“3 years I have been with them”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 26/11/2014

I have been with vets medicover for 3 years. My dog had his annual 'teeth check' as stipulated on the policy and last year was fine. This year he has gum disease so needed his teeth all sorting out with possible extraction, he also had an infected foot, which happened the day before his teeth were scheduled. I phoned up and was given the underwriters telephone number. I was told before any questions had been asked 'scale and polish not covered'. I explained it was more than a 'scale and polish'. She was trying to get me to agree a bit that it was a 'scale and polish' It was almost like I felt they were looking immediately not to pay out (3 years and never claimed). I phoned the vets and told them and they confirmed he had gum disease so its not a 'scale and polish'and the insurance should pay out for that as its not routine. I told the vet I fear this will not be the case etc and I will have to go to the Ombudsman die to the general attitude and demenour. I bought from this company as they were recommended 3 years ago, I see from reivews now they are not. I am waiting to hear and they have applied to my vet. If they don't pay out I will cancel and move. I am so far not happy at all! Not worht the money and the reasurance you get from having a decent policy is misguided.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear this. Routine dental cleaning is not covered under our policy! What has happened with the infected foot?

I hope we can sort this for you!

Hi,
You are apparently applying to the vet for his notes. This was about 1.5 weeks ago, should I have heard from you by now? As I stated above it is not routine. The vet told me it is not routine and you 'should' pay out (from their point of view, although they deal mainly with Petplan) I feel I am repeating myself, regarding the 'not routine' The infected foot is on the notes also.

Adding exclamation marks at the end of sentences changes their tone. So adding it under the sentence 'Routine dental cleaning is not covered under our policy!', when I have firstly stated not routine, appears rather aggresive to the reader and quite unhelpful.

People read these threads when making a decision about with whom to insure their pet. Like I said I have been with you problem free for 3 years (maybe because I never claimed, one wonders?).

Therefore I think I deserve a little more respect as a customer than to be exclaimed at like I am either a bit dim or unfair on you. Which I am neither.

Regards

“Review of VetsMediCover ”

★★★★☆

written by teddog on 19/11/2014

"I want to reiterate my confidence in Vetsmedicover, the company and the administrations team who through the years we have had your valuable services have always been courteous, helpful, kind and supportive when Ted's been poorly, not something that is trained but a natural attribute I've found your staff to have , it is with pleasure I renew Ted's Pet Cover with you again, although I realise different underwriters hopefully the same staff have been appointed under TUPE ? It does however get worrying when it seems almost yearly underwriters are changed! I am and will continue to advise other pet owners of Vetsmedicover being one to definitely join, I know of two owners who signed up following my advice, and I hope many more will also. I leave you with my kindest regards"

“Vetsmedicover - Very disappointing!”

★★☆☆☆

written by kaCoughlin217 on 29/10/2014

I had my 3 Cocker Spaniels insured with Vetmedicover for the past 2 or 3 years. Originally, the cover and price looked great - just Vets Fees and Third Party Cover - no fancy stuff you would probably never need. The premium was £250 per annum for any breed (apart from giant breeds). The following year, the premiums rose to £336 per annum, which seemed reasonable enough, with inflation. This year, the policy has changed completely. There is no longer the one-price-fits-all, and the premiums rose to £634 per dog!!!! This was despite the fact that I have NEVER made any claim for 2 of my dogs in the whole of their 9 years! I was told I could go for the lower cover for the 2 dogs, which would give me £6,000 worth of cover for £500 - not really giving me anything there... This was bad enough, but when I enquired if I could have the lower cover for my third dog, they told me no, because they had paid out over £600 in the past 2 years (I have actually paid £1,758 in premiums, so that sounds like a fair profit to me!)They said they would normally suggest I took out a new policy, but because my third dog is 9 yrs old, and they don't take on new dogs over 8 yrs old, I would not be able to do this! Now, she was not exactly a new dog, was she? I had been paying premiums for the past 2 years. The prices and the cover may seem competitive compared with other insurance companies, but they seem to make up the rules as they go along, and I have completely lost all the trust and faith I originally had in them. Needless to say, I have not renewed the insurance for any of my dogs. Instead, I have taken out Dogs Trust Membership, which includes Third Party Cover, at a cost of £25 per annum - and a worthwhile cause to boot! The money I would have paid out in premiums has been put into a savings account to pay for any unexpected vets bills.

