Not much more I can say. I've been playing for quite a while and the Yamaha Pacifica 112 is actually one of my favorites I ever played. Mind you the pickup change made a bit of a difference. Like I said before the neck and body are the best part of this guitar. I have to say that I like the Pacifica headstock design and the body is contoured nicely.

Yeah I know I replaced a few things but the construction of this instrument is really good and reliable.

As mentioned above the pick-up selector has a habit of losing it's connect, by this I mean that when you switch it up or down, the guitar will go silent as there is a break in the circuit. I have had similar comments from friends as well. Apart from that these guitars are indestructible. This was the first guitar I ever bought and I still love it and it's still going strong. OK it has a crack down the side and has been tape-ed up, but it still works. I also remove the single coils, the pick-up selector (it was no use) and the tone pot and it sounds brilliant, it's just so easy to play. I would highly recommend this to anyone, as it's just fun to customise. Don't let the brand name put you of either.

This is an excellent guitar considering it's price. I played simultaneously my pacifica and a Les Paul '76 using a..... I'm not sure what's the brand of the amp, but it's pretty big one, 100w or something like that and a 2*12 cabinet and it hasn't sounded too different at all. So, if you are starting to play guitar, this is a remarkable option, if you're advanced player, you'll even then be satisfied with it's true value

If you want a guitar and are thinking of spending up to about £300 get yourself a Yamaha Pacifica. Many people play this guitar including some of the world's top players but obviously you won't see this as they are sponsored by Fender and Gibson etc. But ask yourself this question if these guitars were no good why do they play them? They (the guitar gurus) could afford or are more likely given any guitar they want.

“I needed a backup guitar for my CIJ Fender Jazzmaster...”

★★★★★

written by superfuzz on 01/08/2007

I needed a backup guitar for my CIJ Fender Jazzmaster live (and also something I could put a JB in the bridge of for heavier songs!) but didn't have all that much money. On a recommendation from a friend I tried a Pacifica and loved it! Bargain at twice the price! Can get great tone out of this guitar clean or driven (great Hendrix tone!) and its great for fiddly bits (better than my jazzmaster in that respect!). IT IS NOT A GUITAR FOR ALL THAT VIRTUOSO like the guy a couple of reviews before this one, it's one to be played like a musical instrument in a band or along to a record because it's a pleasure to play, not because you've got long ginger hair and listen to cradle of filth or whatever. If you are looking for a guitar to start on that will take you quite a way without needing an upgrade, this is it, don't get a Squire! I've owned a REAL Strat (Fender USA Deluxe Lonestar Strat with custom shop pickups). This is an eighth of the price...and kinda explains why I still own this and don't have the fender any more.

“Reviews are for considered opinions that bare some...”

★★★★☆

written by Budd on 17/04/2007

Reviews are for considered opinions that bare some resemblance of credibility. When we are informed that the Yamaha 112 has received awards for the Best guitar in its class, are we going to listen to someone who trashes it without question or balanced opinion?

I have two other guitars, a Gibson Les Paul Standard 1980's and a Gibson ES 355, both of which are used for different reasons. This Yamaha guitar deserves credit. We purchased the Yamaha so that we could just pick it up at any time and practice or create new riffs, it is very light and versatile. We intend to leave it out on the stand and grab every time the mood takes us.

The build quality is as good if not better than any Gibson that we have seen, we spent years trying to find a 355 that did not have any obvious flaws, such as strings being too close to the edge of the fret board, or over lacquering or hardware being rusty or oxidised. We have written to Gibson on several occasions about the finish of their so-called custom build guitars, so this Yamaha puts them to shame. American manufacturers had better watch out, just having a name is not good enough and these Asian companies know how to put a guitar together.

For the amount it cost (£179.99) and we got it for £140 with guitar strap, you can get them for less, around £129 + £6.50 postage, there is little to complain about.

The guitar does not come with a box, strap or gig bag, the shop expects you to purchase one, which we did, but we got it at half price after haggling. We went for the natural colour with rosewood fret board so that we were not worried about getting paintwork marked or scratched; we could then just sand it down. Out of the box, so to speak, the action is a little high for our likening but this was quickly altered with the use of a small 'Allen' key to lower the strings, when we got home.

We are pushing the sound through a Marshall VS65 that on some settings is sounding just as is wanted. If we find it does not give us the sound we want we could change the pickups, the guitar is so cheap. The guitar is easy to use and handle it is very comfortable to play. We did not find that it was top heavy as suggested elsewhere even though the fret board is slightly longer than a Fender we compared it against.

If it starts falling to pieces? So what! All the bits seem replaceable and at worst we can just buy another one or even make the parts or upgrade them as they drop off. But this is unlikely to happen.

