“A simple yet very effective little system”

★★★★★

written by on 28/10/2013

Having moved into a hard water area, I was interested in improving the house with a water-softener; reducing visible limescale build-up in the shower and around the taps etc, as well as reducing the damaging effects of limescale build-up in appliances. My parents demonstrated to bme their TwinTec machine at their home in Suffolk. This is their second TwinTec and was one of the first purchases after moving into their new house (the old one is still running in the old house). They swear by it and said their local installer was very good. Having 'Googled' TwinTec on google maps, I found UK Water Softeners to be my local installer (Woking, Surrey). After leaving an answer-phone message, the manager/owner returned my call the same day. He was happy to accommodate my late commuter schedule, and came around after work one day to talk me through the system and what I could have fitted. The work was able to be scheduled within a week and the quote was clear and complete. The plumber who turned up had been given ample time in his schedule to complete my job - a complex fit due to the location if the mains. The plumber did an excellent job, was clean, tidy and polite. He explained what he was doing and left the kitchen in an excellent state - even refitting a shelf that he had to cut around. One error in the initial spec of the job was discussed and the plumber altered the fit to incorporate the change - all at his own discretion and with no effect on the quote. The TwinTec system works seamlessly and I am very pleased with both the service provided and also the product that I have bought. A 5-star (9/10) for service and finish; my only issue having been the minor error in original spec. Overall: excellent.

“Still "Doing what it says on the tin"”

★★★★★

written by Johndennisw on 24/08/2013

After 18 months still working great and all my previous comments still apply. Have used only about half the salt blocks John Noakes of Thames Valley Softners had suggested we might use. Had a problem with the water tasting of salt after turning off the stop-cock to do some plumbing, but John told me to run the water for a minute or two and it was then back to normal. Great service.

“Simple and unobtrusive with good local sales and service”

★★★★★

written by on 05/08/2013

I have wanted a water softener for a long time but it's installation became a no-brainer when I replaced my kitchen and, on the recommendation of my contractor, I sought out a local supplier in my area (North Hampshire) for TwinTec S3. He supplied, we did the work. Service was immediate; installation was a breeze; I only lost half a cupboard for housing; and the unit is so unobtrusive that I have to make a point of checking it out occasionally. There is simply nothing to do by way of maintenance except to order replacement blocks of salt from time to time, lift a lid and pop them in. The great reassurance is that I no longer risk the inconvenience and cost of my built-in pipework seizing up with lime scale at some time in the future. I am confident that TwinTec is one of the 2 top brands on the market and have no doubt that water softening is an essential fact of life in this day and age. His sales and service clinched the deal for me.

“Life changing!”

★★★★★

written by shishy on 29/07/2013

The water softener is life changing, it is bloody amazing! My excema has disappeared, my skin is soft, I barely need much moisturiser. With softer skin, waxing my legs was easier, took less time and had about 50% less drag and resistance which is half the battle. I also used less wax and strips which will save money AND there was even less mess which is a pain to clear up afterwards. I need less hair products, feet which can be significantly drier than other parts of the body are less dry. Housework is a breeze, I feel like I am on roller skates when I do the housework. All cleaning products work amazingly well, dishes need less scrubbing. I went into WILKO and usually I would leave having spent £10 - 15 on cleaning products, well I ignored most things down the ailse because we no longer need them.

“North East Water Softeners”

