Tarquin2's Response to Tarquin2's Review

Written on: 18/05/2013

I posted a letter recorded delivery and got a reply the next day....

My letter included...

I have tried to log in to my account to cancel it and all future renewals, but am told that I must pay your unsolicited invoices before I can do this.
Having taken legal advice I consider that this contract is subject to the terms of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999.
As you will be aware Schedule 2 paragraph 1 of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 makes reference to contracts irrevocably binding the consumer to terms with which he had no real opportunity of becoming acquainted before the conclusion of the contract.
Additionally the contra proferentem rule indicates that a contractual term which has not been individually negotiated shall be regarded as unfair if contrary to the requirement of good faith it causes significant imbalance in the parties’ rights and obligations arising under the contract to the detriment of the consumer.
By burying charges massively higher than I was made aware of I consider and am advised that these terms are in conscionable and unenforceable. Good faith requires that these terms be made known to me in the clearest terms at the time.
Please confirm accordingly that you have closed my account and are dropping the matter with immediate effect. If I do not receive this confirmation within the next 7 days, I will have no option but to make a formal complaint both to the Office of Fair Trading and the trading standards section of the local Council.
Dear Mr X,

Thank you for your letter.

I have checked the account and we have never received a request to close down the hosting with us which is why the fee has become due, this is as per the Terms & Conditions you agreed to and does not subject to the Unfair Contract Terms Act.

However, I have checked the ticket history and I can see we were contacted by a gentleman regarding your account in February 2013 regarding the hosting of your website. Whilst he did not ask to close I can see from the details that the intention was to transfer the hosting to another provider at that time.

I do feel the support team should have picked this up and that they should have provided the information of what was needed to cancel the hosting if that was what was required.

Due to this if you can confirm you are happy for me to delete all files/emails on our servers for xxx . I will close the account and waive the payment that has become due.

I have also sent this by post, in case you do not check the account for a reply.

Kind Regards

“ratty antics ”

I had a bulk account with Streamline in 2008 and stopped using them after a couple of years. Then recently they have been sending me emails claiming that I owe them money, even though I haven't been using their service for many years? This is a case for trading standards?

“Good price, awful technical support”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gwynn on 25/04/2013

They are very good at taking payments and setting you up but if you have a problem their technical support is very poor. They do not read your support ticket fully and miss out several of the questions that you ask. There has been a problem with my website, so they just turned if off. Didn't contact me first. Just turned the entire website off. When I have contacted them they were not able to give a full answer and several times they said everything was fine, but then later still turned it off. I am moving all of my websites from Streamline.net to Hostpapa. Whos technical staff are excellent.

“Passwords stored in plain text!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/04/2013

I have been a customer of Streamline's for about 6 years and apart from my website seeming slow (which isn't good) I didn't have huge problems. I found out recently that they are storing their customers passwords plain text! This is obviously not something that you would expect of a professional organisation. I am currently in the process of moving my business elsewhere, not a happy customer.

“Horrible experience just horrible”

★☆☆☆☆

written by tikatab on 28/03/2013

I was a loyal customer of theirs for years, I no longer wanted to continue services but missed in the small print if I didn't cancel before a certain date that they charge you for a full two years(nearly £100). They threatened to arrest me and destroy my credit rating if I did not pay. I feel incredibly angry and exploited at being forced to continue payment for a domain I didn't want. Check the small print then use someone else, anyone else

“I would not recommend StreamLine to an enemy.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 14/03/2013

I have had people try to spam me online - with Streamline they mug you. They have a ``small print `` clause - if at the end of your paid hosting you do not advise them that you no longer wish to continue with their domain service within approx two weeks they actually demand a full two years payment as a penalty, and as others have said they chase you with CCI Legal. Stay away from this company they are very bad news.

The exact same thing has just happened to me. Threatning to arrest me unless I pay for services I do not want which came to a total of just under £100

Disgusting behaviour for any company

“So, SO bad for customer service. We had a club website...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/03/2013

So, SO bad for customer service. We had a club website and the web guy left and 6 years later the account ran out. We received a letter saying money was overdrawn on the account so we went to pay it off and renew the subscription but because we didn't have the details we couldn't. Spent 6 months calling them trying to sort it out but we never could actually pay it off because they were being ridiculously stubborn after we gave ample proof that it was our account, through the university. So then they send DEBT COLLECTORS to get the owed money despite the fact that they REFUSED to allow us to repay it!!!!! NEVER use this company. They will screw you over just because they can.

“Nothing but trouble and poor service. When I failed to...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/02/2013

Nothing but trouble and poor service. When I failed to renew a domain name they sent legal letters. Now they deny that I own the websites that they host for me and refuse to give me access - despite the fact that the sites are still live and still contain my content. NEVER NEVER GO NEAR THEM is my advice.

“Customer service is not a word they know”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JamesM1 on 12/02/2013

We have a bi-annual renewal with Streamline and have done for 8 years now I think, maybe longer actually! However I left the last company I worked for and never thought about changing the email address on Streamline for the domains that were registered with them for billing.... The credit card date expired that they had on file, however rather than contact us either through the email address on the registered domain hosted with them or the postal address they had they simply handed our details to a debt recovery agency, nice touch for long standing customers they could not be bothered to contact us! The bill was paid immediately with the updated credit card added to their system, however even though we are paying in advance for a service until June 2014 we still have no access to our email or web settings and apparently have to ask for this even though we are in credit for another 16 months yet! I would move but a hate the thought of such a low life company having money for nothing but I have added a calendar entry in my Outlook to make sure I move when the contract is up!

