“I have recently renewed my breakdown cover with Start...”

★★★★★

written by Soulman1 on 05/01/2011

I have recently renewed my breakdown cover with Start Rescue for the second year running and what a fantastic deal I managed to get. The premium for the level of cover I selected was already superb value at £35 (nearly half that which the AA & RAC etc, charge for comparative cover) but I also had a 20% discount code which gave me a superb deal of £28!

In terms of my dealing with Start Rescue I needed to use the service once last year (flat battery). When I called Start Rescue I found the customer service staff polite and courteous and they helped put my mind at ease. The breakdown recovery man was with me within 20 minutes of my call and got my car going so I could make it home.

I have read some of the other reviews on this site and some of them seem very harsh to me. A breakdown recovery policy is to get your car going if you breakdown and/or help you recover your vehicle to somewhere suitable if you can't get it going, not necessarily to put you up in a hotel for a mini holiday whilst your car is fixed!.

I can only talk from experience and I have been extremely impressed with the level of service I have received and that, added to the fantastic deal that I had with the premium means that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Start Rescue to my friends and family.

Start rescue reached my house in an hour yesterday but to be fair, it took a few attempts to get up my hill through the snow. My car just needed a jump start in the end and the man was quite jolly. Overall, a good service used for the first time, especially as it was snowing.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!!This is an absolutely appalling break down service. I have never been with a breakdown service so bad. If i could give a 0 for customer service i would. I called them out after my car wouldnt start whilst stuck in thick snow and freezing weather. The guy came out and tried to turn the ignition...when it didnt start (as i had explained on the phone) he said yeah wont start you ve flooded engine now and i dont have the equipment to deal with it so do you want a tow to a garage. Shocked that i was going to be towed to a garage when he hadnt even attempted to fix it, i suggested that the engine may have dried out if i waited a few hours. The guy agreed and suggested i call start rescue again in few hours. I did this only to be told that start rescue would not come back out as this was a second call out to the same problem. I explained what the guy had said and they advised that i should not have listened to him and phoned them to check (when it had taken me 20 mins on hold to actually speak to someone the first time). I explained that i was a young girl on my own in the middle of know where in the snow and now dark so why would i have done this if he hadnt said it. They said it didnt matter the only way they would come back out is if i paid £90. The problem with this company is that they contact local garages to come out to you. The garages dont give a hoot when they get to you as they have already been paid, so there is no incentive to fix the vehicle, however there is an incentive to get you to a garage where they can charge you for work. When this happened i had just renewed for another year the day before, thus given the service i wanted to cancel the policy. I was told that this was fine but i would receive no refund! WHAT EVER YOU DO, STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!!

I found this review very helpful because...its right these type of recovery only recover you not fix you. these are ok for if you have a good car so in case you need them otherwise go for autoservice like aa or RAC

Accept the tow,who in their right mind as a young girl waits in the middle of nowhere in the freezing weather for hours on the off chance the engine might dry out.modern engines don't flood by the way and its easy to start even if its an older flooded one.
this review makes no sense does the reviewer work for the RAC by any chance?

I bought cover through start rescue over the phone, spoke to a very nice lady who got me cheaper cover than what I had before and she explained how their service works. Three weeks later my car would not start in the morning, the service was as they explained and they recovered it to my local garage for further work. Brilliant service would advise you use start rescue.

Brilliant! The front section of my exhaust sheared so the car was un-drivable. I didn't have breakdown cover, therefore joined startrescue.co.uk , waited the 24 hours before you can make a claim and had my car towed to the garage of my choice.

3 star cover for £20 (type "startrescue voucher" into google for a 20% discount code!)

Guy on the phone was perfectly helpful

Recovery truck turned up 30 mins after phonecall, agreed my car couldn't be fixed at the roadside and trailered me to the garage of my choice.

Would recommend to anyone!

“I took out Breakdown cover with Start Rescue as it...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 06/09/2010

I took out Breakdown cover with Start Rescue as it seemed very good value for money, unfortunately it seems you get what you pay for. I recently had to call out the service as my car had been making funny noises and I could not get it to start properly, the 'mechanic' that came out to me said he thought it was something to do with the fuel pump and told me I should drive it my self to a garage.

When I got the vehicle to a garage the mechanic there said the fuel pump was realty badly blocked and that I should not have driven the car at all.

I then called them back when I got home as I had purchased a policy that included 'alternative' transport - on their website it says ' if the recovery agent is unable to repair the vehicle we will pay up to £100 towards the cost of alternative transport or car hire' but when I called to tell them I required to use this service they told me I couldn't use it as I had broken down within 20 miles of my home. There was no mention of this when I purchased the policy and when I read through my policy documents it was worded very very shadily.

