“This review is based on my experiences of shopping in...”

★★★★☆

written by annddolan on 07/12/2004

This review is based on my experiences of shopping in the Asda Supermarket in Swindon, many miles from where I live, but occasionally I like a change from my usual supermarket (waitrose) and so am happy to travel for a different experience. Asda is part of the American Wall mart chain and I have happy memories of browsing the aisles of Wall Mart in Tucson and bagging many bargains, so how does this English alternative shape up? Come with me on a virtual tour to find out!

The car park
***********
First things first. There are usually lots of free spaces even at busy times so parking should not be a problem here. There are parking spaces allocated for those with a disability and parents with children. These spaces are situated near to the entrance and trolley bays to make life easier. I will take this opportunity to complain to all ignorant shoppers who think it is o.k. to park in these spaces when you are not entitled to do so. Please don't do it! It means others will have to struggle more than they have to already. I think Asda could do more to ensure these spaces are left free for those who need them as Waitrose do.

Trolleys
*******
There are always plenty of trolleys available at this store even at busy times. I noticed several different types including ones with baby seats and straps, ones that can accommodate a baby car seat and trolleys for those with disabilities. All trolleys have always looked in good, clean condition.

The entrance
***********
There are several entrances into this branch, which also serve as exits. As you can imagine it can be a bit tricky trying to get into the shop when lots of other shoppers are trying to get out with their loaded trolleys. Once inside the entrance is spacious and well lit.

Inside the store
*************
To your left as you enter is the Asda range of clothing named George at Asda. This is my main reason for coming to Asda as I really rate their clothing. It is inexpensive and well made not to mention stylish. On my most recent visit I bought my 2-year-old son a t-shirt top for £3.50,a pair of jeans for £2.50 and pack of bodysuit vests for £2.50. All items were well-made and great value for money. In addition to the children's range Asda sell clothing for women including maternity range and men's clothing. I bought myself a pair of trainers for £6 that are really comfortable.

Multi media section
****************
To the right and straight-ahead is the multi media section. This is a really extensive section and has not only the latest releases on both dvd and video, but also older films at really low prices. There is also a section selling digital cameras and camcorders in addition to low priced basic cameras. I love browsing in this section too!

Toys and games
*************
This section is immediately in front of the multi media section and is a bit disappointing really. I find the toy range limited at have never found anything very exciting or different. I did buy a monopoly game on my last visit for £11.48, which was about £1 cheaper than Tesco. Asda have their own range of toys but as I have never bought any I can't comment on the quality.

Kitchen equipment and linens
*************************
This is the next aisle and again is extensive. I like the asda kitchen and find the range inexpensive and innovative. On my most recent visit I bought coasters made from slate for £1.50 for 4, a real bargain! The bed linen range is also quite stylish and looks far more expensive than it is. Asda also sell a vast range of cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery all at great prices.

The dairy section
****************
O.k. so now for the food items! The dairy section has all you would expect including organic milk and butter, which pleases me! The prices were inexpensive for all the usual brands of butter. Asda stock a vast range of per packed cheeses so you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Fruit and veg
************
I find this section a bit disappointing. I usually buy my fruit and veg from a local supplier so maybe I have been spoilt here, but I think this Asda could do so much better in this department. The produce on offer always looks, to me, as if it is not too fresh. There is always plenty on offer but perhaps the quality is not as I would like. Prices are however good and the section is well laid out.

Bakery
******
Walk from the fruit and veg section and immediately in front of you will come to the bakery. Asda has a vast range of different breads on offer all baked on the premises. However I buy my bread from a local baker so have never sampled Asdas offerings in this department. There are plenty of cakes on offer too and some did look tempting!

The deli pizza, Chinese and Indian counters.
*******************************
On my last visit I bought an Indian meal from the take away counter. There is a huge amount of choice and it all smells delicious. However we were really disappointed with our meal and I will not be tempted to buy from this counter again! I have never bought from the Chinese or pizza counters so can't comment. The pizza counter does look quite inviting and you can choose your own toppings too.

Beauty, healthcare and baby products
*******************************
All the usual brands on offer at competitive prices. However I find it really confusing to find some toddler clothing with the baby products instead of with the other clothing! Asda sell many own label brands, which I think, are good value compared to the leading brands.

Tinned and packet foods.
*********************
Again all the leading brands in addition to Asdas own label. This aisle is a bit disappointing if you are looking for something a bit different or organic ranges as I could see little on offer here.

Frozen foods
***********
At the far end of the store you will find the frozen food section. There are all the usual items often on promotion. The freezers are always well stocked with all offers available.

Beers wines and spirits.
*******************
I am not really impressed with Asdas wine selection I'm afraid and do not think they have many good deals. There is a lot of choice but I find the prices quite high compared to Tesco or waitrose. I would also like to see more information about the wine displayed on the shelf as in other supermarkets, as this would help me to make a selection.

