British Gas vs HomeServe Boiler Cover — Which is best?

British Gas and HomeServe offer roughly the same services, but HomeServe is the clear winner. “Not impressed!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/08/2023

I took the Plumbing and Drainage cover out with a discounted price for the first year, then for this second year the cost was £120pa with an excess of £30 for each time you make a claim. I'm not sure this is a good service as the last call out it was only a washer required, even though the pipes under the sink looked in poor condition, the plumber would only change the washer. Today, I have a leak under the bath and it's quite a bit of water, the plumber has said that it's the sealant and they don't carry that out. So I have paid the £30 excess but no work has been carried out. The reason why I am a bit suspicious is the plumber came into my flat with no tools. Maybe he is that clever to know that he wasn't going to need his tools!

“Incompetent "engineers" can only do easy jobs”

★☆☆☆☆

written by bossyy on 10/05/2023

I identified the leaking pipe under the kitchen floor by crawling in the subfloor space myself. I knew in order to change the pipe, it had to be accessed from both outside and under the floor. Their "engineer" turned up and said he would not access it from outside, they had nobody small enough to go in the subfloor space and the only way would be to rip kitchen tiles, underfloor heating etc to get to the pipe and then it would be my responsibility to replace them all- at least £6000-7000 of damage plus the inconvenience. I told him to go away. Luckily found a competent local plumber who replaced the full length of the pipe and joints from both outside and the subfloor space as I had expected, all for £190! Homeserve still had the cheek to charge me £30 for nothing, although I have requested a refund. This is the third time I needed them for something and each time they have proven to be incompetent- I ended up fixing it myself or getting someone else to do it. I will not renew my contract. They asked me to send them the plumber's invoice. After sending it to them they said they wanted full report from the plumber about what he did!!! As if the poor plumber has the time to write an essay. HomeServe lives on the bureaucratic planet of nonsense.

“Disgraceful ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CaseyConnell on 09/04/2023

DISGRACEFUL! Do not but any homeserve policy. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Blocked drains twice, paid my excess twice. Second time I was told there is pipe work issue and given a report as to what work needs completing. Then told I need to locate the issue myself as it may not be on my property and I was told to call Severn Trent. So visit number three, Severn Trent turn up, and explain the issue is in a manhole on my property with faulty pipe work and Homeserve should have done this. Visit number four Homeserve send a different engineer out who located approximately site of issue but told me it’s my responsibility to get it dug up and exposed. I spend time and money having my drive dug up, mess every where! Vist 5 Same Engineer turns up looks at the manhole I’ve exposed, inside my own property 6 weeks on and just says, I’m not doing that, it’s a different department and left. After three weeks and over five hours of phone calls. I was hung up on three times by rude call handlers Never called back on at least five occasions by mangers. Told consistently for 5since February that if I can prove the pipe work is on my land and I expose it myself Homeserve will replace it, After all this, five afternoons of work costing me £1250 in income, digging up my new drive at my own cost and expense including making a mess on my neighbours drive. I am told that the regional manager for my area has now declined my job. We are horrified! I have made a complaint, no response! I am sick of homeserve and have been misled to constantly the regional manager could not even be bothered to speak to me just told a manager to call me and decline the repair work, No explanation! I have CCTV of everything that has happened and a written report stating what work needs doing! I actually told Homserve that I would write this review on Trust pilot if I did not hear back from a manger to get my job finished, guess what no calls, not interested at all. I am left with no option if this regional manager does not call me this week to get this job done, I will be contacting rip off Britain with my documentation, reports and CCTV. I have asked for a freedom of request to be actioned by the regional manager for my telephone conversations and logs as I will be taking these to sham Britain too. So far Homeserve have failed to provide this as well!

