“Too many niggling faults with my Kia Sedona, paintwork...”

★★★☆☆

written by RJE on 16/06/2008

Too many niggling faults with my Kia Sedona, paintwork easily marked, keeps cutting out and regularly won't start due to fault between fob and car - been back to dealers (even tried different ones) with no joy. Drive past a radio mast and it cuts out, go past police/firemen on radios and it cuts out! Kept locking us in as central locking kept activating while driving, steering rack had to be replaced after 3 years, gets through tyres - set every year - despite regular tracking and careful driving, now the wheel bearings have gone on the front. It is a shame this car has so many faults. If more reliable it would be a great buy as it is so roomy and convenient for families and the kids friends you always seem to end up taking with you to sports events etc.

Will never have another Kia, the worst car I have ever owned. My 2002 Kia Sedona needed the coolant system pipes replaced at three years six months. It is now off road with fuel injector problems. My dealer can't or won't give me a final price for repair. I have been without the car for fifteen days and they just don't care.

I've had me Kia Sedona 2.9TDI Auto since 2003. Does only 5000 miles a year and every year I have to replace the front pads before MOT. Had to do front disks this year as well. Mileage 45,000 and Y reg.
Smoke on acceleration is 'embarrassing'.. Stick your foot down and it belches out leaving a smog for following drivers to negotiate and breathe in. In these days of 'pollution' this should be sorted....which incidentally is how I got to this form!

Brilliant driving position = safe driving. In bad weather can get in quickly with the grandchildren through the side doors. Plenty of room inside. Fuel consumption is acceptable.

written by topinky on 05/12/2006

I never wanted a Kia but was in a bad car situation and so had no other options. I got stuck in this Kia with extremely high interest, but since the Kia depreciates so much, I am now stuck in a junk of a van and owe over twice the value. Again, it does ride nice and I haven't actually had it break down on me ever, but it is the other things that are continuously going wrong. I can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars in this van when all these tiny things keep going wrong due to bad craftsmanship. Now every week it is something else. I know cars have things wrong with them, but the DOORS FALLING OFF!!! Who makes a car where the doors will both fall off??? Enough said, I am looking to get rid of this van as quickly as possible.

★★★★★

written by cyprio124 on 07/08/2006

So far the Kia Sedona 2.9 SX TDI has proved great value for money. Its roomy enough for our camping trips, good on fuel and comfortable to drive. The local Kia dealers has been helpful with any questions and the first services past without pain. The only gripe I have is the paintwork is very thin and not resistant to our feathered friends droppings as I discovered when one made use of my bonnet and it went through to the primer. Kia dealer said it would not be covered by warranty but would touch it up for free but it didn't look any good so we are contacting Kia UK to see what they have to say. I've spoken to a car painter with 45 years experience who said it should not have gone through like that so we shall see what Kia has to say.

written by jcf on 28/07/2006

Love our Kia Sedona 2.9 SX TDI is pleasure to drive, good visibility, lots of room in cabin, well kitted out, good vfm. We both have bad backs and the drivers seat moves in so many directions it is easy to travel in comfort, especially on long journeys. Economical, Versatile - back seats were removed when we bought it to make way for dog cage, middle row taken in and out when required for holidays with dogs. Air conditioner doesn't work well and we had to have £1500 of replacement pipes, fortunately under warranty, but air con never worked reliably since we bought the car.

written by kkc on 14/05/2006

Clocked 38.000 miles since last August and not a single problem, I have purchased a 2001 Kia Sedona 2.9 SX TDI Auto model with a practical rear bench seat instead of 2002 onwards split seat model simply because of split seat later model is unpractical (awful is the true word) for the job I am doing,(I am a taxi driver).I avoid KIA service and dealership and use my own mechanic as the vehicle is serviced (oil/filter change) once every 6 weeks. Apart from the usual engine service, belt and brake pads etc. replacement I have not had a single problem and engine running beautifully, gearbox is fine only major problem is the build quality in terms of seats begining to show signs of wear and tear and a couple of seats will need repairs and restitching. So probably it is best to buy a leather interior Exec/SE version.

