“AVOID dreadful service and waste of money”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ruthmur98 on 15/05/2020

These policies amount to a huge amount of money over time. When a machine has a fatal fault the policy should provide a like for like replacement and in the case of appliances these should be fitted. Today I had a replacement dishwasher left on my doorstep by an unhelpful delivery driver who refused to enter my property or to remove the old machine even though I had paid more for this service. The fact they wouldn’t install the replacement and I was not told this or given an option to arrange this has caused huge anxiety. I have paid over ££800 in premiums for a cheap and nasty machine worth less than £200. Never mind the fact that I now have to find a plumber and arrange removal at my own cost. What a total waste of money. Customer services are unhelpful and passed me from pillar to post.save your money

“RELAX,GOT YOUR MONEY!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cooney196 on 28/03/2020

Total waste of money having this insurance. Called on the 16/3/20 main bearings gone on washing machine,Hotpoint given work calling on the 20/3/20 not bad I think Hotpoint called 19/3/20 cancelled till 6/4/20 (Will not ever buy Hotpoint again) Called back to domestic and General given a number of another firm repair care (Part of D&G ) wasted a total of 70 minutes try to contact them. Rang back to D&G on the 23/3/20 who put me straight through to repair care, told them what was required they would sub it to a local firm on the 25/3/20,looking good I think. Man comes out after lunch on the 25/3/20 he is with us 2 minutes, confirms what I have told them, but they do not have the parts and with the lock-down may not get them. Ring back D&G ,lady will ring me back within 15 minutes,an hour later still no phone call, ring them back again, explain it all over again, not interested Had to buy another washing machine So do not waste your money on them(cost this year £152.64)

“Beware - Not All Costs Are Covered!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by LKissack on 29/11/2019

Having had an integrated washer dryer insured for over 6 years at a total cost of over £1,200 in payments it was written off when parts became obsolete. D&G ordered me a replacement machine (value less than £400) but refused to install it. They also refused to remove the old machine, despite me having paid a fee for them to do so. I’ve subsequently spent £75 to have a machine installed which was supposedly fully insured!

“Domestic & General maintenance contract not to be trusted”

★☆☆☆☆

written by sdmhouse on 24/09/2019

Even though the maintenance contract covered the controls as well as the boiler they refused to repair or replace the controls. This company is not to be trusted on a full maintenance contract.

“Misleading mis-selling misery”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Wodehouse051 on 01/07/2019

My bush fridge/freezer became faulty so I took out a policy with Domestic and general to cover repair costs. The policy stated that if their engineers couldn't repair the fault then I would be entitled to a replacement appliance. 3 engineers visited and failed to repair the F/F. When I contacted D&G they simply cancelled my policy with no explanation and left me high and dry. Please learn from my experience and keep away from these seedy little opportunists. Other reviewers clearly think like me and if I can persuade anyone else to avoid being mis-sold policies by these people then I will be well satisfied.

“Disorganised. Avoid at all costs.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JaidaMcIntyre on 01/05/2019

I bought insurance cover for an old washing machine that was already broken. When I called D&G i made it very clear I knew it was broken, knew the issue was with the bearings, told them the name and model of my machine and said i knew it was unlikely to be repairable, but the woman on the phone line told me "I could not lose" as if they couldn't repair it, it would be replaced. I paid £200 for cover being told that it would include the visit and either repair or replacement. I knew the issue was with the bearings but they had to send someone and couldn't do a video call as others are starting to do. She also said that she was unable to check when the next appointment was available before i made the purchase - how convenient! The next appointment was 3 weeks away and had to be daytime so I had to take an unpaid day off work. The Hotpoint guy turned up as promised and was great, but it took 3 minutes to tell me that the bearings had failed, the machine was too old to be repaired cost-effectively (although the parts were available they were "too expensive to bother". He said D&G would call me within 48-72 hours about my replacement. They didn't call so a week later, I finally called them to be told that as this was in the first 30 days of the policy they won't replace it and "I at least benefitted from a free engineers visit." So all in all they get you to sign up, time the first visit to be after the 14-day cancellation period, tell stories about getting in touch and then you realise you've paid £200 for nothing. Do yourselves a favour and avoid.

“Appalling service in Ashford”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McPhersondt46 on 01/04/2019

Booked call with Domestic and General for my appliance repair, they appointed Kent Appliances from Gillingham, three failed appointments, still no fix, called again and this time told me my machine was rubbish and I can have a new one as they don't have to repair but also admitted he new nothing about my machine no answer on their phone, told me they had called last time yet could not describe my house, does Domestic and general not care about quality of service, have now booked with another repairer as I am happy with my machine as it is only 18 months old, I will cancel policy.

