“Avoid Capital One as they are garbage!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Sherekahn on 08/02/2024

Avoid Capital One they’re garbage! Read all of this review for an honest true review. I’ve been with Capital One since 1998 and I’ve yet to have a credit limit increase which has remained at £2500. Back in 1998 this was good, today is dated and puny especially with today’s economic climate. If you try to get a credit limit increase on their online app it’s instantly denied (as I discovered) and if you write to them (as I did) you get an ambiguous response telling you that they can’t do it manually and you have to use their online app!! In other words it’s impossible yet when it comes to charging you interest on your account they are really sharp! Because of this I’m really annoyed and disgusted with their actions, clearly a long term customer like myself means nothing to them!!! So be careful with Capital One and avoid them! I’ve paid off my balance and won’t be allowing them to charge me any more interest! Date of experience: 08 February 2024

“No compensation for fraud victims”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Hardman55 on 11/08/2023

This is the worst experience I have ever had with a bank or credit card company. I noticed a few weeks ago that two cash withdrawals totalling £380 had been taken from my account. I never, never withdraw cash using a credit card due to the high charges, and to the fact that I have more than enough in my bank account to cover any cash requirements I may have. I contacted them to report the matter and they told me to destroy my existing card and they would send me another. They also said they would investigate the fraudulent activity. Initially, they refunded one of the withdrawals quite quickly and, when I contacted them, said they were still investigating the other but credited the amount anyway. They then informed me that they had concluded this was not fraudulent activity and intended to charge me for the withdrawals and the associated charges. I was completely shocked. I live alone and no one has access to my card or a pin number. In addition, in the many years I have been with this company I have never once withdrawn cash on a card. Suddenly they were implying that at the age of 68, having never in my life been involved in any form of criminality or financial impropriety, I was attempting to defraud them of £380 or colluding with someone else to do so. I appealed the decision but they refused to overturn it saying it was “not possible” to reach any other conclusion other than my having used the card myself or allowed someone else to do so. Well, they are wrong and I am both beyond furious, and extremely upset, by this event. Just a cursory look at my account history should indicate that this was totally unusual activity. An almost identical thing happened to a friend of mine with an Amex card a while ago and they refunded the money immediately. This is so wrong, and while I will appeal to the Financial Ombudsman and disseminate the details of this experience as widely as I can to warn others, I am left feeling pretty helpless and badly used by this experience. This company is not acting in good faith. If they want people to use their products they should be prepared to compensate for fraudulent activity due, I can only conclude, to inadequate safety measures on their part.

“Disgraceful Lender”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/07/2016

When I made redundant I ask all my lenders to help for 60 days by not adding interest. All managed to comply (Tesco, MBNA & Virgin )apart from Crapital One. They took their £50 of interest and I hope they enjoy it as that is the last they will get. At any point I get the opportunity to lose them a few potential customers I will take it, so hopefully within a few reviews this disgrace of a company will lose far more than the extra £50 they HAD to take. Use another Lender as these are uncaring fools.

“Astronomical interest and charges & annoying!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Broussardeh489 on 24/04/2016

Annoying that every time you use the card it is declined even when a large balance is available. It seems they like to have you ring then up every time so they can check it is you using the card and not a fraudster - slightly over zealous and making me look bad at the store!

“Appalling - Capital One couldnt care less about customers”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 287Perry on 20/08/2015

Worst card ever, I had a few credit cards and went into a debt management plan so I could pay them all off quickly. All lenders agreed to the Debt Management Payments but only Capital One applied a DEFAULT to my credit file. Even after I had paid the card off in full, it continued to report monthly I was in default - so for more than 6 years after the account is closed they will have had a very negative impact on my account. They are twts, it affects my ability to get credit for years, all for reducing my payments on my small balance from £10.20 a month to £7.40 a month for only 8 months. Avoid at all costs, they couldn't care less about their customers, it doesn't even help them to put this on peoples credit files - they just do it out of nastiness. I've phoned them dozens of times, always foreigners answer, never English, and they point blank refuse to do anything.

“Where's my card??”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Fanning364 on 10/08/2015

I applied for a card 5 weeks ago and was given an acceptance straight away. 7-10 working days have long gone and after 4 phone calls,I was told they'd had problems with their computer but my card was in the final stages and then I'd receive it within 7-10 working days. Again, nothing has arrived. I would never have bothered applying if I'd known I'd have this problem. And then to top it all off,you can't even contact them on weekend cos they seemingly don't open at weekend. Biggest joke ever. I would never recommend these jokers to anyone.

“Worst Company going avoid at all cost. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Zimmerman59 on 22/07/2015

This company would not even know the meaning of the phrase ‘’customer service’’ if it jumped out right in front of them. I have had some terrible experiences with other company’s but these guys out do them all. The highlight being the gem of how not to do customer service ‘’if you don’t like it, pay up your remaining balance and clear off somewhere else’’ . If you are thinking about being a customer forget this company, shambolic, unprofessional, they are many better companys out there.

