“bad, bad, bad.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by firebyrd on 25/04/2020

Been with Halifax for about a year and my partner with them for six months. We always find them unfriendly and unhelpful especially the Stockport branch. We went in today to pay in and as usual, we were met with unfriendly door staff who always try to make things as difficult as possible. today she went too far and the counter staff just sniggered so we both ended up closing all our accounts there and then on the spot. they forget they need us as customers but we don't need them. if your unhappy it's easy to swap banks so just do it.

“Apalling customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by karenc606 on 01/03/2017

Opened the " Reward" current account on the promise if I fulfilled their criteria I would receive £100 reward . All criteria met , however as their switching serviced failed and I had to transfer my direct debits myself. They have used that excuse no to pay . Explained it was their fault not mine , I pay in £1850 pcm and have more than 2 direct debits but the computer says no. It is a feeble excuse not to pay so guess what ... this new customer is moving . Customer Service is appalling

“Website not compatible with IE when opening application”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RebeccaPiddock on 17/01/2016

I decided to open a joint bank account so followed Halifax on line services. It authorised the account but would not allow me to select a branch. I then had to call customer services. Upon calling it is a known error- but apparently I could spend a further 30 mins on the phone trying to open the same account. I cant resolve this online as it wont allow me to try again for 72 hrs. So I know have this noted on my credit score, but because the website has a known fault, I cant simply open my account. This is just not good enough for a bank! If I have encountered issues at this stage, why would I wish to continue when most of my baking is done online???

“Aweful customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RaymondSchmitt on 02/01/2016

Recently opened an account with the switch service, this was. It completed as promised and I ended up informing half my providers of my new bank details. When fraud occurred on my account the service was horrific, 1 hour wait for the fraud dept, when eventually through to them was greeted with being called a liar and refusing to help. Ended up making a formal complaint and yet again waiting for a formal response.

“my family put in financial crisis by HALIFAX”

★☆☆☆☆

written by chrisofeagle on 07/11/2015

Halifax, what can I say. I thought they were the bees knees. after having monies taken from my account without my consent, they duly got it back. Now money has been put into my account, according to them ( HALIFAX ) by fraudulent means. They have closed my account and told me to look for another organisation to bank with. With them I had an overdraft facility of 1750.00, I recently got paid my monthly salary of approx. 2400.00. I used about 1400.00 on the monthly bills etc. and now have no money available until the end of the month. I have 3 children, hardly any food, no petrol to get to work. I explained that this decision to close my account would put my family and myself in financial difficulty, the response was " there is nothing we can do, this is the HALIFAX procedure. goodbye". I would like to no, can they put people in this position with no prior notice or chance of negotiation.

“Robotic anti-customer " services"”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ailurophile on 08/10/2015

Halifax Bank's Current Account "Service" and Customer "Services" Can't get a bank statement to us within a week of it's being printed, and often longer, stopped my card because there's been fraudulent activity on it, didn't tell me - said that they couldn't reach me by phone - I'm disabled and at home all the time, with the same number we've had for years, said that they're written to explain - they hadn't, took me a day to get through to the Fraud Dept ( in N Ireland!), can't get through to complaints people - spoke to 4 yobs today, all of whom except the last were "the wrong person to deal with this", last was obstructive, hard to understand and over and over asked for details from this month's statement, whose non-arrival I was trying to complain about. He had our names, address, post-code, phone number, email number, bank account number, sort code - I had today's balance on that account, a list of our standing orders and direct debits but I FAILED security - this after over an hour being pushed from one yob to another. And we are high-worth customers with a top credit rating!!! We are moving banks - I'd advise anyone who's not with them to avoid them like the plague. At Our ages - 70s and 80s, we don't need this and we HATE rudeness and stupidity, which is all that Halifax appears to do.

“Been with Halifax since I was 13”

★★★★★

written by jackshea250 on 28/01/2015

I started off with a Cardcash account and went to an Reward Account when I turned 18 (was called something different then but cant remember). I have never had a problem, they always say beforehand if their will be down time and I always get messages asking to change password to keep account as secure as possible (never been hacked yet). There was one time when I tried paying off my MasterCard but I had entered the account number wrong so the money kept bouncing causing me to not pay off the minimum balance by the correct day, I rang them up the next day and they could see my failed 3 or 4 attempts at paying so they refunded me the late payment charge. Last week I went in to just see how much I could borrow for a mortgage and the guy was very friendly. So as you can tell from this review, I have never had a problem with Halifax and will continue to be with them for the foreseeable future.

