“Great online shop. ”

★★★★★

written by on 29/04/2010

Great online shop.

I ordered a Nikon D3000 at about 16:00 on day. The item was dispatched about 22:00 the same day and arrived around 13:00 the next. All items were present and in perfect condition. Also the best price I could find for this camera considering it included next day delivery.

Just because a few people had bad experiences is no reason to avoid this shop. Don't forget to look online for discount codes. I saved £20.

“Do not trust their delivery times if ordering online ”

Do not trust their delivery times if ordering online

I ordered Nikon D700, a lens and a spare battery. The items were (claimed to be) in stock and guaranteed as next day delivery with DHL for as long as ordered before 5pm.

The items were despatched late in the afternoon the day after I placed the order (I could follow this via Jessop's and DHL's tracking orders) and they did not arrive the next day. I called DHL to complain, they said they never guarantee next day deliveries and that the customer (i.e. Jessops) would have known this. Jessops promises on their web page deliveries until 9pm, up to 3 re-deliveries within the next 48 hours, and Saturday delivery. DHL told me they do none of these, and that Jessops would have known this when they send the parcel. It took me five days (not a day) to get this camera.

It seems that the delivery times and packages Jessops is advertising on their web site are completely incorrect. Had I known this I would have ordered from somewhere else (e.g. see Park Cameras).

I put feedback to Jessops but have not heard anything back. For over £2000 order I would have expected better than this. I would not use them again.

written by on 03/09/2009

Am I alone in finding the lack of stock and the layout of the Queens Road Brighton Jessops store unacceptable? Instead of having cameras and lenses on display in the window there are pictures of cameras and the display cases inside are usually 20% empty. We can understand that the company must minimise the stocks held but the reason for visiting a retailer is to be able to handle the camera.
The store ahs a centre island display which means that one person talking to an assistant and another making prints block off access to the counter, please change this layout ASAP.
Prices are also uncompetitive and they can no longer match other retailers prices. Sorry, but my Nikon D90 came from Argos wuth a £45 saving over the Jessops price.

Jessops, Worcester store gave wonderful service. I rang them to ask for advice about a model I was thinking of buying and was delighted to find that the person I spoke to was both knowledgeable and helpful. I was expecting to pay about £200 (having researched the cost online) and ended up paying £225 - but for that I also received a camera bag, a spare battery and a 2gb XD picture card. I had to haggle but I was well chuffed! I can't comment on their after sales service as thankfully I haven't had need of it. I would also like to add that I spoke to the same man three times in the space of an hour and this was on a Saturday morning so I can't think that they were particularly quiet. What a saint he really was.

“I like the idea of a chain camera store in every high...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 19/01/2009

I like the idea of a chain camera store in every high street as it means you can return items where ever you are and I have done so in the past with items that through no fault of Jessops I have developed problems whilst away from home. like a lot of shops in this field there will always be a `star` the one member of staff who knows what they are talking about. Unfortunately he won`t be wearing an identification badge when you need advice. Once again there always seems to be an arrogant one who doesn`t have time for you and just believes you are only there to handle the goods and then buy on line (probably true). These are observations that could apply to any shop but certainly hold true for Jessops. Customer service is very variable depending on store I have had good experiences in two northern UK shops regarding purchasing and returns but in a London shop recently whilst getting no attention from anyone the manager walked across from behind the counter and slammed shut an open cabinet right in front of me which contained the camera I was after and walked off again. `can I help you ? would have sufficed! Needless to say the item was ordered cheaper on line from another dealer.
All in all an indifferent store, convenient and with the occasional good deal to be had but generally more expensive than on line or other camera chains (LCE, Wilkinsons etc)
Recently they have been streamling their operation (closing some shops) so it may not be to rosy a future for Jessops but a shop in most towns still makes up for some of of the problems. Best bet is to check what offers they have at the time and if what you want is on offer go in armed already with all the information about the item you need before purchase.

Jessops Holborn matched an amazon price, it was the last lens on display. They are also very knowledgeable about srl cameras and lenses just like the staff in Jessops Cambridge.

“I bought a Fujitsu Siemans laptop from Jessops...”