“Incompetant”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Skylerq98 on 21/11/2014

In error I made a large overpayment on my capital one credit card , I have been with them for several years and was ecstatic that at long last I had managed to clear the debt. I phoned them and asked them to close the account and refund my overpayment to my current account. I was informed that the refund would be made within 3- 5 working days but this didn't happen, I phoned again and was told that this was incorrect and they could not refund my cash until 10 working days had passed - still nothing so I phoned again and was told that the refund had been made but would take 5 working days to show in my account- still nothing. On my last phone call I was told that the system had failed and overridden the refund so they had sent me a cheque - which hasn't arrived. Now I have been informed that they can not credit my account until they have stopped the cheque - no one appears to know what they are doing! they are a waste of space as far as I am concerned this is theft. I am now waiting for a phone call on Monday but I wouldn't like to take bets on receiving it. Any ideas on how to get my money back?

“Waste of time to apply if you have perfect credit”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Morrow99 on 25/08/2014

I filled out application info. for Capital One Quicksilver credit card 6wks ago. Two weeks after that they needed proof of income for 2013, residence, and energy bill. I sent those, and two wks later they asked for the same info. again, so I had to call to tell them I had already sent that. After 4wks I called to see what the delay was, and was told that they were still working on it. I was told to call again on Aug. 13, if I had not heard anything. I called then, and was told the home office was having some issues with working on applications. But to call again on wed. Aug. 20. When I called then I was told that I was denied. He said they had sent a letter on Aug. 11, which I never received. I have perfect credit, so figured they did not want me. I applied for another credit card from Chase, which I received in 1wk. I learned from Chase that I would receive that card after being on the phone with him for less than 30min. Capitol One is one of the worst businesses that I have had to work with, and was glad that they denied me, so I can just quit with them, and forget the headache.

“Simple, quick, great customer service”

★★★★★

written by on 29/05/2014

Capital one finally gave me a chance to start building my credit rating after I had limited history. The online account is 100 times better than aqua's and there is a smartphone app so you can keep track of your balance ect. Very helpful customer services on activating my card and was easy to set up a direct debit and payment date. I personally have no issues with capital one who in my opinion were so much more organised than Aqua and vanquish who I also applied through. So far I could not point out any negatives with my experience and would defiantly recommend the company. The interest rate on the classic card is no more than the Barclays initial credit card; and the APR rate advertised is the rate you get, unlike aqua who hiked the APR rate up with a lower credit limit!

“This company is so confusing and unorganised.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by arthur2506 on 22/03/2014

I had a Capital One classic card for nearly 2 years with a £200 limit that never went up, then I got progress card. I paid the classic off in full each month so there was no loin in having two so I closed my account and kept the progress and it was considered 'platinum' and the APR goes down every 6 months. The limit stayed at £200 for a year even thou I was paying more than the minimum payment, if not in full. I sent them letters and also sent them a lot of personal documents to have them change my limit. Out of the blue my card stops working and I call up to be told my account have been withdraw and I need to pay balance in full. I asked person after person and sent letters and made a complaint and still no one has any idea why they chose not to offer me a card any more. On top of that they lost my personal documents in there office and nobody is accountable. Company is a complete waste of time just to try and get interest off of you. They never raise there limits!!!

“shower of cowboys”

★☆☆☆☆

written by sayitasitis2012 on 21/03/2014

i had difficulty cancelling a continuous payment authority with a supplier that i furnished with my credit card details. capital one were not interested and eventually i wrote to their fraud manager. he agreed to clear my account and said he would keep an eye on it. within weeks i received a call from their indian call centre with a female pressing me for payment. i asked her what she knew about my account. she replied that my number had been generated by the computer and she wasnt familiar with it. i asked her was she aware of my dealings with their fraud manager. a short silence was followed by " thank you for calling capial one. " and she hung up on me. i would point out that they rang me. the debt was for £12! it was a late payment fee for not paying the amount the fraud manager had agreed that i was incorrectly charged and he had had written off. checking my file with experian showed that i am showing as an outstanding debtor and hence my credit rating score is smashed. experian contacted capital one on my behalf. they insist the £12 is still outstanding. so slick advertising will attract the clients. what a pity those prospective clients do not check reviewcentre before signing up!

