“Overpriced, no guarentees, and useless "corrective"...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CraigD on 03/08/2012

First off, the course content is lacking and very simplified. Actual theory tuition (which contained the odd nugget of useful info) lasted a mere hour or so a day, the rest so called theory classes involved doing mock exams on a cheap easily accessible driving tuition software suite on the computer - Could of done that at home, and did which I think had more to do with my pass than the course. Practical consists of 4 hours driving a day, 4 x 5 = 20 hours tuition. That is a steep price for 20 driving lessons. I must say my instructor (I think - independently contracted instructor) was very good. I cannot fault him, polite, friendly, patient, explains things simply and tried to put you at ease. But I would imagine most good instructors do. Generally it would seem most average people are able to finish off their practical by driving to the theory test center, but this is by no means forced if you do not feel ready. And this leads me on being "ready" this company makes clear in no certain terms if your driving is not up to standard by the end of the week (you are scored out of 5 daily for various in car activities), they will not provide you with further tuition. This will come at extra expense via a private deal with your instructor if you wish. 5Days claims of unlimited corrective classes and tuition falls into 2 types. Fail your theory and your corrective classes consist of sitting in the room using the previously mentioned software OVER and OVER. The practical corrective tuition involves your tuition being taken over by the course manager, in a different car, only during office hours, and to a point where he only has to correct or approve the reasons for failing on your driving test report. Really pointless for most people in my opinion. Again I had to privately pay my instructor so I didn't change car, and could have more sociable time options. 5Day also offer a "Fast Track" service for booking your test. This involves them checking with your test center for cancellations and moving your date for you, to ANY date available regardless of what you want. If you fail your test this "service" then costs you £50 each subsequent time. TOPTIP - You can do this yourself quite easily by logging onto the DSA website each day before office hours (before companies like 5day start work and eat up all of the cancellations) ie 6-8am (they are open from 6am) and there will generally be some cancellations available. Just saved you £50 :) I would also like to reiterate something reviewed lower down - Celebrities. I was very fortunate enough to have a Z list mega star on my course, no name dropping of course, but what this effectively means is for the entire week the training manager will spend most of his time ensuring "they" are OK and comfortable, while barely paying much effort or attention to the rest of the group. I would of even appreciated him at least trying to hide this! The round up of what you are paying for... 1. 6 hours of basic theory, 10 hours of sitting at a computer 2. 20 hours of practical 3. Your theory test booked for you (you have to pay separately for it though when booking) 4. A cancellation finder for your practical (read my top tip) 5. A theory guide book with a few round ups of the theory lessons. 6. Use of a computer and software 7. unlimited pointless theory correction classes 8. Restrictive and in my opinion practically useless practical unlimited" tuition 9. One hour brief at the beginning of each day 9-10 Course - in class by a qualified adi for around £800 this is ridiculously overpriced. Bottom line..... Would I recommend - Hell NO Would I use again - Hell NO Did I enjoy my overall experience with 5Day - Hell NO and incidentally I am sure you will have guessed I failed my first practical - my fault not 5Days obviously. At this point I avoided 5Day because of the extra costs and pointless correction options. I passed my second time

Thank you for your comments. May I address your comment: "The practical corrective tuition involves your tuition being taken over by the course manager, in a different car, only during office hours, and to a point where he only has to correct or approve the reasons for failing on your driving test report. Really pointless for most people in my opinion" This is the corrective course recommended by the Government and the reason why you are given the DL25 failure report by the examiner at the end of your test. I am sorry that you feel that you did not benefit at all with our course as we work very hard to help people pass the test in the shortest possible time. Obviously this service does cost money but compared with normal lessons and a test on the waiting list we believe that the course does offer value for money. Considering that you attended the course on Monday 21st May coming to us as a complete beginner, and took and passed the theory test on the course later that week, and got to a standard where you applied for and took your driving test 5 Days after you applied for it, I consider that we have done a good job!. If you would like to contact Head Office and discuss your experiences I would be happy to arrange a full refund of your course fee if it is shown that you did not benefit at all with any of the course theory or practical tuition that you had on the course. 5DAY DIRECTORS.