★★★★★

written by neilsowerby on 21/05/2013

I purchased and moved into a Charles Church 6 bedroom home in December 2003.Over time I was getting tired of my appliances failing, irons every 9 months, kettles, dishwashers, washing machine, shower doors even a new boiler, all in 9 years! then one day a leaflet/flyer came through my door promoting water softeners. Being as cynical and sceptical as the next person I enquired into having a survey carried out. A gentleman from North East Water Softeners arrived, a pleasant enough chap with lots of information and water testers. I wasn't too shocked when he informed me that my water was as 'Hard as Mountain Goats Feet' and the tests confirmed it. I had seen all the lime deposits all over the house and was aware that it was basically killing my home and costing me a fortune in replacement appliances and fixtures etc. He was excellent, more of a Water Softener Broker to be quite honest,He offered me a range of softeners that wouldn't affect the Power Showers in the house. (We have 3 bathrooms) He advised on the initial and running costs of each system and their positive and negative traits.I made an informed decision and had the Twin Tec installed. Best thing that I have ever done and personally think it should have been installed when the house was built. Would have been more of an investment than fitted wardrobes that's for sure! The fitting fee is standard, he was here all day (nearly) and did an excellent tidy job, infact my wife didn't even know it had been installed. He has been out a couple of times since to 'tweak' the Twin Tecs to ensure it is running at there optimum level. Cannot fault the operation from start to finish, Kevin was/is pleasant, knowledgeable, professional and affable, and continues to provide an excellent after sales service which John Lewis would be proud of. My only regret is that I didn't get this installed when the house was built, it would have saved me a small fortune in appliance and fixture replacements. Its also an excellent selling feature for the house, its cleaner and there is no more hideous chalky lime deposits all over the place. Its a nice piece of kit, not obtrusive and fits neatly in the utility room. The salt tablets last about 4 weeks, so Value for Money? Definitely, Added Value? Yes, Regrets? Yes! Charles Church take note!

“It does the job, brilliantly well!”

written by on 14/05/2013

We started looking at water softeners as an option for the last couple of years. The water in the area where we live (Surrey) is so hard that scale deposits on anything that water touches in a matter of few days (sink, taps, shower enclosure, dishes, washing mashing). The task of keeping all this stuff clean is just daunting, especially with a toddler to look after. We looked around for comp[anise providing this softeners and the different technologies available out there. Mr Goody’s Twintec stood out with the speed of their reply, quality of the service and the price they quoted us with. We must admit that we were a bit reticent at first as these days companies tend to overstate the capabilities of their products. Once Mr Goody arranged for the apparatus to be fitted, I joke you not, the results were instantaneous. The water is a lot foamier when using soaps, shampoo etc, not more scale marks anywhere in the house, a lot less, I mean a lot, cleaning to do. We asked for a quote on a Friday, Mr Goody visited the same day in the afternoon for a demonstration and a quote, we called back on Sunday to arrange for the installation, and this was completed the following Tuesday. The job took just under 53 hours to complete. I would highly recommend this system and Mr Goody’s Twintec’s service. Regards Mr & Mrs Alane

“The best thing we ever bought!”

★★★★★

written by on 25/03/2013

We did wanted a water softener that regenerates when it needs to, not when the clock is set, especially as we are on a water meter! Combined with the fact that I did not really want to have to lug around a 25kg bag of salt when reloading, the TwinTec was the perfect choice. It requires no electricity and on average we use 1 pack of salt per month which is two 4kg blocks. [name removed] arranged everything from the initial survey to the installation. His service was excellent and my water softener was installed in a few hours. It took about a week for the whole house to have soft water. I would not want to miss it anymore, and do you want to know what my husband said? "The best thing we ever bought!"

“Best Purchase last Year”

★★★★★

written by brithomas42 on 10/02/2013

North East Water Softeners installed our Twin-Tec 3 softener in January last year (York Area). The difference in the water has been amazing. I have never enjoyed a bath so much!. The texture of the water is so much better and our appliances are so much cleaner. We should have installed one years ago. I like the fact that no electricity is employed by the system which is quiet and efficient. The installation was very professionally handled by North East Water Softeners and I recommended them to 2 friends both of whom went ahead with an installation and they are equally delighted as I. A 10 year guarantee is a very good element of the package, and the product is neatly designed and fits well into any suitable space.

“After Sales Service”

★★★★☆

written by SydRoni on 22/01/2013

We have had the TwinTec for over 10 years and it has proved a success from day one. The simplicity and effectiveness is amazing. No electrics, just place the rock salt blocks in the container (easily accessible - just lift the lid) and you're off. But any item like this is only successful if the after sales service is reliable. In this respect, Softwater Services has come up trumps over the years - not that the water softener itself has had any defects. iIt is the regular supply of salt which makes all the difference - always reliable. I have just had several blocks delivered despite heavy snowfalls in weather which has closed down many means of transport - AND it was delivered two days earlier than expected. Ten out of ten to Softwater Services!