I feel Start rescue have really messed me around, not only did they make me drive my own car to the garage when it wasn't drivable they used some hidden terms and conditions so I couldn't get another car.

AWFUL SERVICE DO NOT USE!

Had a breakdown yesterday and called upon "Start" to rescue me. They did an excellent job , help arrived in less than 30 min. and as my car could not be repaired at the side of the road it was transported to a garage in my home town. Fantastic service and all this for a premium of £26.oo p.a.
I would have no hesitation in recomending START.

Their contact came out in a transit and tried to start my car. Told me it was a problem with fuel pump and would have to be seen by a garage and then left. Called day after to get recovery to a garage and told that it should of been done last night and that I WAS informed about this by the mechanic. They will not budge and I am left having to find alternative recovery and totally dumfounded. I cannot recommend this service. They should vet their sub contractors more efficiently. No doubt they have good contractors, but be prepared to drop on the one I had. Customer service ability to deal with my trauma was extremely poor. I logged a complaint with moneysupermarket where I purchased the cover. I had level 3 cover

I've called them out twice - flat battery issues due to lockdown on two different cars - and there has been no charge. Out of interest, I've stayed with them for two years because, unlike some 'New Customers Only' deals, they haven't increased their premiums each year. The website membership price shown is the same for everyone, new or old. Quite refreshing!

All roadside rescue services will attempt repairs to get you going. As for tyre changes, again, at my age, all roadside services I've used have been happy to provide this service. I can't fault Start Rescue. on the few occasions I've needed them, they've arrived promptly and got me moving again. They've adopted a 'no increase' policy for existing customers so it's unlikely that I'll leave them now for a 'new customers only' cheaper deal elsewhere.

It is genuine cover but unlike the AA or RAC: They will only recover your vehicle local to wherever the car is. If your preferred garage is closed, they can take your car home but won't take your car to the garage at another time to the garage like AA/RAC They use third party recovery companies. Their attempt at fixing the car will not be as go5id as RAC/AA

For about five years I never needed to test Start then, last year, I suffered battery failure and was forced to call them out. My call was answered quickly and, despite it being 9pm, a breakdown technician got to me in under the hour. The control centre gave me regular updates on his arrival time. He apologised for the fact that it should have been half that time, but my local tech was already committed and they brought him in from a neighbouring patch. No doubt you will also find horror stories, but I can only tell you how good I found them.

My recommendation would be to contact Start Rescue directly to ensure you have the facts. In my humble opinion it would be dangerous to visit the Isle of Man on the opinion of someone other than from the company - no matter how well intentioned. I have found Start Rescue to be an excellent service but - as your question rightly asks - you do need to have the right cover. Hope this helps.

My understanding is that they take you to wherever you requested when making the call for the rescue - if that is home, then that is the end of it. So for my recent rescue I asked for a drop off to my local garage rather than home.

No they won't. This let's down their service significantly as it's not always practical to take your car to the garage straight away.

Not really sure what you are asking..... If you're asking are Start Rescue good, yes they are. I've been with them for several years and unless they go bust, I'll not use anyone else and I have used most of the others in the past (AA, RAC, Green Flag etc). Start Rescue have always met my needs, including one very rainy Friday night, collecting me, the wife and son, plus a dead Renault Laguna from the services on the M6, taking us back to their depot, diagnosing that it was the alternator and couldn't be fixed til the morning, arranging a hire car, helping to transfer the car full of luggage (including the wifes wheelchair into the hire car) and seeing us safely on our way. The Laguna was delivered home around 4pm Monday, the hire car wasn't collected until the Wednesday, no need to panic and rush to get it ready to collect. I don't think you'll find a better service for the price anywhere..... If you're after a forum where other disabled drivers discuss their problems, I can't help, I'm not a member of any, nor have I looked for any, sorry.

They use local garages so don't have to have a fleet of breakdown vehicles of there own and the staff to pay. Start Rescue is part of a bigger national company. I've had to use them a couple of times and can't fault there service. Would never go to AA or RAC again, there prices are just rip off by comparison.

Because they only recover local to where car is -. So if you are a significant distance away from home then tough luck Also won't take you home (if local) first and then to garage the next day for example - just the one tow per incident. Third party recovery agents so the attempted fix won't be good as the the more well known providers who are more geared up to fix your car and are more like mobile mechanics
