phone calls when I waited 25 mins then 15 mins I gave up phoning and said I would only use email. After around 6 emails which all give an automatic response I have had no normal response to any email whatsoever. I did get a voucher for vinyl replacement fairly quickly, but can't purchase vinyl until floorboards get repaired. Now heading to 3 months without response and am considering contacting sunday newspapers for help. Never again with Churchill, definitely the worst insurance company I have dealt with in some 40 odd years of insuring property.

written by on 07/03/2011

Had a burst water pipe over the Christmas period. Took forever to get through to the Churchill claims dept.Had an initial inspection of the damage and then a visit from Crawfords Loss Adjusters. I was told by them it would be quicker for me to send in my own quotes for repairs. I sent these quotes in and have heard nothing since.Crawfords ignore all phonecalls and emails.
Nearly 3 months since initial claim and no conclusion reached,
Wish I had read these reviews before insuring with Churchill-NEVER AGAIN!

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 07/03/2011

I have been a faithful customer with Churchill for nine years and never claimed until today. I have explained my situation to them and they will not help me with my request. In a world in which we live honesty isn't a common quality but I believe that is wrong and so was honest about what happened, that my daughter kicked front door and in turn damaged it. There reply was because it was a family member that I cannot claim insurance. Although being a faithful customer for nine years I believe this is the wrong service to give especially when I have being honest with the situation. I think it is a disgraceful display of customer service and I will advice anyone thinking of taking up insurance with this company not to do so.

written by seachaplain on 04/03/2011

My wife fell and stood on out Sony laptop cracking the screen. We went to get it fixed for £75 but when we sent it off for repair the company said it was the laptop that had died. I refused their quote of £350 - rip off merchants. Decided to claim under Home Contents Insurance and they agreed to repair. Courier picked it up and it was returned fast - new screen only - nothing wrong with the motherboard!
Service form Churchill was great and will be renewing for another year tomorrow - slightly higher premium than last year, but that is only to be expected after making a claim. Having shopped around online best quote was double what Churchill were quoting.
Highly recommend them.

written by on 09/02/2011

We had a burst pipe a few days before Christmas under the upstairs landing which damaged the wood veneer and also brought down the kitchen ceiling below it. I sent lots of photos and quotes and they said to get the repairs done and if under £1000 they would pay out in 7 to 10 days. The quotes came in at £1035 so we got going with repairs, but it's been 9 weeks and now they say they wont cover the damaged pipe or the damaged wood veneer because we pulled the boards up ourselves! How else would we have reached the burst pipe? Now they want to send out an assessor. What's the point? The repairs are completed. Might as well drop the claim and will def switch insurers.

I had the misfortune to have 3 burst pipes whilst I was on holiday over Christmas 2010. The damage affected plastering, carpets and a 10mth old leather suite. Chuchill Insurance dealt with and paid out my claim in full, in 5 weeks. No quibbles at all. First class service throughout

Pathetic service, I would not use them again. I made a claim for a faulty sewage pump which on an initial call they immediately dismissed saying it was not covered, however I had forgotten I had emergency home cover by which time I had paid out myself to replace the pump, after that they just gave me the run-around, they wrote one letter to say there were looking into it and 2 months later I had heard nothing so phone again and waited 30 minutes to get a reply, was then given another number to phone to be then told "I have no record of that here"so as I am writing this I am waiting to get through again on the 0945 number, RUBBISH SERVICE!!!!!

written by kellys eye99 on 27/12/2010

I have recently had major home damage caused by a burst pipe in the loft. I was away in Tenerife, the heating on but locally the temperature dropped to -20c. I was able to contact Churchill by phone (quickly) and they promised to get an emergency company (Rainbow) out to my house( via the keyholder) within 4hrs. When I arrived home 24 hrs later the pipe had been repaired, wallpaper and carpets removed, dehumidifiers and fans installed. In addition they have checked the wall moisture level weekly. Churchill had a firm of loss assessors(gabrobins) out to my home within 4 days and so far I have no complaints about the way the claim is progressing.I will report on this at a later date -- watch this space!!!!. However the main point I wish to make is that without the quick response of Churchill and the excellent Rainbow I dread to think of the damage.

“I cannot find the words to express the distress...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/12/2010

I cannot find the words to express the distress Churchill Insurance have caused to my elderly parents over the recent bad weather. A simple burst pipe has turned into a complete nightmare and because Churchill still haven't agreed repairs, has now totally ruined Christmas for them. The first estimate was rejected as being too expensive, the second, again too expensive,it goes on and on. Meanwhile, my parents are just expected to live in a cold, water damaged house, whilst they argue over £100. This seems to be a recurring thing with Churchill, no quote is ever 'cheap enough' and consequently, claims take forever, if they ever payout. My parents have been customers for a few years now, but I will make sure nither them or any friends use them again, I can only find one positive review for them and that is a person who seems pleased they rang back within 10 minutes to inform them they weren't insured!! This company is an absolute joke, someone who regulates insurance companies needs to look at his company, they just take peoples money and rip them off - total fraudsters - AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE - i have given them one star, as the machine wouldn't allow me to give them 0.

In the autumn of 2010 I made a claim for a burst pipe in my bathroom, which caused damaged to the bathroom floor and entire kitchen ceiling. After the usual waiting in queues on the phone etc etc, Churchill were very obstructiv, they told me I was only covered for the damaged ceiling, not the damaged pipe, excuses excuses. I had to get quote after quote - none of which they approved and we were only talking £400 !! They apporved one quote over the phone, I had the work done and they refused to pay - offering £200 less than the estimate...Cowboys, avoid at all cost, after years of being a customer, I will not be renewing my house or car insurance. Tip - call their 0800 number and get redirected, don't use their claims number!

After heavy snow for two weeks, the build up of ice bought 4 sections of gutter of my house. Churchill sent a claims assessor who told me that "as the guttering had fallen off the it could not have been fitted correctly" and they refused to pay for the repairs. After 10 years of using Churchill with no previous claim I could not believe their decision. Insurance with Churchill is not worth the paper it is written on. Avoid at all cost.