“Appliances Last Longer”

★★★★★

written by lfwatson on 11/12/2012

Bought in 2003 and still going strong (2012). Purchased when moved into new property from Kevin Goody, Hampshire mainly to extended the life of my household appliances and the added bonus is also less clening of sinks and shower screens. I didn't believe it would fit into such a small undersink area but it did. The plumbing is neat and the installation fast. I continue to order my salt also from Kevin Goody as his delivery service is super fast - ordered through email and delivered the same day.

“Excellent product”

★★★★★

written by Johnstevens33 on 13/11/2012

Had the twin tec softener fitted by Kevin from North East Water softeners who is a real professional. Initial site visit was so impressive with their house demo he offered. We wer pe sold after that and ordered the unit, after just a few days we could see a Massive difference to the quality of the water it felt so different. The bathrooms are so much easier to clean, al the appliances have no scum marks and the kettle is spotless. Hot drinks even taste better. The system runs maintenance free and the salt blocks are so simple to install very few weeks, these new systems are the way to go, auto regeneration just looks after itself. A fantastic product and service would certainly recommend to anyone in a hard water area. Mr Stevens.

“Thankyou TwinTec”

★★★★★

written by sueconnor on 28/10/2012

We were very undecided about getting a water softener, I have had eczema all my life and wondered if this product would help. We first looked at a single unit supplied by our local plumber. Then we had TwinTec come to test our water and demonstrate sofenered water we were impressed. This double unit works continuesly,We had it istalled in the April. Over the next few weeks my skin lost its extream redness and dryness, I use far less conditioner and very little shampoo, washing up liqid also lasts for ages, the kettle does not scale up. All we do is top up the salt once a month, sometimes it lasts longer and that's it superb product. We have now moved and have taken it with us. I will not lie I still get the odd flare up but my skin has improved 90% . Very pleased with TwinTec, we also had a drinking tap installed and that is very good also, bottled water on tap. It's all win win. Sue and Alan Connor

“Best of British engineering design.”

★★★★★

written by A.Brooke on 30/08/2012

I had one of these incredible little units installed soon after we moved into our new home, in a moderately hard water area, ten years ago. I knew from past experience that those white marks on taps, sinks and shower and everywhere touched by tap water, meant that the new shine would not last long and the value of our new house would suffer unless action was taken. So, after looking at the available options I was most impressed by TwinTec design and had one fitted very neatly and efficiently, by UK water Softeners. It's may not be the cheapest water softener around, but in my opinion it is easily the best. The fact that it actively monitors water usage before activating the refresh cycle, and uses water power rather than needing a separate electrical supply to drive timers and other complex (and breakable) parts, is quite brilliant. The TwinTec is also more compact and user friendly than most other water softeners. It takes up just a half size kitchen cupboard space, and block salt is very easily fed in when needed (about once a month in our case), it's far easier to store and less messy to fit than granular salt. Our unit has worked none stop and completely trouble free, for the past ten years now, making clean water fittings and almost zero maintenance something which we take very much for granted. The only associated item that has needed changing in that time, was a little drinking water tap that we had installed, which is independent of the softener and still uses untreated mains water. Being on hard water it is inclined to choke up and sometimes has to be de-scaled. A reminder of all the trouble the little TwinTec machine is constantly saving us elsewhere. My best investment ever.

“GREAT SERVICE FROM KEVIN GOODY”

We are so pleased with our Water Softener, purchased a year ago, being neat enough to fit under our sink and it certainly saves money on washing powders and white goods! Your service was excellent and it was nice to deal with someone with, not only a pleasing personality, but also very professional. The Plumber you arranged was excellent too and it's nice to have good customer service afterwards also, when we order our salt. We have spread the news that you come on good recommendation and hopefully you will gather more sales from this! Marion

“TWINTEC S3 WATER SOFTENER”

★★★★★

written by DFLEGGET on 14/08/2012

My brother told me about TwinTec, since he had a water softener fitted in his house in Liphook and is a complete convert to softened water. He thought his came from a firm in Havant, but that was too far away. So I googled TwinTec and up came UK Water Softeners in local Frimley. A phone call later and Kevin Goody was round to look at my flat within a couple of hours. 30 minutes later we had done and dealt. That was Thursday and it was fitted at 9.am. the following Monday. In the meantime I had had a confirmatory letter saying when the system would be fitted. I cannot recommend the service I have had from Kevin highly enough. Most people who know me are aware that I am totally intolerant of inefficiency but this was the diametric opposite! I shall certainly let all my friends and acquaintances know of this very simple device. It may cost more but in my experience you get what you pay for in this life. What is more if you move you can take the unit with you, if you want! Donald, Weybridge