“STAY AWAY. THEY WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/02/2013

Same issues as other people. Opened an account 5 years ago for a temporary site for our wedding. We thought we closed everything (indeed we no longer own said site) and after 5 years of having absolutely no communication from them they have passed on our details to CCIlegal with a £74.95 bill. I have other domain names with other providers and have never had any thing even close to this sort of appalling "service". STAY WELL AWAY. After reading other similar reviews, I think this is more than just an error - these people need to be reported.

“DO NOT USE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by disgruntledexuser on 02/02/2013

DO NOT USE, THEY ARE FRAUDSTERS. Cancelled the hosting, moved the domain, all seemed well having used them for four years, then six months later received letters from CCI demanding money. It would appear they have been trying to debit an old credit card under some continuous payment authority that I was not even aware of. I narrowly escaped having my money plundered. No correspondence and scant information except when chasing you for money you do not even owe. The following was printed in the guardian 14/12/12, note the part about online fraudsters, it may help others being sent threat letters . The Office of Fair Trading has warned companies that use continuous payment authorities (CPAs) to automatically renew contracts that they need to start treating customers more equitably or face a crackdown on the issue. Following years of complaints from consumers who have found gym, roadside recovery or other contracts automatically renewed without their permission or knowledge, the OFT says it has "fired a warning shot across the bows" of organisations using these automatic renewal payments that they need to stop abusing the system. CPAs allow a business to take a series of payments using a customer's debit card or credit card without having to seek express authorisation. They are mostly used to collect renewal payments for insurance policies, gym memberships, online dating, mobile and broadband services and magazine subscriptions. The OFT says firms will no longer be able to automatically sign customers up to a CPA unless they have been made aware of what they are agreeing to and that their cancellation rights have been explained. To this end, the OFT has contacted 24 businesses to "help ensure their websites comply with the principles". The AA has been one the major users of CPAs. Customers would buy annual breakdown recovery, but find that unbeknownst to them it was automatically renewed at the end of the year, whether they had agreed to it or not. The AA has generally refunded customers who complained, but others have been less forthcoming. Continuous payments have also become a favourite of online fraudsters because, unlike direct debits, they are notoriously difficult to stop. Several banks and card providers have erroneously told customers that only the company collecting the money can stop a CPA. The Financial Ombudsman Service put out a note this week making it clear that banks can and should stop the if requested by their customer. Jason Freeman, of the OFT's goods and consumer group, says: "Continuous payment authorities, used properly, provide convenience for consumers and clarity about their commitments. However, businesses must make clear to customers what they're signing up for, when payments will be taken and how they can cancel. Where they do not, businesses face the risk of enforcement action."

“Unprofessional messy service!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/01/2013

I moved all of my hosting away from Streamline a year ago when they tried to increase the cost by 50% which made no sense! Having been with them for a number of years I felt utterly kicked. I now have a number of domain names parked with them, I have asked that they don't renew specific domains for 2 years running but they have completely ignored my cancellation requests and continued to take money long before the renewal date. I am now in the process of closing my account all together as they are constantly letting me down - my advise, avoid them!

“Great hosting for a bargain price”

★★★★☆

written by Atlantis66 on 21/01/2013

I have used Streamline.net since January 2007, renewing every 2 years. I was considering moving away, as I was using their Linux server, and I wanted a Windows host with ASP.NET, but wasn't willing to pay the extra £199 per year for this service. I didn't realise that their PRO package, £138 for 2 years, includes not only MySQL databases, but MSSQL and ASP.NET. Needless to say, I have switched to the PRO package. I looked around for other hosts, but couldn't find this service for a better price. Regarding their customer service, I have raised 10 support tickets since 2007, and have had them all promptly and professional resolved. I don't recall ever having to call customer services, so I can't comment on this service. I have had no issues with their billing methods.

“No consideration for loyal customers”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/01/2013

they will force you to pay for a service package you do not use and demand money via the aid of debt collectors. If you do not cancel your subscription within 30days of expiry of your current package they will automatically rob you and demand money for a package you do not need. Rubbish customer service and rubbish service. I will pay them the money to avoid the scums trying to effect my credit file and then cancel. I am sure they will be so rich with the money they have demanded. Avoid this service provider !!

“Oh dear.... Very poor customer relationship”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/01/2013

It's ok when everything is fine, but as soon as you have a problem there is nothing in terms of customer support or flexibility. I have nearly 30 accounts with Streamline and will slowly migrate every one of them away. Avoid dealing with this company as you get tied in to ridiculous terms and conditions which are very difficult to get out of. Reliability is fine, but no customer service which means you cannot work with them as a business.

“There are many better companies out there”

★☆☆☆☆

written by omarasaurus_rex on 03/01/2013

As a customer, I had a very poor experience with Streamline.net. I find all customer communications from Streamline.net very poor. For example Streamline.net's website and 'Dashboard' interface is very unintuitive. This made the thought of managing my account and services a real chore and a very poor user experience. Additionally, I found e-mail notifications from Streamline.net very difficult to understand. The language Streamline.net used never attempted to clearly communicate with me (the customer) either; but instead e-mail's from streamline.net were like cryptic messages or riddles left for you to decode. In my time as a streamline.net customer, streamline.net seemed to do very little improve the way they communicate with their customers which I found surprising for a web-based business in 2013 and considering the wonderful things other registrar/hosting services were doing for their customers. Alas that leads me on to my final point; thankfully in my experience, the competition out there is much better than Streamline.net. As you'll see on this site that many other reviewers have added negative comments here, so look around rest assured that you will find a far better company to provide this service elsewhere.