“Problems changing to Halifax Clarity card!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AgileServices on 14/08/2014

The Halifax Clarity appears as a very useful card to hold. But that is ONLY if you are not already a Halifax customer! I have had a Halifax Gold card for many years, spend about £2000 per month on their card and pay it off in full each month and don't exceed my credit limit. I also have a current account with the Halifax with over £10k balance as well as an ISA . I expected that I would be classed as a valued and trusted customer! Unfortunately that is not so! If you already hold a Halifax card and want to change to the Clarity card then stand by for a lot of problems! To change you don't just ask as they have changed their procedures several months ago. You have to cancel your existing card first and then apply for the Clarity. You then wait 30-60 days to see if they will accept you for the Clarity card. There is no guarantee that they will accept you. In fact a marker on my account implies that I will not be accepted for the Clarity so I would end up with no card at all. This is totally out of step with all the other major banks who let you upgrade from one type of card to another. This even includes Lloyds, which together with Halifax is part of the RBS group. Lloyds even allow you to hold two of their cards!

“Dysfunctional, chaotic ,no thought for its customers”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 290Emery on 15/07/2014

I had money taken out of my account despite putting a stop to the direct debit with the bank. It's been a nightmare getting my money back, every customer adviser I have spoken to we're clueless, dysfunctional and as I write this the dispute has not been resolved. The couldn't even give me a time scale of when it would be resolved, had empty promises of phoning me back which never materialised, I have had to phone on each occassion to remind them and all the time I have to go through the same process of repeating myself with no positive results, to say halifax bank is useless is an understatement, I can't wait to move to a better bank who value it's customers, FUMING!!

I'm having similar problems, they can't set up a direct debit from a Halifax account to pay a Halifax mortgage, this has been going on four months. Again like you, phoning them is just talking to a brick wall. Absolutely useless customer service, I'm in also FUMING!

“I Didn't Get a little extra help from the Halifax ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Hobgoblyn on 25/06/2014

Having lost my card and reported it, The bank will only let me withdraw £50 a day! I'm going away on holiday in 2 days and need to buy my euros, This has now ruined my holiday and I may need to cancel it! I will never trust this bank with my money again. There are banks out there which have ways around these kind of problems why the Halifax can't be one of them I have no idea.

“A total waste of time and confusing ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by eunicecg on 13/01/2014

I applied a new current account on-line and opted for the bank switch as their website prompted. I was impressed in the beginning as I received the confirmation and my current account details, card, password and cancellation letter from my previous bank in 3 days. HOWEVER, almost at the same time I received the letter and text informed me that the switch was failed, WITHOUT FURTHER INSTRUCTION AND ANY EXPLANATION, the current account I applied for has been closed on the 5th day! I have called the customer service and gone to my local branch to find out the reason. They were unable to help as there was no information or explanation on their system either! The branch manager was surprised as he has never seen anything like this in 7 years of working there. I have a steady income, no overdraft, and hold accounts in 3 different high street banks. The first encounter with Halifax was utterly disappointing and that touch me this is the bank I should steer away from.

“service says hasstle free, its not!”

★★☆☆☆

written by lornash on 26/10/2013

it says on the web site that it will be hassle free and all bills will go out without any fees for 6 months but this is rubbish, they didnt let my accout go over drawn by £13 to let my mortgage go out then i got paid 12hrs later. so endured fee from mortgage company. i would have paiud the £5 a day over draft fee instead of the £25 from mortgage companmy and the bad credit rating it will have left me with. i wouldnt mind but hadnt even had the account a month!! i would never change accounts again! hassle hassle hassle

“WASTE OF TIME!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/10/2013

Switched after being tempted by the £100 incentive and wish I'd never bothered as the whole experience has been a complete nightmare. The £100 was not deposited as promised nor did they transfer any money from my old account into the new Halifax one. They did however transfer my direct debits who attempted to take payment from an account with no money in, thus causing my new account to go into overdraft and charges were applied. I spent over and hour and thirty minutes sorting this out on the phone and was given a £40 credit as an apology. To top it all off after 8 weeks of waiting for my old Yorkshire bank account to be closed I ended up going into the bank and closing it myself. The switch account in 7 days thing that they like to gloat about is a load of rubbish. Stay put with your own bank, this isn't worth the hassle or the stress.

“Most inept company that I have ever encountered”

★☆☆☆☆

written by strodey1 on 09/09/2013

In chronological order; 1.) Reduced my overdraft by £400 without informing me in any way shape or form (claimed they didn't have to advise me)! 2.) Advised me on 3 occasions on the phone that a new credit card had been dispatched to me only on the 4th call to advise me I wasn't entitled to one. 3.) a. Paid £35 per month from my current account onto some-one else's credit card for months on end. b. compensated me for this twice in error and then insisted threateningly on the overpaid compensation back immediately! 4.) Asked them to stop a direct debit going to my credit card from my current account - did not do so despite telling me they would, therefore taking me over my agreed overdraft limit and subsequently increasing how much I was charged for my overdraft facility that month! 5.) Offer me loans on EVERY hone call only to then say I'm not eligible! 6.)a. No facility to reduce overdraft online. b. called to reduce my overdraft by x pounds and was asked umpteen questions about how long I'd lived at my current address, what shoe size I am etc etc and was told I was 'applying' for my overdraft to be reduced??! 7.) STILL waiting for them to repay my PPI 3 months after they agreed they were at fault...18 months after originally lodging a complaint to say I was mis-sold it!!