I have been trying to decide what to write here. I'm so sorry the price has risen so much. I am pleased you found us to be great for so long! All pet insurance companies are battling with huge claims costs and we are trying to stay as cost effective as possible. Our service and focus will always remain this way and we are very sorry that you found us to be too expensive. We get lots of big claims for £9000 and this is why we continue to make sense. Please do consider us again if you get a new puppy. We are cost effective, especially when compared to the competition. Thank you for your feedback, all the best, The VMC Team.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately you seem to have completely missed the point. Yes, the hike in premiums is excessive, but, as mentioned above, that is only part of the story.

Back in September 2011, when we first took out cover for our 3 dogs, there was a straightforward policy and just one level of cover for a maximum of £10,000 (now know as Diamond cover). In 2012 and 2013 the premiums has risen by a realistic amount, but there was still only one level of cover.

In September 2014, when we received the renewal, the policy had completely changed. There was a massive price hike, and there were now 4 levels of cover - Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.

Vetsmedicover did offer us the option to reduce the cover to Platinum for two of our dogs, who we have never made a claim for. However, when we enquired what the premium would be for our third dog, we received the following reply, which I am quoting word-for-word, as no-one would believe it otherwise:

"We have had a look into your renewal for you and unfortunately due to the past two years claims history we are unable to offer you the next level of cover down which is Platinum. A total of £676.11 has been paid for claims and as specified by the underwriter we are unable to lower the cover to Platinum or Gold. We would normally then suggest to a customer that they could take out a completely new cover if they wished to do so but we are unable to do this for nnnn as she is already 9 years old, we are unable to take out new cover for a pet that is already over the age of 8."

£676.11 paid out over 2 yrs on a limit of £10,000 per year???
New cover???

If you are coming up with such ridiculous 'rules' when you are requesting money from us, what chance would we have if we ever had to make a claim?

I am sure that it cannot be ethical to attract customers with one policy, then completely change it, and not give any leaway to existing customers because their dogs are now older and there may be a greater risk of them making a claim. There must be some customers who have been with you since 2011 who are unable to insure their pets elsewhere due to pre-existing conditions, and will be trapped into having to pay for Diamond cover.

I think possibly the 'service' and 'focus' you are so proud of may need reviewing.....

“Really disappointed - cancelled our policy”

written by scowle on 30/09/2014

I insured our 8yr old Weimaraner with VetsMediCover about 3 years ago and was really impressed with them until last year. Originally they were great, really helpful on the phone if you had a query, a very efficient claims process and competitive prices. The company has totally changed in the last year, with a new underwriter, and their terms have changed too. Their prices have sky-rocketed and they no longer stand out from all the other insurance providers out there. I recommended them to so many dog owners that I know but not any more. I cancelled our policy this year as I was so unhappy with the service.

I am so sorry to hear this. Insuring an older dog is very expensive, however the prices are still fantastic for lower risk animals. The policy with the new underwriter does offer more benefits overall. Claims and costs have gone through the roof so to stay in business we have had to make some changes. The prices are still more than fair when compared to similar competitors. Thanks for leaving some feedback and we hope you are both well. All the best, The VMC team.

“Very caring!”

★★★★★

written by Kaleight393 on 12/09/2014

I was recommended to this company by a friend and I haven't been disappointed! I joined Vetsmedicover in March and unfortunately in May my EBT puppy fell of the sofa during a mad 5 minute 'bully run'. I rushed her to the vets and initially we thought she had sprained her knee, after 3 weeks her limping was worse and she was re-xrayed, long story short, in June she ended up having a her femoral head removed (major Hip operation). Since her op she has had to endue physio & hydrotherapy (which she is still undergoing). From the very first phonecall, Vetsmedicover could not have been more supportive & helpful. They have been very prompt with payment, given good advice, reassurance and even a shoulder to cry on when I (rather pathetically!!) burst into tears on the phone after learning that my little pup was to have a big operation!!!! ) I cannot thank them enough for being there through a very stressful time, for the support & wonderful customer care they give each and every time I ring with yet another vet bill!! A special thank you to the person who was that very shoulder, you are amazing, you have been very caring which makes a huge difference! With this company you are very definitely NOT just a number. Keep up the good work & I promise that once Molly has recovered we won't ever (god willing!) hassle you again :)

“A lifetime policy that provides the cover we need!”