The vibrato does tend to send some strings out of tune but very slightly; similar vibrato can be done with the fingers on the fret board. The plug - lead for the sound is similar to a Les Paul in that it sits on the edge of the body instead of on the front like a Fender. This has never been a problem.

Would recomend over a Squier and Mexican Strat.

Funicats's Response to Budd's Review

Written on: 21/02/2008

I found this review helpful because I am just considering purchasing a new guitar and have narrowed the choice down to a Fender HSS (Mexican) for around 400 quid or a Yamaha Pacifica 112V for less than half (179 quid). I want the typical Strat sound as well as some humbucking richness, and comparing this to a couple of Gibsons means I am likely to be happy with a 112V. Thanks.

“As far as rapid alternate picking and sweep picking...”

★★★☆☆

written by maximumsatan on 01/08/2006

As far as rapid alternate picking and sweep picking goes the Yamaha Pacifica 112 is limiting to say the least. Tapping is a chore on this instrument and string skipping demands eons more effort than is required on a semi-decent axe. Even with the lightest strings and the lowest tuning advanced guitar techniques are simply not possible on the Pacifca. You can pull off some fairly face melting harmonic squeals and pinched harmonics. Precise rhythmic playing is relatively easy but the guitar is primarily useful for playing chord based music(indie, punk etc). If it's shred or metal that floats your boat then i advise you to save up a little extra and NOT invest in this guitar.

The Yamaha Pacifica is a fantastic buy for the beginner or intermeditae player. It is easy to play, looks fantastic and represents excellent value. It sounds brilliant and is very durable. All in all a good guitar for its price.

written by Statue on 04/12/2005

The Yamaha Pacifica 112 electric guitar is a good beginner/intermediate guitar. My Yamaha Pacifica could simply not stand up to me heavy string gage and hard strumming for very long. I found the finish chipped easily, even with the slightest knock. The tone was good enough for me to whale away on it for close to 10 years. I would have upgraded sooner if I had the money. It is solid but not inspiring.

written by Bardt on 20/09/2005

This Yamaha Pacifica 112 electric guitar may or may not last long. In my case, it had a good run for about a year. The body is cracking, the neck is warped, the input's taped, and the body is bumped in several places. If you play hard or fast melodies, it won't last you very long, unless you want a cheap guitar you can smash at the end of a show. That's a solution. For beginners/Intermediate players it's a perfect guitar. Treat it well and you might have it for 10 years. I personally am buying a Fender Jag-Stang (Designed by Kurt Cobain), because the Pacifica no longer satisfies my needs.

written by Lainey on 27/07/2005

This beautiful baby's appearance is based on the timeless startocaster by Fender. Although the strat is probably the most popular guitar, most people are starting to turn to the Yamaha Pacifica 112 instead. Personally I hate the strat and spent no time in the choice between the two. It's shape is more curvey and colour more metalic, especially in the red. Stick some decent strings, I use Elixer 9's-the best for solo's, on this and the pickups will bring a beautiful sound through that Marshall, even better on a full gain overdrive.

I've been a drummer for years and I've always wanted to play the guitar. Started accoustic then looked at the used electrics in the shop. I got this because it just felt good and it was $100 slightly used. I've never been happier. I've been playing for a few months and I'm telling you, you won't be disappointed.

I'm sick of people knocking this Yamaha Pacifica 112 guitar, I've been playing my Yamaha for 6 years, and it's been an awesome instrument, despite what most people say, it has good tone and sustain. A piece of equipment that really adds to it is the Digitech RP200 guitar processor. Although the guitar sounds good already, the processor makes it sound ten times better.

True, it is a decent guitar, but I suggest, that if you have been playing for a couple of years you try a Gibson Les Paul or any Fender and maybe that'll change your mind. It's good, but it doesn't last long.

“I was recommended the Yamaha Pacifica 112 guitar when...”

★★★★★

written by hyperdrive on 05/05/2004

I was recommended the Yamaha Pacifica 112 guitar when I began playing by a friend of mine who works in a music store. It has not disappointed one bit, and I don't believe you could buy a better guitar for under £200. It has served me well for learning and as years have passed for gigging, while the classic super-strat looks never go out of style.

Stylistically, I find it is comfortable with blues, pop and rock sounds - while it is master of none, it can tackle most types of music perfectly well. The bridge humbucker gives a loud, beefy sound, while the two single coil pickups are great for janglier funk and pop sounds, and the 5-way selector switch gives plenty of flexibility.

It is easy to play with a smooth, relatively narrow neck, and light enough to be comfortable on a shoulder strap, although the balance is a little neck-heavy. Furthermore, I find that the solid Japanese construction means my guitar almost never goes out of tune!

In short, this is a great entry level guitar, and priced as it is really has little competition.
