I'd agree with the previous reviewer. The place was rather pretentious and they made it quite obvious that they didn't/couldn't make a bespoke dress for me. I have ended up going to another designer in Knightsbridge who has drawn a sketch and is now going to be making my dress. Shame on you Johanna Hehir.

I had been excited about trying on Johanna Hehir dresses but was utterly disapointed by the showroom. It was a pretentious atmosphere, the staff clearly couldnt be bothered and at a size 12 every dress was too small. I would recommend that if you have your heart set on a Johanna Hehir dress find another stockist that actually wants your business...

I don't usually write online reviews, but I noticed that JH has had a couple of bad ones on this site, and so I feel obliged to give my account. I had a very clear idea of the type of dress I wanted, something with a slim silhouette and with sleeves, no veil. I had been to 7/8shops in Glasgow, Oxford, and London, and had very little success. In general, no suitable dresses (suggestions included buying a strapless one and having sleeves stitched on), and while most of the assistants were helpful, I had one abysmal experience in a Glasgow shop with a profoundly uninterested and unhelpful assistant. So by the time I came to Johanna Hehir, I had tried on a number of different styles and had had varied experiences. I had a fantastic time in this store. I came with some ideas of what I wanted to try on, based on the pics on the website, and Caroline (brilliant all the way) pulled out some more dresses of similar styles. In fact, the dress I ended up buying was one which she selected, and which I had written off when I saw it on the website. As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one. I found the whole experience to be excellent. At no point did I feel that I was being pushed into choosing or buying; I was never rushed; alterations were made, and the dress was re-pressed twice at my request, without any problem at all. In the end I went for the made-to-measure service which worked very well for me, this was absolutely not forced upon me and the people in the shop emphasised that I didn't *have* to go down this route. It is a shame that some brides appear not to be happy with their experience in this store, and I hope that this doesn't put off any potential shoppers. The dresses are beautiful, and the staff are very helpful. Caroline in particular is lovely, and I would really recommend the store to anyone looking for a non-meringue, classic dress.

Johanna Hehir has beautiful and unique dresses that I found refreshingly different from the usual bridal selection. They also have plenty of dresses with straps, essential for me and somewhat difficult to find in any number at some other bridal salons. They staff had a good sense of what would suit me - they put me in a dress I wouldn't have picked off the rack, and it ended up being the one I ordered. I think they are reasonably priced for made to measure dresses, and they were very flexible with me - they managed to finish my dress in time and without any fuss even though I had to bring forward my deadline considerably due to an unexpected move abroad. Highly recommended.

I bought my wedding dress from Johanna Hehir and had my wedding recently. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the shop and my appointments were never rushed, despite my inability to make decisions on what type of dress, accesorise etc

The overall fit and length of the dress was perfect. It was almost perfect on the 3rd fitting but not quite...so I thankfully had a 4th and then it felt amazing.

You can change the look of the dress to suit you which I really appreciated.

Caroline was brilliant, really funny and chatty which made things fun.

My dress cost £2100 with a £300 veil. I really wanted to have imbuilt support so as to not need a bra, but sadly in this price budget Johanna Hehir don't do this. I'm not sure if other dress makers do. However, on the day, it really didn't matter! I felt wonderful. Everyone loved the dress and I had a fab time.

This place gets quite mixed reviews. On the plus side - they have some beautiful dresses which won't break the bank. But I do think for a little bit more money you can go to other places where the quality is better. I really really really liked a dress here but decided against it because I felt that I couldn't rely on them to get it right or to make me feel amzing/go out of their way to make the dress perfect etc. On one occassion I had confirmed an appointment and they said I hadn't so had to wait whilst another bride was being fitted - it was clear she was trying to tell the assistant that she wasn't happy with the length but the assistant wouldn't listen and kept ignoring her. In the end I've gone with a designer who I know will listen to what I say (even if they suspect I'm being a bridezilla!).

I decided to go with Johanna Hehir because I could see right away that all their dresses had a certain quality about them. I think that if you have the budget, every bride should go for a made to measure gown. My dress was stunning, the material was beautiful. I particularly like their acute attention to detail and they were a fun team to deal with!

I visited this shop on recommendation from my friend but I wish I hadn't. I was made to feel very rushed throughout my appointment and even though I turned up early I was seen 20mins late. They cut my session though as another client was after me. Luckily I had another appointment booked in Knightsbridge with Emma Victoria Payne and the prices were much more reasonable and it was the designer herself who looked after me. I felt that the staff at Johanna Hehir made it very obvious that I should be grateful that I tried on a designer dress.