“First Class Service”

★★★★★

written by on 10/08/2012

My wife had misgivings about installing a water softener but she now has done a turnabout and says she doesn't know how she managed without one. The plumber spent sometime ensuring the water softener was installed under the sink unit so we did not have to give up cupboard space. Salt usage is as predicted by Twin Tec and after sales service has probed to be quick and trouble free. We have no regrets about buying a water softener and didn't realise what great benefits there are in using soft water. Thank you Kevin Goody of Twin Tec!

I have had an s2 since 2008. Has worked well and never had any issues. We are moving soon and I was considering getting a new softener such as the s4 and leave the old one behind given its age but what are the differences between my old s2 and the new s4? Design/size?, improved water use?? Or should I just take the s2 with me. I assume after 10 years use it's not going to be as efficient perhaps as it once was? Thanks

I had a new Greenstar boiler installed last year and the installer didn't think there would be a problem. If you are worried then you should contact Worcester directly if they don't have the correct answer then no-one will. If it's a System boiler then the most important thing is to put the correct level of corrosion prevention fluid into the boiler and check it annually, which is what the service engineer should do. If it's a COMBI then the softer water might cause the heat exchanger to fail sooner, but if your water is hard then the lime-scale build-up will most likely cause the system to fail earlier than the softened water would. There is no reason why a Twintec softener should be any different to any other brand of ion-exchange softener, they all use the same technique.
Asked by Fortifyme on 25th March 2019 Report this content
My Twintec water softener has stopped working twice now in less than two years. The installer said it was due to chlorine in the water, and changed the “beads”. I read that the only way to avoid chlorine stopping your softener from working was to have a filter fitted before the mains water reached the filter. Is this correct? If so, why aren’t customers advised of this, and why do softeners not have such a filter incorporated in them.

If your on mains water then it should not taste stagnant , why are you drinking water from your unit that's what the drinking water tap is for. I would take a sample of water before the unit and one from the unit and ask your water authority to test. If your sure it's from the unit I would by pass and call in Twin-Tec but they will charge £100+ just to have a look, I use a firm from Ipswich that only charge £39 to come and have a look. Stagnant water is not good at any time , you need to get this sorted.

My water tastes perfectly good. Have yo been away for a long period of time? If so then you need to flush the system through. Run off a half a gallon of water and try again. If it still tastes stagnant then use the valves to by-pass the softener. If the water still tastes stagnant then it is a problem with your water supplier. If after bypassing the softener the water tastes good then you should contact your installer because you have a problem.

Normally you would not be drinking water that has passed through the softener. You need a separate drinking water tap that by-passes the softener, Your installer should have mentioned this to be honest. The softener will make the water taste slightly salty its normal behaviour and by design.

Hi. Back to the water softeners - its a salty business. I have a Twintec probably an S2. Over the past few months I have noticed on occasions that the water flow from both the shower, kitchen and basin taps will be lower than usual. Anglian Water have been and checked the mains pressure and flow (in excess of 25lts/min which is good). When I checked the input water flow to the Twintec the flow was also more than 25lts/min. However, the softened water flow from the kitchen tap, directly above the Twintec, was down to 10lts/min. That flow rate is what I have accepted as normal/usual at my house. When the flow drops it will be even less than 10lts/min. (The Anglian Water agent couldn't be expected to wait until the flow drops again, and he has taken the flow meter with him).  Well, that was a mouthful! What I hope to discover is what the usual, maximum reduction in flow is for a healthy Twintec, then I may be able to make some assessment as to the health of my installation. I welcome any advice related to, perhaps, similar experiences with a Twintec and/or any resolutions/remedies.

How can I reduce the softness of the water - the TwinTec S3 we have inherited with this house produces very very soft water, much softer than we have ever had with previous water softeners, making showers, baths etc a hazard as they are so slippery. Is there a tester kit I can use to see if it is over softening the water?

