The Siemens M35 is the best phone to use in my part of the world. This is because of the conditions found here-you need a phone that can survive the shocks and has the waterproofness that the phone has. The style is marvellous and void of the monotony of other phones keep up the good work SIEMENS especially on the M35.

The M35 is quite simply one of the best phones that siemens or any other manufacturer have made. It's easy to use and great value for money. If your looking for an all purpose phone for normal and simple everyday use, you won't do much better for that price. Get One!!

★★★★☆

written by Richard Jewell. on 22/01/2002

The M35 from Siemens is a great little phone in general, costing only £69. This is approximately half what the similar sized and specced Nokia 3310 costs!
Menus are generally fairly easy once you are used to them but I find the lack of a proper daily alarm clock annoying and the existing alarm a right pain to use. Games, logo and ringtone provision a bit dismal but this doesn't worry me too much because i'm older than 13 years!
My major gripe is poor battery life. I'm a averaging 2.5 days between charges with no calls made/taken and just a few seconds of the alarm sounding each morning. My old NEC was managing 8 days in similar use before it expired!
On balance, great value for money, reasonably well specced phone, that fits unobtrusively in the pocket. Can't ask for more that that at the excellent price.

Overall the M35 from Siemens is a good phone. I wouldn't like to part with this type. If only i could get the electricals fixed so it wouldn't keep freezing on certain screens i would be very happy. But i highly rate this phone anyway and think it is brilliant

“I've had my Siemens M35 phone for about 6 months and...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Mike. on 15/01/2002

I've had my Siemens M35 phone for about 6 months and the menu system continues to annoy me. It's just not logical - requiring far too many button-presses in most cases. Things are hidden away in strange places. Nokia have got the best menu system easily, in my opinion. I had an Ericsson for a while and the menus on that were pretty bad too. Maybe the newer models are better?
Am I the only person who wants a normal 'telephone' style ringtone? There's some funky tunes in the M35 but I dont much want to look like an idiot when my phone rings. The selection of 'normal' ring tones is hopeless in most mobile phones in my opinion. I've been forced to try and emulate a sensible 'ring' by using the composer which is far more difficult to use than on other phones I've tried.
It's a shame because I like the look and feel of the thing - I just cant recommend it because it's a swine to use. You CAN get used to anything, however.
More negativity: the message list fills up after about 4 texts, it seems, and WHY is there no 'delete all messages' function?? You have to keep clicking through and deleting them one by one + the 'battery low' alarm goes off in a horrendous fashion even when all tones are switched off! Go figure. It's also slow - Flashing up 'Please wait' in many instances. There's so much wrong with this phone that it's winding me up just thinking about it all! I better stop there.
The phone is well built tho, and feels like it'll take a battering without complaint. It's good value too! Good value for a headache. I hate this phone - give me a Nokia any day...
Mike.

Please tell me where this phone requires noticeably more button presses than a Nokia (ie 3330). From what I can see this phone has an even more initiutive interface than a 3330.
<br>
<br>Ok, I agree, the SMS feature leaves things out that you want, for example the phone has no internal memory; all messages are stored on your SIM card. If you have a 4K sim card it will only allow you to store 5-6 texts. 8K will let 17 fit. Where I live there is actually an operator with a 64K sim card (>50 texts).
<br>
<br>But also remember that this phone has a calendar which really comes in handy. You can use it to keep a schedule; you can literally dump your Palm if you drag one around...

What's the deal about Siemen's or Nokia's menu system? The Hagenuk (now defunct) GlobalHandy released 5 years ago allows the user to fully customisable the menu structure! So everybody will be happy with their own personalised menu. I have not seen anything comparable since....sigh....

Hi, thank you for commenting on my review.
<br>But something that may make you a bit happier owning this phone is that you can press numbers to navigate in the menu system. I.e press [MENU][2][6][1][SELECT] to enter the alarm activation.
<br>
<br>Just count the "place" where the menu you want to access is. I.e Internet = 1 Office&Fun = 2 Messages = 3 etc. It is a shame Siemens haven't noted this in their manual.