I visited the store last week and I'm afraid to say that I had an awful time here. I was put into a small changing room at the back which was dark, cold and had no mirror. I had to come out into full view of everyone (including the guys discussing the refurb of the shop) to look in the mirror. I was also told that they 'have no dresses that would fit over your chest'. I left feeling pretty awful. I was not even asked if I would like to look through the dresses and had to sit with the look books. Having said that, my cousin got her dress from there and loved it. One to try if you are on the thinner side (I am a standard 14 and had trouble), and if you're the only one in there at the time.

Visited in August with the mindset of "just looking", but found the Dress with a capital D, and couldn't resist bringing it home with me! (All the way to Norway!) Service was excellent - me and my friends were very good taken care of, they were all involved in the process, which was a comfort to me. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. I highly recommend Johanna Hehir to all brides to be!

I started out very unsure about what I wanted and picking out very understated dresses as I couldn't see myself as a bride, but with Paul's help I managed to start looking in the mirror, seeing myself in the role and found I liked a much fuller, more traditional wedding dress than I expected. He helped me see what would suit my body shape and consider what I would be trying to do in the dress, e.g. dancing, sitting, etc. It was a great experience going for a first look at wedding dresses at Joanna Hehir, and made me feel really comfortable, special and get into wedding mood. Great care was taken over the dresses (which were a great selection and all beautifully made) and my modesty (which, had I been more embarrassed about having a male designer attend to me, would have been appreciated). Thank you.

I loved every moment I spent in the shop. My dress was just beautifully made and fitted with so much care. Caroline and Paul made me feel really comfortable and I didn't doubt for one moment that I wouldn't adore the finished dress. The fact that it is a family run business makes it even more special! My wedding day was just so happy, it is such a shame you can only ever wear the dress once!

Hunted high and low for my dress but all would have been much less epic if I'd visited Johanna Heir earlier on in my search. They have a great range of dresses and offer a really friendly and flexible service - I chose 'Francesca' but was able to customise it by removing the sleeves and lowering the back. All the fittings were really professionally handled and quick and I was really pleased with the result. The dress fitted perfectly and is really good quality - it must be to have survived a ceilidh!

I'd recommend visiting even just for Paul's cheeky comments!

I had a fabulous experience at Johanna Hehir and was made to feel extremely welcome. It was my first day of trying on dresses so was a little nervous but the team made me feel completely comfortable. After looking through hard backs books showing all their dresses I picked out a (considerable) number which I liked to try on. I was specifically looking for a sample dress, as unfortunately a full price one is a little above what I wanted to spend. They had a great range of samples and were careful not to show me anything above my specified budget which I really appreciated. Over all a really great experience for me (and my entourage!). In addition I would strongly recommend Fianna - the lovely lady who looked after me.

I was very nervous on Saturday morning but was instantly made to feel relaxed by the very kind and patient Caroline and the whole experience was a joy. My maids and I had the small boutique to ourselves, and I was made to feel increasingly confident and adventurous throughout the appointment. Anybody who wants a larger selection of dresses can expect that from a multiple retailer, but not a single-designer boutique. And people who feel awkward about being clear about their budget need to consider the position of the staff - it is an awkward but essential part of the wedding dress shopping experience! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Johanna Hehir, particularly to those like me who want to find something a little more refined and original than the standard wedding dress fare, and want to do so in a friendly but beautiful and exclusive-feeling environment. And ask for Caroline! PS the accessories alone are worth a trip.

Very helpful down to earth friendly staff where nothing was too much trouble re giving ideas for slight changes etc. The white gloves were grubbier than my own clean hands which made me chuckle a bit! The dresses are expensive but very beautiful and different to your average shiny big dress that you see in so many shops.

Terrible service. Visited on Saturday and it was the worst experience I've had to date dress shopping. Rude and inattentive staff. Limited range of dresses. Would NOT recommend it to anyone else.

“Have to say after reading through some of these...”

★★★★★

written by on 20/09/2010

Have to say after reading through some of these reviews this morning I have had a very good experience at Johanna Hehir. I ordered my dress on Saturday! Fingers crossed it will all go well (I will let you know!)

My impression is that they are a very friendly bridal shop - and believe me I've been to many over the past few months! I think it only makes sense that they ask you your budget before you start trying dresses on - and this is commom practise at the higher end bridal boutiques. There is no point trying on a dress that costs 5k if you only have a budget of 2k! What if you fall in love with it?! :) (plus it wastes everyone's time)

The two times i've been to the shop so far (both Saturdays) I didn't have to share space with other brides trying on dresses, and I felt they dedicated their time to sorting me out. I thought that both Paul and the friendly lady (i forget her name) were both excellent and really tried to think about what they had in stock versus my requirements.