I was slightly nervous of going on the course at first in Manchester but when i arrived I was made to feel welcome and at ease , The training Manager was polite and curtious to everyone , we had briefs in the morning and then went driving for the day then we did theory which was a problem for me as i didnt know anything , but the training manager really helped averyone to pass, i think out of 12 people only one failed his theory !, My instructor was a woman and we got on great , she was patient with me even when i did some dangerous things. I passed my theory , and was asked if i wanted to apply for my test , although i got myself up to a good level and felt safe enough to do the test , i wanted to make sure, so when the course finished , I asked the instructor for a couple of lessons which we did privatly , i think i had 3 all together, I then fast tracked my test and passed first time , so thanks to 5day I did in a couple of weeks what may have taken me months to achieve.

Brilliant week, really didn't know what to expect but was really impressed, in fact by the time I finished on Friday afternoon I felt sorry to be leaving the others on the course that I'd met that week. Everyone at 5 day was great and very friendly. I had plenty of help with the theory, which I was very worried about and so much that was covered in the classroom came up in my test. I did fail my practical test first time, but I then had a couple of free remedial lessons, which were free and then passed second time. Well chuffed.

We treat all our customers the same. I am sure that if you had any problems on the course you would have mentioned this to the course manager on the course week as soon as you had issues. In this event we do have spare instructors and would bring them in if you were not happy with the one you had.

Great course or theory training and a quick driving test. Was taught all i needed to pass both the tests. Was a bit lazy with theory revision at home but when you are at 5day with everyone else you get good theory training and get motivated for the theory which is on the course. Got my driving test quick too just like they say and obviously passed it 1st time :)

I had already done my theory the year before but never got round to taking any more lessons. So i contacted 5day and asked them if they did non-theory courses as well as the normal courses they do which include theory and i was delighted when they said they did. I started my course last monday (6th feb 2012) and passed my test on the friday (10th feb 2012) excellent instructor and other people in my group said the same about their instructors and its just an excellent course that 5day provide. I don't think there's any better way to learn to drive, why drag it out over 6 months? save up the money and get it done in 5 days!

Before using 5day, I had failed my test three times. It's so demoralising to fail your driving test - and piles on the pressure, especially when you have other commitments such as studying. The thought that I had to get my driving test done and dusted was always at the back of my mind. I discovered 5day simply through researching intensive driving companies in Norwich on the internet. Previously, I had used another company and had done a couple of hours a week. The driving instructor I did this with was good - but I would definitely recommend intensive courses from my own experience, where I found it more suited to me than only doing a couple of hours a week over an extended period of time. 5day is centrally located and I found the office staff helpful and understanding. You complete classroom-based learning for around 45 minutes before you venture out into the practical driving session (I already had the theory test certificate before using 5day, this classroom-based learning is supplementary to the practical course and has nothing to do with the theory test course). Some people might be apprehensive about this, but I found it extremely helpful and it is something few driving schools offer. The instructor was knowledgeable and it enables you to get to grips with the Highway Code and how to respond to situations when driving. One rather unique thing I liked about 5day is that they give you a questionnaire where you can specify the type of style/attitude you want your driving instructor to display (from pushing you to your limit to being more laid back). This is great as it allows you to decide how you want to be taught, as the instructors are given this questionnaire. My instructor was great - he built my confidence and helped me to improve where I had been faltering. The only caveat I would offer is that you should probably have some basic driving experience before using 5day, as opposed to someone who has never been behind a steering wheel. You don't need to be anywhere near a pro, but it just helps when you are thrust into the busy roads of Norwich. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend 5day. Having to pay for the entire course (as opposed to say smaller amounts for individual lessons) can be a bit daunting, but the fact that they offer free, unlimited lessons if you fail sealed it for me and in my view makes 5day good value for money. Even though I passed soon after completing the course, to have the free lessons to fall back on if I failed was certainly a reassurance and took some pressure off.

It sure is quick, hard work but fast. Passed theory on the course and they got my driving test the next Monday. Passed both first time with high marks and now driving about norfolk so watch out lol. I had had a few lesson form another school but they were dragging it out so i went to 5day. its a good price to pay considering i saved so much time

I think it depends on the course you book, the one I took was the £900 full week with practical and theory and if I failed I would have received free correctional lessons. I would recommend them to anyone though, the service I received was superb, and I passed first time. Good luck !