Fresh meat and fish
*****************
I am not keen on the fresh fish counter, as I have had a bad experience here. A few months ago I bought some fish and it was definitely not as fresh as it should have been! There are several aisles of meat with every cut you could want available. I would like to see more free range and organic meat on offer however.

The verdict
***********
Well how does this store shape up in my opinion? I love the clothing range for starters! The kitchenware and linen department is great too as is the multi media aisle. However I am not to keen on the fresh foods or deli. I think for the size of the store the selection of food on offer is poor and not always of the best quality either.

The layout of this branch leaves a lot to be desired .I fail to understand the thinking behind placing naan bread in 3 different places for example! The staff seem equally confused too. Asda reduce items that are going out of date like other supermarkets with their whoops labels! However there are baskets of whoops items randomly placed all over the store and I could see no pattern to this. Perhaps the staff find the layout as confusing as I do!

So what's the overall verdict? Well Asda certainly are keenly priced on many lines and some lines are of high quality. I love the George range of clothing and this makes the trip worthwhile. The staff are friendly and helpful too, so no complaints there. There are always plenty of checkouts open and I have never had to queue for too long even at busy times. I will continue to shop at this Asda branch on an irregular basis but hope they think the layout!

Very good review but I must have to say the layout in Liverpool Aintree is great but the layout in Huyton is very bad and this review is good.

★★★☆☆

written by fionapage on 03/11/2004

As a student asda was great - spaghetti hoops for 8p - fab! But having left uni I still shopped there out of habit. It is awful - there are always big queues in bournemouth and staff stand around chatting ignoring the queues of customers everywhere. A lot of staff cannot even grasp basic english, which isn't helpful when you can't find a product. Meat is cheaper and better in the butchers, and beauty products are cheaper in superdrug as already mentioned.
Its fine for bargains, but tescos is just as cheap, and a much nicer place to shop with a nicer store, better staff and even better 2-4-1 deals on branded products.

“Asda - Staff would not refund me on a computer game...”

written by theASDAcon on 02/10/2004

Asda - Staff would not refund me on a computer game expansion pack, my reason was it was bought by mistake. I don't own the computer game the expansion is for. They said there is a sign that says we dont give refunds on entertainment items, this sign is tiny, and in the entertainment section, on the sign its says "We give full refunds on goods returned" but under that in print the size of 4 mm says "Apart from entertainment goods". This sign was also blocked by a trolly. And I was also accused of copying this game.
If this place wasn't owned by Walmart then I would have got my money back.
Will never go in an Asda again, unless it becomes British again.

Asda offer basic foods at good prices. Nothing fancy but if you're on a budget, go visit.
Own cheap brands can be terrible (i.e., soups and canned produce mainly), but there is a selection of standards to select from.
Staff are good in my opinion, down to earth, willing to help.

Watch the prices thought. i.e., Olay Body Wash 90p cheaper in Superdrug !! Don't assume everything is good value.

★★★☆☆

written by vherbertsmith on 16/09/2004

I must admit to having mixed views on ASDA. I used to shop there years ago and couldn't wait until I moved to another area that had a store. I have now done that and I had my fisrt ASDA shop last week. On the plus side the prices are excellent and I made a substantial saving on the same shop I would have made in Sainsburys. However I was very disappointed in the actual store. It looked like a cheap shop. Stock was everywhere, the layout was awful and the place looked messy and dirty. I will go back to see if it was a one off as the prices can't be matched.

“At 9.15 a.m. on Saturday 24/4 I visited the Asda shop...”

★★★★☆

written by nanicholi on 12/09/2004

At 9.15 a.m. on Saturday 24/4 I visited the Asda shop in Kilmarnock's Queen's Road Retail Park. At the end of my shopping I wanted to get my Saturday's Glasgow Herald. Alas, I could not because the store had run out.
I looked round. The Guardian, Times, Telegraph, Record, Sun, Star, Express, Mail but no Herald.
National Surveys do not list the Glasgow Herald because - they say- it is a regional paper. I have to live with that.
While I understand that your stores in England, Wales and Ireland may not stock The Herald, this store is in Scotland. Despite what the surveys say, Scotland is a nation and there are two national papers in Scotland: The Glasgow Herald and The Scotsman.
I cannot accept that Asda finds it impossible to stock this item or runs out of copies at 9.15 a.m.
Naturally, I returned all my shopping on the day and have tried not to use Asda again.
It was not to be. Safeways changed to Morrison's and my shopping habits had to change along with it.
I thought I would give your store another chance.
On 18-8 I went to the same Queen's Road Retail Park store. My brother in law, who lives in Spain, is a cheese retailer and I thought it would be nice to take to him some real Scottish cheeses as he is familiar with mainline cheeses. I am very partial to continental salamis and cold meats and the whole family loves rolls as well as Mathew's Thin Sliced Turkey Ham. A fair mix of shopping wouldn't you say?
I understand the need of bulk shelves and quantity sales marketing. I understand product positioning but I also understand what delicatessen should be and a deli counter "it isn't".
Your offering of cold meats is pitiful in its variety with 1 Spanish Chorizo, 1 German Peppered Salami, Italian Salami and 1 Prociutto, 1 French espece de saucisson, 1 Polish Wajleska and 3 tubs of Pat . There is not denying that the variety of British cold meats was fair.
On the cheese front, the deli area has a fairish variety of continental cheeses and a little British based on the cheddar range. On the main cheese shelves, cheddar jumps at you from every shelf. There are 2 otherwise Scottish cheeses: Arran and Orkney. Not even a blue in sight or on site.
There was no Turkey Ham available.
I was not disgruntled when I went for the rolls. I bought 2 dozen. I was not pleased, however, when I arrived home and found that what had been displayed as rolls were a hybrid between a bap and a roll.
By the time I left, empty handed as far as my intentional shopping was concerned, I was very disappointed. I approached the customer service counter and asked if they had any customer feed-back form. I was informed that there were only complains forms.
I supposed it will be back to Aldi's. At least they do not purport to be more than they are and, have you tried their Prosciutto?