“Appalling Service AVOID”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Andre208 on 21/03/2023

A gas engineer came to our property do a boiler check. I wasn’t advised of any issues on the day but when he returned to the office he registered a faulty part on our boiler which in turn resulted in them writing to us to advise they wouldn’t insure the boiler without the part being replaced at a cost of £180. I made several calls to advise the engineer hadn’t found a problem on the day neither did he discuss anything with me. The engineer also couldn’t provide a copy of my signature on his report to prove this. I went around and around in circles for over a month, raised a complaint, and all homeserve customer service advised was that their engineers are qualified, he registered a fault and basically what he said goes. I was promised on so many occasions someone was looking into the issue and I would receive a call back but that never happened. They refused to send another engineer to provide a second opinion. Homeserve bought, supplied and fitted our boiler a few years back but again they weren’t interested, the engineers report was gospel. Not even their executive office was interested so after more than a month trying to resolve this issue I’ve cancelled our direct debit and am going back to British Gas that provide a similar cover but with much better customer service. Appalling service Homeserve, you deserve to lose customers with this level of service.

“Most pathetic service horrible company ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 153Fitzpatrick on 18/03/2023

Most pathetic unprofessional company. They took money from us all year. When I lodged a complaint for a clogged sink drainage pipe, the plumber came used some wet vacuum, left within 5 min. Half heartedly completed the job, the pipe got more clogged after he went I have drainage water coming in my kitchen. When I lodged a complaint they said someone will call within 24 hrs. It's one & half day passed by no one called, water is leaking in my kitchen & they've booked a service for 3 days after (complained on friday guy will visit on Sunday). I've called them again for my complaint handling waited 7 min no one answered I ended the call. Called yesterday the customer services guy put me on hold!!!! We are Simply Ending the service after the job the plumber has messed up is done, most money grabbing & cheap service providers!!!!!! 0/10

“Sham”

★☆☆☆☆

written by iainl8 on 12/03/2023

I used Homeserve to inspect my Electric Recliner chair that had stopped working. A very nice nice engineer came and quickly diagnosed a faulty switch. He said an estimate to replace the switch would follow. It did a few days later. The letter stated:- Thank you for choosing Homeserve Furniture Repairs Ltd to assist you with your furniture issues. I have made enquiries to the manufacturer and new side switch fitted are available to purchase. To supply and fit the parts, there will be an additional charge of £180+VAT. Please note that parts may take several weeks to arrive once ordered. Thinking that this seemed a little (!) high I researched and found and bought a new switch on Ebay for £15 including VAT and delivery. I fitted it myself in 15 minutes. What a sham! £216 for a £15 switch! So, £201 for fitting? Yes I know this includes VAT! Whilst I did pay £66 for the initial technicians visit, which I thought was a bit expensive at least he diagnosed the problem and was a very nice person. To pay such an exhorbitant amount for changing a switch is to my mind a big trick! As a casual user I will not use them again.

“Disgrace - steer clear!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jo_Ewan on 20/02/2023

Would have given 0 stars if that was an option. We’ve had 4 weeks of water coming through from the bathroom, 2 asbestos tests (really?) 6 different engineers with no common sense or empathy, and now the ceiling has collapsed. In true Homeserve style, they cancelled the emergency appointment 30 mins before the end of the day (Monday) and then had the audacity to offer me the following Friday. At the end of my tether, with no support or guidance from HomeServe. What an absolute joke you are. Please please don’t take out any policies with them.

“Really poor service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Wimbledon1313 on 17/02/2023

Very poor service. Booked an engineer for problem with overflow pipe…who didn’t turn up on agreed date…spoke to customer services and they promised they would rearrange and that the engineer would definitely turn up a week later……didn’t turn up again!! No call made to advise on either occasion that the engineer wouldn’t be able to make it…..3 weeks after booking I’m still waiting!! It was a landlord policy so I asked them to send flowers to the tenants to apologise for the inconvenience but they refused. Extremely disappointing.

“Waste of £60”

★☆☆☆☆

written by TayJiva on 23/01/2023

When I booked for a mattress review, I specifically asked for details about what the mattress inspector would look for. They should have explained that the 18 month old mattress can have a dip of 3cm and still be considered to be 'within tolerance' for the manufacturer (Dreams). If they had been clear, I wouldn't have wasted £60 and my time on an inspection. The inspector said someone would call me to discuss my dissatisfaction, but they didn't. The report didn't include details about the amount of dip in the mattress or the tolerance level.

