“Our company has just bought hundreds of these things,...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/12/2010

Our company has just bought hundreds of these things, our Sprinter workhorses are being phased out.

I'm not an owner I just drive them, I can't comment on reliability, too soon and not my department anyway. Same with value for money. So, I'm only commenting as a driver, nothing else, someone who has to sit in these things and do my job.

As for practicality, we have custom built bodies, they seem fine but they are nothing to do with Iveco.

Good points - a nice tight turning circle, thats a definite plus.

Lets start outside. The wing mirror mounted indicators, dont like them as the flashing light is clearly visible in the cab, thats a distraction I dont need thanks. Also dont like the visibility in those mirrors.

The cab doors;, why are the door handles mounted the wrong way round? Look at any other current car or van (other than Citroen) and you will see whats odd about the Daily door handle. In hinges in the same way as the door. All other vehicles now have handles that hinge in the opposite direction or hinge up or out. Why do that, why add that little complication?

Ours have the gearbox with the manual/auto option. But the gear stick is far, far too sensitive, it only takes a mild touch on the gear stick to deselect auto and find you are grinding along in manual, which you only realise when you've gone too far in 2nd. We had essentially the same gearbox set up on some old Sprinters, never a problem like that, because it was configured differently.

The gear changes are clunky, often feels like they are coming in at the wrong point, feels like its over revving in low gear as well sometimes.

The internal doorhandles are in the wrong place, how the hell did that happen? In most other cars/vans I dont have to scrabble around to let myself out, I reach out and the handle is where I implicitly expect it to be. Its a sign of good design. Ivecos's designers are cleverer than that. They have carefully mounted the internal door handle low down under a protruding fairing, you have to actually look for it visually the first time, after that its merely an irritating scrabble around to locate it every time. Obviously the handle should have been mounted higher up in that fairing - but wasnt. Why?

The radios in our model have another bonus stupid feature. For some years every car/van Ive driven has a simple switch for the radio. You press the button once to turn it on, you press the same button again to turn it off. Its not rocket science. Not in our Ivecos though. You have to press it to turn it on but for some mind bogglingly stupid reason, to turn it off you have hold down the button for a few seconds. What the hell is the point of that?

Its difficult to insert the ignition key, again most vehicles are designed so that the key slides into position over whatever the surrounding trim is. Not in the Daily, as with the door handles, you have to fumble around every time or locate it visually.

The 12v sockets, there are two, thats handy. Except they seem to have a problem, sat navs etc dont always plug in properly. I realise that the humble cigartte lighter socket is ground breaking technology, only perfected mere decades ago but even so Iveco could have made a tiny bit more effort.

The window control buttons; helpfully set up so that they work in the opposite direction to nearly all (all?) other vehicles. You keep finding yourself pressing the 'up' button because in a proper vehicle that would be the 'down' button and vice versa.

The hooter, I and other drivers assume there was a malfunction, we naturally assumed that it was located in the steering wheel. What idiots eh! Its much more handily mounted on a stalk on the left of the steering column. More Iveco genius.

Suspension; hard as hell. Feel every bump and jolt in the road, that gets tedious after a while. Also I suspect a higher number of breakages in the payload as a result, cant prove that though.

I note - through personal observation only - that, despite some of the reviews here, I see very few owner operator Daily vans on the road, or belonging to small operators. I suspect that anyone who had to drive one - wouldnt, not if they had a choice. Hence most of them on the road belong to businesses where the people who purchase them are completely isolated from the people who have to drive them.

This is my experience with these new ones exactly. From what you are saying you work at Tesco right? Our store changed all our vans from our semi auto sprinters that were still working faultless at over 200,000 miles but theses Ivecos are failing at 6,000 miles one had a new gearbox just after 3000 miles.

I am an owner/driver of a daily, first had a 2.8 110 bhp - which wasn't bad (old though - 2001!), now I've just bought a 2006 3.0 140 bhp and its hideous! NO suspension, vibrates like hell, what a miserble day I've just had after 10 hours in it, my old one is still sitting outside, so I might just sell this new one, I honestly think my first van - the dreaded LDV was a more comfortable drive than this thing! I don't know whether the vibration is a fault or not, but you feel in lots when sitting at lights etc, such a harsh drive.

Our Company ( and yes I think I work for the same one ) recently replaced our 7 full auto sprinters with 7 of these semi auto Iveco,s. I have to agree with about all in the above review. The cab is badly designed. The seat is not in line with the steering column for a start. When compared to the sprinter there is little as regards oddments trays , door storage compartments etc..The semi auto box is a pain when trying to contol the speed during tight turns . The sprinter auto gave great control at creeping speed, though its a shame the sprinter steering circle was so poor ( probaly the Iveco,s best feature is the excellant steering circle). The driving postion is much more comfortable in the Sprinter and not such a joggly ride.Roadholding in the sprinter is also far superior. Bottom line is Id rather have my scratched , rusting , 200,000 mile + sprinter back than drive my shiny new 2,000 mile + Iveco Daily.

