“Why did we not have one before!!”

★★★★★

written by Gubbs49 on 02/07/2014

After having a new cloakroom & bathroom which were quite expensive it would have been a no brainer to watch the rooms deteriorate under the dreaded limescale. So a water softener was the obvious solution. What a good choice we made having a TwinTec S3 fitted. Such a difference in the water quality and the new rooms are so easy to keep clean, nearly 3 months gone and still looking brand new. To be honest paying £300 to have it fitted was expensive for a couple of hours work. Anyone with a little plumbing knowledge would cope easily. Fed up with limescale, fit a softener.

Went for this one as it works on water consumed not a timer so no wasted salt or water. Proved quite reliable, one failure in 5 years. Blocks so much easier to handle than other forms of salt - have had a conventional timer controlled granular salt one previously. It also fitted under the sink which saved a cabinet compared to the alternative we were offered by another supllier.

“Efficient, reliable, user friendly”

★★★★★

written by Dempster08 on 20/06/2014

Had this softener in a previous property. Was highly delighted with its efficiency especially the elimination of lime scale. Got an unvented system now within a hard water area and the old problem of lime scale had returned. Having spent a fortune on chemical removers of lime scale decided it was wiser and more hygienic to have the Twintec fitted. So far so good. Fitted the latest Twintec S3 which is money well spent. You need to accept this item is not cheap because you need to buy additional salt which can be cheaper if you buy in bulk. Get a friend to share! It's longer term benefit outweighs the initial cost. Customer service very good, supportive and no quibble assistance.

“great water softner”

★★★★★

written by Nelson488 on 12/06/2014

I had been wanting to purchase a water softener for some time and looked at various types available. I have definitely made the right choice in this model as is so easy to use and the salt being in blocks is much easier than the old bags of salt which are so heavy to carry. I like the fact that there is no electricity and no complicated set up needed; it just looks after itself. You only have to put the blocks of salt in and then you can forget about it. Installation was very quick and the company was very efficient and able to answer any questions I had. Wish had bought one earlier!

“Great system, great service”

★★★★★

written by NoneThankTa on 09/05/2014

There are so many different water softeners, at such different prices. Our friends have a cheaper system and regret it. The TwinTec is extremely simple, we have had it for three months now and all we have to do is insert the new salt blocks around once a month. No dials, no settings, this simple but clever system does it all itself. There is no pressure drop thanks to the twin cylinders which operate in parallel at peak demands. It is also quiet and compact. And the advisor was brilliant, no hard sell, just gave us the facts and excellent customer care. The installation was excellent, Martin went out of his way to help and went the extra mile without asking for extra money. This is a 20 year investment, well worth paying a little extra for the excellent quality.

“Really great results”

written by soul1900 on 30/04/2014

We purchased a water softener form .Twin Tec at the end of March and were very impressed with the service and the installation engineer. We have been renovating our 1960's house for the last 3 years and as we live in a very hard water area were concerned about lime scale build up on new sanitary ware and taps. As soon as the softener was installed we noticed a huge difference in the reduction of limescale residue within a week. This means there will be less build up in newly laid pipe work as well. We also find we do not need so much shower gel and shampoo. Also our skin feels a lot better. We would not hesitate to recommend this company to friends and family.

“TwinTec Top Marks”

★★★★★

written by 417Townsend on 15/04/2014

We had a TwinTec softener for many years, transferring it to our present house about 6 years ago. It has always been a fantastic buy, requiring no maintenance or service, just Salt, and performing perfectly. All good things wear out eventually, so when this one looked like it was not 'cycling' properly, we contacted the original company (TwinTec Soft Water Supplies Limited---old sticker on the side, from when they installed it after the last move) and asked for an engineer. To our surprise they knew who we were, what model we had, when we first bought it, and when we moved it. The fitter/engineer, was prompt, polite, tidy and thorough. He did *not* pressure us to buy a newer model (we are sensitive to those tactics), but prepared us for the cost of repair---the old model is no longer made, "but we can look out for the parts". We asked to see the specification for the latest equivalent model (the TwinTec S3) and saw it uses less water and salt, has a higher flow rate and more efficient regeneration. So we asked for the price. This company not only gave us an 'upgrade discount' they replaced everything: plumbing, pipework, re-routed waste outflow, and all done in a couple of hours, in one week after our original phone-call. No disruption to the rest of the house water supply. No extra charge. This softener is not the cheapest you can get, but it has a proven track record over decades, and a superb workforce behind it. It is great technology, is literally maintenance-free (apart from salt blocks), and lasts for many many years. We cannot praise it or them enough.

