EA is the better car, ask any one who's owned one. the Vn was built with a poorly designed V6 motor, with stuff all torque. The rating is for the EA too (8), VN gets a (6.5). The Person with the comment, "I wish i had the reliability of the ford in their Holden Vn is Absolutely right. Vn's were no more reliable than a EA falcon, its just the owners of VN's like to think so, I know, at least the Ea doesn't leak oil out of a fuckin stupid rope seal at the back of the engine, too.

its not always practical if you lower it too much, but it handles really good. i got a Holden VN Vacationer wagon 12/90 the auto has always slipped a bit since we've had it (also heavy on fuel and drains power) i just put a series1 stage 2 shift kitted (built for towing) auto box in it. (different ratio box) now its better on fuel, got its full power back its a lot quicker now. and im about to put 3.36 diff ratio in it(currently 3.08). i know family rig old habits die hard. : ) my also idles a bit rough and has little pops or backfires out the tail pipe. ?its all serviced regularly pen rite oils magnetic filters etc...

Performance and reliability, but genearally boring interior, don't drive as well as an EA Falcon. Can be dangerous at high speed cornering due to light weight. Typical early V6 harshness, not nearly as smooth as the same model ford inline 6.

I had simmular problems and also had to run a bottle of injector cleaner through my tank. I also notised that a bottle of enginestopleak helped to max conpression in motor allowing me to notice a very small leak/air inlet around one of the the fuel hoses that join the fuel lines/pipes make sure to check them now my mighty VN has max speed/take of again.
I also did most of the other general checks.

I have owned my vn for 6 months (it's my 1st car) and i am extremely happy with it, performance is great for a stock v6 and it is roomy enough 2 do anything. I recommend the VN to anyone who is looking for a reliable/performance/family car at a now small cost.

written by peacemaker. on 14/01/2003

I have nothing against holden i've driven the vn it's a good car, actually it's really nice, but the EA falcon will rule over the vn no problem. People are too scared to drive them cause they are afraid it might be better and if they do they drive an auto, that's the problem the auto is a very poor make, once you ride the 5 speed manual, it's a whole new car over again, with that bit more oomfff than the v6 competitor. Really the only downfall is its weight, the vn is very light. But the Ea vs VN drag, will prove the EA better! its been done.

yes it has been done befor.
<br> But if you look in the september 1988 wheels magazine you will clearly see that the Vn commodore was way ahead of the EA falcon.
<br>There is even pictures in there to show the big distance between the 2 cars.

"Really the only downfall is its weight, the vn is very light."
<br>
<br>What?! There's no such thing as a car that's too light. A lighter car will handle better, will stop quicker, accelerate faster, and use less fuel.
<br>
<br>The VN was definitely one of the better Commodores, if you're into that sort of thing. And it killed the EA in almost every respect.

An Ea falcon can not beat the Vn! My wife drives An EA Falcon 5 speed and when I bought the VN wagon 5 speed we decided lets see whats quicker? The EA having a limited slip diff was the better starter (the road being damp after a shower) and the VN only driving of the one wheel you had to baby it off the line, but boy did it gain over the last 100 metres!!! My wife and I swaped cars and she beat me, and I was redlineing the the falcons rings off! this was done over the usual 400m.

written by mikehop4. on 02/01/2003

Our Holden VN Commodore Stationwagon was running rough tried all kinds of things. Finally, when replacing the fuel pump, found the fuel tank had a heap of red dust sand in it.
Also, after cleaning the engine, resulted in the car computer having to be reset - it kept breaking down for no reason at the time repeatedly.

“I have a Commodore 1990 VN Stationwagon. ”

★★★★★

written by John Boy. on 07/09/2002

I have a Commodore 1990 VN Stationwagon.

I have found my car has a bit of a rough idle, I gave it a tune up, plugs and leads, and still found it was running a bit rough. Cleaned the throttle body assembly, checked the base idle and the speed sensor control, all to no avail.

Took it to an auto electrican for aa fault code check, and revealed the knock sensor swich missing. I thought that was the problem. Still no joy. Injectors were cleaned by the previous owner. Threw a couple of bottles of Injector Cleaner, in the tank, seemed to be better after that. The car drives fine, it's only at idle it runs a little rough, although I may be being too picky - the car is nearly 13 years old.
Someone suggested the oxgen senser yet to check that.

