“Poor Service and Effort”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/05/2014

I didn't get the best service when I had trouble with the hotel Contours have booked. They didn't do their best in helping me to find an alternative - all they cared about was accepting my money and that was it! I spoke to a lady and she was just plain rude! Wasn't helpful at all, especially being a customer service advisor for Contour! Above all, I will not recommend this company to anyone.

“Lots of Fun!”

written by on 04/10/2013

We did an 8 day hike on the Southwest Coast Path in Devon and Cornwall England. Contour Walking Holidays booked all our nightly accommodation, all the information about the hike and arranged for our luggage transport. All we had to do was hike! These hikes are self-guided, which we really liked. We could set our own pace. The places Contour booked for us were excellent, e.g. a nicely appointed room in an 11th century inn, B&B in Tintagel with all organic food and amazing choices for breakfast, as well as a view of the sea and 'Camelot'. We really app0reciated these places because the weather was variable. sometime we arrived wet and muddy. At Port Isaac (the Doc Martin town) our B&B host offered and then washed our muddy rain pants for us! When the hike ended and we went to a regular hotel, we missed the personal touch we had received on the hike. Contour provided maps, a hiking book and descriptions of the hike. All the information about the hike was very clear (and the trail was very well marked too. However, some of the write-ups on how to find the B&Bs were obviously written by locals and not as helpful as they could be. For example, the direction to take the "road out of town" (when there are a number of roads one could take) is probably crystal clear to a local but not so to someone from another country! We will definitely book our next hiking adventure in the UK through Contour.

“Fantastic!”

★★★★★

written by on 02/10/2013

Our first night, before our walk, we stayed in a converted barn in Humshaugh, a very comfortable start to our walk. The weather was perfect! Everything about the holiday was fantastic. The overnight stays, the self-guide maps, the organised luggage drops, the signs along the Wall path. Friends had told me that there wasn't much of the Wall left but I'm very pleased to say that they were wrong, at least on the route that we took, Hexham to Lanecost. And there is so much else to see of the Roman remains let alone the breathtaking scenery. Awesome! We met some charming people from other countries and exchanged experiences. Hexham to Lanecost is, apparently, the most scenic and possibly the hardest but I'd do it again without a doubt, However, to do the whole walk is a must, then I can get the t-shirt!

“Take care with the booking conditions”

★★☆☆☆

written by mort0002 on 01/09/2013

Contours no doubt market good walking holidays, but prospective clients should fully understand the implications of their Terms and Conditions. Contours will not supply any details whatsoever of your booking until AFTER you have paid both a deposit and the full sum due, which I my case was to be around 1700 pounds. They refuse to tell you where or what the nightly accommodation is, what facilities it has, how far off the track it is, whether wifi is available or anything else at all. Even after paying, you get this basic information only 4 weeks before the trip. When I queried this, Contours confirmed bluntly after several exchanges that “you will not see any documents before payment has been received”. After reading other reviewers’ experiences of Contours, I decided this just wasn’t acceptable especially as I was to be a solo walker, and chose to forfeit my 90 pounds deposit. An expensive lesson.

Contourswalkingholidays's Response to mort0002's Review

Written on: 04/09/2013

Dear mort0002,

We are sorry that you have been disappointed by our service.

As I am sure you will appreciate, the price that we charge covers the cost of booking your holiday, arranging your luggage transfers and providing maps and guidebooks etc. While your deposit secures your booking and allows us to proceed with arranging your holiday, we cannot confirm these bookings or pay for the rooms until we are sure that you will be going on your holiday. This is the service that you are paying for. As with the majority of services, if we have not received full payment, we cannot provide the full product.

We are sorry that you feel disappointed by our Terms and Conditions. We pride ourselves on being clear about our booking conditions and all customers must agree to these before booking their holiday. We state very clearly, both in our booking conditions and elsewhere on our website that holiday packs are sent four weeks prior to the start of a holiday and at this point, all information is sent, not just the basic information that you imply.
Please see below for a summary of why we do not send holiday packs earlier than the specified four weeks (this summary is taken directly from our website):

“Each holiday pack is produced on an individual basis and is tailored to fit the requirements of your walk. It is put together by our experienced team and sent to you four weeks prior to the start of your walk.