★★★★★

written by Cullen192 on 18/08/2014

I had previously taken cover with other insurance providers, and although we had never claimed the premiums rose year on year. We changed to Vetsmedicover last year after a friend mentioned that she had taken out cover with them. Last month our dog underwent surgery for a cruciate ligament injury, without the high level of cover we would never have been able to pay for the treatment ourselves, which is actually quite worrying. Vetsmedicover paid our vets directly, and we covered the excess... such a relief! Our renewal has just arrived, and although the premium has risen, which I would have expected due to the claim, it is still cheaper than a new policy with some other companies. As our policy will continue to cover for any other treatment with regards to this injury, we are very happy to stay with Vetsmedicover.

“Fantastic company! Excellent value & kind and helpful...”

written by princessp1983 on 17/07/2014

I am really pleased with the service that VetsMediCover provide for my dog. I have got my Labrador Mia insured with them and I first took her policy out when she was a puppy. I chose the higher level of cover (vet's fees for up to £10,000) because I know how expensive vet bills can be due to my old dog having hip dysplasia. It is always best to plan for unexpected illness and so I would recommend that people take out the higher cover. Anyway when she was about 11 months old she became poorly and my vet decided that we needed to test her for allergies. The costs for these tests are very expensive but VetsMediCover covered all of the costs (minus the excess) without any hassle at all. I was so pleased and it was so reassuring to know that I have got my dog insured with such a good company. It has turned out that she has indeed got allergies and without VetsMediCover we wouldn't have known this because I would have struggled financially to pay for the tests myself. Also the customer service team are always friendly and helpful and there were no questions asked when I rang up for a claim form. All in all I rate this company 10/10 and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for pet insurance. Tanya Sanders Walsall

“Pre-exisiting conditions”

★★★★★

written by 275Bailey on 09/07/2014

Just enquired about pet insurance for my Beagle with VetsMediCover - he has a pre-existing condition and they can insure him. This has taken a huge weight off my shoulders and I cannot thank VetsMediCover enough. I started to book online (great, easy to use website) but thought I'd better call their office to ask about the pre-existing condition my boy has got. The girl I spoke to there was so helpful - I would recommend this company. I didn't think I could get insurance for my dog with his pre-existing condition. I was thankfully proved wrong! Thank you.

“FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC!”

written by lilacgeorge on 05/06/2014

When I was looking for Insurance for my English Bull Terrier pup I went through all the big companies, they wanted silly money - PP wanted £85 a month!!! Then my brother mentioned Vets Medicover, his mate that had a EBT used them & said he throughly recommended them.... so I looked into it! I was very impressed with their policy cover & especially their premium. Son in February when my pup came home I took out a policy. All was well until last week.... Molly was, well, being a puppy and was jumping around on the sofa when she stepped back, missed her footing and fell of the sofa - something she'd done loads of times before.... only this time, she must have fell awkwardly, she got up and was holding up her hind leg. Long story short, I rushed her to the emergency vet where they said they thought she'd probably just twisted her knee and that hopefully with rest it would ease up, on Monday we took her back to the vet and they carried out X-rays under G/A. I rang VetsMedicover to give them a heads up, within minutes they had contacted my vets, and within 3 days they had rang me and asked for my bank details!!!!!! Impressive huh! The lady I dealt with was amazing, very polite & helpful, I was quite upset when I first rang them as had been told that my pup may have to have a op, but Ann (I think thats her name!) was brilliant. She put me at ease, was very reassuring and comforting and even had me laughing by the end of it!!! I can't recommend this company enough!!!!!!!! Thank you to Vets MediCover!

Just to update you, Molly is still undergoing treatment for the above injury, she ended up having a pretty major operation - femoral head removal - and is still recovering. Since her operation in June, she has had to endure intensive physio & hydrotherapy of which she is still going through. Vetsmedicover have been amazing throughout, very supportive and caring, prompt with payment (had it not been for them I dread to think what would have happened as I would never have been able to afford the treatment).
I VERY highly recommend this company!!!!! Thank you Vetsmedicover!!!!

“Common Sense Cover”

★★★★★

written by HaydenMacKinnon342 on 16/04/2014

Finally some common sense! My golden Labrador suffered with eczema as a pup so the vet prescribed him with some anti inflammatory medicines that helped a bit but the problem persisted. Eventually we realised that Bruce was eating the wrong foods so we moved him over to a raw food diet and the problem cleared up. However, we haven't been able to cover him for eczema or anything that could relate to the problem, despite him not having suffered from this condition for over 3 years. When it came to renewal I saw that Vets Medi Cover would cover Bruce again with lifetime cover, for all conditions... the price isn't cheap, but it's not a rip off like some others who quoted. I shall be telling everyone I know to look out for Vets Medi Cover!