“Twin Tec water softener fitted and working well”

★★★★★

written by LeaScott on 05/04/2014

UK water softeners and the Twin Tec was recommended to me by my son who has had a unit for over 9 years, Kevin promptly arranged to come and see us and explained everything to us. We live in a very hard water area and have had problems with our main bath tap filter clogging up with scale and also the kettle always becoming clogged and regularly needing descaling, I cant imagine what the insides of the pipes are like. He was able to arrange fitting within the week, this was done really well, the unit has been positioned under a cabinet next to the sink, so that it takes up the minimum of space, the plumbing has been done really well with isolation valves placed so that they are easily reached. The installation was done in a couple of hours and area left tidy and clean. We are also pleased that we have a separate drinking water tap which matches our kitchen sink so that we can have hard water for drinking. A new outside tap was fitted as well for car washing or watering the garden. Using the supplied test kit we have been able to see that the whole house is now being supplied with soft water, have already started to save on salt and other blocks for the dish washer and washing machine, we also only need small amounts of shampoo and soap. We now look forward to the benefits for years to come and can highly recommend UK Water softeners to anyone looking for a water softener.

“Twin Tec Softener fitted by UK Water Softeners”

★★★★★

written by engtechst on 26/03/2014

We have had a Twin Tec softener for 9 years, it was fitted by the team from UK Water Softeners. Firstly Ken and his team represent the product clearly and without lots of jargon. The instillation was carried out to a high standard. The Twin Tec system has been great, it really does what is says on the box, it works without any fuss or bother, we sometimes notice the slight sound of the system flushing the filters; however it just gets on and does its job. The simple method of loading the salt is easily done and my 5 year old granddaughter thinks it is fun to feed the softener. Using salt blocks in place of loose salt is so much better, as there is no mess and it is a quick and simple job. Our area in Hampshire has very hard water, before we had the unit fitted, we had to buy salt for the dish washer, additives for the washing machine. We have not needed any of these since the Twin Tec softener was fitted. A good feature of the system is that it has a two cylinder filter so that there is continuous supply of soft water to the whole house. There is no electrical connections as the system is driven by the water pressure so is really good. If you are interested in a water softener, I think that this is a good unit to look at and can recommend the team at UK Water Softeners. Andy Scott, Andover Hampshire

“Excellent water softener”

★★★★★

written by on 10/03/2014

We actually have the predecessor to the S3 (TwinTec) but have had the unit for several years and it is still working very well. We bought our TwinTec water softener from UK Water Softeners as we live in a particularly hard water area. The installation process was very straight forward as the mains water comes in to our house under the kitchen sink. The UK Water Softeners plumber made the necessary modifications to the plumbing very quickly & positioned the unit in the corner of the cupboard. The positioning makes it very easy to add block salt when required. The TwinTec unit itself has performed extremely well over the years and we have absolutely no limescale build-up anywhere, which is particularly noticeable on the shower heads and around the sinks. It makes cleaning considerably easier and less time consuming. UK Water Softeners was extremely helpful during the buying process, answering all of our questions. All of our replacement salt is delivered to our door extremely quickly & with no hassle. I can definitely recommend the company if you are looking to get a water softener installed & if you live in a hard water area, you won’t regret it!

“simple, easy, effective, should've done it years ago”

★★★★★

written by on 07/03/2014

so easy the kids actually keep it working. this simple little box of tricks sits under out kitchen sink, takes up a little amount of space, but packs one heck of a punch in what it does. we no longer both de-scaling the kettle, coffee machine, showers, shower glass, dishwasher etc. And it makes cleaning the car so much easier, and still supplies enough water press to keep the pressure washer happy. we've had the TwinTec for many years no and still don't have any scale on any tap. and it only uses salt when we use water, therefore if we're away there is no 'running cost' it simply needs to be plumbed in just wish i'd done it sooner!