Ok Tobias, for instance the ALARM. To activate it...I'm counting 11 presses, minimum. And that's because I know where it is, and I'm scrolling UP from the 'Office & Fun' menu instead of down the list which would make it 14. My main point here is that they've hidden the alarm under 'Office & Fun'>'Chronometer'>'Alarm'! It's in there along with the Stopwatch and Countdown timer. Why not put the Alarm Clock along with the other clock settings??!! The other clock settings are under 'Setup'>'Clock' which is 18 button presses when you scroll down the menus. The Nokia has a 'CLOCK' menu on the MAIN MENU which I can access in 5 clicks. In there, you've got ALARM CLOCK as the first option then Clock Settings, Date Settings, Stopwatch, countdown,etc. Now that is what I call LOGICAL. (The Nokia also has 'REMINDERS' too.) I notice in alot of these raving reviews for the M35 that people are saying stuff like "Everyone's got a Nokia.." etc. While I agree it's good to be different/original, I want a phone that WORKS well, not something to impress my mates with in the playground...

Tough, but not extremely tough

★★★★☆

written by Tobias. on 13/01/2002

Tough, but not extremely tough
Well, this phone is something special. It is some kind of a hybrid between a professional phone that may suit business users, with a wide range of features such as a calendar, WAP, 14.4 modem and more. It has features which will satisfy teenagers and younger users as well; games, predictive text input, et cetera. The phone's biggest feature is its extra toughness, however. It should be able to withstand daily wear and tear without problems: rain, dropping it, dust, mud. However, it will not withstand immersion in water. But who wants to take a swim with a phone?

Quality:
When I first bought the phone, it felt like the best quality phone ever. However, I have had quality problems with this phone. The first M35 I had lasted just for one day before its internal antenna probably jumped loose from its socket, since it was losing all reception. I got it replaced immediately in the store with no struggle at all. The second M35 I had lasted for half a year. Then the earpiece started to sound muffled and coarse. This time it was sent out for repair and I was without a phone for 4 weeks. After this time, I got it replaced. However, I am giving Siemens another chance here. Factory faults can occur in all brands of phones. I guess that I was just unlucky.

Hardware:
A moderate amount of power is required to press the keys, which may appear irritating to some people. But still, they work well, so I should not be complaining. In fact, it feels nice to press them, they are made of rubber! The high-res 4 row display works well too. But the backlight could have been stronger, and the top line is occasionally in shadow. Sound quality from the earpiece range from fair to good depending on what voice the person you are talking to has. I have never had a problem listening to what the other person is saying, but it seems the sound is missing the mid-high frequency band, or something. Outgoing quality is world class. The phone seems to keep a lock on the GSM signal pretty well. Now for something weird. If you only let the phone lie idle in your pocket, it can last for well over a week - which is very good. However, as soon as you start "playing" with the phone, i.e playing games, setting calendar, writing SMS, talking, etc. standby life dramatically disminishes. Which I'd call not good. I've had a moderately used phone only last as long as 2-3 days. You can talk in it for 3-4 hours constantly before the standard NiMH battery is flat. Included charger works well. There is even a battery discharge feature in the phone enabling you to pump out the battery before charging it so that its life dramatically extends. The phone weighs 130g which must be considered light for an outdoor phone.

Features:
The M35 has a great deal of features. Calendar, T9 SMS, modem, clock, timer, WAP (which you can read HTML with too!), profiles, games, ring tone composer and a whole lot of other stuff. I guess you won't get disappointed. But some things are not designed very well, i.e setting an alarm takes longer than it could have taken. I would actually like to have seen a voice dial feature. After all, this is an outdoor phone. Tapping in a number on a keypad can be hard with thick gloves. Alarm clock does its job, as well the as timer/stopwatch. Calendar is fine, allowing you to set appointments weekly, daily, monthly, yearly or once. Great for keeping i.e a class schedule or anything similiar.

