“Exactly As Advertised”

★★★★★

written by kbschendel on 02/03/2013

We wanted a small campervan for touring and didn't want to spend a fortune. Lucky fit the bill and our experience was very positive. Keep in mind that part of the reason Lucky can keep prices low is that their vans are old. "Stuff" can happen to old cars. (New cars too, but not as often.) If that's not for you then look elsewhere (and pay much more). Fortunately we didn't have any problems at all with our van with some 345,000 km on it. Pickup in Auckland was fine, if a bit slow ... they were very busy that day. The van itself (the small one, a Crib) was a bit tired and creaky but ran fine. The only real flaw (and one we missed at pickup) was that the headlight lenses were dirty on the inside, making night driving harder than it needed to be. We hadn't planned much night driving anyway. The van ran fine and we put nearly 2000 km on it. The outfitting was fine; the cushions were clean if a bit old and stained (which is NOT the same thing as being dirty). One tip: bring a light sleeping bag and use it as a blanket, so that you can put the supplied duvet underneath you. The extra bit of padding makes a big difference. We drove the car fairly enthusiastically and the drive train and handling were fine. Drop-off in Christchurch was excellent. The staff there was very helpful and got us to the airport in time for a tight connection. A previous reviewer complaining about the staff must have been dealing with someone else. The staff also resolved a problem (serious rock damage to the windscreen that happened on the last day) very quickly and at much less expense than we had feared. If you want a shiny new campervan, pay more and go elsewhere. If you want to save money and don't mind a few creaks and stains on the carpet, Lucky should be your choice.

“UN-Lucky Rentals / horrible service + bad product”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jdevroome on 27/02/2013

We rented a Lucky Cruiza in January of 2013 for 5 weeks. The pickup of the campervan was a pain. It took us half a day to get out of the office in Christchurch where we had to collect our own crockery, homewares, pots & pans etc from a dingy shed. The staff at the office was unprofessional, rude, inconsiderate and inhospitable. The campervans itself are all old Jucy vans. This means the set-up and layout of the campervan is OK, but they are not properly cleaned or maintained by Lucky. Aside from being dirty and having damages all over, some of the issues we had was a table that could not be set up in a stable way, front doors that did not close properly and bed panels that did not fit. We offered Lucky plenty of time and options to make amends; but basically we just had to deal with what we got. This is the product and service they provide because they are / claim to be the cheapest rental option in NZ. Cheap does not mean a broken, damaged and dirty product with rude service. There are a lot of rental companies in NZ; this one does not deserve your business. Spend your hard earned cash elsewhere.

“Lucky Rentals - UnLucky Rentals”

★☆☆☆☆

written by UnLuckyCamper on 25/02/2013

Lucky Rentals provided the worst van hire experience of my life, they closed at 4pm before we got there to pick up our van despite us having booked a late check out (5.30pm!) and paying a $60 fee. All emergency contacts for them went to a message machine so we were forced to book a hotel for the evening, travel by taxi with our bags etc, huge pain and $250 (Accommodation in Christchurch is very difficult to get). We contacted Lucky Rentals via email that evening and they denied that we had booked a late pickup (despite it being in writing on our booking form and having the receipt for the $60 fee). They said the van would be waiting in the morning at their yard (another taxi across town). When we arrived the next morning at 9.30 am they had given our van away to another renter!!! We then had to sit in their office for 7 hours waiting for another van to be returned; no apology, no offer of help with alternate arrangments, nothing, they did not even offer us a cup of tea or anything despite us sitting there all day. I wasted 10% of my holiday sitting on the floor of their dirty office! When we finally got a van it was dirty, leaked exhaust fumes, had inadequate bedding and cooking equipment, the doors did not open from the inside, bald tyres and dodgy brakes, it was simply not safe. Suffice to say I would warn against hiring a vehicle from these people under any circumstance. We payed $140 a day for this low standard of dirty van and appalling service, wasted a entire day of our holiday waiting and a bunch of money, should be called UnLucky Rentals.

“Best way to see New Zealand!”

★★★★★

written by jslade on 24/10/2012

Lucky rentals was awesome! Cant say enough about the staff or the equipment. The whole experience was way more then I expected seeing as though Lucky targets the backpacking and budget traveler market. With their fully self-contained campers you have the ability to see the country your way instead of being locked into the tour bus system or public transportation routes. The camper had everything I needed and more. I was definitely stoked to have the raised ceiling van which was compact for driving but had enough headroom for the rainy days that had me spending most of the day in the camper cooking and waiting out the rain. You seriously get everything you need with these vans and you cant beat the price!