After trying on dresses at other places, Johanna Hehir seems to me to be mid-range on price, and good value for money because you can actually have a made to measure dress for a reasonable amount of money, and made in the UK. No dresses made in China and altered to fit like some other more expensive dress shops. Also because it's made over here they are flexible with changes - for two similar dresses I'm having the bodice of one and the skirt of the other & can have it with a longer train and additional buttons etc. I felt Paul was very flexible with what they could put together. Try asking that at Browns brides!!

I also like that they ask you to take your shoes off and ask you to wear gloves when trying on the dresses - I went to Vera Wang and some of the dresses I tried on you couldn't see what the original colour was given so many peoples dirty finger prints! It shows they take pride in their dresses.

So... so far so good - will let you know what the finished product turns out like!!

“We have had a number of negative reviews recently...”

★★★★★

written by Paul002 on 19/09/2010

We have had a number of negative reviews recently which give the impression that Johanna Hehir does not care about customer service and is very money orientated. In our defence, we have been designing, manufacturing and retailing wedding dresses and eveningwear for the past twenty years and as the hundreds of positive reviews we continue to receive each year show, the vast majority of our brides, are more than satisfied with the quality of their dresses and the service they have received from Johanna Hehir.

Regrettably there will always be a small minority of brides who for a number of reasons (as outlined below) feel that they have not been treated well or had the "bridal experience" they expected.

Some brides have complained about our appointments policy. At Johanna Hehir, we have a much more comprehensive range of styles than the average bridal boutique and our reputation for styling advice is such that we have a waiting list, particularly for Saturday appointments. For this reason we also have a 48hr cancellation policy for bridal appointments. This is to deter brides from failing to show for their appointments, thereby depriving other brides of the booking, which is only fair given that we are allocating a trained stylist and an hour of company time for free.

We appreciate that when brides first come to try on dresses that they do not always know what they want, but we always do our best to try and advise them within the allocated time. Some brides who have booked Saturday appointments to try on dresses have complained about "feeling rushed" but if we cannot meet the bride's requirements or the allocated time is up, we need to finish the appointment or the next bride will complain that she is being kept waiting.

Others have complained that we are "money orientated". We have detailed information about our price range and services on our website at www.johanna-hehir.co.uk We do not want to waste brides time by showing them gowns outside their budgets, so before the appointment, (and amongst other questions) we ask the bride "what price she is not comfortable spending over?" which is not an unreasonable question.

We have dresses from £500 to £5000 and it is obviously in our interests to try to find a style that flatters the bride and is within her budget. However this is not always possible, particularly if the bride is being less than honest with us, about what she is prepared to spend on her dress.

There is no obligation on the bride to purchase a gown from Johanna Hehir, but the stylists at Johanna Hehir feel it is only fair that they are given sufficient information to be able to advise the bride in a professional manner. If it was all about the money, we would not be offering free appointments, as it costs Johanna Hehir for every bride we see. Unfortunately, a few brides fail to appreciate our appointments policy and have accused us of being "snobby" on the internet.

We have also had a few brides complaining about their dresses and the service they have received when ordering made to measure dresses. We make it very clear when the bride first orders her dress and it is stated clearly on her order (and on our website) that the made to measure price includes three fittings. We also advise brides that if they intend to lose weight that they should achieve this by their second fitting to avoid additional cost and extra fittings. Weight loss or gain after the 2nd fitting, somewhat defeats the whole point of made to measure and can involve remaking the dress, which is not a simple or quick process.

But we appreciate that this is sometimes unavoidable and unintentional on the part of the bride, particularly if she becomes quite stressed leading up to the wedding. We are always prepared to do the extra work and schedule additional fittings to get the dress to fit correctly, however the bride must accept that the extra work has to be costed separately and is in addition to the original made to measure price. Most brides accept responsibility for their weight loss/gain and are prepared to pay the extra to have the dress fitting correctly, but regrettably there will always be a minority of brides who strongly object to any question of weight loss/gain and expect all extra work to be included at the original price.

We recently had a bride who complained about her dress not being finished and ready to collect at her third fitting, even though this was scheduled several weeks before her wedding. Where possible we try to have the dress finished for the 3rd fitting but we can never guarantee that it will be ready to collect at the 3rd fitting, as there are often minor finishing details and final adjustments (like hooking up trains) and hand finishing which may need to be completed before collection.

Occasionally we have brides who confuse made to measure with bespoke (also explained on our website) and mistakenly believe that they have the right to demand design changes or additional work (which is over and above the specification agreed at the time of ordering), included in the original price.

We always try to accommodate the bride's demands where possible. But once again it is unfair to expect us to cover the additional work and fittings in the original price. We do not like having to charge brides extra and more often than not we will bear most of the cost ourselves provided the bride is prepared to be reasonable with us. But brides who imagine that they can deny or bully us into submission are mistaken. Adopting an aggressive and demanding attitude with the people who have designed and are manufacturing your wedding dress, is not a good strategy to win them over.
