I asked FC Direct to handle transfer of AUD to GBP from sale of my property in Australia. They advised me to do a forward exchange contract to lock in the current rate as it was heading south. I decided to do 50%, and was glad I limited it this way because the rate immediately started heading north. The way FC Direct calculated the forward rate was less than transparent, with no information on the deal note, and I still have a bad vibe that I did not get a good deal but I am unable to prove this or argue the point. When the balance came they advised me to change straight away as the rate was peaking. They may yet be right, but it's not proved to be the case so far. On refelction I am anxious that their "advice" was simply aimed at getting me to deal straight away. I made a mistake sending the funds from my conveyancer to FC Direct - I should have opened an AUD account with my own bank, which would have made it much easier to shop around. Once FC Direct had the funds, they told me the only thing they could do with them other than change them into another currency was to return them to the sender, so my bargaining position was impaired. I think if I had been better able to shop around I would have made another 2% or so on my money by exploiting competition between currency brokers.

I was speaking to a number of different currency companies but the friendly chap I was dealing with at Foreign Currency Direct led me to using them. Not only was the exchange rate I got excellent and saved me a lot of money compared to the banks but they talked me through the process in plain English which as I am no financial expert was a great relief. I used their service to buy a property in France and i transferred the deposit and then a larger payment and have been extremely happy on both occasions and so will continue to use them go forward and have already told two friends about them. Its not often I feel the urge to provide feedback on a company but having saved just over one thousand pounds on my currency purchase i felt that this was one occassion some praise was well deserved! My broker made sure i knew what was happening in the markets so i could make the decision on when to buy. I was also quite worried about sending such a large amount of money abroad but foreign Currency direct made it easy. i have already recommended them.