“We got what we were promised!”

★★★★★

written by jenna-matthews on 06/09/2012

We were very happy with our Lucky Rentals van. We did our research and knew that they were not offering brand new vans, but we were pleasantly surprised with the friendly, informative staff and the value for money. Also the fact that we got a diesel van saved us heaps of money. We didn't have to buy anything extra for the van, all the basic living things were there, so we were able to spend all of our extra money on activities. Do not rent from Lucky if you want pure luxury and a brand new van, rent from them so you can get a backpacker van at super-cheap backpacker prices, and go have fun in New Zealand!

“Very Good”

We did a couple of weeks around the Southern Island of New Zealand. The van its self was basic yes but the price was excellent. We had the Cruiza the only bad point is you cook outside which is fine but not when it rains. We had so much fun in our van. Recommend to everyone!

“The staff in Christchurch were fantastic, they took...”

★★★★★

written by DanStevens on 14/08/2012

The staff in Christchurch were fantastic, they took the time to help me with my plans and gave me a huge amount of information about what was best to see and do. They were really helpful and friendly, and being that one of them was a backpacker who was just working for a couple of months, they knew what they were talking about. The van was basic (I knew it was older from the advertisements so wasn't expecting much) but it worked, it started every day and drove fine (not very fast on some of New Zealands big hills!) and everything was in the van. The bedding could have been a little thicker (there were some cold nights) but otherwise it was clean and worked. I will use them again next time, but I would also ask for a heater or maybe another blanket!! Thanks Guys! Dan.

“Cheapest rates around and value for money”

★★★★☆

written by MrRobC on 14/08/2012

Took a holiday around NZ in April 2012 and these guys had the best rates around so I decided to book with them. I understand they had just replaced a whole lot of campers (that is what they told me) so the vehicle I got was perfect. Easy to drive (auto) and a good amount of storage. It was better than expected considering how little it cost me - cheaper than a car! See you guys next time I am over and I will be spreading the word. Cheers.

“Not So Lucky”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/04/2012

March 2012 We arranged by phone and email for an afterhours pickup. We were told on the phone and in email that the keys would be in the key safe on the outside wall. They were not, and we spent the night in the Rennie Drive car park. The van had been left open. We lost our money on a camping site for that night. There were no maps or route planners in the vehicle as promised. Staff claimed not to have been told about the communication with us about the keys. We were told over the phone by you it was a $20 taxi ride from Auckland airport to Lucky's Rennie Drive depot. The taxis actually have a $37 fixed price for this. We were given a single person duvet for the 2 of us. One of the 2 pillows was so thin you could see through it. One of the cushion panels that help make up the double bed was missing The towels smelt like they had not been washed properly ==> we got new bedding and the missing cushion panel before we left The crockery was absolutely filthy. It was grey with dirt and grime. Some of the crockery was wet, as was the rusting saucepan. Mugs that were unusable with cracks and chips The toaster had a spoon stuck it its element. ==> we got replacement crockery etc before we left, but one of the new saucepans was cracked half way down the side and had a lid that did not fit. The rest of the van was filthy. The glove box, map holders on doors, behind and under seats had paper, old receipts, used cotton buds, tourist pamphlets, hair clips and dirt, dirt and more dirt. The red screens were filthy with dirt and grime. The tailgate had mouldy dirt on the inside. The front floors were clean, but very slimy and slippery with cleaning material The sink overflow pipe was not connected The sink water pump seal leaks, and we had water running about when we used it The gas bottle had just 3 cups of coffee worth of gas left. The fridge had not been cleaned, and stank It took us ages to find the switches for the heater and microwave The white panel behind the passenger seat is broken. The tailgate mirror ball joint was broken, so the mirror flopped about. It blew off on a gusty day. The van had a windscreen service sticker saying it was due for a service July last year The passenger side vent was broken. The centre console is broken Internal light covers are broken The cooking and LPG safety stickers were unreadable. The windscreen had 4 star cracks No driver manual to help with the basics: fluid checks etc. We camped next to 2 other Lucky vans in our travels, and they had similar stories. * an English couple absolutely devastated after planning for two years for the trip, only to get a van in a disgusting state. *an Australian couple with bald tires that had to be replaced, canvas showing through. We chose a budget van, but expected that: it would be clean working functional safe and that we would get what was offered in advertising. We don't feel lucky to have used Lucky Rentals, and are making that clear to those we talk to about our experience in NZ. BUT, NZ is fantastic and we will be back. We found a campervan ideal for what we did and the way we travelled.