“Where do I start?!Asda used to be my favourite store...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by eastleigh on 30/07/2004

Where do I start?!Asda used to be my favourite store for quality, choice, price and customer service. NO MORE.
Ever since WALMART took over, the store has gone from bad to worse. I used to use a local hypermarket, so the choice was available, no longer the case. Asda used to offer their own branded products on a wide range of products, and they used to be excellent value for money, their own brand has been reduced drastically, resulting in higher priced branded products.

Asda loves to keep moving there stock around in their stores, from a marketing point of view, I can understand this. Customers may, and I say may, notice more products in looking for their normal items. However, in reality, I think it completely annoys shoppers when they do this, and sometimes, not even shop staff have a clue where the items have been moved to.

The levels of stock held used to be good, now they are constantly out of stock.

I hope that Walmart are given a lesson in the UK that what might be acceptable in the USA is NOT acceptable here, all credit to other shops such as Tescos, Sainsbury's etc who have not pandered to Walmart's marketing ploy.

“Asda is great for cheap food and lots of variety....”

★★★★★

written by ATLANTIS on 27/07/2004

Asda is great for cheap food and lots of variety. Their prices are rarely beaten on own brand and famous brand lines. The shelves are always well stocked and staff are helpful if you need to find something.
Of course they are big busy places and fitting your trolly down the aisles with the countless other shoppers can be hard but with increased opening times in many stores now it's easy to find a quieter shopping time.
Own brand products are just as good as the famous names and many are wonderfully cheap. Fresh fruit and produce is always of a good standard and reasonably priced to. They also offer an impressive bakery, pizza and deli range of fresh products. In addition to food products they have a wide selection of tolitries, homeware and the wonderful George Clothing range.
All in all Asda offers a great shopping experience.

★★★☆☆

written by Cherrypip on 17/07/2004

Well it's not really Asda fault that their customers are a bit rough. However, if there was more room to move around it would not be quite such a 'sweaty' experience with long long queues at the checkout - always. That must reflect on the prices generally. One would have thought that as ASDA are now owned by WALMART, they would have tried to give customers something of the American experience. Instead, it is all very dreary and utilitarian.

written by baruya on 01/06/2004

We avoid Asda wherever we can. They sell downmarket rubbish and the shopping experience is quite aggresive and bullish. I'm not loaded, but I choose to go elsewhere because I want my weekly shop to be less stressful, and I prefer to buy my food from a store that employs friendly and helpful staff, and I pay extra for it.

Enough said.

<br>
<br>"They sell downmarket rubbish and the shopping experience is quite aggresive"....

Mrpeace's Response to baruya's Review

I think it seems clear that the problem is your attitude to Asda and not Asda itself. I find the staff extremely friendly and helpful.
<br>
<br>The little differences count a lot, Tesco and Asda staff will always look you in the eye when they talk to you.
<br>
<br>With every supermarket there will always be the occasional one where the managment is poor and this reflects on the staff lower down the chain, perhaps this was the case in the particular Asda you went to. If you avoid Asda at all costs, this suggests your comments cannot be based on the experience of Asda as a whole, but on one or two particular stores.
<br>
<br>I am sorry to disagree, but I really do think Asda deserve more credit than you have given. There own brands is a very good quality, similar to that of Tesc's, Sainsbury's, etc. If you don't like there own brands then go for popular brands, Asda sell them all... are these brands cheap and tacky too? Perhaps you will find what you are looking for in Harrods.

I have a inquiry, I recently purchased the non fat soft cheese Quark costing 50p. This week I purchased it and it cost 96p. The asda was Taylors Lane Parkgate. The product was not on offer before so why the 46p increase?