If it is the same company I think you work for too, then we have 7 of them and to be honest, apart from the jumpy gearboxes and unsupported seats, i prefer these to the sprinters, one they smell new lol, and two and tight turning circles on them are un-matched. They seem to be a lot more reliable than the sprinters we had, one of which used are whole budget up on continuous breakdowns. Give it time and you too will grow to love them, i know have :D

written by porta on 10/11/2010

who says sprinters are best...no way....the only issue I have ever had is a garage claiming the overheating was due to a blocked heater matrix (they also fitted a rad cap) which they charged £700 for!!!! Other than that and a fusebox fault, which I fitted myself (a fiat tipo one) for a total of £45 NO faults whatsoever....Ivy will pull to over 70 (its restricted) whether it has no load or 4 ton...it handles better with 2 ton on and when I used it for the festival circuit it was the only van from our field that got out unaided (and that included a synchro a delicca and sprinter 4x4)
so no problems and I would definately recommend...If I could afford the new 4x4 I would go for it!!!!

i got my 35s12 brand new in 2004. Since then have done 432,000 miles on the same engine, gearbox, axle the lot!! had a few problems with it such as drive shaft pinion bearing gave up, and and have gone through 2 inline fuel pumps and starter motors and a few other little things, but for the miles i do it very rarely lets me down. the main issue i have with them are the brakes. useless! the calliper sliders seize . . . . ALOT! easy to fix, but lets the van down. as long as you service it and look after it, it will carry on and on. i will be getting another one.

written by on 30/07/2010

35C18 MWB H2 Heavy Duty Van 2010, Really nice van, fantastic engine but has 1 major flaw- the handeling is attrocious. Van wanders very badly when going past other vans, lories, buses and in anything more than a slight wind and bumpy roads. When towing it can be dangerous and is not a joy to drive. I have other Iveco Dailys (an 07, an 04, and a couple of 55 plates) and these handle fine.

These vans are just plain trash. My 35C15 3.0litre is only 7 months old and has so far had.. new gearbox at 6000 miles, new flywheel and clutch at 12000. New suspension drivers seat, new headling (windscreen was leaking!) New steering rack, new front bushes, new front leaf spring, air con wiring burn out twice, various engine valves replaced, engine management light and EDC warning light on all the time despite numerous attempts to repair, front bumper replaced ~ its the colour coded type and the headlights keep digging into the paintwork, new key set, new fuel tank and sender unit, awaiting paint to dent from when new, side door fixed 4 times, gearbox being to judder again so maybe another new box is due soon.. These vans are a waste of money. Pay the extra 5k and get a sprinter!!

“I bought 3 Iveco Daily twin wheel pickups in 2003/4....”

★★★★☆

written by J Davis on 27/03/2010

I bought 3 Iveco Daily twin wheel pickups in 2003/4. The oldest now at 500,000 miles, the others at 380 and 360,000. All operate delivering to building sites throughout UK, usually towing a 3.5 tonne trailer, and often at GTW which is an unbeatable 7 tonnes. Only one engine replaced, and that because of a mechanics error, it wasn't worn out at 400,000. All needed rear axles around 300-350,000. Gearboxes are still quiet. Annoying engine management issues, but they do not disable the vehicle. 20 to 22 mpg with trailer, 25 solo. They have the 150 bhp 2.8 litre engine. Chassis starting to need derusting, but at least they're a channel not box section. All still drive well. They have been a good buy.

“Purchased 11x dropsides, 4 have been delivered so far....”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 26/02/2010

Purchased 11x dropsides, 4 have been delivered so far. After 333 miles one wouldn't start; another with less than 150 miles showed a warning light saying there was water in the fuel system; another with less than 500 miles now has an engine management light on and EDC light warning. One which has not yet been delivered has had a new fuel pump, egr valve & a gearbox sensor within the bell housing replaced.
The first one sent back has been off the road for over a week due to the fact Iveco Germany insisted on checks being made to ascertain if bio-fuels have been used in the vehicle (finding ways to shift the blame in fact!)
As a new customer of Iveco I'm finding a 75% failure rate ever-so slightly unacceptable - These are brand new out the box!!
Now dreading delivery of the other 7 & don't even want to think about the 18t Eurocargo on order :(
£380,000's worth of aggro me thinks. Be warned.