Very happy all round with the service provided. Good communication and we felt really at home with everything the advisor told us. We had other quotes from the local area but these felt like a sales push and she didn't come across like that. We made our minds up there and then to proceed and we were comfortable with what we were getting. Excellent contact from the plumber and he did a great job. Al in all superb service and would definitely recommend to others.

“TWIN TEC WATER SOFTENER LONG TERM 10 YEAR REVIEW”

★★★★★

written by rasd4651 on 03/02/2014

Coming from a soft water area I noticed more than anyone the destructive power that hard water has on your home and skin. Within months taps, showers, dishwashers, washing machines, shower screens, baths, toilets and kettles are ruined unless you spend an absolute fortune on cleaning and de-scaling products, not to mention the endless scrubbing. We changed our kitchen 10 years ago and bought a Twin Tec water softener. I wanted one before I went on to change our bathroom, ensuite and downstairs WC. WOW what a transformation. Here we are 10 years on and our bathrooms, taps, kettle, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, 2 power showers, toilets etc are still like new condition. We only clean them once every two weeks because they stay clean. We have never used any de-scaling products. Our skin doesn't dry out with the constant need for moisturiser. We actually changed our kettle after 7 years because it was worn on the outside but inside it was perfectly clean. I know it sounds a lot to pay for a softener but we paid £1050, 10 years ago. Coupled with the price of salt its cost us averaged over the 10 years £144 per year. But we have saved that on cleaning products alone. And most of our appliances would have been replaced by now and who knows what that would have cost. Our Boiler is 24 years old and still in perfect condition. Thats because the water softener just doesn't give you soft water it cleans existing pipe work and scale out of your boiler. This sounds like a sales pitch but I cannot stress enough the benefits of a softener. If you are the sort of person who like me wants clean bathrooms, low maintenance, no unwanted plumber bills, perfect showers year after year, this is for you. There are loads of pros to this and the only disadvantage I can see is the initial cost. Once you are past that you'll never be without one.

“Twintec South Coast - First Class Customer Service”

★★★★★

written by MrDKelly on 28/01/2014

We recently had our softener fitted at Twintec South Coast and the service was first class. There were some complications around how our softener could be installed due to our kitchen being refitted 18 months earlier, but he explored all avenues with professionalism and enthusiasm and was not looking to find any short cuts. All options with pro's and con's for each were fully explained. We would have no hesitation in recommending Twintec South Coast to others.

“Best Buy I've Made; EVER!”

★★★★★

written by qman9000 on 04/01/2014

I bought my 'Twin-tec' from the Camberley/Frimley [Hampshire and Surrey areas] around two years ago now. In that time I can honestly say; "Why didn't I buy this Water Softener sooner???" These devices are the un-sung 'Must haves" in a home. The 'Twin-tec' especially uses no electricity, makes no noise, and produces no mess. So what's not to like about this product? So where do you start with this devices virtues? Perhaps the easy of installation? We've had ours installed twice. The original installation, and re-installation when we had our Kitchen revamped. On both occasions the Plumbers fitted the 'Twin-tec' where we wanted it without any problems. On the second occasion I could not believe how quick the installation was. How about the cost savings? With a Water Softener there's no need to add salt to the Dishwasher. Soap and detergents for everyday use just goes further. Kettles don't have scale that needs heating first so heat up quicker, and the same goes for the Hot Water systems. Even taking into account the cost of salt; we saved £5/month in the first year, and now we have a Dishwasher the savings per month will be higher. The system is excellent but without the back-up of a truly professional salesman, (who also provides the aftercare service), I would not be as happy as I am with the 'Twin-tec' system. I salute you. “TwinTec review”

★★★★★

written by on 24/11/2013

We had a TwinTec water softener fitted by the team and were so impressed by their quality of service and the product, when we moved house we had them fit another one in the new property. Their process end to end was professional, polite, efficient, timely, neat and tidy. From their initial survey and quote, to the quality installation. The twintec softener they fitted is smaller, more effective, quieter and uses less salt. I would have no hesitation in using them and this product again. I would recommend them to anyone considering having a softener fitted.

