“No Money Received”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Gallowayma397 on 20/11/2022

On a Sunday morning my dog had weird bumps around his face so we contacted an online vet through vetsnow. After online consultation the vet told us that the dog has hives (allergic reaction). Because the allergic reaction was starting around his face there was potential that it could spread to the neck and block his airways which could result in my dog's death. The vet recommended that we get to emergency room as soon as possible for adrenaline shot which we did (confident that our insurer would cover the cost of this emergency). It took VetsMediCover one month to respond to us to say that they will not cover emergency vet fees because the condition was not life threatening. It is very disappointing that the company can simply make things up even though we had a professional medic advising us the contrary. Would not recommend to use the company.

“Extreme premium hikes after age 5”

★☆☆☆☆

written by None145 on 14/12/2018

Customer since 2011. Never claimed, excess always £90, first premium £336. Premium 2016 (age of pet 5}: £478 and 10% of vet fees out of own pocket. Premium 2017 and 2018: £635 and 20% of vet fees out of own pocket. Premium 2019: £890 and 20% of vet fees out of own pocket. Better cover in all areas available from LV at £840. Same cover available from Vetsmedicover for new customer at £735. As demonstrated above, premium hikes only occur once you are effectively locked in due to pet's age. I will be contacting Vetsmedicover to complain, as the hikes are not justified based on our no claim history (and they would make me pay £90 plus 20%!).

“So upset with VETSMEDICOVER !! ”

★★☆☆☆

written by MrsClaireS1982 on 23/07/2018

Coming to the end of my 12 month lifetime policy my dog suddenly got ill... this went on for 2 weeks and in this time my insurance policy renewed as it had done for 6 + years. I have never had any real issue with them until now. Because my dog sadly passed away at the beginning of the renewal, if I want any of my claims paid for (from the 2 weeks before his death) then I have to pay the whole yearly insurance upfront. Apparently it’s in the terms and conditions. So what it sounds like is, your pet can sadly pass away but it will have to be at the end of the 12 month policy otherwise you’ll have to pay the rest of the premium upfront if you have any vet fees or cancel the policy and pay the vet fees yourself. I cant help when my dog passes away and the trips to the vets prior to this. I think it’s absurd to ask me to pay the year up front, it is a RENEWAL, and it’s what I pay insurance for, to be covered if the unfortunate happens.

Recently had the need to speak to a vet at a weekend. Was delighted that the on call vet for Vets Medicover was available immediately and I was given complete reassurance about my Golden Retriever. Saved me immense worry and expense.

“I've been insuring Ben with them for 3 years. I always believe you find out how good the insurance company is when you claim and I can’t fault them. I've had to claim for two ulcers on his eyes, gum problems and on going arthritis. They even gave me a 5% discount at renewal and now my other dog is with them as well. Her previous ins wanted big premium and little cover.” q

“DO NOT USE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Smithlr451 on 05/01/2017

When your pet is over the age of 7 they keep hiking the insurance up to unaffordable prices so you cancel it. I regret deeply putting my pet with this company, he now will be uninsured as I cant afford the huge premium and due to his age cant go anywhere else. I have 3 cats with pet plan and one of which has had huge claims and the prices were not hiked up considerably. You pay more for petplan but they are very fair and the service is always fantastic. I wish I had never signed to vets medi cover. Also to add to this claims took over 4 weeks to pay out... shocking all round.

“No hassle insurance”

★★★★★

written by lucylu14 on 03/09/2016

Our rottweiler was hitting the older dog mark and some pet insurance won't even consider an older pedigree dog or the prices are too high. After research and looking at reviews for vetsmedicover, we went with them. Then we had bad luck with our otherwise healthy dog after only a few months insurance cover as unfortunately he went and did his cruciate ligament in. We were concerned how this would go as we have never had to make a claim before, but it was very smooth and stress free. We have peace of mind and when our dog's insurance cover comes up for renewal next year, we will very likely go with vetsmedicover.

written by Claudilla on 27/06/2016

My experience with this pet insurance has been excellent, from customer care to claims handling. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family. They contribute towards dental treatment, which is inevitable at some time in our pet's life, they also help with existing conditions if not treated over the last 2 years, which is also something most insurances don't cover. I would always recommend to choose a lifetime cover for your own peaces of mind.