“Very poor service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jameswalsh86 on 14/02/2019

Cancelled my policy around September 2017, only £3.50 per month so never noticed it going out of my account. Recently spotted this and called them, they couldn't find a record of the cancellation call (perhaps why it was not actioned as supposed to be) so they could not refund me. Generally unhelpful, only a small amount of money (£50 in total) so not worth me pursuing further of going on via the ombudsman, but just recommend that others steer clear. Seems from the reviews that many others have similar experiences.

I have the miisfortune to have a policy with this lot on washer/dryer yet trying to get a repair is a joke, two days on & off calling for a repair, eventually get through to be told even though your policy is D&G you have to call AEG, what??? They also deliberately keep you on hold for ages on a premium rate number & should someone pick up they deliberately cut you off so you pay again & again!!!! AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

“Avoid them at all costs!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 266McKenzie on 27/08/2018

After I cancelled my boiler protection policy with Domestic & General they demanded payment for repairs to a boiler I have never owned. They also managed to send their demand to the wrong address, (my neighbour passed it to me.) After telephoning their recovery agency and waiting on hold for 1 hour and 45 minutes I was hung up on before speaking to anyone. I then telephoned the D&G outfit directly. Explained that the policy was taken out with the caveat that a severely disabled child was present in the home and heating was a must so I would expect, in line with my utility providers to be treated as a priority due to the circumstances. Repairs to my actual boiler - not the one they are claiming to have repaired which obviously belongs to another one of their unfortunate victims - were never prioritised and never successful and were carried out when I was paying for the policy. On contacting them to have repairs prioritised as previously agreed - it never happened. The child in question has severe mobility issues and that was made crystal clear on taking out the policy obviously all they could see were £ signs! I was continually passed 'Resolution' Centre who resolved nothing and brought nothing forward. Disability Discrimination is obviously an alien concept to them. An offer to pay for the electricity bills I had run up trying to keep the home warm? Not likely. Forget about being reimbursed for the cost of the telephone calls waiting on hold for what felt like forever. What they can do is take your money. What they won't do is provide a named person to write a formal complaint to. If I could actiually afford it I would happily take legal action even if it cost more the amount they are demanding from me. It has come down to the principles now.

“beware renewal”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 13/08/2018

Received 'free' protection with new build house for white goods which had to be activated with DD details. On expiry 'phoned as per its instructions to cancel. Queried if needed to be in writing. Told no. Year on discover funds taken. Three letters from me (1st reply suggesting I moved, second I had sold/scrapped item) claim no knowledge of cancellation. Suggest people cancel in writing and keep copies to avaoid similar experience.

“**Avoid** Very poor service”

written by TopgunThomas on 13/06/2018

Our dishwasher was covered under the D&G three items insurance. I rang the call centre who took all details including the make and model. An engineer arrived and said he couldn't do anything as it was a Bush model bought at Argos!!!!.I then contacted D&G again who agreed to send an engineer who could deal with this model. They said to ring the company and a time would be given. The company could not provide a time and so we had no idea when or if an engineer was going to turn up. I again contacted D&G and asked to speak to a supervisor who took 20 mins to come to the phone. He could do nothing but offer an apology.Avoid this company at all costs they have very poor customer service and they need to review and upgrade their sub contracted repair companies ASAP

“There when not needed. Gone when needed”

★☆☆☆☆

written by csmilie1234 on 27/04/2018

Life time policies cancelled as soon as product develops problems Lied to when policies taken out. Unsatisfactory repairs which constantly fail to solve problem and then told life time policy cancelled as product is now too old. Have cancelled ALL my policies with D and G as could have replaced all items 5 times over with money spent and have been left with broken items and cancelled policies. Bad value for money.

“Don't waste your money buying of Domestic & General”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Terranco2000 on 19/04/2018

Don't waste your money buying of Domestic & General....I purchased a Belling Cooker ref BEL FS50EFDO just over 12 months ago, just before the warranty was up the hob plate went on it, as I was still in warranty i had it repaired for free, which was fine, I was then talked in to buying an extended warranty. On friday 13th April the oven packed in and not thinking they would be open I rang Domestic & General on Monday 16th April where an appointment was made for them to come out on the 19th April, I've now been told that they don't have the part and it's going to be the 4th May till the part can come in, if they come in that is, there was NO GUARANTEE given. I complained to Domestic & General about the length of time it's going to take and that my housemates and I use the oven every day, the response I had was "Oh dear, that's not good, well if it goes over that time then we will look in to it again"... Total waste of time taking this insurance out. I now have to go to the added expense of buying a new cooker. I have to say I found the complaints department bloody rude and very unhelpful. Very quick and nice when there taking your money... not so nice when you have a problem...  I took this insurance out to cut out stress, NOT give me even more.