★★★☆☆

written by jnicolson on 27/11/2008

I bought a Fujitsu Siemans laptop from Jessops Edinburgh on 18/03/2006. The laptop never functioned properly from purchase. Jessops would not deal with it as far as I am concerned, and referred me to Fujitsu Siemans for servicing 3/2007. After the 1st service the laptop still had the same faults, froze, and reverted to the French Alphabet randomly. After the 2nd service the laptop was noisy, overheating, and the screen was red on startup. I cut the power, and phoned Fujitsu Siemans again. I was told ' something has been left inside by mistake' 'just pack it up now, don't use it' ' .After the 3rd service the laptop was returned outside its years guarantee with the same faults. Meantime I used my home PC and had to purchase a reliable laptop elsewhere. 9/2008 I switched on the Fujitsu laptop. After startup the screws and components could be seen as the screen turned black. There was a burning smell. I cut the power. Fortunately I had not left the room, and was able to deal with it.. I complained 'Sale of Goods Act'. Jessops letter... average lifespan of a laptop 60 months, divide £1199.99 by 60 = £19.99 x 26 months usage = £520.00 = partial refund of £679.99. Laptop to be collected, then payment by cheque. I contacted Barclaycard for a refund of £1199.99 since I have Fujitsu Siemans 3 service reports, and an independent PC engineers report stating the motherboard was always faulty. Components were replaced , on each service, the laptop was further damaged due to their error on the 2nd service, damaged components changed again, then the laptop was returned to me, posing a fire risk in my home. The Laptop involved Fujitsu Siemans AMILO M3438G / BU M3438G/ PM 760.

written by T HOLDSWORTH on 21/03/2007

Staff in my local branch of Jessops are bad.

MORE THAN THERE JOBS WORTH ATTITUDE.

The camera I bought in Jessops in the south of England, broke down after 11 months, and was sent away for repair twice. First time at Easter and it was away for approx 6 weeks, it came back and no sooner developed more problems sent away for approx another 6 weeks. No sooner was it back but it broke down for the third time, this time I ask the manager for a new camera, but could I pay extra for a up grade as I had no faith in the camera model. The manager said this was not possible I had to take the same model. I got the new camera about 3 weeks later the new camera is now giving problems.

Unfriendly and aggressively treated as soon as I mentioned a price match. They are not sensitive to those customers who don't want to pay more than the global street price. "Rip off Britain" at work.

Musicman's Response to Grasshopper's Review

Written on: 28/02/2006

I have worked in retail for a number of years and the one thing that really got my back up was the large number of customers who think dealers make a huge mark up on products and then should give them away.
Everything is now very cut throat and discount this and discount that. It needs to be sorted.
What will we all do when the supermarkets take over the dedicated photo, video and audio stores? There will be no specialists to help people like you!
Just think why some shops have higher prices and don't want to do price matches. The have purchased the goods, keep them in stock for a few weeks or so, trained their staff and they need to pay them, pay electric, water, rent etc. and make a proffit!!!!
If you don't want to pay these prices go and open an account with Canon, Nikon, Sigma or Pentax etc. and see how you get on (minimum of £20K needed I think). I bet you would't sell a camera at £750.00 and make £50-£60 proffit because thats what the dealer makes. Trust me, I've been there. And it's tight fisted people who have introduced price match in to the high street and just remember "what goes around comes, around".

Phatbacktyre's Response to Grasshopper's Review

Written on: 18/02/2007

Jessops - most of the staff I have come across seem to be working hard to get the right deal for the customer. There are one or two who don't care though. As far as prices go, I have seen camera shops disappear one after the other over the last 5 years on the High Street, and continued pressure on profits has been the reason for most. The web is not a marketplace to compete with, unless you are on equal terms. If you want a shop to try out stuff, shop with Jessops - very few other stores have the range, and have you ever gone into the other 'national large retailer' who sells cameras? (and microwaves and dishwashers and iPod's and SatNav and TV's etc.) - not a great place to visit!

Grasshopper, after you were so critical of Jessops, you revealed in your comment to Musicman that you occupy a fairly high-up position in a company also selling photographic equipment.... you wouldn't be using this board for commercial purposes would you, to nobble the competition? Apologies if I've got that wrong...

Grasshopper's Response to Grasshopper's Review

Musicman, quite obviously you are not aware of the profits being made by manufacturers and retailers like Jessops in the UK. I cannot believe gear prices are higher in the UK than the rest of the world without someone making more profits somewhere along the line.
Jessops is in a strong position to fight for a good deal for people in the UK, if they can't smell the coffee and put pressure to bear on manufacturers, then they have failed the ordinary shopper.
And before you make any comments about people who object to paying more than people in other countries (& that includes Japan, China, Thailand & Taiwan - the major manufacturing centres), please be very sure about your facts. Retailer who perpetuate the rip-off Britain culture is not serving the buying public, their employees or themselves. Short-term gains in profits will turn into long term loss in goodwill.
I also work in retail, and I am also involved in the photographic business. In fact, I have the privilege to occupy a fairly senior position in a national chain of retailers, and proud to be getting a better deal for my customers from major manufacturers than Jessops. I welcome those customers who shop around, because they give me a chance to champion a good deal for them.
Grasshopper, your customers don't owe you a living, get them a good deal before they find a better deal elsewhere.

