HSBC are appallingly organised, I had to make an appointment to make an appointment - taking me 45 minutes! There is now no front desk so people are wandering in circles aimlessly until someone finds you to add you to a list to speak to someone, this is very time-consuming in a lunch hour.

written by Misslouize on 06/02/2007

I recently had 4 separate incidents of fraud carried out on my bank account. As soon as I spotted the first one, I telephoned the Customer Service line, to which they simply responded that the money was "in-flight" and could not be stopped, and that as soon as it was with the fraudsters they would launch an investigation. I was offered no advice or support, so I gave up and waited to see what would come of it. Then 3 other amounts walked out of my bank account! I again telephoned Customer Service, and this time I was told the same, except that when the money was with the fraudsters, HSBC would write a nice letter to them asking if they had stolen it. I then went on to ask if I could have my account frozen, to which I was told there was no point; so I continued to plead with the advisor, who eventually agreed to freeze it! I had just lost over £1,000, and he didn't see the point in freezing my account.

A long time later the issue was resolved, and I complained via telephone, to which I received excuses; then I complained in writing, to which I received a standard letter advising me that procedures are in place, So I wrote again, this time receiving the same letter, but accompanied by £20. Oh well, just another £1,000 to find and we are sorted.

I have now moved to Barclays bank, where I was shocked at the service we received. It was completely alien to have them running around after me and fitting themselves around me.

I have banked with HSBC for many years. Recently I have had to telephone, this is when I encountered problems. The call centre staff were in India. They could not help me due to language and interpretation difficulties. I accidently went over my balance and was phoned a number of times from India. One who told me what I had in my mini ISA and would I pay the balance from this. I have put in a complaint which is being investigated by HSBC. As a result I have now changed most of my personal finances elswhere. However, I must stress that in my local branch the staff are brilliant.

written by Ollie100 on 08/09/2006

I have been a "customer" for over 30 years - mostly, I'm sorry to say, due to inertia on my part. I am currently researching where to transfer my accounts, and I came across the Review Centre in the process. I have been prompted to change due to the ludicrous situation my son finds himself in courtesy of HSBC.

He applied for a student account online six weeks ago. He received a letter telling him to go to his local branch (10 miles away) to complete the transaction. The staff at the local branch demanded different identification details to those given in the letter. They were adamant, despite being shown the letter from their own company. So another 20 mile round trip had to be made. After a two week wait, my son was told to go back to our local branch to activate the account. This - can you believe it - involved filling in another application form, going back again to take his passport and UCAS letter, and then they sent it off BY POST to be processed!! This morning, I received a call from a polite lady in India telling me that there was a problem with his application and they couldn't process it without resolving it. She had no knowledge of an internet application. He isn't contactable by phone at the moment, and he starts university in two weeks and his tuition loan can't be paid into his account until it is open. Without payment of the loan money, the university won't allow him to start. The complaints handler (a call centre in Scotland this time) couldn't have cared less, and they didn't even apologise for all this worry and hassle. So the only way I can get through to these people is to move my accounts to another bank.

I was happy when I opened the HSBC Bank account as a student. They gave me everything I needed, but now, as a graduate they are extremely poor. I absolutely hate the call centres, but the staff in branches are good. I have opened a new account with another bank who did give me a loan, plus more.

HSBC is a good bank. Really, but I was very disappointed with the notice of closure of accounts. They offer high interest rates in Australia, and quite prompt and good customer service. Unfortunately, I received notice of closure of account 1 day after notice for application of serious saver account was successful. They did not mention the reason in the letter, so I had to call the customer service and wait for them to call back on the next business day.

I started banking with HSBC over a year ago when I moved back to this country from abroad. Amazingly, even though I have a good income, because I had no address history in this country Co-op Bank, Barclays and Halifax wouldn't even offer me a basic bank account. I went to HSBC who immediately gave me a full bank account plus with cheque book, cheque guarantee and 500 overdraft. Since then the service has got even better. I am now a premier customer with a premier credit card and automatic 5000 overdraft, preferential rates on my mortgage and a dedicated premier manager that will even visit me at my home if I wish. The account is the best I have come across so far.

HSBC Bank are unhelpful, and they overcharge. I am constantly being transferred around the world with no history of my enquiry being passed on to anyone else, thus wasting time unnecessarily having to constantly repeat myself.