“My cat is too old”

★★☆☆☆

written by llDay246 on 10/06/2016

I had used them for a year and I was informed that after a year of loyalty they would no longer be providing my cat with insurance, she is only 8 years old. I would never use them again.

Vetsmedicover's Comment

Written on: 14/06/2016

Hi,

So sorry to hear this! It is only possible with our annual policy, our three lifetime policies cover all pets every year at renewal. The insurance cannot be cancelled. We always state clearly that insurance is only available from 8 weeks to 8 years!

I hope that your cats are well and if your policy was lifetime and there has been a misunderstanding then please let me know.

All the best,

Team VMC

So sorry to hear you could not renew! 3 of our 4 policies are lifetime, so you can renew irrespective of age. Our one annual policy goes from 8 years to 8 years and cannot subsequently be renewed. We hope this is clear for all our customers and it must be so annoying to be in this position now... however, I know there are other insurers who do cover older pets so all is not lost. Sorry about this and please do call us for more information on what to do now.

“Appalling!!!!”

★★☆☆☆

written by Kelvinogborne on 22/04/2016

Last September I was informed by vets medicover that the insurers of my gsd were no longer doing pet insurance!! They found me an alternative insurer , but after reading the policy through found it a total waste of money!! Excess and policy limitations for current conditions made it a complete no no... When I first insured my dog with them it was a great policy!! However the premiums do increase quite considerably over the years.. Unfortunately as my dog has ongoing problems no other company will insure him and over the past few months I have incurred nearly £2g of treatment for him.. Words cannot describe how I feel about vets medicover.. Massively let down and out of pocket through taking there insurance... What starts off as good value soon gets recoiled in later yrs when they no you cannot insure with other companies.!!!!AVOID

So sorry you feel this way! It looks like you had a big claims last year, is that correct? Claims can sometimes push up the price of the premium. The policy we have does still offer great cover, have you been offered any cover. I hate to hear you're so disappointed. Have you spoken to our customer service team about this? Best regards to yourself and your pet.

Compared to a lot of dogs I train and train with no I wouldn't say it was a massive claim last year..
Dust mite allergy vacs, ears cleaned due to allergic reaction and zd special food which you only pay 20% up to £400 if I remember correctly!!
Without looking for the paperwork you sent which I've probably binned now I believe the renewal price was around £95 per month.. Excess was £80 and you would only pay 20% of existing conditions ?
Please correct me if I'm wrong..
And yes your so say customer service teams response was !! This is all we have to offer sorry

“Vets Medi cover”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/03/2016

My Boxer is 5 years old and during the first two years I would of recommended Vets Medi Cover. it started at £28 a month, last year £78 a month and I have just had the renewal at a whopping £139.32 a month. The original policy was for £10,000 worth of cover. They have now put a limit of £3000 for the conditions that we have previously claimed for. I rang Vets Medi Cover who were most unhelpful and unsympathetic Vets Medicover is the broker and the last two insurance companies have not continued with them, hence the higher prices. The underwriters are now QIC Europe Ltd. I Definately would not recommend VETS MEDICOVER!

Hi there, I'm so sorry to hear that we were unhelpful. When was the last time you spoke to someone in the office, is there nothing we can do? I think I'm correct in saying that most pet insurance companies are not the underwriter. We actually left the last two underwriters because they were trying to put the prices up so much and we wanted a better deal for our customers. Please do keep in touch as I know that my colleagues are doing everything that they can to help customers who have an increase in premium.

“Hike in price ”

written by Dillonuv47 on 20/11/2015

Going to the ombudsman with this company. Doubled premium due to change of underwriter and will only cover my dog for 3k for the rest of her life with the condition she has. Plus having to pay 20% of any claim. I took the cover out on the basis I would have 10k a year per condition. Taking this to the FOS and I will win. Shoddy service!