Sayitasitis2012's Response to sayitasitis2012's Review

Written on: 11/06/2015

I have been clearing out my paperwork and I must point out that what happened to me was in 2008.
reading through the paperwork I noticed that capital one had sold the " debt " to a firm of debt collectors, who decided, upon my advice, not to send anyone around to enforce payment.
this was for £63.00
that would have been their cut on top of what I wouldn't pay capital one.
correspondence with the manager led me to the impression that everything had been cleared.
the debt collectors were called off and I thought that was it.
until I found out that my credit rating had been smashed, and I received a letter from Capital One saying that I owed £1.50
like other contributors I had severe difficulty communicating with their indian based call centre, so much so that know I refuse to deal with any company that has a call centre ( customer service! ) based overseas.
I spoke to trading standards and they offered to take up my case, but it was too much hassle copying and posting all the correspondence.
being blacklisted for credit didn't bother me as due to the fact that I am getting on in years I had no need for it, thankfully.
I did though at the time have an Asda credit card.
I knew nothing about being blacklisted until I had a payment on ebay refused for just over £4!
I tried to do the transaction another two times with no success when I got a message to contact my card issuer, Guardian Royal Exchange.
this I did and I asked what was going on.
they told me due to the information received from a credit reference agency they had reduced my credit limit from £2500 to £250.00!
and as my balance was just under £300 could I make an immediate payment to bring my balance down to under £250.
I told him I would do better than that. I paid the full amount and closed the account.
I swear that I could hear a chuckle of satisfaction in his voice when I closed it. I think he thought I was bluffing.
I only got the card in the first place as I was accosted in store by a rep and she pointed out I could save 2p a litre off petrol if I bought it at Asda.
I had it for about a year and the balance was settled via direct debit every month.
fortunately I wasn't embarrassed over this debacle as my transactions were not on a face to face basis., though I had the stress of knowing that my credit record, which was unblemished for over 40 years if they have been going that long, was now in tatters, due to the actions of incompetents, and I class the fraud manager in that group.
should I have been younger and needed access to credit, which I did in those days, as most of us do, my life would have been very difficult and I would have had to take yet further action to rectify the situation.
I don't know if they still use indian call centres, but if they phone you up out of the blue, even if it is to chase you for late/non payment, ask them how they got your number.
it is unlawful to generate calls via the computer. I asked the question where she got my number from.
she was naïve enough to admit that the computer generated my number.
trading standards would be interested to hear of any instances.
to complain about your credit card company just have a look on google for plenty of advice.
should anyone reading this happen to go to court with this shower as long it is in the north west I would be more than willing to be a witness to their more than questionable practices.
my card was not a classic, it was the capital one mastercard.
I would add that this account was closed, on MY insistence.
they were quite happy to let me carry on using it.
I spoke to my bank at the time and they said nothing untoward would happen between me and them.
off to do some shredding now!

TO THE MODERATOR.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REVIEW WAS FOR A CAPITAL ONE MASTERCARD, AND NOT THE CLASSIC UNDER WHICH THIS THREAD IS POSTED.

Sayitasitis2012's Response to sayitasitis2012's Review

Written on: 09/07/2015

I was telephoned today 9th July 2015 by a representative from the Executives Office at Capital One, who I was aware was making enquiries in relation to an email I sent to the Chief Executive of that company some time ago.
I wont name the representative as I know names are deleted before the review is accepted.
I was both surprised and impressed by the thoroughness of his enquiries into what happened 7 or 8 years ago.
He was very apologetic and assured me that practices were different now than from when I experienced them although that is no consolation to me.
As I have said previously, what they did had little effect on my credit status as I was a long standing customer with a bank so I had my cards etc and had no cause to apply for loans.
My credit file is now clear due to the passage of time. ( stains stay on your record for 6 years. )
I couldn't have expected more in the response that I got from Capital One and I would urge anyone who has encountered questionable customer services to email their Chief Executive Officer relating your experience.
It would appear that they are trying to resolve issues and not just pay lip service to complaints, but they cant resolve them from the top if they are not made aware of them.
I cant raise the star rating from * however because the name Capital One will always leave sour memories.

“Capital One credit card”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/10/2013

They really are an awful company. Got all my details incorrect, lost my application half way though, I couldn't update my address details whilst still in the application phase so I am having to run the risk that my card and PIN en up going to a neighbour's flat instead. I applied for the card for the 0% forex fees, but we are approaching 3 months since my first application and I still haven't got the card. I've already been on my 3 week trip to the US and come back. Completely useless. Avoid them at all costs.

“Just don't go there..........”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Routeofallevils on 07/05/2013

What a shame that review centre doesn't have a zero star rating as this is what I'd give Capital One. My husband had a credit card with Capital One, we called because they just changed him to online banking without his consent. He didn't use the card and no longer had it, so we requested a card so that we could register online....nothing arrived, we rang and were told for data protection purposes they couldn't give us access, so we requested a paper statement.......nothing arrived, we called and they said again for data protection purposes they couldn't give us a balance, so we cancelled the card and were told the final statement would arrive, guess what they posted it to his online banking.......that we couldn't access as we didn't have card which is what we'd been complaining about from the beginning, we've been on the phone now for over an hour, keep getting cut off (the sixth time) as they're obviously not meeting their call stats and still don't have a resolution,in the meantime we've been charged 6 weeks interest. Total rip off company, we've complained to the ombudsman, nothing from him either.......just avoid them then you will not be ripped off like we are. Terrible customer service. How on earth can they cite Data Protection when frankly the only thing they're protecting is their own profit.