The Holden VN Commodore Stationwagon is a fantastic car that goes very well and can be pushed hard. The TH700 transmission is bulletproof and the engine is very torquey with lots of low down grunt. They have a nice large interior, big enough for the biggest size of people. They have a good bang for your bucks factor.

“Because the 1990 Holden VN Commodore Station wagon was...”

★★★★☆

written by Ben. on 29/04/2002

Because the 1990 Holden VN Commodore Station wagon was the first of the new style of commodores, the vn did have many teething problems, most of which have been resurrected in later model commodores.
Personally, i have a 91 model sedan which was bought new and an 88 model stationwagon which i bought second hand in 2001 and it had 128000kms on the odometer. The 91 model has given me no problems. But the 88 model stationwagon has cost me around $3000 in repairs including a new head gasket.
I have only added 15000kms to the clock.

David Marshall's Response to 21578_Ben.'s Review

Written on: 18/02/2004

I've previously owned a VN Commodore. The V6 engine is a Buick engine which was designed in the USA for front wheel drive. Hence when it was adapted to rear wheel drive in Australia it was pretty noisy and idled roughly. However it went like hell , developed almost all of its maximum torque barely off idle (about 1200rpm), which meant putting your foot down almost resulted in instant decapitation . With your head travelling towards the back seat. Steering a bit vague and upholstery was generally a dull grey colour. However, the performance made up for it. If you can put up with some clunking in the drive shaft and the occasional glitch with the engine management system(early models 1988-1989). An excellent first car that is cheap to buy, economical and performs like a sports car.

You've done the vn a brillant justice ben they are very tough and reliable cars with great acceleration and fuel economy they were better than boxy vls and the other bombs of there times now days there old but not in bad condition vt will get naff in a few years and people will say they were a great car in there time it happens to all cars but still the vn kicks ass and will be a legend in time for performance, fuel economy, realiability and bang for bucks

written by rosco. on 03/04/2002

I've owned a 5spd Holden VN Commodore stationwagon for 6 months or so now and they're fantastic cars except not long after purchasing the car it developed a miss fire that cost over $1000 to remedy (coil pack and DFI Modual as well as the crank angle sensor). From what i've read it's a common problem (when mine was being repaired there was another in with the same problem). As far as its performance, they give as good as they get.
The VN has been Quoted at 121 kw at 1300 odd kilos and the VT at 154kw at 1600 odd kilos. My VN in stock trim Dragged my mates stock VT over the 1/4 an had it at every chance.

Dude, regarding ur crank angle sensor, that only really goes if u leave the miss fire for too long.... i have it miss firing on me several times, due to the fact that i never got it serviced because i was broke... i only ever had the coil go once, and that was because the chip below the coil burnt out.... usually a missfire is caused by the dodgy spark plugs or the leads... that is my experience anyway.... for the rest, the vn is a bloody good car, except for the door seals which really hack my off....

★★★★★

written by Jim. on 25/02/2002

My car is a Holden 1990 VN Commodore Wagon 5 speed and has done over 300,000Km's and still has proved to be a very reliable unit. It provides me with a level of performance that I need to get out of tight situations. Athought the ride tends to be a bit harsh at times, I find it enjoyable to drive. When pushed too hard through corners tho it can get a bit hairy if you dont keep on top of it as it tends to go from predictable to major oversteer if you are not ready for it. If you have a manual take care not to apply too much power at takeoff as you will tend to wheelspin especailly in the wet. If you like a car that is a real drivers car, not one that you just steer and press a few pedals then this car is a must for you. if you want a car that is smooth bypass this one and buy an EA Falcon.
The VN even in base form can look very smart, colour code the bumpers, chuck on a set of mags and they look very good.

My wife has an EA Wagon 5speed, she likes it, I still prefer the VN Wagon.

FE2 suspension is a must, handling is improved dramatically.
Powerchip gives the Commodore power throughout revrange, not only down low where the non-chipped find their power.
Big enough for the long hauls yet small enough for city and suburbia.
Owned my Commodore for 5 months now, done 22,000kms and not one problem.
It has done 245,000kms now.
A Joy to drive and Own
