The Nokia 8850 is a very handy model with good features but a very bad quality display and speaker which stop working on a regular basis

The nokia 8850 is a brilliant phone but as with others my screen has died.

I have owned my nokia 8850 for approximately 12 months. There is no doubt that the phone is a good phone. It's a Nokia; what more can I say? No doubt nearly every other review has commented on the features of the phone, so I won't bother going into that - You know them all by now.
The 8850 is gorgeous. The backlight's colour is eye-catching and makes the phone stand out from the crowd. However, after 12 months of heavy use, the phone is showing signs of wear. The Nokia badge below the speaker is almost completely silver now as the black paint disappears day by day. The sliding cover has scratched the keys terribly. The scratches are very deep and have removed the chrome plating. They make the keys look dirty, which can be embarrassing! Although this is to be expected after 12 months of use, the scratches started to appear after 3 days. I also feel that you expect a better quality finish on a flagship model such as this.
The phone performs faultlessly on the whole. The software does hang from time to time, but this is extrememly rare and usually happens when I'm working faster than the phone... Good things come to those who wait!
If you buy your phones for their looks, then buy the 8850. It will still look good in years to come... provided you're gentle with it. If you want a phone that's more hard-wearing, then I suggest you buy the 8210 which has exactly the same software and has Xpress-on covers that can be replaced when they start to look shabby. Of course, you could always buy the new 8310 if you're willing to spend the ammount of money an 8850 costs.

the nokia 8850 fone straight up sucks major ass. it had no wap, it can only store 15 txt messages which is quite frankly very poor for a fone of this price. The backlight screen around the sides are too harsh on your eyes. The buttons are shaped to slim, to make a correct press i had to use the tip of my nails. When you want to dial a number because it had a slider over the keypad the fone becomes the same size as a 3210 plus the slider has a sharp bottom edges that digs into your palms. I hate this fone to use but it looks great, but i think the sony j70 looks better and its cheaper than this and unlike the j70 it has wap and can store 500 names this only can store 250 plus the j70 can store more txt msgs than the 8850. Compared to the 8310 this fone just doesnt have a chance, the 8310 has wap, better games like snowboarding and bumper, snake2. 8310 has voice recorder, radio, can store 150 msgs. I brought a 8850 on contract and took it back under my 14 day customer satisfaction guarantee and i swaped it for a 8310, best thing i ever done.

I bought one 8850 in Malaysia and there are 25 sms in my phone already. I don't know what happened to your phone for storing only 15 sms.
Written on: 28/11/2002
Exactly. Check out the phone before you buy and complain. Also, the number of SMS you can store will vary depending on the SIM card as they are stored on the SIM (possibly the phone can store some too).
Written on: 27/08/2002
I totally disagree with you. My mobile can store 30 SMS including pictures!!! Ok the phone don't have WAP but i think the problem is with you not the phone, you are the one who buy the phone and you should know all the specifications. You should also know the size of the phone and the key before hand rather than complaining after you bought it.

This nokia 8850 phone really is the dog's b******* of mobiles. Believe me when i say you will fall in luv with it, people will chat on about it not having enough features, i say garbage to that. It is a phone people. it is there to phone people, and text people, and it does these 2 things better than any phone i have ever seen, and to think that i bought this phone brand new, untouched for £75 6 months ago with NO contract, makes it all sooooo much sweeter. GEt this phone now, but don't get no contract cos they will rip you off.
PEACE
P.s THAT backlight really is a wonder to behold.

Just bought my new Nokia 8850 and all I can say is that this phone is daaaarrrrkkkkkkkk! If this phone were a woman it would be Sophie Blake, Kate Groombridge and Dido all rolled into one - Grrr!
More substantively the features are mainly in the Nokia 6110/50, 3210 etc vein. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing particularly revolutionary either. Only gripe, as mentioned, is that my old Nokia 7110 had a far greater sms capacity and speedier typeface, but so what? This phone's a babe!
written by Chris. on 01/01/2002
The Nokia 8850 is a very nice phone and it impresses people everywhere you go, but its too expensive for what it is. Fair enough it looks expensive but it has never been updated. It still does not have WAP or even snake II!! I only payed £65 for mine brand new from a vodafone dealer just before new year. I would never pay full price for a Nokia 8850.

my screen has died but the nokia 8850 mobile phone is top notch!

The Nokia 8850 is an excellent mobile phone, stunning looks, Infrared and built in modem makes it ideal for business travellers.
written by andy. on 02/12/2001
great phone, really gets the birds going when you pull this out down the pub. oozes class and appeal. handles great picking up a clear audible transmition. great to know that pay as you go people simply can't walk into a dealers and buy one on one 2 one urrrgh!
Written on: 03/12/2001
er why do you seem to think that pay as you go customers cannot get hold of these phones??? All they have to do is buy a offline 8850 and put their sim card in it so then it will be on pay as you go. Simple. Thats what I always do when I want a new phone because my pre pay tariff cannot be matched by ANY contract. Anyway no-one would want this phone now that the 8310 is out.
Written on: 11/08/2002
I'm sorry...but having read the review I disagree. this phone can easily be converted to pay as you go..as previously mentioned. As for being common...this phone is no way near worth the price stated...it is very outdated now and nokia don't make these models anymore as they have been discontinued. The flagship model and it does not even have wap....what an absolute joke. Beauty is defin skin deep with this phone..granted it looks good but if ppl and 'birds' are that shallow then....pretty much suited to each other.
Written on: 19/02/2002
Andy, you are right for sure. Pay as you go ruins phones as it is the chance for any random charver to get their hands on the phone. I had a V.3688 which cost me £380 back in summer 99' and I had to get rid of it last year because it came out on pay as you go. Although now bought a Nokia 8890 for the cred, as the 88XX are never going to come onto pay and go tariffs so there is no chance of being common.