We are moving soon and I was considering getting a new softener such as the s4 and leave the old one behind given its age but what are the differences between my old s2 and the new s4? Design/size?, improved water use?? Or should I just take the s2 with me. I assume after 10 years use it's not going to be as efficient perhaps as it once was? Thanks

I had a new Greenstar boiler installed last year and the installer didn't think there would be a problem. If you are worried then you should contact Worcester directly if they don't have the correct answer then no-one will. If it's a System boiler then the most important thing is to put the correct level of corrosion prevention fluid into the boiler and check it annually, which is what the service engineer should do. If it's a COMBI then the softer water might cause the heat exchanger to fail sooner, but if your water is hard then the lime-scale build-up will most likely cause the system to fail earlier than the softened water would. There is no reason why a Twintec softener should be any different to any other brand of ion-exchange softener, they all use the same technique.
Asked by Fortifyme on 25th March 2019 Report this content
My Twintec water softener has stopped working twice now in less than two years. The installer said it was due to chlorine in the water, and changed the “beads”. I read that the only way to avoid chlorine stopping your softener from working was to have a filter fitted before the mains water reached the filter. Is this correct? If so, why aren’t customers advised of this, and why do softeners not have such a filter incorporated in them.

I’m lucky as it’s only 2 years old and the owners worked abroad a lot. It has no transferred warranty or suchlike and I live in Staffordshire, the unit came originally from the Southampton/ Bournemouth area. How can I get a decent priced installer? Any ideas? If your on mains water then it should not taste stagnant , why are you drinking water from your unit that's what the drinking water tap is for. I would take a sample of water before the unit and one from the unit and ask your water authority to test. If your sure it's from the unit I would by pass and call in Twin-Tec but they will charge £100+ just to have a look, I use a firm from Ipswich that only charge £39 to come and have a look. Stagnant water is not good at any time , you need to get this sorted.
Report this content John_Bgood Written on: 15/06/2018
My water tastes perfectly good. Have yo been away for a long period of time? If so then you need to flush the system through. Run off a half a gallon of water and try again. If it still tastes stagnant then use the valves to by-pass the softener. If the water still tastes stagnant then it is a problem with your water supplier. If after bypassing the softener the water tastes good then you should contact your installer because you have a problem.

Normally you would not be drinking water that has passed through the softener. You need a separate drinking water tap that by-passes the softener, Your installer should have mentioned this to be honest. The softener will make the water taste slightly salty its normal behaviour and by design.
Asked by Lojong on 21st February 2018 Report this content
Hi. Back to the water softeners - its a salty business. I have a Twintec probably an S2. Over the past few months I have noticed on occasions that the water flow from both the shower, kitchen and basin taps will be lower than usual. Anglian Water have been and checked the mains pressure and flow (in excess of 25lts/min which is good). When I checked the input water flow to the Twintec the flow was also more than 25lts/min. However, the softened water flow from the kitchen tap, directly above the Twintec, was down to 10lts/min. That flow rate is what I have accepted as normal/usual at my house. When the flow drops it will be even less than 10lts/min. (The Anglian Water agent couldn't be expected to wait until the flow drops again, and he has taken the flow meter with him).  Well, that was a mouthful! What I hope to discover is what the usual, maximum reduction in flow is for a healthy Twintec, then I may be able to make some assessment as to the health of my installation. I welcome any advice related to, perhaps, similar experiences with a Twintec and/or any resolutions/remedies.

How can I reduce the softness of the water - the TwinTec S3 we have inherited with this house produces very very soft water, much softer than we have ever had with previous water softeners, making showers, baths etc a hazard as they are so slippery. Is there a tester kit I can use to see if it is over softening the water?

Yes you can get a test kit, if you go on line to the Trin Tec site you will find your nearest installer or suppler where you can get the test kit and the readings you should be getting. I would suggest you do this first as Twin Tec will charge you £100 + just to come out and tell you what needs doing if anything. A lot of good company,s like" Triden showers" will charge there customers £120 to come out and look at a shower but the cost will include any parts and labour that are required but not Twin Tec. That's why I would not recommend Twin Tic stopped working just a short time outside warranty. But yes you can get a test kit. Hope this helps.