We are often asked if we can send the holiday pack earlier than the specified four weeks. Unfortunately, we do not generate holiday packs earlier than this for the following reasons:

• At Contours Walking Holidays, we are keen for every customer to receive the same standard of service. One customer’s booking does not take priority over another and so we commit to sending each customer’s holiday pack within the same time frame of four weeks prior to the start of your walk.
• We endeavour to book accommodations as soon as possible after receiving your booking. This means that reservations are often made many months in advance. On rare occasions, unforeseen circumstances mean that we have to cancel or change a reservation, which would affect the accuracy of the information in our holiday packs. To prevent this and the confusion that this would cause our customers, we only produce the holiday packs when we have received all last-minute confirmations from the accommodations concerned.”

We must stress that if a potential customer is not happy with our booking conditions, they should not proceed to book a holiday. If in any doubt about our procedures, we are always happy to explain why they are in place.

Yours Sincerely,

Contours Walking Holidays

What a pity you cancelled !!
I too was a solo walker who booked the Western Section of the Coast to Coast Walk with Contours and did the walk in September. I just had to trust Contours with my plans and they more than exceeded my expectations.
I too had no idea where I was booked until my final itinerary arrived - but every night was wonderful!
You are given precise detail on to how to find your accommodation - and every B and B or Hotel had excellent wifi service.
I am already making plans to do the Eastern Section of the Coast to Coast with Contours Walking Holidays - and I am totally sure the accommodation will be first rate - and I'm fussy!!

Clearly you had a good experience, as did others. You must be aware, however, that negative reviews of Contours, on this site and others, have drawn attention to various problems. To give a specific example, people have complained that their accommodation was miles off the track, causing much delay and weariness both at the end of the day and the following morning. I wasn't prepared to stump up my full cost (1700 pounds) without knowing where I would be staying. Similarly, I wanted to know at least something about the facilities, being a single traveller. Would you book a package holiday overseas, and pay in full, without knowing *anything* about what you were getting for your money? If so, you must be much more trusting than I.

“Overall, very satisfied”

written by chimayred on 31/07/2013

We wanted to do nearly 2 weeks of walking tours in england for a honeymoon. We are walkers and usually do up to 20 miles a week. My fiancee' was unbelievably excited about this, and just FYI she is 52 and I am 58. We did a total of 10-11 days split between the Cotswolds and Lake District. The arrangements were exactly as described. I really don't know if the price was good or not; I felt it was fair but didn't break it down per day. It included luggage transfers between hotels, documents, maps, instructions, and a hotel/B & B/guesthouse with breakfast every day. I found them responsive and responsible. We had to call them once and they were right on it - we wanted to skip a walk and ride with our luggage to the next destination. They couldn't have been more accomodating. Every single hotel was highly rated on trip advisor, everyone was clean and accomodating. No complaints there. Intensity of the walks surprised us; we figured these would be rustic and rolling but between the unseasonably hot weather and a couple of very challenging ascents we were really challenged, especially in the Lake District. Make sure you bring a Camelbak with at least 2L of water and refill it often. Make sure you are in shape. Realistically, the only downside was that the walking instructions, which for our tours encompassed up to 14 miles, were usually extremely good but just about each day there were a couple of moments where we found them ambiguous. we''re not talking about the stuff included in their disclaimers - construction, closures, defaced or missing signage...we understand that. At least once or twice a day there was a place where there wasn't an indication whether to go right or left, or a distance was just so far off (5 meters when in reality it was more like 50....). IT was a little scary at first to think we could be off wandering in the Lake District lost, but we treated it as a challenge and between the map and directions were got where we were going every day and never had to backtrack. could they tighten up a few directions here and there? Yes, I suspect, and if I can get the time to send them my notes maybe they can review them....but overall we were really happy with the entire package.

“A Cotswolds Delight!”

★★★★★

written by on 16/07/2013

To celebrate our 25th anniversary, we used Contours to plan a week-long walking holiday for us in the Cotswolds. It went beautifully. This was our first-ever such trip. All arrangements-- B & B's, luggage, maps, etc-- were flawless. We had everything we needed to have a perfect holiday. The accommodations varied in atmosphere but all were just fine- and some were amazing. Some were a bit frumpy, some quite smart, but all were clean and friendly and perfectly adequate. I highly recommend Contours. The walk was well planned, the trail description was very accurate, and the people we dealt with were great. One B & B owner took the liberty of making our dinner reservations in the village's only pub, as she knew it was a busy Saturday night-- who could ask for more considerate service? Could it have been better? That's hard to say. There were certainly higher-end accommodations in some of the villages and towns-- might Contours offer some of these as a treat? Not necessary for us, but might be a thought for Contours.