As a follow up, I have to add. Any faults or problems I have to say are delt with very quick and efficiently. The maximum downtime of any fault so far has been just one hour! The faults have not returned and the vehicles are doing very well. (Phew!)

What is all this twaddle about?. The facts are quite straightforward all of these vehicles are brand new so why all of the warranty claims. It makes me wonder how they will fare at the end of the warranty period of 200,000 Kms. Take a look at Hyundai 5 years unlimited kms and virtually no warranty claims. This is what I expect of a commercial vehicle, not having to return time and again and having to put up with the inconvenience and generally unsatisfactory outcomes from a brand new vehicle.

I AM A HAPPY OWNER WHO WILL GLADLY BUY ANOTHER NEXT TIME ROUND...SOME TIME YET I THINK

I was a little worried about buying this iveco daily truck after reading some of these reviews, as I was buying it used , and I'd heard that spare parts were expensive. However, this vehicle was so reliable that I didn't need to worry about buying spare parts. As of yet I have had no problems with it, and I would thoroughly recommend it, whether new or used.

★★★★☆

written by HMA1 on 19/05/2009

The Iveco Daily is great value for money they handle well and have plenty of pulling power even when fully loaded, economy is decent, thats coming from some one in the motor trade and Van hire business where some of the vans we use are MWB and Extra Long Jumbo Daily's. They are great value for money secondhand as they cost a lot less than a sprinter or VW LT, they are solid reliable workhorses if they have been maintained well, The abused examples will give problems , spares are expensive if you use the main Iveco dealers, however service parts can be aquired for a fraction of the cost from non franchise specialists. For major parts such as engines and gearboxes there are plenty of these on offer from various breakers so its not really a problem as there are hundreds on offer.

Overall the Daily is well worth a look

This Iveco Daily van is a solid workhorse , very durable with bags of pulling power, we operate a van hire company and I would rate the Iveco Daily second to Only the Mercedes Sprinter , but it costs far less than a Sprinter !
Overall Great Value for money , If it does go wrong the spares can be expensive however do bear in mind there are plenty of Daily's out there that are being broken for spares at reasonable prices

I have owned my Iveco Daily 35s12 from new (04), what a fantastic van to drive : its light and responsive with the turning circle of a tractor. However after only 39.000 miles of light local travel , the clutch in on its way out, the engine despipe regulalar oil changes has developed an alarming rattle and the transmission has a bizzare thud. Do i need a hearing aid ? or after 25 years of driving the classic Ford transists can you expect a few more miles from a new van.

written by bmctransport on 22/03/2009

So far, my Iveco Daily van has had two new clutches (she's only done 23000 miles) a new flywheel, now a new gearbox, new leaf springs, new drivers seat, new steering column x 2. The passenger window appears to open when it feels like it.

The van has also been plagued by rattles and noises and ever since she was new in May 08, I think she's has been annoying to drive.

This van has got to be one of the most comfortable vans ever to drive on long distances without fatigue, smooth ride, I have an older model LWB twin rear wheels, very well balanced, very economical. My vehicle is fitted out as Broadcast van full time, drives beautifully.

Love/hate relationship with my Iveco Daily van. when all is well this van is a great driver and makes my job as a courier pretty cruisy. It has good acceleration, comfortable enough interior, decent fuel economy and carries weight up to two tonnes well. It actually drives better [smoother] with a bit of weight on it. BUT the reliability issues of this van drive me absolutely crazy. It seems like every week it develops a new fault to add to the list and when you have no choice but take it to the dealer, be prepared to pay a fortune. Actually, I think I hate this van.

I have been asked to drive a dropside Iveco daily which has a wide body. The external mirrors view is obscured by the body by around half and the rear corners of the vehicle cannot be seen. The local Iveco dealer informs me that there are no extended mirror arms available that will remedy this. I am reluctant to drive this vehicle as there is no clear view to the rear and with it being a long bed, the swing out on corners, without adequate rear vision is an issue. I cannot find any suitable mirrors to alleviate this situation. Can anyone advise?

Morning guys Hi guys has anyone had any problems when with back brakes on an iveco daily? This one is a 2000 year We have replaced new discs on the rear axle and pads but could not get the new pads over the discs with out winding the piston back on its thread right back and then the pads go over the new discs.. But now don’t have good breaks on the rear even after 200miles if we Jack it up run the engine put foot brake down you and still turn the back wheels there’s some resistance but with a bar on the wheel nuts you can still turn the wheel both side with foot brake right down Any thoughts guys? Should we have not turned pistons on the thread all the way in ? Is there a trick to wind them back out when over discs?