Just wanted to say that I notice from my bank statements that the claims for Lola have now been paid. Also, I wanted to thank you for the way you dealt with the slight hiccup with the claims which spanned the change of your underwriters, the way you dealt with it was friendly and really excellent customer service. “Misleading customers with "lifetime" cover”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Coyne77 on 12/10/2015

I cannot describe how angry I am with VetsMedicover. They should not be allowed to mislead their customers into thinking that they are taking out a lifetime policy for their beloved pets, when they know full well that the most you will get out of this company is 2 years. We took out a policy with VetsMedicover for our fist dog after being advised to take out a lifetime policy that would protect us in the eventuality that our dog got a chronic condition. As many responsible pet owners would agree, taking out these policies provides peace of mind that your pet is covered for any vets bills you may incur, so that you are not subject to unexpected bills., Since we took out the policy they have changed underwriter twice, and because we had no ongoing claims, everything was fine and our policy transfered over with the same terms. However, now that our dog is being investigated for seizures, and is most likely going to need treatment for epilepsy for life...... Guess what ? The new underwriters will not accept our dog without either excluding his condition, or charging us more that double the premium with only a third of the cover. A TOTAL JOKE. - If they sell life cover they should provide life cover regardless of the underwriter - if they know that they change underwriters this regularly, why do they continue to mislead customers that they are getting a life policy - They have a duty to be clear and transparent with their customers so that they are made aware, in a very CLEAR way that there is a risk that their life cover is probably not going to be any more than a couple of years - They need to stop comparing themselves to other insurance companies, as others may out prices up, but they do not mislead their customers into buying something that they know is not fit for purpose. - they also do not pay quickly at all as they claim to do I will pursue this for as long as I live until I get what I deserv serve for my dog, and ultimately what we paid for.........

Vetsmedicover's Comment

Written on: 19/10/2015

We are really sorry you feel this way and totally understand that the removal of your lifetime cover in this case is far from ideal. Let me go through the points you have mentioned here.

- Lifetime policy is always (with every company, except perhaps one or two) open to change of terms.
- We NEVER intended on changing terms, as we want to offer our customers as much support as possible, it is the underwriters who cancel on us and we are left to deal with the problems.
- We never planned on changing underwriters we have only done this when our existing underwriters have tried to put up prices so much that they gave us no choice.
- Lots of pet insurance companies have had to pull out of the business as they made such little amounts of money.
- We have managed to obtain some emergency cover for clients with potentially chronic conditions.
- if conditions are not chronic then after 24 months, everything will go back to normal.
- Have you had problems with a slow claim, have you called our office? They will be happy to help.

We are so sorry that these changes have left you with a shortfall and this is something we are continually working.

Please do keep in touch.

“Another stitched up customer!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MARIENORTHWAY123 on 09/10/2015

I too took out the 'lifetime' policy. I have never had to claim before but when my dog turned 5 he was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease. He had some tests which I claimed for due to the high cost. My premium was about £40 a month. Ive today had a letter too saying the underwriters have changed. My premium has gone up to £114 per month (that's nearly a 300% increase!!) and they will now only pay a further £3k for his lifetime towards any inflammatory bowel disease related issues! What a joke! You pay for lifetime cover for just that. Avoid like the plague!!!

“So Disappointed”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Baroquecat on 09/09/2015

Like other recent reviewers I insured my 2 dogs for *life* approx 5 years ago. I still have the original leaflet picked up from my vets surgery at the time. And I quote: ""Lifetime pet insurance is invaluable. We offer three lifetime policies, all offering exceptional levels of cover. Lifetime cover provides peace of mind for pet owners concerned about their pet developing a long term, chronic or recurring illness. We will pay year after year, for any necessary veterinary treatment of your pet as long as you are insured with us."" Now suddenly premiums are hiked and an excess of £85 + 10% for the 6 year old and £85 + 15% for the 8 year old, lifetime cover withdrawn and EVERY condition covered by them prior to the renewal date is excluded. Customer service are very pleasant to deal with and agree that this is not the cover I signed up for but say the underwriter calls the shots and they don't want to pay claims. I urge anyone in a similar position to use the Finacial Ombudsman Complaint Service.
