“Does Nestlé read these do you suppose?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Londinium on 25/02/2014

I had Googled to find out where I could buy a box of Black Magic and then read the Reviews. I looked further and this from YorkPress.co.uk of 23 Dec. 2013 "A Nestlé spokesman said that since the takeover, York had remained a global centre for confectionery and Nestlé remained committed to the city. He said the business had invested more than £200 million since 1988, making York’s site one of the world’s largest and most successful confectionery factories." Obviously this meant Nestlé could do what it liked thereafter and it did - Black Magic is apparently made in Czechoslovakia. The next quote comes from a response to one of the Reviewers here from Nestlé : "they replied telling me they had to consider their customers in Europe and felt it was time for a change, thus the inclusion of more praline & truffle-based centres as opposed to the original line up" This is why I don't buy boxes of chocolate any more, filled with pralines or truffles or (worst) ganaches sickly sweet sticky stuff supposedly with different flavours. Apparently there is now a choice of 6 in the Black Magic box - I remember we used to have strawberry cream, caramel, hazelnut, Brazil nut, Montelimar, marzipan, non-creamy fudge, orange, cherry in liqueur, butterscotch, my favourite: toffee mallow and the one that stayed in the box until I married a man whose favourite it was.... coffee cream. Shame on you Nestlé.

“Black Magic? Really?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/01/2014

Not any more. The dark chocolate that gave them the "black" has gone and there is no "magic" in any of the fillings. A good product ruined.

“Disappointing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/01/2014

My sister and I looked forward to opening a box of black magic, remembering all the yummy centres we used to enjoy. What a disappointment! Only six different centres. What happened to montellimar, Turkish delight, whole cherry, butterscotch, coffee cream, whole almond, hazelnut cluster, marzipan.....who knows the secret of the black magic box? Obviously not Nestle!

I agree with you about Black Magic, I like hard centre chocolates, not the squashy ones! I have just found Fortnum and Masons 'hard and nutty' chocolates - a bit pricey, but lovely!!

“Another poor quality product”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/12/2013

All products nowadays are going up in price, down in size and down in quality, we are being conned, Black Magic Chocolates are at the top of the list. We have recently lost our son (during Xmas 2011), Christmas is a very low time for us, so as a special treat I bought my wife a large box of Black Magic, they were always her favourite and she hadn't had any for years, when she opened them she said that there was something wrong they weren't the dark chocolate she expected, she then tasted one, she looked at the box again and said "Are these Black Magic", having confirmed that they were her comment was "They tasted like some cheap budget chocolate". Tesco's were selling at half price, I wouldn't even take them again if they were giving them away.

“Rip Off”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JoJaJo on 26/12/2013

Bought these chocolates for a Christmas present for my wife. I used to buy her a box every year but have not done so for the last 2 years. Absolutely disgusted to find that there was a selection of 6 only, of which 2 were nut based. The others are cheap and boring fillings. These should not be sold under the Black Magic name as they are nothing like the chocolate selection they used to be. The name should be qualified to show that there is a limited selection. Although the chocolate selection is detailed on the back, when you have bought these chocolates for over 40 years, you see the box and the name and buy them, you do not look on the back to see what the box contains. I feel I have been tricked into buying these. The chocolate selection has has been reduced to the cheapest run of the mill rubbish but the product is still priced in the top quality range I will never buy these chocolates again. Look on back of the box before you buy to make sure the limited selection is what you expect.

“Black Magic? Sad disappointment”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 06/09/2013

Every year since I was quite young, my Dad would buy me a box on my birthday and for Christmas as an extra treat, I had a routine in which order I ate them in and saved the liquid cherry until last. About 1993, he again bought me a box as an extra treat and off I went to open them. OMG, the lemon centred one, the butterscotch, the liquid cherry had all gone and what was left was a very poor substitue for my one time favourite chocolates. I wrote to Nestle and stated my disappointment and asked why they hadn't changed the name to Black Moonlight or something else as the chocolates bore no resemblence to the original, tried, tested and popular Black Magic and they replied telling me they had to consider their customers in Europe and felt it was time for a change, thus the inclusion of more praline & truffle-based centres as opposed to the original line up. I stopped my Dad from buying me any more. A friend later bought me a box on my birthday and this time they were just slabs of choclate squares, even worse, so definitely do not ever want another box of these either. Why do companies change what the people want to buy in the name of "progress".

I had not tried Black Magic for years (I am 63) and I have just been given a box. These chocolates bear no resemblance to the lovely chocs of the past. The current box is full of dreadful sweets called Black Magic but they are nothing to do with the real Black Magic Chocolates. Could someone bring these back please please!

I agree! They should change the name, it's very misleading!
I agree and they should no longer be called Black Magic! The Magic has gone!
In September 2006, it was announced that the manufacture of Black Magic was relocating to the Czech Republic with the takeover by Nestle.
Is this why the centres have all changed and the chocolate is ghastly?
Change the name Nestle, as the Magic has gone!

“BlackMagic ruined”

★☆☆☆☆

written by cocoafree on 24/05/2013

Black Magic used to be a favourite with me. I was recently thrilled to receive a box as a present. What a disappointment: hardly any varieties, all squishy centres, cheap greasy chocolate, nasty-tasting centres grossly overloaded with sugar. They were a travesty of the old Black Magic and Nestle should not be allowed to use this name for this unpleasant and overpriced product. Never again!

“None in Australia”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Pattifran on 29/04/2013

I was wondering how come Black Magic is no longer available in Australia. On reading all these comments I'm rather glad I can't get them any more. Why do these companies have to change beautiful things just to make more money which they won't because nobody will buy them particularly at $33 per box???!!!! from Trish Franklin 1/59 Milton Ave., Paradise Point Qld 4216

What has happened to the Black Magic chocolates I used to know - (I remember them coming in a proper box with a real red ribbon) - the chocolate is terrible and the fillings - where are all the nutty and hard centres? Picking through a box used to be sheer delight - now Never Again

“What about the packaging?”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 31/03/2013

I bought some for the loved one this Easter and when opened we were both disappointed at the lack of choice. I fully agree with the remarks of all the previous reviewers regarding the deteriorating quality of these once-great chocolates. I am convinced they are not as dark (less cocoa content?) and all the intersting old centres have been consigned by Nestle to history. Only the flavour lingers on in my taste buds. But what about the packaging? Absolutely dreadful. Where has the red tastle on the erstwhile luxurious 'casket' gone? Shame on Nestle!! When they took over Cadburys fears were expressed that that once great company which had values of social justice embodied in their principles would be thrown out the window and British jobs endangered. Why did Nestle not publicise that all the old favourites in Black Magic were being withdrawn? (If they did, it was done discreetly). I would like to have known in advance so that I could have made an informed choice.

“What A Disappointment”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 15/03/2013

I was given a box of Black Magic for the first time in years and was delighted because they were an old-time favourite. What a let-down....the chocolate isn't as dark or rich as before and the centres are all smooth, tasteless, sickly mush....nothing tasty at all. As soon as I started to mention them at work, my colleague knew what I was going to say,so I know it's not my taste-memory that's gone wrong. They are now very nasty chocolates. No more Black Magic for me thanks.

I don't think you will find any!! Inclusion of the word 'black' and then followed by 'magic' is big times not politically correct. If you are visitor, take some with you. If you are resident, then mail order from the UK.