“bad old cars and bad customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by rakild on 25/01/2012

I just wrote a long detailed description of my experience of how bad the cars from Lucky rentals are and how bad the customer service is. Unfortunately I erased it, and I don't want to write it sll again, but I can just say that I will never recommend the company to anyone. Only good thing is that it's cheaper than any other company, but there is no doubt that, if I should do the holiday again, I would rather pay more for a car that actually works well in another company than another one of Lucky's old cars. And I'm not one of those who complain about everything - actually I have never done a review like this before. In this case I just think that Lucky rentals was so bad that I have to strongly recommend people to find another company.

I had the same experience. I understand they have older vehicles, in fact they don't hide the fact, they advertise it. The issue I had was I was given a vehicle that had bald tires (safety issue), a refrigerator that did not work, and varous other issues. When I returned the vehicle the staff replaced it but that vehicle had problems too. They do have a "check off" list but it doesn't appear they actually use it other than just filling the blanks. Every vehicle I picked up has different problems and missing inventory. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Great value campervan (cheaper than anything else I could find) that got me around the New Zealand. Basic but have everything we needed - double bed, sink, water, blankets, cooking gear, fridge and gas cooker. Saved heaps of cash so I could spend it on activities in Queenstown. I would reccommend it if you are on a budget.

Where do I start? I wish I would have read the reviews prior to my renting a campervan from Lucky. I see why they call it Lucky Rentals....you're lucky if anything works. Let me start from the beginning. The office staff is extremely hard to get in touch with. If you call, you will likely get a phone message (with no return phone call).
When I originally researched campervans in NZ, all I wanted was a simple unit with an automatic that had a few essentials such as a refrigerator, cook stove, crockery, bedding, etc. I arrived at Lucky late in the afternoon. The office (Auckland) looked dirty and rundown and this should have been the first clue. After an inspection of the vehicle and a review of the inspection sheet signed by their staff, I was ready to be on my way. I did notice a moldy smell from the refrigerator and was told that once I started driving, it would go away. I stopped to get groceries and when I opened the refrigerator the most foul moldy smell came out. I bought disinfectant and proceeded to scrub the inside of the fridge. The smell did not go away. I then bought a cold bag and ice to store my groceries for the night as Lucky Rentals had closed for the day.
The next morning, I decided to really look around the van. What I found was disturbing! The front 2 tires were bald on the outside portion (bad alignment), the fridge did not work, the radio speakers were blown, the fresh water tank leaked (upon review, this had been repaired by Lucky with electrical tape, not a hose clamp). Okay, I had enough. I took it back and the staff exchanged the vehicle. One of the staff told me the reason the refrigerator smelled was because it wasn't working. He was also shocked that the vehicle was sent out with bald tires. The second vehicle had it's own set of problems. I decided I did not want to return to Auckland again as I wanted to enjoy my trip. I returned it after I had a small accident in New Plymouth. The third vehicle was the best vehicle I received. The only thing missing was cutting knives and a few other items.
Overall, it's clear you're not renting a new vehicle. I understand that. After all, they tell you the vehicles are 2000-2003. What I don't see is office staff at Auckland taking the time to ensure your vehicle is safe and has everything working. What's ironic is they give you a checklist that shows the vehicle has been inspected. What is clear is they don't truly inspect it, they just check the list. The first vehicle had a notation regarding one of the bald tires and the notation was scratched off and initialed by another employee. I would think after the first vehicle came back, they would make sure the second vehicle was ready to go. What I did see in my three visits, was an office staff so casual that it appeared to be normal that vehicles were not ready to go or had safety issues such as bald tires, etc. In fact, they didn't seem surprised that the vehicle was coming back. It was like, "oh, okay, here's another one".
I would never (and I mean never) recommend this company to anyone. They do not have their act together.

“Lucky Rentals claims to offer a camper van hire with...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/01/2011

Lucky Rentals claims to offer a camper van hire with built in kitchen and double bed. The realty is that the fit out is hand made of plywood, the fridge is an esky and the bed is really only big enough for one. All this in a ten year old Toyota Tarago (Emina) with poor fuel consumption and no rear or dash lights.

We needed to stay in a hotel every night to compensate. Be careful before you book a rental here.