I was recently contacted by the insurer, asking about my claim experience with Mango, our three year old Golden Labrador. The claims payment was rapid, very easy and the customer service throughout was excellent. I'd like to make a point of mentioning that it's great value for money with a really impressive level of cover which I'm always wary about. “Fair and efficient”

★★★★☆

written by Rottiesrule on 19/02/2014

I've had my Rottie with vets medi cover for several years now. With their past administrator everything was a fight but since they have changed to their new company I have found their service greatly improved. Properly qualified vet nurses now assess the claims and they seem fair and sensible. Claims are also paid in a reasonably timely manner of 2 to 3 weeks. If you have a very large claim with them they do put your premium up the next year but they advised me that if I didn't claim during the following year it would go back down which I felt was reasonable. The level of cover is excellent and for my breed they are very keenly priced. During my last claim they dealt quickly and efficiently with my specialist direct and kept me informed. Don't think you could ask for more.

Having had the right treatment our claims were met satisfactorily, apart from the excess and some minor expenses not included in the claim. We were disappointed that the annual insurance fee has gone up by 50%. We understand that vets' fees are causing this and wish you success with your negotiations, otherwise people will be obliged to find some cheaper arrangements.

We have had great service with this insurance company. Our dog was covered under a lifetime policy(would defiantly reccomend as our dog developed arthritis). They have paid out for everything we have claimed for, which unfortunately when our beloved dog Was very poorly included some very costly tests/scans/medication.They paid the vet directly within days of the claim been sent in.The only issue we encounted was from the vet's ,they were apprehensive about our Insurance just because they hadn't heard about this company before! This was annoying when they kept queryin the amount of cover we had(which we could have done without at a stressful time) The vet's seem to be under the impression that only pet plan will do.I have nothing but praise for this insurance company and would use them again.

“Stick with the big insurers... avoid this company”

★☆☆☆☆

written by teatree1970 on 29/01/2014

I just received my renewal and VetsMedicover are now asking for 20% of the vets fees on a claim if your animal is over 7, after being a loyal customer for quite a few years I felt robbed. I did a bit of shopping around and although some insurer's do this most of the big ones have this change when your animal is 10 not 7.... Back to pet plan for me. Very disappointed in this company, my advice if you are looking for pet insurance is to stick with the larger companies pay, a bit more but at least you know where you stand. This is just another insurance company trying to rip you off.

VetsMediCover do offer excellent value for money compared to most other companies when you consider quality of cover against price. Co-insurance is a contentious issue but it does ensure the business thrives, premiums are reasonable and enables you to give your pet the best treatment. We hope to hear from you again.

“Change of mind”

★★☆☆☆

written by Marlow001 on 29/01/2014

If I could put money on vets medicover going bust I would. They have totally lost my trust. I have been with them for over two years, through several underwriters and never had a problem. Had to claim once for £200 ish but it went through ok although the receptionist did argue it until she spoke with the vet and he put her right. Recently I have received an email informing me of a price rise in our monthly direct debit and also because my dog is now 8 I have to pay 20% of the bill myself. Don't get be wrong I don't object to the price rise as I understand with age comes an higher chance of illness, but Surely in our world today this is age discrimination. I could maybe understand them doing this if you were a new customer taking out the policy but you can't just do this after a few years when you know someone's dog has just turned 8 and there was no mention of it going up at the beginning of the policy? My dog has a condition that will possibly affect her in later life so I know chances are high that at some stage I may have to make another claim. Because she is now 8 I will struggle to find another insurer so I intend now canceling my claim and saving the £40 a month in a bank account for the event that in the future I will need to visit a vet If this is how they treat existing customers they are not on my list of recommendations to new people. Sorry vets medi cover you have lost me as a customer, just annoyed now that the hundreds you have already had from me are in your bank account and not mine. Hopefully my car insurers don't bump up my price suddenly when I reach 50 ....... I hope this is not what you are doing to all customers because your greed is losing you long standing customers who trusted in you and recommended you to others looking for insurance

Vetsmedicover's Response to Marlow001's Review

Written on: 19/02/2014

Sorry you feel this way! We are really not greedy and take a very small part of the premium as profit. I hope you can come back to us in the future if you have another pet as our policy really does work and make sense. Thank you for recommending us in the past. The co-insurance can seem distressing but it has to be there to protect the business! Sorry you felt let down. All the best, team VMC.