All in all, poor client servicing. I HAD been with HSBC for 31 years! Thankfully, I am no longer with them.

written by NicStep on 03/05/2006

I have been with HSBC for 4 years or so, as well as my boyfriend. We hold separate accounts but decided to apply for a joint one also when we were living together. They offered us a large overdraft which we didn't necessarily want. Years later we have broken up, and as £1500 is still owed on the joint account, and neither of us have access to pay that amount of money in one go, we have to pay back gradually. Each month we received £100 worth of charges such as overdraft fees etc., despite neither of us using the account. Our payments are making little difference. When finally we were able to speak to someone ('in store' staff said we needed to call. Call centre staff were 300 miles away and no help) they couldn't offer us any help. They said the only way they could help was to provide a managed loan, which means both of us would lose Switch/Maestro cards from our personal accounts/cheque books and credit cards, despite our personal accounts always being in credit?! Surely they should try and help us as customers, and they must experience couples separating all the time. HSBC refused to help or see us as future customers. They tried to push us into debt by raising overdraft fees and loan rates.

you spent the money, you should clear up your own mess and stop trying to blame the bank.

Up until recently I had a student account with the HSBC bank for the last 12 years. I finished being a student 7 years ago. They never offered to change my account. Over the past few months I have spoken to several call centre staff in India that have been as useful as a chocolate teapot, and rude on top of it. My new solo card didn't work, so 3 replacements were sent between head office and branch; 2 got lost and one turned up 3 months later!! I spoke to the branch staff who helped me straight away, changed my card request to switch and told me to complain about the problems I had faced. I did, and head office told me that their call centres were mostly based in the UK!!! Branch staff are worried they will lose their jobs, and staff even bank elsewhere, so what does that tell you about the state of customer service? I have changed to a bank with UK call centres.

I have been with the HSBC bank for nearly 40 years, but am about to change. Every time I have an enquiry I get a call centre on the other side of the world who can't help me, and can't give me the number of anyone who can! I live 30 miles from my nearest branch. I can't phone them and have to put everything in writing to them all the time.

I have applied a Bank account with HSBC online and got an offer within four days. I have been offered full Bank Account with a cheque guarantee debit card and £700 overdraft.

HSBC staff are very approachable and helpful., easy to use internet banking and unlike Barclays and some other banks, no long queues.

written by sharrison on 15/04/2005

I have been with HSBC for 12 years, and problems have recently arisen every time I have to do anything other than deposit money.

I went through a period where I did not have a functional debit card for approx. 3 months. This was due to cards being lost in the post, delivered to the wrong address, having the pin locked due to a fault on the card, having the card cancelled without my authorisation, requests for new pins/ cards being lost and then having £2500 stolen from the account with no feedback given for months about what was happening.
To top off a ridiculous list of errors made by HSBC, the customer service standards have been appauling, and any request (often these requests have literally been me begging them to supply me with a card so that I can access my own money) has needed me to make constant calls, visits to my branch and having to become aggressive until assistance is offered.

HSBC has no method to look after existing customers, and has been horrendously inefficient in every way. It would have been far less stressful for me to have kept my money under my bed; avoid this bank.

I have always had great problems with this bank. When I first joined at the age of 13 I was automatically put onto a student acc, and 7 years on I am still on this despite being in full time employment and having asked them to change this. I have had in total £1500 stolen from my account and every time I report this I am told that they will investigate but nothing is ever done. I was told that before I can have this investigated and the money refunded back to me I need a crime number from the police, but I cannot get one of these as the bank hasn't produced any documentation that a crime has been comitted. This is a very unorganised and very unprofessionaly run company.

I have been with the HSBC Bank for 12 years and I have honestly never had a complaint about service. I have a current account, saving account, mortgage, ISA, and credit card with them and I am very happy with the service I receive from each and every 'arm' of their business.

HSBC also treat everyone as an individual and have always bent over backwards to try to accommodate any special requests or needs I have had.

You may be able to get better rates elsewhere, but I would never risk the service and flexibility HSBC offer to gain a couple of % on interest rates here and there!

I have had 2 mortgages with HSBC. Both have been arranged very easily and represent good value for money over anything more than the couple of years that rate tarts love.

On top of that you then get upgrades to Premier account status and are treated as a proper person by a bank for the first time.

Top marks HSBC.

(PS I work for a competitor who couldn't match the value or service....even if I do enjoy working there!)