The Kia Sedona 2.9SX TDi is smooth, and it makes a bumpy ride seem calm. To those who say it's not good, they need to try it again. Despite the bad points this car is the best ever, and I ride in it all the time. It's so spacious and easy to clean, and it runs like a dream round corners. It looks good and is a head turner, and the fact that you can fit 7 people in it is lovely for a good night out.

written by taffytoo on 11/09/2005

Kia fixed our car under warranty we paid nothing for that but it took a month with no assistance at all (no courtsey car nothing).
So we bought another car couldn't wait a month or so. Had the car back after a few days the central locking wouldn't work, took it back to Kia it took yet another day as the key fobs YES 2 fobs were supplied with this car and Kia reprogrammed the key fob and said the other would not programme and this model only came with one key fob even though the two were in front of them. After that we went to the second hand deelers at Kia at Griffin Mills asked what they would offer for it. They offered a lot less than we wanted but we had a good deal as we got rid of it at a loss but good riddance. I'll never have a Kia ever again had I seen the reviews in the beginning I would never have bought a Kia in the first place.

“Ok, I have had our Sedona now for a little over eight...”

★★★☆☆

written by markandshez on 22/06/2005

Ok, I have had our Sedona now for a little over eight months and have 25k miles on the clock. On the whole, no major complaints about the car itself. Kia service, however is a disgrace. The 10k service came and went, not a single "niggle" was put right (tension slack in seatbelt, groaning from steering) The brakes were "renewed" but three months later needed doing again, AND the discs needed replacing AND both front tyres - you tell me. The car was broken into - insurance job for paintwork, valet (lots of blood when the little swine broke two windows) courtesy car. They got me to sign a form for a new picanto - then gave me a 1992 Datsun Sunny. Only half the paintwork was done - and no valet - Took three months to get a replacement radio.

Complaints with the car itself? - no centre console - A MAJOR drawback (they fit them as standard in the US, but not over here). The lack of space in the back is a drawback if the seats are in and, in all honesty, I have given up trying to get the seats out!

★★★★★

written by donktg on 14/03/2005

We've had our Kia Sedona SX TDI People Carrier for almost 3 years. It has about 35,000 miles. It has been very reliable. We like the interior, including the radio, AC, heat, comfy seats, lots of cargo room, removeable 2nd and 3rd rows, etc.
The only problem we've had is that the air bag/seat belt light has come on and we had to take it into KIA garage to get it fixed. They say it is a faulty sensor - but it has happend 3 times! Oh well... the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty covers the entire cost. That's the best part of the Sedona - worry free warranty for 5 years or 60,000 miles!

“I had been very impressed with the Sedona until I ran...”

★★☆☆☆

written by davealex49 on 04/03/2005

I had been very impressed with the Sedona until I ran into problems two months after the warrantee ran out.
The engine head had twisted and needed skimming. I believe the problem had been caused by a Kia dealership who worked on the engine to solve a problem whilst it was under warrantee. Either way round the Engine was incorrectly re-assembled or the engine is not reliable past 42,000 miles!

I had the car repaired, as I needed it in a hurry at the cost of £622. Kia then refused to help in any way, as I had not used a Kia dealership!

Prior to this I would have considered buying a Kia again. But certainly not now, polite letters telling me I am a valuable customer and thanking me for my feedback do not instil confidence or help my bank balance.

Yes its funny how Kia's go wrong just out of warranty, my rear heater pipes went, they are not a 'mechanical part' or a 'body corrosion part'

The car failed an MOT with a worn sterring rack at 41000 mles, and this is not the only car I have heard of with this problems, Kia Suggest 'under inflated tyres', this was not the case as I actually check mine, along with the oil, water etc at least once a week,

Oh and the rear brake pipes are also corroded, something I am astounded at, bearing in mind the age and milage of the vehicle.

Parts are ridiculously expensive (mercedes V clas parts are cheaper!) but I now buy pattern oil filters (Yes Kia, I change my own oil now and twice as often as you recommend)and i'll have my sterring rack reconditioned rather than pay my local uncaring dealer.

“I have had my Kia Sedona SE for nearly two years....”

written by Taffy too on 01/01/2005

I have had my Kia Sedona SE for nearly two years. Until now I have been very happy with it. My Kia has just started breaking down, it has been in the garage for days because it is unsafe to drive. The Kia garage has told me that the diesel is contaminated or I must have put petrol in instead. I certainly have not put petrol in it. They estimate the repair cost to be around £3000 and the warranty will not cover it. This is still ongoing anyone with similar problems please reply.

I have now had the work done, costing over £3000! My solicitor is in the process of writing for the 2nd time to Kia with evidence from filling stations with proof of diesel fills, not petrol. As of yet Kia is not responding. If we get no reponse, we will be using the small claims court to try to sue for costs. This is not expensive and my solictor feels there is a very good chance. Don`t give up. Can give you solicitor (totally reliable) contact details if you require.