Yes you can get a test kit, if you go on line to the Trin Tec site you will find your nearest installer or suppler where you can get the test kit and the readings you should be getting. I would suggest you do this first as Twin Tec will charge you £100 + just to come out and tell you what needs doing if anything. A lot of good company,s like" Triden showers" will charge there customers £120 to come out and look at a shower but the cost will include any parts and labour that are required but not Twin Tec. That's why I would not recommend Twin Tic stopped working just a short time outside warranty. But yes you can get a test kit. Hope this helps.

1) - Filter question - I suggest not as tap water depending on the area generally has a reasonable amount of 'Hardness' which has health benefits. You could use a Jug type filter if needs be. 2) - Salt Tablet costs - 10 x packs (2 x blocks in each pack) locally ordered for £44

I have a Twin Tec 2 water softener. I regularly use a hardness checker kit to check the softness of the water. Using 2 different kits, 1 tablet form and the other liquid, I am repeatedly getting readings of 250+ parts per million. I have reported this to my supplier who says that reading is fine and denotes soft water. I understand from Harveys customer services that machines are set to 20 parts per million. Can you please explain therefore how my readings can be so high and yet acceptable to a company supplying your equipment?

I think the water you are hearing going through is being used to regenerate the device. It’s generally a bit of a trickle. If it’s more than that get the installers back. EXPLANATION. There are two softening units in the device. When unit 1 is “clogged” the device switches to unit 2 to do the softening while unit 1 is cleaned. This is called regeneration. First unit 1 is filled with a salt (brine) solution. The brine is made by dissolving the salt blocks in the water in the base of the unit. After the brine has sat in unit 1 for a while, it will have regenerated. It is then discharged down the drain and unit 1 flushed through with clean water from unit 2 to remove all salt traces. Unit 1 will then sit waiting until for unit 2 to become “clogged” when it will then take on the process of softening whilst unit 2 is regenerated. This is very efficient as it ensures that you will always have a unit available to do the softening but generation will only take place when the unit is deemed to be “clogged”. Single unit devices usually regenerate overnight on a timed basis whether it is needed or not. They also cannot provide softened water during regeneration. Hope this makes sense.

The softener will recycle every now and then depending on your water usage. During this operation water will go down the drainage pipe for 5/15 minutes. My TwinTec recycles every 2 days or so.

We had a new one installed last week and wonder how long the blocks of salt last? The blocks have already dropped below the clear cover - seems every other day they drop down. How far do they go? Our last one (at a different area) was a Culligan and 25 kg of salt tablets lasted more than a month. The water is not as hard here, so is there an adjustment somewhere (we have no paperwork or instructions) as our water usage must be similar?

We are in a very hard water area - Suffolk. There are 2 of us in the house (retired) and 2 blocks usually lasts 3 - 4 weeks depending on water consumption. You should replace the block when the red line on the back of the reservoir becomes visible. One block may dissolve faster than the other - but as they share the brine reservoir it does not matter. It is difficult to compare salt usage with your previous model as it used a different technology. If anything your new one should use less as it only recycles when needed. The amount of water that passes through the unit before it re-cylces is set at installation. It should be calibrated so that when the resin in one tank is “full” it switches to the other and recycles the first one. It is the frequency of the recycling that determines salt usage. I.e. in a hard water area, less water passes through the unit before a re-cycling as there is more hardness to remove. In a softer area, more water goes though before this is necessary, thus re-cycling and salt usage will be less frequent. However, the same about of salt is used at each re-cylcling regardless of the hardness in your area - it just happens less frequently in a soft water area. You cannot adjust it yourself. If you doubt the accuracy of the calibration, get the installer back.

We live in Essex so water is hard we are a family of 3 our system uses 2 blocks at a time and we replace them once a month our water consumption is quite high 3 power showers a day plus at least 2 wash loads per day . plus the dishwasher going twice a day so we think once month is quite economical hope this helps

The cradle which holds the salt blocks is removable. It can be heavy if 2 large blocks of salt are in it. Remove the salt blocks from the cradle. Lift the lid to the unit and the salt cradle can be removed completely and washed and rinsed in clean non soapy water if necessary. If there is any salt residue on the wall of the salt “tank” area, I use a plastic scraper of the type designed to defrost fridges etc. This will prevent damage to the unit. The salt scrapings can be left to drop into the saline solution at the bottom where they will be dissolved and used for the next re-cycle. Put the cradle back and secure the back edge under the front of the lid. Replace salt blocks. Job done. Be careful to ensure that NO contaminants of any kind are introduced to the saline area - this might impair the ability of the resin in the softener to work. Use clean hands or wear latex gloves to ensure that you do not introduce a contaminant or infection into the unit. Treat it as though it is a food preparation area. NB After many years of use - I have never found it necessary to do this. Salty walls will not impair the operation unless they prevent the blocks dropping to the bottom of the saline unit.