“Good service but. Who are the other D&G trying to sell...”

★★★★☆

written by RolandWhittaker393 on 01/04/2018

As stated over the past 6 years I have had good service when required for my washing machine. A little pricey as the increases are added over the years though. MY CONCERN! Recently contacted by a contact suggesting he represented D&G and could offer me a much better offer for the same cover, requested conformation of credit card details and provided a contact number. I advised that no agreement or action would take place by me over the telephone! Noted the contact number and advised Domestic & General. Was this a sham and how did they obtain my information??

“Terrible company”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Blaircd325 on 23/12/2017

I have had a range of problems getting my washing machine fixed. Assistants have no customer care. Engineers arrive I'll informed and not with correct parts to carry out repairs. Managers do not ring you back. They lie about what they will do and then change times and there is no consistency in the communication they have. Avoid at all costs

Where it came from?...Mars People need to be carefull and not fall on this company, Especially if you buy anything from AO they try to sell this useless insurance policy

“Incompetent Boiler Repairs”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/12/2017

I have been insured with Domestic & General since my boiler was new about 10 years ago. I have had numerous visits from their engineers since then and a new problem seemed to be diagnosed each time and they never seemed to know exactly what was wrong. I had another repair visit last week and discovered there was a leak of carbon monoxide. the previous visit was only 3 months ago when I was told the boiler problems were fixed so I have no idea how long the emissions were going on. fortunately I attended A&E to get checked and was ok. I have been told my complaints would be escalated but have had no response at all. I have contacted Trading Standards and environmental health as I am extremely concerned about allowing them back to fix the boiler again as I consider they have been incompetent and negligent. I would advise anyone to go elsewhere for boiler insurance.

First of all If you have taken out the insurance with D&G you have entered a contract and as such you must end the contract according to the terms of the contract. I know its in small print but you must read how to end the contract In my case I telephoned their customer services (which took ages to speak to someone) and told them I was ending the contract, following that I wrote a letter to them (stating the time and date I telephoned them and stated that this was written conformation of cancellation), at the address provided so I had a paper copy of my communication. This gives you the confidence that should you find that you are still being charged by D&G, then you have written documented proof to allow you to claim back any monies which they have charged. Hope this helps.

I have a Domestic and General warranty. My freexer broke down nearly 3 weeks ago. The engineer says it needs new parts. Two weeks and still no part. They are saying they are having a problem, as it is coming from Turkey. Where do I stand?

Hi, very basically check your insurance documents to see what you are covered for. Most, if they can not repair it within a reasonable amount of time then you are entitled to get it replaced. As I say. Check the documents. 3 weeks however for a fridge freezer to be repaired is not a reasonable amount of time. Hope this helps.
Report this content jimmypunter Written on: 14/07/2014
They are offering to get it fixed but to wait that amount of time seems a bit much. You need a fridge in this weather and at all other times. My BEKO fridge was made in Turkey but you'd think there would be spares in the UK for it. With DHL and the like delivery from Turkey can be done in days, not weeks. I'd call them and put all that to them, regards, JIM

If you are covered to have a replacement in the event that they can't repair it, stand your ground and demand a new freezer, don't let them mess you about and if you don't get what you are entitled to, escalate the problem to the top. The claims department will do all they can to get out of giving you a replacement. I just found this email addy In my list of emails back and forth to D&G, if the claims department don't help you contact the customer care team.

I would agree with others check the contract ,then in my experience don't give in to the sales rubbish they give you.I had a similar experience and it took 3 weeks and I eventually got a new fridge freezer. Then don't fall into the trap of continuing the insurance on the new fridge freezer. average life expectancy should be more than 5 years, by the time you pay 5 years worth of insurance you have paid a lot more than a new unit. They are a shower, the service is terrible, the staff often are arrogant .They are not value for money. better to put a small sum away and if it should go wrong you can immediately get a new fridge freezer. when you claim from this mob it takes weeks to get it resolved its not about service with them its how cheap they can get a replacement, service to the customer takes second place.
