“An aggressive know it all as per a previous comment! ”

I was on a friends motor cruiser moving down river when she started to run into the last of the flood tide (I forget to add an hour to the tide predictions). No problem my friend said there is a pub with landing stage round the bend, we'll stop for the last half an hour of flood, grab a drink and check out the menue for a meal on our return journey (my friend is retired from ships pilot service and has an offshore yacht masters ticket. He is also a qualified Marine surveyor). No sooner had we stopped when a man (Steve I assume from other reviews) came marching down the frontage and yelled this is a private mooring. Ok, we are just waiting out the last of the flood tide and hoping to get a drink and check out... The pubs closed and this is a private mooring, you wouldn.t just pull in on a private club mooring just down river would you!! Actually you have a right to pull in anywhere short term if you have a genuine problem, we did have another issue and were interested in the facilities. I am confident that they would have been fine. Well,is the mooring private when the pub is open my friend asked as we were hoping to check out the menu... look I want you off the mooring now I don,t want yo ere, this staging covers with the tide! Quite right but not on this tide as my somewhat experienced friend had already assessed! As we moved off there was more nastiness and my friend said "there's no need for that your welcome will be known widely throughout the boating community" I dont want yo any of yo he shouted. A mass of threats and abuse followed and the ladies heard him say "I'll see you down the river and sort you out"! The skippers attitude was maybe he's had a row with the wife or somebody has upset him let it go. However I am retired special service (which is why I stayed below), my family background is 30 years in hotels and catering and there is a way of communicating in business that this man is clearly not interested in. He came across as an aggressive know it all and I think the public should be aware of it!

couldnt disagree more i went to this inn for a meal today, i was warned health and safety issue with the health and sefety issue regards to the mooring to write a bad review about a pub that you havent even visited is beyond me and useless info the food was brilliant the staff also and the cod i had was the best i have ever tasted all prepared and cooked by the landlord on site couldnt ask for a better pub or location, in my opinion that review is entirely unfair and based on a personal annoyance of a situation rather than the pub or services,

I WILL be visiting this pub again and will be bringing friends to share this great little spot with them. trust me the food is fantastic i recommend the cod which was better than anywhere else i've been and 'ive been to quite a few.

Ryan.

regards Ryan.

“Brilliant food and barman”

★★★★★

written by on 24/06/2012

All our family went for Sunday lunch today and it was really nice. The steaks were fabulous and the lamb fell of the bone . My mom, who only eats small potions, had ham egg and chips and it was really nice and plenty of it . My dad struggled to eat the braised beef as its a large portion but absolutely gorgeous . The large half roast chicken dish my daughter had was lovely and the puddings were huge and homemade and very nice . Beer good, cider brilliant . A lovely meal . Barman Steve couldn't have been more helpful and the rest of the staff are very nice and very efficient . We all loved chickens and ducks steve is rearing . Lovely , we will be making it a regular for Sunday lunch .

“Great Beer and Food”

★★★★★

written by BristolianRobin on 03/06/2012

Visited the Coal House Inn Apperley in early June 2012 and had a great time. I recommend the Butty Bach it was a great pint of beer. We also ordered steak on a stone and Braised Beef. The Braised Beef was delicious and my wife really enjoyed the steak on a stone. There was more steak than we could easily manage. The Landlord was friendly and amusing and admittedly could chat for England but he was genuinely interested in whether we enjoyed the meal. Cant wait to go back again!

written by alan-g on 02/08/2011

My wife and i went to the Coal house recently on a Friday evening and we had a wonderful meal , the landlord & landlady were very nice people and a warm welcome was had, its a really lovely country pub with a beautiful garden its a shame we went in the evening it would have been lovely in the day to sit out in the garden right on the bank of the river Severn , all in all we couldnt fault the place and we will be returning very soon, for us its a little out of our way as we live in Cheltenham but its well worth the drive, a little gem of a place try it if you havent already you wont be disapointed Alan

written by Family Man on 11/07/2010

Tranquil, charming Pub/Inn situated at the dead end of a winding road, by the River Severn. Lots of outside seating and a lovely place to eat and chat whilst the sun's shining. Limited but nice variety of beers/ales/largers/ciders. Delicious selection of food on the regular menu and specials board. Steak On A Stone is their forte...... other tasty selections make their food offering a cut above your normal pub grub. The Brummie Landlord, Steve is a likeable, lively chap and you're sure to have a laugh and joke with him! Maybe a good idea to ring first during winter months, to see if they are open. Lots of parking space right outside.