“Bring rubber gloves and bleach!”

★★★☆☆

written by on 05/04/2013

WE spent five nights in B+Bs whilst walking the Shakespere Way. One was outstanding, two excellent, one good. However The White Bear at Shipstonon Stour is to be avoided at all costs! I would strongly advise anyone thinking of staying there to ask to see a current health and hygeine certificate and more importantly an up to date certifecate of inspection from the Fire Service. We were worried all night especially when lights fused and the bar attendant reported this was a normal occurance. we had to visit the co op to buy bleach and rubber gloves to clean the filthy bathroom before use. Couldnt face breakfast there, went to The George early next morning. Contour tours were not helpful when we phoned to request a change of venue. However every other aspect of their service was very good. I would probably use them again.

Thank you for leaving your review. We’re glad that you found the majority of our accommodation better than average, but offer our sincerest apologies that you were unhappy at the White Bear in Shipston on Stour. We take pride in all of our accommodations and always take complaints very seriously.

I would like to stress that our team did everything we could to assist you upon receiving your initial call of complaint. The company director dealt with your complaint personally, raising your concerns with the proprietors and trying to find you alternative accommodation. Unfortunately, as this incident occurred on Bank Holiday Monday, there was no availability at other accommodations in the area and so, finding no other alternative, you agreed to stay for the night in a different room.

Upon receipt of your complaint, we immediately removed the White Bear from our list of accommodations, pending a visit from ourselves to investigate further. You have also received a refund for this night.

We are sorry that you felt that we were not helpful – we have and continue to do everything we can to resolve the situation and hope that all other aspects of our service and the high standard of the rest of our accommodation was enough to make your walking holiday enjoyable.

Please do contact us if we can be of any further assistance.

“Sloppy unprofessional service and management”

★☆☆☆☆

written by summertowner on 20/10/2012

The three night holiday we booked with Contour Holidays included the worst accommodation I have ever paid to stay in. It was above a very noisy pub, it had not been cleaned properly, it stank of smoke and black spot mould, and had only one tiny window which overlooked the pub's back door. When I complained to Contour, they repeatedly described the pub as "lively". On the second night, we were booked in to accommodation which was at least a half hour away from the trail (which had to be retraced the following day). The instructions to get there bore little resemblance to the actual directions. Some of the facilities claimed for it did not exist. The landlady said that no one from Contour holidays had ever visited the place. Contour claimed that they had visited it many times anonymously. When I asked for a percentage rebate for a product which had not matched its description, Contour said that there were no grounds for refunds on a "predominantly successful holiday". This company is in denial, and I would certainly recommend all prospective walkers to avoid it.

Contourswalkingholidays's Response to summertowner's Review

Written on: 26/10/2012

Dear summertowner,

To address the points made above and to give readers a fair picture of the situation, I have clarified a few points below:

- The London Inn is, indeed, a lively accommodation in a central and sought after location in Padstow. It was selected to cater for some special requests that you made and was the most suitable accommodation in the area. Our clients regularly praise it and we have never had cause for concern.

- The London Inn have also addressed your complaints on TripAdvisor.
In response to your complaint we offered you (as a good will gesture for your dissatisfaction) a £25 credit voucher per person. You refused to accept this.

- On your second night, you stayed at Treliver Farm. Again, we have received no prior complaints about this accommodation and you have since posted positive comments on TripAdvisor, even rating the location as being 5 out of 5!

Our director has offered to personally revisit the accommodation and the directions to it as her family live in Padstow and she is very familiar with the area, having already walked the Saints Way and visited the accommodation anonymously.

- You fail to mention the faultless running of your luggage transfers and the third accommodation that we booked for you, The Crown Inn, which you again gave a glowing review.

Given that we have addressed all of your concerns fully, we are saddened that you see fit to post negative comments such as those above, particularly as we have provided some spectacular accommodation that you have praised on other review sites. For these reasons, we chose not to refund you the 50% that you demanded to compensate you for services that you have publicly praised online.

Your 4x £25 goodwill vouchers will remain on our system.