1) - Filter question - I suggest not as tap water depending on the area generally has a reasonable amount of 'Hardness' which has health benefits. You could use a Jug type filter if needs be. 2) - Salt Tablet costs - 10 x packs (2 x blocks in each pack) locally ordered for £44

I have a Twin Tec 2 water softener. I regularly use a hardness checker kit to check the softness of the water. Using 2 different kits, 1 tablet form and the other liquid, I am repeatedly getting readings of 250+ parts per million. I have reported this to my supplier who says that reading is fine and denotes soft water. I understand from Harveys customer services that machines are set to 20 parts per million. Can you please explain therefore how my readings can be so high and yet acceptable to a company supplying your equipment?

I think the water you are hearing going through is being used to regenerate the device. It’s generally a bit of a trickle. If it’s more than that get the installers back. EXPLANATION. There are two softening units in the device. When unit 1 is “clogged” the device switches to unit 2 to do the softening while unit 1 is cleaned. This is called regeneration. First unit 1 is filled with a salt (brine) solution. The brine is made by dissolving the salt blocks in the water in the base of the unit. After the brine has sat in unit 1 for a while, it will have regenerated. It is then discharged down the drain and unit 1 flushed through with clean water from unit 2 to remove all salt traces. Unit 1 will then sit waiting until for unit 2 to become “clogged” when it will then take on the process of softening whilst unit 2 is regenerated. This is very efficient as it ensures that you will always have a unit available to do the softening but generation will only take place when the unit is deemed to be “clogged”. Single unit devices usually regenerate overnight on a timed basis whether it is needed or not. They also cannot provide softened water during regeneration. Hope this makes sense.

The softener will recycle every now and then depending on your water usage. During this operation water will go down the drainage pipe for 5/15 minutes. My TwinTec recycles every 2 days or so.

We had a new one installed last week and wonder how long the blocks of salt last? The blocks have already dropped below the clear cover - seems every other day they drop down. How far do they go? Our last one (at a different area) was a Culligan and 25 kg of salt tablets lasted more than a month. The water is not as hard here, so is there an adjustment somewhere (we have no paperwork or instructions) as our water usage must be similar?

We are in a very hard water area - Suffolk. There are 2 of us in the house (retired) and 2 blocks usually lasts 3 - 4 weeks depending on water consumption. You should replace the block when the red line on the back of the reservoir becomes visible. One block may dissolve faster than the other - but as they share the brine reservoir it does not matter. It is difficult to compare salt usage with your previous model as it used a different technology. If anything your new one should use less as it only recycles when needed. The amount of water that passes through the unit before it re-cylces is set at installation. It should be calibrated so that when the resin in one tank is “full” it switches to the other and recycles the first one. It is the frequency of the recycling that determines salt usage. I.e. in a hard water area, less water passes through the unit before a re-cycling as there is more hardness to remove. In a softer area, more water goes though before this is necessary, thus re-cycling and salt usage will be less frequent. However, the same about of salt is used at each re-cylcling regardless of the hardness in your area - it just happens less frequently in a soft water area. You cannot adjust it yourself. If you doubt the accuracy of the calibration, get the installer back.

We live in Essex so water is hard we are a family of 3 our system uses 2 blocks at a time and we replace them once a month our water consumption is quite high 3 power showers a day plus at least 2 wash loads per day . plus the dishwasher going twice a day so we think once month is quite economical hope this helps

The cradle which holds the salt blocks is removable. It can be heavy if 2 large blocks of salt are in it. Remove the salt blocks from the cradle. Lift the lid to the unit and the salt cradle can be removed completely and washed and rinsed in clean non soapy water if necessary. If there is any salt residue on the wall of the salt “tank” area, I use a plastic scraper of the type designed to defrost fridges etc. This will prevent damage to the unit. The salt scrapings can be left to drop into the saline solution at the bottom where they will be dissolved and used for the next re-cycle. Put the cradle back and secure the back edge under the front of the lid. Replace salt blocks. Job done. Be careful to ensure that NO contaminants of any kind are introduced to the saline area - this might impair the ability of the resin in the softener to work. Use clean hands or wear latex gloves to ensure that you do not introduce a contaminant or infection into the unit. Treat it as though it is a food preparation area. NB After many years of use - I have never found it necessary to do this. Salty walls will not impair the operation unless they prevent the blocks dropping to the bottom of the saline unit.