Final words:
A tough phone which will satisfy most users. It's not perfect - but very good, and a great deal considering its low cost - $140 today.

Tobias,
<br>This is a very good, fair review of the M35. I agree with your findings on all the points you mention.
<br>Please ignore my comments about the alarm in my review which follows this one. You clearly mention the alarm situation above.
<br>I should have read this review first...

Re: M35 menus can be navigated by numerical position. (pressing corresponding keypad numbers). Thank you for this tip, Tobias. This has made a considerable difference to my opinion of the phone in general. It is, indeed, a shame it's not documented in the user manuals. I'm amazed I didn't try this out myself as other mobiles have the same feature!
<br>
<br>Regards,

I bought this Siemens M35 phone because it was different from all the Nokias everyone else was getting and is WAP ready. Unfortunately the service isn't available here yet.. not even fax services! I've found it to be reliable although I do have issues with it's antenna sensitivity and battery life using the standard 500mah battery. Otherwise it's fine.

I go out on field works often and the siemens m35i proved to be really shock, dust, and water resistant. I've been on rough terrains and difficult weather and I've had the phone for almost two years now. It still doesn't have a single scratch or any sign of wear and tear!

★★★★★

written by babychoy. on 15/11/2001

i haven't seen a shock/dust/water-proof mobile as stylish as the Siemens M35 until the advent of the ME45. but looks aside, let's talk about it's features. compared to a more popular Finnish brand of the same price, this one's got the standard features plus WAP, a multilingual T9 Text Input System, country code and network listings, a mini-organizer, ringing-to-SMS alert tones (so you wont get bored with the usual "beep thrice" alerts), message templates, in-phone address book, cool games, multiple user-edited profiles... and the list goes on. the vibration alert's a bit weak as well as the battery. the screen is, somehow, lowered, resulting a shadow on top of it which can be a bit annoying once in a while. i suggest you get the gray-colored one. this is an inexpensive alternative to the Siemens ME45 and the Nokia 6250. don't say i didn't warn you about the battery life... :)

This mobile phone is great, ive had many phones,(Nokia 3210; Trium Geo; Motorolla V2288; Vodafone MN1; Phillips C12.) But this is the best phone ive had! Although you cant change the covers, this doesnt really matter because the phone is quite stylish as it is! The menu system is great, and so is the 3D maze game! The ringtones you can get sound quite good and my battery seems to last about 5-6 days even though i talk on it quite a bit. Overall, I think this phone is much better than Nokia's partially, cos Nokias will never change!

any one who rates this fone lower than a nine is obviously nine years old and owns a blokia 3310. truth is , if i owned a blokia i'd shoot myself!
this fone is brilliant , no argument!
ok ,ok , it doesn't have changable covers, but show me a water proof fone that does!
yes , it doesn't have sms operator logos , but hey , do i desperately need one to prove how cool i am?
this fone has everything and more , the games are fabulous , 3D maze kicks any snake or snake derived game.
the user interface is soo easy once you've got used to the buttons(which takes all of three minutes...) and the soft key is one helpful little thingy blokia havn't picked up on yet!
the call quality is better than any of the fones i've owned previously ( ericsson a2618 , trium mars , motorola v100 , motorola c520 , sony cmd j5 etc.etc.) and the menu is also much more intuitive than any of those fones.

over it's a fine fone and any one disagrees needs their heads checkin...

I now have my Siemens M35 for over a year and have been very impressed by it. It is a refreshing alternative to the Nokia 3310/3330 and cheaper. It is also extremely reliable and rarely drops a call, even in a poor signal area. The WAP browser is quite good for information services and makes the most of its relatively small screen. Overall a stylish and value for money phone. I would recommend it to anyone.
