“I have a personal and a business account with Alliance...”

I have a personal and a business account with Alliance & Leicester. It was a nightmare to set them up because they lost and then found one of my applications. Then they opened duplicate accounts. They failed absolutely to switch direct debits which has cost me £85 so far in bank charges. I had to do it all myself after 3 months had passed. They make ridiculous mistakes and don't alert you for a week so you can make alternative arrangements. No apologies. They don't even know the details of the products they sell so they end up mis-selling them to you. Their internet banking services are so old and difficult to use it's like walking into a time warp. They do not answer phone calls or return them, then when you write to complain, they take 2 mths to reply with a pack of lies. I am now closing both my accounts and involving the Financial Ombudsman for compensation to cover the charges I've had to pay on their behalf. My advice is to steer well clear of this company because of unlimited incompetence and the fact that you simply cannot trust them with your money.

Wow, the self same thing happened to me when starting my business account. My wife and I drove seperately to 2 different branches to get our ID certified, then she took the paperwork into the Watford branch. They lost the paperwork, then would not answer the phone for 3 days. When I did get through on 2 occassions they told me they would call me back and didn't. Then I complained to head office, and I only ever spoke to the same woman who again told me she would get back to me and didn't. I gave up with them. Then 4 weeks later, the account opening package came, so they hadn't lost it after all! What a bunch of morons. I wouldn't recommend these people to anyone, they have poor internal management and weak processes. Abbey National, First Direct and Smile have been much much better on all counts. Nationwide are ok so far, but are taking over 48 hours to reply to secure messages sent within their menus. Thats not acceptable. I might try out Cahoot next to see how they perform.
Stay clear of Alliance and Leicester though.

setting up the internet account has been a nightmare, incompetence shown at all stages, HQ takes ages to reply to letters - sometimes they are ignored, the local branch was very unhelpful.

“Do not touch this company with a barge pole! ”

Do not touch this company with a barge pole!
I put up with Alliance and Leicester for over 5 years before deciding that I was tired of being charged £50 without warning everytime I accidently let my account go overdrawn so much as 1p.
Closing it wasn't easy either, I emptied my account as instructed and phoned them up to cancel, a few days later they sent a confirmation form which I sent off straight away. What I hadn't realised was that during this period they charged 87p interest for having an empty account, which quickly became £50.87 in overdraft charges.
Now I have to send another letter to beg for the charges to be lifted. I won't hold my breath though.

I found this review very helpful because...Alliance and liecester is a fraud... i have been charged £250 so far for going £0.85 overdrawn. this bank should be scrapped!!! they dont even have real people you can talk to @ their few branches in london. you have to talk over the phone as their current, premium and savings accounts are run over the phone. my advice for anyone looking to open an account is that this bank should not be on your list of options. try loyds bank or hsbc ..or better off my own bank.... barclays.

“Alliance and Leicester's Internet banking is extremely...”

Alliance and Leicester's Internet banking is extremely important for my business. Their demonstration on their website for this is not working and has not been working for several months- probably because they are ashamed of it!
It is truly awful, for example to view a cheque that you have posted to them you have to scroll down to the nearest date that you think that they have received it, highlight it and then hopefully it wil show up in their clearing table
A&L have agreed that the website is out of date and they are updating this at the beginning of next year but believe me anything would be an improvement

“As the closest Alliance and Leicester branch is 15...”

★★★☆☆

written by Nottinghamlad on 16/07/2004

As the closest Alliance and Leicester branch is 15 miles away from where I both live and work, I was expecting to be almost entirely dependant on the internet banking facility and was hoping it would be as good as my previous bank's was.

However, I found it to be rather slow to respond to clicks/entries, the split-balances on screen to be quite confusing, certain facilities are to be found under odd headings such as paying a bill is under "Move Money" and overall it has taken at least this long (3 months) for me to fully adjust to the service, which, as an IT Professional is quite worrying!

Lack of incorporating "end user perspective" when designing the site and back-end equipment which is either in desperate need of an upgrade or re-configuration seems rather prevalent here.

This is a real shame as A+L are a very friendly bank, offering some of the best interest rates for current accounts in the UK. However, if you rely mainly on conducting your banking online, I'm afraid I'd have to say that until Alliance + Leicester improve this service, it's probably worth giving them a miss to avoid disappointment.

I have to agree with the comments about the very poor attempt at internet banking by A&L. it's pathetic at best.

Signed up for it, used it twice, got fed up with having to call them and wait for 10 mins + for them to answer before being able to do anything basic with it.

Some of the best interest rates? Maybe, but why introduce a 2 tier system and force customers to go through the process of changing their accounts for the privelege. Why not just introduce interest for existing current account holders, or is that too easy?

I have found this web site slow and confusing.also if you need to contact their web help line, it very difficult to get through the complicated phone system, when you get them I feel that they were unhelpful.

Agree with everything said. This is just a pathetic site that needs to be scrapped and completely re-designed, the first question the design team should ask is .... what do our customers really want and how can we satisfy their needs.

I use A&L because of their rates, I just can't believe that they are happy with such a shoddy banking site. Their competitors leave them in the blocks.