I didn't realise at first why the Salt blocks were sticking in position until I felt the sides of the salt chamber. I tend to clear the salt by hand every time a replacement is needed and that seems to work well. It's a bit of a manual process but it's better knowing the salt block function correctly.

OK. When is it doing that? When water is passing through or during the “re-cycle” process? First off, try to determine if this is something straightforward. Try removing the salt cover / salt basket when it is buzzing. remove the rear top cover. Try moving / holding different bits of the unit. It might just be a vibration causing something to rattle / buzz. Move it slightly. If anything simple is causing a mechanical buzz - you might find you can stop it. If it doesn’t, it might be the “propellers” in the metering device that are either catching or worn. If that is the case you will need to get professionals in. Depending on the age of the machine and the suppliers it might still be under guarantee. I think ours was for 5 years - but I’m not absolutely certain.

Our previous model was not the TT2. However it did fail after 5 years. The TT3 is an improvement in many ways, but the point of having the softener is to remove hardness from the water. We knew our old unit was due for replacement as it stopped doing this. Buy a water softness testing kit - they are about £10.00 from Amazon. If it is still working - stick with it. It’s worth noting that over a period of time the resin will deteriorate and not be as efficient. However, a quality installer will be able to remedy this by changing the cogs in the meter so that it re-cycles more frequently. Downside to this is that you will use more salt. Salt is cheaper than new kit!

You are using one block per tank so it you leave one empty the resin balls in that tank will just get scaled up. I believe the idea of the twin tanks is that you get continuous soft water even when the resin beads are being cleaned through in one tank it uses the other tank to provide you with uninterrupted softened water.
Report this content widd1 Written on: 17/08/2015
In simple terms - YES. The previous answer is partly correct. There are two resin tanks that do the softening. They do this alternatively. When one resin tank has softened enough water and can soften no more the device switches to the other resin tank. The device knows how much can be softened as there is a metering device to measure the volume of the water that has passed through the tank. Once “full” the first resin tank is then “re-generated” by soaking the resin in a brine solution whilst the second tank takes over the softening process. After soaking in brine, it is rinsed and then sits on standby until the second tank is “full” when it will switch back to the first tank. The re-generation process uses a saturated salt solution which is where the salt blocks come in. If there is only 1 salt block, it does not matter - it will still take the same amount of salt from that 1 block as it would from 2 blocks to make the brine solution up to the required strength. There is no saving to be made by running the device on one salt block. They both sit in the same reservoir and use the same volume of water and salt regardless of the number of salt blocks in the reservoir. Ergo, one block will get used up twice as quickly as two blocks. My mind wonders why you would even consider just 1 block as they are supplied in pairs. This is so that you don’t have to do the re-fill job as frequently.

Hi Thank you for answering my question folks. The reason I asked this question widd1, was NOT because I only use 1 block at a time but to see if waiting until block 2, which ALWAYS diminishes at a slower rate and does not always need replacing at the same time. I want to wait till BOTH blocks have, as good as finished ,before replacing both blocks instead of only Replacing one at a time, that's all.

Fact: Our TwinTec water softener is in the utility room. There is also a sink in there, supplied with softened water. Fact: Occasionally over the last two years the water at that sink tastes very salty. So we have stopped using it for the dog. Fact: Earlier this year we had a leak under the floor where the pipe ran from the softener area to the sink. The pipe was perforated with lots of tiny holes. It was not cheap to have this dealt with. Fact: Also earlier this year we had the TwinTec given an overhaul and most of the operating parts and chemicals replaced. This was not cheap either. Question: Might the brine outlet pipe of the TwinTec have got blocked and caused brine flow into the pipe to the sink which then corroded that pipe to cause it to leak? If so, what should we do about this? How can we tell in the future if it gets blocked again?

To answer the question directly; yes the TwinTec Water Softener is safe for people with sensitive skin. Before having the Softener installed I had bad eczema that itched like mad. This condition has vastly improved since having the Water Softener. You should see an improvement within a couple of months. Enjoy.