I can fully recommend Jessops in Leamington Spa - the staff have been very helpful on all the occasions I have been in. The digital printing service is one of the best I've used too. I bought a Sony T1 a while back, and the manager was able to match my internet price for me. The staff went out of their way to advise me and gave me demonstrations of all the different cameras available. In the end I went with the Sony mainly because of the looks though! Great store, thanks folks!

A great experiance, they spent time with me and helped to identify the various benifits of the two camera I was considering. They even let me try various lens (that I didn't plan to buy).

Having chosen the camera, they part exchanged my old camera for a very fair price and even matched a WEB price on a telephoto lense (simply taking my word for it)!

“Jessops - Disgusted at the Maidenhead Branch today......”

written by escape on 13/10/2004

Jessops - Disgusted at the Maidenhead Branch today... I knew what I wanted and they had it on the shelf, however this Camcorder Accessory was not available everywhere, so I was content to stand at the counter to be served...

There was a Technician in the background that could be forgiven for her dedicated tasks, however there were TWO sales staff at the counter and neither would acknowledge that I existed... I had the item clearly visible and ready to pay, but was still ignored! I understand that all customers need dealing with, but:
One was dealing with a customer who didn't want to pay in full for the services on their camera and the sales person just wandered off to the back to make a phone call after about 10 minutes. The other guy was dealing with a parts query and he again ignored the fact that I existed and proceeded to make phone enquiries for that customer. I appreciate that both customers were entitled to service, but I was not amused even after another customer walked out in a huff of waiting 5 minutes earlier, fed up of being ignored. ... After 15 minutes total, I put the item down in disgust and walked out! This was not a very big store so was easy for me to be seen (in front of them) ... If they wanted to!!! Just an acknowledgement would have gone a long way!

I know that I can't just get my item anywhere, but am OK in waiting until the next time I pass a similar (NON JESSOPS) shop and purchase elsewhere!!!!!!!!

I spent 7 years in Senior Retail Management and it was clear that this store needs urgent staff training.

I work for Jessops and I have to say that I'm sorry that you feel that your experience was negative.

But a lot seems to lie on the sales staff, and as a said member of the staff I have to point out that working for Jessops is quite a technical job - with countless different questions been thrown at us daily.

Plus we often have to know about a wide range of products - chemicals etc.

All this while dealing with people asking for internet price matches, best deals and discounts off shelf price.

My point, well most staff are paid minimun wage, average salary £4.85 - so please bear with us.

We try but we can't please everyone all the time

I have to agree with the original poster, I used to put up with the service at Maidenhead because I had to - but now I just order everything online from www.silverprint.co.uk and www.retrophotographic.co.uk. They're friendly, helpful and knowledgeable on the phone and the few times I've been to their shop (Silverprint).

The high-street shops are complaining that online sales are killing them, well - if they had 'customer service' perhaps this would not be the case...

I agree with this review because I have had problems with customer service in Jessops Swansea Branch I think the whole company could use some customer service training.
I doesn't take more than a second to let a customer know they have been seen and you will help them A.S.A.P.
I recently visited the USA and I am still amazed by the levels of service received there they could certainly teach Jessops a thing or two.

“Jessops Camera Shop-Having just read the previous...”

written by Belgarion on 14/07/2004

Jessops Camera Shop-Having just read the previous review, there is certainly a difference between the branches in my experience. As per a review in the camera section on the Fuji F610, the East Kilbride branch, I can certainly recommend. I found the manager and his staff to have high levels of appreciation towards their customers. In fact to be honest when i took the camera back in I fully expected to hear the usual "Oh we will have to send it away sir, that will be £££££'s"

Even when the manager took the battery and memory card out of the u/s camera and put it into a new one, I thought it was just to check it. The penny did drop (call me slow at times!) when he took the wrist strap off the old one and put it on the new camera. The words "There you go sir, on us!" were certainly unexpected. The camera problem..well the F610 had suddenly taken on a life of its own but the free replacement, no questions asked on a £300 camera, is definitely high customer service!

I wanted to buy a camcorder and was told by a friend that Jessops does price match. When I phoned Jessops they were very helpful and said they even price matched the net with a printout proof. I told them the net price and they said yes we can do that. When I went to the shop the next day I was made to feel small, like I was making it up and totally humiliated. Their price match was £70.00 higher. Not a place I would shop at again.

Jessops does price match within a 20 mile radius of its stores, and although it does try to price match further it can't always.

My advice would be to always get the name of the person your speaking to.

I would recommend using Jessops again, as I for one work for them and I know that sometimes things go wrong but we do try and on behalf of Jessops I can only say sorry for your experience.