Yes but as soon as you book your next test they won’t give you lessons anymore and that’s when you need the lessons the most leading upto the test

I'm a 17 year old fast learner and I'm very eager to learn more and pass my test. I have had a couple of driving lessons with a local instructor and I've insured my car provisionally. I've had a few hours experience and feel quite confident on the local roads and main roads. I took my theory test and failed hazard perception (I passed the questions). I would like to fast track the whole process and get my license in the next month. What attracts me about 5 day is that there doesn't seem to be any messing about (booking tests and lessons, then waiting for them) it looks as though you blast out the whole process in 5days...... although I have seen some bad reviews. I'm in two minds wether to book the course or not and would really appreciate an opinion on my situation and if the course would suit my needs. I have thought about going with another company and doing block lessons however I would have to book my theory test separately, and wait a month to do it. I would then have to book my practical and wait a couple of months for that. Please let me know what you think!! Many thanks

Hi, my son passed his theory in the 5 days as they go driving in the morning then work on the theory in the afternoon doing lots of practice for this. If they feel you are ready for driving test after 5 days you will be booked in the following week which is great if you pass but costs just under £1000. If you don't pass is where the problems start as they will give you further lessons free until you book another test date then you are on your own so will need to find another instructor to give you lessons up until that next test date, which then is even more expense. Can you check for cancellations for theory test like you can do for test date? My son has now passed we got a cancellation date 10 days after 2nd test, but if we did it again I wouldn't go with 5 day as i feel it is a lot of money esp if you don't pass first time. My son wanted to pass quickly as he needed a car for work but it still took a few months in the end not 5 days! My other friends have found it cheaper booking 2 hour lessons with instructors for a few weeks then putting in for test checking every day for cancellations and passed around the same time as the other man mentioned. Hope this helps and good luck

Please what ever you do save your money an don't go with 5day, go with someone with good reviews 'castle' are a driving school based in Colchester my family have been taught by them and they really are fantastic, they also do crash courses which I done and passed, but if that's not an option for you then thoroughly research another good instructor that can also do crash courses, my advice is definatekybstay away from 5 say they are not worth the money, rude and unhelpful people

If you are a total beginner what is the chances of passing first time? This is an expensive course, I don't want to waste my money. Also do they book your theory test and practical test with the local place? I don't want to have to go to another city to do my practical and theory test.

I honestly wouldnt waste your money with 5 day...there are far better instructors out there...we have spent over a £1000 with them on additional lessons before my sons test...plus if you fail they purposely forget to tell u that the cost of another test is around £130... thats £62 for test. An £50 to hire there car an another £25 for them to fast track u a test date...my son is now learning with bensons who have been great an assured him they will get him through his test...please dont waste your money with 5 day they dont give a damn u fail or pass its just money to them

Our daughter turned 17 on the 4th January 2016 and passed her driving test with 5 day on the 4th February 2016. As parents we took her out on the road as much as possible before going to 5 day in the 2 weeks after her birthday. When she arrived at 5 day she had basic knowledge, was able to use relatively good clutch control and fairly good road sense. She had not practised any theory other than ourselves testing her as much as possible when out and about on the road. She attended the Bristol Centre, she was not familiar with these roads as we live 40 miles away. The 5 day centre booked her theory test which she passed first time and her practical test was also taken in Bristol. I have 3 daughters, with her being the eldest and I can honestly say I will without hesitation be booking my other 2 daughters into 5 day without hesitation when they turn 17. I have nothing but praise for her instructor and the intense classroom theory lessons. She is an excellent driver with very good road sense and I feel very confident driving with her. I think whether driving with 5 day or taking hourly lessons you need to be putting in some work/practice on the roads yourself wherever possible in between or leading up to taking the lessons. I hope this helps and good luck.

Impossible; the last day of your course is theory test in the morning, followed by another 4 hours of driving with your instructor. After this, your course is complete, and they can book you in a practical very soon after the end. In my case, I said "yeah sure let's do it" on the Friday, and my practical test was on the following Wednesday. While I was there, people were discussing how long they'd been waiting, and it was on the order of 6 weeks.