Foggy123's Response to Taffy too's Review

Written on: 28/02/2006

It all sounds so familiar, sadly....
I have a Sedona, only 35,000 miles and my fuel pump imploded. The usual asking price of £3,000 was the bill of repair. Look at the "sale of goods act" 1973; this makes the seller responsible for the goods that are like mine, out of warranty. Also check if you have finance on the vehicle as the bank or lender will be interested in who is responsible for the car if in a state of disrepair. I have placed the problem firmly in the hands of the dealer and I expect the law to work in my favor. Should this not be the case, I will fight tooth and nail through every court in the land if necessary to gain a satisfactory result and rid the unfortunate public of the failing fuel pumps, broken systems, poor service, shoddy workmanship, inappropriate parts and a general lack of problem solving abilities by a large Corporation. There is quite clearly a problem with this product, Kia should do a recall of all faulty or potentially troublesome vehicles and own to their responsibilities, remember all, we do have rights!!! I have no hesitation whatsoever to go through the legal system and take to task an organisation of this size; a local upvc company attempted the "I’ll rip this bloke off" routine and after a long and tiresome grind of going to court, won my case. It’s time to stand together, make a noise and do not be fobbed off. My next phone call if I do not receive a satisfactory result will be to good old Nicky Campbell at Watchdog, Good luck all with your quest.

Hi just to let every body know my pump has also stop working yes I have been told the same £3000 to fix. But I was told to phone Kia customer service 0800 775777 so I did they are going to pay about 50% of the bill about £1500 as a good will gesture. I paid £9500 for the car I’ve only done 2550 miles with this car, which is 02 year just out of warranty 36000 mile only. And Delphi should foot the bill.
I contacted Kia Customer Services for a good will gesture with no reply, my milage is 57500, i agree that there is power in numbers and feel that we should join forces to establish that a fault exists and compensation paid.

I have been a mechanic now for 5 years and have seen this problem a number of times. I replaced the diesel pump on the same car 3 times while it was under warranty, the owner got rid of the car after the 3rd time. I have been led to believe that Kia only offer a 60,000 mile warranty now instead of the unlimited mileage one they used to soley because of this expensive problem. This is something to seriously consider if you are thinking of buying a Sedona as this can cost up to £3500 to repair.

Diesel owners BEWARE!!! I have had my Kia Sedona SX TDI People Carrier 2.5 years. Up to now I have been pleased. The disel engine is powerful and tows a caravan plus all the kit and 5 passengers.
However, it broke down. It was towed to a dealer under Kia care. They took it to a diesel specialist and claim it has petrol contamination. I have proof that I filled it with diesel. They want £2,500 to fix it. Not covered by warranty. On going!!! Diesel owners Beware !!!

Well taffyboyo your not alone as I am currently without my kia it is being held at a kia dealer where I have been told that is unsafe to drive as the diesel is contaminated according to them. It is now under investigation. Approx cost £3000. Is this a problem that all kia s in their second to third year encounter. I am not at all happy and refuse to pay for this as it is still under warrenty.

I have a kia sedona 04 diesel, took to Kia dealers because it would not start. It has 23,000 miles on the clock. They told me it was fuel contamination and the bill would be £5400 to sort out. There is a problem with the fuel pumps and they are making excuses saying that it is fuel contamination. These cars engines are designed by Mercedes, but have high pressure faulty delfhi fuel pumps, which are fragile. We dont need excuses, we want answers.

I have a Kia sedona 2.9 crdi LE, 05 reg. I too have had a problem with fuel contamination, in my case they said it was water in diesel fuel, caused by using a diesel retailer who allows their tanks to get too empty and thus sucking up water into the tank. My insurance company have just agreed to pay for the £3,000 repairs after a lengthy 31 days arguing with KIA, surely now KIA must do something about their DELPHI fuel systems, if there is at least three of us here who have all had the same problem with our diesel Sedona's, or at least change their Warranty Policy. If they state unlimited Warranty, they should do it. I am very unhappy with KIA and plan to go on to as many review sites for cars as I can and highlight this problem, i suggest we all do the same, at least we can make other prople aware of the potential problems before spending £16,000 then another £3,000 on repairs.

written by 310396 on 18/09/2004

I had a 3 year old Kia Sedona Exec People Carrier(top of the range). The backward facing seats drew my attention and in fact proved to be great. It also was very economical and a pleasure on long motorway drives.

In a short period I had to replace a power steering pump, battery, alternator and fuel pump. The final straw came when a headlamp bulb went and was going to cost £200 to replace due to it being a sealed beam unit. This on top of an imminent cam belt change, service and a/c re-gas would have meant a garage bill of well over £1000 just to keep the thing on the road. New and under warranty they are probably ok but secondhand this was a money pit.