I agree 100% with andys review. My girlfriend saw my 8850 in the boozer when we first met and we done the wild thing on the first night.
written by Ceejay. on 02/12/2001
I have had a Nokia 6210e for 14 months, and as a Business Phone this is the nuts, so I've kept it to use as a Carphone. But the Nokia 8850......you have a choice, buy a Ford Mondeo or a TVR. Good looking things COST MONEY, so if you want to blend in with the rest of the Nokia Nerds, go spend fifty quid on an 8210!!!
Written on: 11/08/2002
LOL...Why do ppl automatically assume that having this phone...somehow qualifies them for being special from sll the other nokia users. The basics are simple...it is a poor phone for the money involved..(unless you can but it cheap) and to myself and other tech savvy people out there..it never ceases to amuse us the attitude involved. When truly apart form the sleek design the 8310...T68i..6310i are far better prospects. This phone is not ALL THAT..far from it..save your money folks.

Yeah, I bought the phone for looks and size. It looks amazing, and it's tiny - smaller than the 6610 I bought last week (produced 3yrs after the 8850 appeared). The phone functions well for phone calls and texts. If you want the best looking phone ever made (and a LOT of people will agree with me here), and you don't use WAP/games/cameras, etc. Then this is the phone for you. If you need these features then buy a different phone. But what this phone does, it does well.

The Original review is accurate, the Guy who commented afterwards is totally wrong. I am assuming that the original review marked the phone on its sleek and stylish looks, as opposed to Feature/Benefits, which is all SOME people seem interested in. Its a Phone, you talk through it. If you want WAP/Bluetooth, go buy something else, but on appearance, I support the original comments!

Good looking phone, one to be seen with, but poor quality on basic functions, especially for the price.
written by Nick. on 03/11/2001
I LOVE this mobile phone :D This is a lovely phone, this is probably the nicest mobile on the market at the moment. The only (seriously, the only 'fault') would be the SMS feature. On the Nokia 7110, you could archive messages and hold like 150 texts. On the Nokia 8850, you can only hold 10 messages or something, which just takes getting used to.
Other than that minor complaint, this phone is the best!

9/10 for features!!!! You are kidding aint ya! I would probably give it four. The features on this fone went out with the arc just compare it to a modern fone like the 8310 and you will see what I mean. Hell the features on this fone are no better than those on a 3210.

hhmmmmmmmmmmmm cloysterpeteruk

does it matter what u would give the phone for features, who cares what features it has, oh no so i aint got snowboarding on my PHONE, but it looks amazing and the women love it, if u want features, 8310, if u want style and a bird, 8850 mmmkay!!!!

the nokia 8850 is the best mobile phone i reckon, the titanium case makes it look great. This phone is obviously one of those classic phones that would never fade away, and to prove it, have a look at the price... it has not dropped by much even though it has come out for a long time. And look at all the other phones, they have dropped rapidly in price.
The nokia 8850 remains the best and im sure it will for a long time... have you seen the GOLD EDITION of the nokia 8850? fab!!! but the thing is, i think it costs double the normal price! ouch!

Have found the phone to be fine after having it for 8 months. Very happy, can't see another yet that come close to its magic looks and style.

nokia phones are rubbish

Very Unuseful review. Got anything significant to say? Do you have one? has the screen 'died' on you? Saying that all Nokias are rubbish is a bit of a generalisation don't you think?
Written on: 09/01/2002
A completely biased and unhelpful review.

I guess you have burned your cash by buying user unfriendly Ericsson. So you cant afford to buy a nokia anymore. No use of bad-mouthing nokia coz the price wont fall, i tell you. My advice , next time when you finally saved enough, buy a Nokia. Its simply the Best.

i suppose you're the person who goes round all the ads saying bad things, well u should get a life, ive had 4 nokia phones, the 5110,3210, 7110 and now the 8210, and every single one has been so reliable.

Good design of Nokia 8850 - I used it and it seems much lighter and smaller, I used it for text messages and it types more quickly. It's good - buy it.

I had a Nokia 3210 and was genuinely happy with the value for money that it boasted. I just bought a nokia 8850 mobile second hand, for $650AUD, which would amount to about 300 pounds. After a few hours with the phone it has only really made me think that the Nokia 3210 is even better value for money. The 3210 boasts almost identical features, for a fraction of the price. However this is all relative, and at the time of release (Jun '99), the Nokia 8850 would have represented state of the art technology- (I presume it's due to be replaced soon). I, like most 8850 buyers, don't need the phone to feel good about myself, but for the moment 300 pounds is a steal for a phone that really does feel like something special, whilst allowing me access to the internet through my laptop, wherever I go. A major plus is the added exclusivity of having a phone that is uncommon and generally not imitated, but on the downside I think Nokia have released new phones (witness 3330 and 8250) since '99 which by far surpass the 8850's value.

I think i bought this Nokia 8850 for a better looking mobile phone; not for listening to mp3 or playing with stupid functions. I think Nokia 8850 is a great looking Mobile Phone.
