I would never ever use or recommend H Samuel again. They did not look after me or respect my rights as a paying customer.

I declined the H. Samuel offer of a further 20% off another ring because of the bad workmanship of having the ring resized in the first place i didnt want to run the risk of having it happen again. So they lost out in the end and i have ended up with going somewhere else. I was disappointed because i did like the style of the ring i chose and unless i pay a designer then i wont get the same again as this was a stock not to be replaced.

A very expensive watch was bought for me from H Samuel, and I took it back to have a link removed.
The assistant was unfriendly, and I had to take it to the shop next door as he did not have time to shorten the strap.

Poor customer and watch repair service.
Make sure you have evidence about the state of your watch before you hand it in for repair.

Knowing of the above incident I will not shop at H.Samuel again, not so much because of the stone falling out of the ring (this in itself is not acceptable), but the way the young lady was treated in the shop with no thought to the fact that a very special time in her life had been marred. It would appear that the insurance is not worth the paper it is written on!

“H. Samuel are unwilling to exchange or refund a gold...”

written by marieford on 10/04/2007

H. Samuel are unwilling to exchange or refund a gold bangle which the clasp keeps coming undone, and has fallen of 5 times in 4 days. It is obviously a design fault, but the shop manager is unwilling to compromise.
He said that H Samuels had sold 1200 of these bracelets, and only 47 had been returned, this is a low percentage apparently, and does not signify that the is a problem with the product.
I told him that it was not fit for the purpose for which it was bought, his reply was " you are using legal jargon ", I said that I know my consumer rights. The manager felt that it was fit for the purpose for which it was bought, because the clasp works, but to me that the clasp opens when I don't want it to so it is in fact faulty.
The manger has offered to send the bangle to one of their workshops and have a safety chain fitted to it ,but at my expense. He was not willing to waiver the charge.
47 people have successfully returned their bangles. Why not me?
I am not happy with H. Samuel at all and would not recommend.

I bought a white gold bracelet for my partner as a birthday present. She wore it once and it broke.

We returned to the shop and H. Samuel replaced it. By the time we got the bracelet back home the item had broken in the box. The third replacement turned yellow within a month. It now sits in the original box.

White gold doesn't go yellow unless you keep it in poor conditions.

You can clean it, or send it away to be re rodium plated. The yellow is the gold it's actually made of!! White gold is actually yellow, and plated with rosium for shine.

Also, wearing perfume can cause problems!

“My (now) husband bought my engagement ring from H...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by Bramble789 on 11/07/2006

My (now) husband bought my engagement ring from H Samuel just over two years ago. I haven't knocked the ring hard or anything but already the clasp has shifted so the diamond is loose.
I took it back to the shop, and they sent it off to check if it was a manufacturing fault and to fix it. However they said it wasn't a manufacturing fault and they didn't fix it, just sent it back and said it would be £25 to fix.

I took the ring to an independent jeweller who said the clasp had been made with poor materials, and said any tiny knock from housework, or anything, would dislodge the clasp and the stone would become loose. He said I'd probably have to get it mended every six months to two years for the rest of my life.

Store staff in H Samuel were incredibly unhelpful and rude when I explained my disappointment. You expect an engagement ring to last you for a long time, through some wear and tear, and this independent jeweller said most do if the clasps are made properly, out of platinum.
The jeweller also said he would charge me £10 to fix the ring - less than half the amount H Samuel said.

So the moral of the story is, don't, whatever you do, ever buy an engagement ring from H Samuel - it won't last as they're not very well made.
Tell your friends and anyone you know - I'm going to be worried about wearing my engagement ring for the rest of my life in case the stone falls out because of the shoddy materials the clasp is made from.

written by rhayton on 08/06/2006

I took a watch to H. Samuel to have a new battery inserted. When we returned to collect it they said they had been unable to do the work and handed the watch back in a plastic bag, and said there would be no charge. On removing the watch from the bag we discovered they had broken the bracelet. They asked us to prove it, which we could have done by reviewing their CCTV, but they declined to do this. They have offered no apology, and despite writing to the head office, they have made no further contact with us.

written by roadie669 on 21/02/2006

I bought my wifes wedding ring out of H Samuel in Irvine, Ayrshire at a cost of £100. It initially took them 4 attempts to get the correct ring in, we finally got the ring a month after paying for it. Within 5 months one of the diamonds fell out and we took it back to get repaired. 2 months later 3 of the diamonds fell out and we took it back and the supervisor wouldn't offer a suitable solution to the problem.

There is always the problem that diamonds may fall out, as a result of accidental damage. Therefore, it was good that the store tried to resolve this, by fixing the ring, however, it is unfair to expect the company to keep on replacing the diamonds due to this.

written by alisonthomson on 23/11/2005

My husband bought me an Eternity ring from H. Samuel, which split. I had to get it replaced with reluctance from the store. I took the same eternity ring to be resized I was told when to pick it up. When I went it was not there after going back and forth for a couple of weeks finally got my ring back, after a couple of weeks it started to split again. I was given a date to pick the ring up I left it a few days with past experience but when I went to pick it up it was not there again they phoned to see where it was and they had not sent it. When I asked why they hadn't phoned to see where it was when it did not come back to store on they day it should the answer is I forgot it's their fault not ours!!!!!

This is strange - gold is malleable, but doesn't split, unless accidentally damaged.

Yes gold is malleable but only in the higher carats. 9,14 ct can be brittle. At this carat and presume price, a ring would be cast rather than worked by hand and annealed. 22ct is not as soft as is often portrayed either-more to do with the trade been able to attract more customers who can afford only lower carat gold......go ask any Asian!

I recently bought a ring from H Samuel and opted to pay the little extra for the insurance. After I got it stuck on a door handle and bent the shank, I took it to be straightened. After 5 weeks of going back and forth I received it back and it's still bent. Staff were useless and never phoned back when they said they would do.

Very nice jewellery at H. Samuel displayed clearly in spacious cabinets so that you can see.

Staff are always helpful, I bought a ring as a present for someone which was the wrong size and when I took it back they arranged straight away to have it adjusted at no extra cost, and it only took a week.

The shop is expensive though- I bought a silver heart charm bracelet for £40 only to find that Argos had exactly the same one for £20!!

written by tofmmaz on 15/09/2004

Took my engagement ring in to be sized at H. Samuel and was told it would take a week. 1st they got the wroung size. 2nd they wiped out the hallmark and the shank was very poorly done with bumps in it. 3rd ring came back with a new shank and hallmark but you could see the joins where new shank had been put on and dirty brown mark where new hallmark was put on and the ring was returned very dirty.
This took them 5 weeks to muck up my engagement ring

The store tried to rectify the problem - it seems ridiculous to rate other aspects negatively, bearing no relation to the problem.

I had a pair of white gold earrings given to me as a gift in November 2013. Only worn them a few times and they have broken. On the Samuel's website I found them still for sale and looked at reviews of the item and they had also broken in the same place but when visiting the shop they would not do anything as I had no receipt. So I wrote to their customer services and told them the problem and that someone else had the same problem. I also attached photos of the broken earring but they gave me the same reply nothing they could do without a receipt, which I do not have. The earring is clearly not fit for purpose as it has happened to someone else and I think white gold should last longer than 8 months of casual use. What do you think please and what should be my next move?

Thanks for answering this question.