I didn't realise at first why the Salt blocks were sticking in position until I felt the sides of the salt chamber. I tend to clear the salt by hand every time a replacement is needed and that seems to work well. It's a bit of a manual process but it's better knowing the salt block function correctly.

OK. When is it doing that? When water is passing through or during the “re-cycle” process? First off, try to determine if this is something straightforward. Try removing the salt cover / salt basket when it is buzzing. remove the rear top cover. Try moving / holding different bits of the unit. It might just be a vibration causing something to rattle / buzz. Move it slightly. If anything simple is causing a mechanical buzz - you might find you can stop it. If it doesn’t, it might be the “propellers” in the metering device that are either catching or worn. If that is the case you will need to get professionals in. Depending on the age of the machine and the suppliers it might still be under guarantee. I think ours was for 5 years - but I’m not absolutely certain.

Our previous model was not the TT2. However it did fail after 5 years. The TT3 is an improvement in many ways, but the point of having the softener is to remove hardness from the water. We knew our old unit was due for replacement as it stopped doing this. Buy a water softness testing kit - they are about £10.00 from Amazon. If it is still working - stick with it. It’s worth noting that over a period of time the resin will deteriorate and not be as efficient. However, a quality installer will be able to remedy this by changing the cogs in the meter so that it re-cycles more frequently. Downside to this is that you will use more salt. Salt is cheaper than new kit!

You are using one block per tank so it you leave one empty the resin balls in that tank will just get scaled up. I believe the idea of the twin tanks is that you get continuous soft water even when the resin beads are being cleaned through in one tank it uses the other tank to provide you with uninterrupted softened water.
Report this content widd1 Written on: 17/08/2015
In simple terms - YES. The previous answer is partly correct. There are two resin tanks that do the softening. They do this alternatively. When one resin tank has softened enough water and can soften no more the device switches to the other resin tank. The device knows how much can be softened as there is a metering device to measure the volume of the water that has passed through the tank. Once “full” the first resin tank is then “re-generated” by soaking the resin in a brine solution whilst the second tank takes over the softening process. After soaking in brine, it is rinsed and then sits on standby until the second tank is “full” when it will switch back to the first tank. The re-generation process uses a saturated salt solution which is where the salt blocks come in. If there is only 1 salt block, it does not matter - it will still take the same amount of salt from that 1 block as it would from 2 blocks to make the brine solution up to the required strength. There is no saving to be made by running the device on one salt block. They both sit in the same reservoir and use the same volume of water and salt regardless of the number of salt blocks in the reservoir. Ergo, one block will get used up twice as quickly as two blocks. My mind wonders why you would even consider just 1 block as they are supplied in pairs. This is so that you don’t have to do the re-fill job as frequently.

Hi Thank you for answering my question folks. The reason I asked this question widd1, was NOT because I only use 1 block at a time but to see if waiting until block 2, which ALWAYS diminishes at a slower rate and does not always need replacing at the same time. I want to wait till BOTH blocks have, as good as finished ,before replacing both blocks instead of only Replacing one at a time, that's all.

Fact: Our TwinTec water softener is in the utility room. There is also a sink in there, supplied with softened water. Fact: Occasionally over the last two years the water at that sink tastes very salty. So we have stopped using it for the dog. Fact: Earlier this year we had a leak under the floor where the pipe ran from the softener area to the sink. The pipe was perforated with lots of tiny holes. It was not cheap to have this dealt with. Fact: Also earlier this year we had the TwinTec given an overhaul and most of the operating parts and chemicals replaced. This was not cheap either. Question: Might the brine outlet pipe of the TwinTec have got blocked and caused brine flow into the pipe to the sink which then corroded that pipe to cause it to leak? If so, what should we do about this? How can we tell in the future if it gets blocked again?