“Take your money but dont turn up ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CasonDonaldson140 on 14/12/2022

To keep this short - I rang and made a appointment regarding a emergency leak and I paid my excess at the time of making the appointment, they are suppose to contact you if they cannot attend the appointment time and date which was 12pm to 6pm, they did not turn up or let me know so a full day wasted waiting. I rang and made a second appointment and again they did not contact me or turn up so I rang and contacted them via online chat to see whats happening and complain.. they gave me another appointment 2 weeks away, my repair is down as a emergency and I have 2 under 4 year olds living with me and now I have to turn off the water as its getting really bad which affect my heating when the water is off too. The company is quick to take your monthly direct debit on time and quick to take your excess upon the origional booking of the appointment but they fail to come out and repair your leaks and they fail to inform you that they cannot attend so you waste each day waiting in. I called them thus afternoon to check if they are still coming and they said yes a engineer will be with you by between 12-6pm. 5.30pm i contacted them and was told a engineer was still coming but again they have not so I contacted via online chat to find out that he or she is not coming and they can offer another app 2 weeks away. I would avoid this company at all costs if you have any leaks they do not turn up. They are full of empty promises. Please avoid and go with a company which actually has there customers in mind rather than taking the biscuit...

“Oh so disappointed ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MaryLoizou1 on 31/10/2022

Just cancelled my policy with this company. After their boiler health check they decided to pass the boiler but to fail the system advising it needed a power flush. Absolute rubbish. The system was only installed 3 years ago and is in perfect working order. It did not need a gas safety certificate as the current one is valid till next February. Seems to me they were either trying to get money out of us or just putting in place obstacles for any future claims to be successful. No I would never use them ever again.

“Staff are awful and not helpful”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AlvinWhalen on 28/10/2022

Please make sure you tell them the exact models as even a small word such as tank or cylinder gives them the opportunity to refuse which happened to me. Staff are awful and not helpful and rude and lazy. One was half asleep and the female kept sighing during the call. Please go somewhere else as there policies are totally wortless.

“Policy”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Stevemac27 on 13/05/2022

Took out a policy with them on the 27th of April on the 13th of may I am told ah though you pay your money straight away you are not covered for the first month. So when on the 13th of May I find my drain blocked outside my house the policy is worthless they are not worth dealing with save your money. Unhelpful staff saying you should have read the fine print as if my drain could have been told not to block till the 27th of May service is rubbish and unhelpful they haven’t changed since they got slated on watchdog.

“Rubbish service!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by clitheroeclaret on 05/05/2022

Was with Homeserve for an initial 12 months then noticed the monthly premiums had more than doubled. Phoned them to cancel. A month later noticed they were still talking money from my account, got in touch with them again and they're refusing to repay what they owe me. Meanwhile have been bombarded with letters, probably about 10 by now, to say I'm entitled to a boiler service! Badly run company

“Left me with no hot water for 3 weeks”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 467Martinez on 22/04/2022

Three weeks without hot water through the homeserve insurance with affinity. Numerous appointments not turned up to on the day they were due to happen. They told me half their plumbers can't turn up because they hadn't kept their certificates for work up to date. Avoid homeserve at all costs.

“Money grabbers!”

★★☆☆☆

written by Coxuf253 on 25/03/2022

When you sign up for boiler cover they demand you have a boiler health check before they will allow you to take out the cover contract. During the health check if they identify anything they think is a concern they tell you it's failed the health check and can't be put on the boiler cover contract until the issues have been fixed. Just seems like a way of them identifying any possible issues upfront, you paying for them beforehand and then them offering cover afterwards when they know you are unlikely to claim from them. Have gone elsewhere where I dont feel they are just after trying to get as much money out of me as possible.

“Stay away from Homeserve !! Unreliable ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Marchhope on 04/12/2021

Some years ago I have took a contract with Homeserve but realising it was useless I cancelled. Since then I've had callas and letter offering a good deal so I took again. During the bouler inspection plumber has damaged my sink tap which he has no reason to even go there. Now my contract is due for renewal and they send me a double price to what they advertising on their website. After inquiry they told me tbe cheap price is only for new customer to invite them in. What are shambolic company manipulating customers to get I to contract and have no loyalty to the current customers treating us like unused doormat. I've cancelled contract.