Kind Regards,

Contours Walking Holidays

“Poor customer service, look elsewhere”

★★☆☆☆

written by Linds_in_Zurich on 01/07/2012

We were very disappointed in the level of customer service provided by Contours and would definitely not use them again or recommend them to anyone else. Having previously booked similar walking holidays with other companies, we had expectations of the minimum acceptable standard of accommodation, which Contours failed to meet. We had phoned them prior to booking to stress that we only wanted en suite accommodation, and were told that this shouldn't be a problem as we were booking so far in advance. In the event, 2 out of the 6 nights had shared bathrooms. One particular place was cold, damp and dirty and completely unacceptable. As previous reviewers have commented, Contours seem to have no interest in accommodating their customers' requests, and are only interested in booking the very cheapest accommodation they can find and maximising their profit. On the plus side, the luggage transfers worked very well, and there was one very nice B&B in Pembroke (Woodbine). The rest ranged from so-so to downright disgusting.

Dear Reviewer,

In response to the above review, we would like to express our concern and sincerest apologies that you feel dissatisfied by your holiday. Most of our walkers return with positive feedback and praise for our service, so we are naturally concerned when comments suggest otherwise. We take all feeback, of every kind, very seriously. If you can contact our office directly and allow us to look into your concerns, we will do everything we can to address them for you.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope that we will be able to reach a satisfactory resolution to your concerns.

“Exceeded all expectations!”

★★★★★

written by mac009 on 15/06/2012

Superb service fom the very start: I had to alter our initial booking, then add one or two additional complications, all handled over the phone with courtesy, understanding and good humour - a pleasure to deal with. The various bits of paperwork all arrived on time and always included reference highlighted in red where the 'normal' service had, at my own request, been altered. Additional Literature (guide books, maps etc) proved most useful and gave us asense of 'no expense spared'. The accommodation throughout our 5-day St Cuthberts Way walk gave the sameimpression: it was of the highest standard, even better than we had dared hope for; baggage transfer was also worry-free. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Contour Holidays to anyone, and will certainly be using them again. Having organised two previous longdistance walks on a DIY basis, I can honestly say that it is worth a few extra pounds to have someone else to deal with all the hassle!

“A last minute holiday - that has got us hooked on walking!”

★★★★★

written by walkers21 on 09/10/2011

My husband and I decided to try a self-guided walking holiday at short notice - and although we did not know what to expect it was the best thing we have ever done. As novices we needed help to choose the best trail and Contours helped us with advice on what would suit us best, so we decided on a Cotswold break, which meant that we could enjoy both the walking and the lovely towns and villages along the way. We found the information provided in our tour pack to be excellent and armed with this we were confident that we would find our way, but still wary of what to expect. We did not need to worry as all of the accommodations were wonderful - they were all different, but very special in their own way. Our bags (and a warm welcome) greeted us each day, which after a great days walk, meant that all we had to do was look forward to a good meal. We booked our next walk with Contours as soon as we got home, but we might have to fit in a weekend break or two before that!

I recently went on part of the White Peak Way Walk. It was absolutely amazing, Contours had every detail arranged and everything ran so smoothly. The taxis always turned up on time for our transfers. The scenery was out of this world. The B&Bs were excellent the service provided by them was brilliant. A good choice on Contours behalf. It also helped that the weather was very good to us, it was such a fulfilling holiday. The fact that I didn't have to worry about any of it and that Contours did all the work I just had to walk and they sorted out my luggage, my accomodation and my transfers. The Contours staff was really friendly and helpful from the minute they picked up the phone to me, and I am in no hesitation to book with them again for my next walk. Thumbs up Contours job very well done.

“Fabulous, well organised walking holiday”

★★★★★

written by on 29/09/2011

I am astounded that a previous reviewer apparently had any negative comments about their holiday with Contours. It makes me wonder whether they are a business competitor. We have booked holidays every year, sometimes twice a year with Contours. And yet again we have just had one of the best holidays. The weather was not always kind, but everything went smoothly as far as the organisation of the holiday was concerned. We walked the Hadrian's Wall Path, and all the bed and breakfasts were very comfortable and well run, and no one had a negative word to say against Contours (in fact we found the opposite). Contours themselves could not have been more helpful. We found them very knowledgeable and professional. We will definitely be going back to Contours for our next holiday.

“find another tour”

★★☆☆☆

written by stephaniemiller on 08/09/2011

Avoid booking a walking holiday wit Contours Holidays. This tour firm does not deliver the facilities they advertise. Their price is above what you would pay if you book bed and breakfast in a twin en suite yourself for the West Highland Way, and this is the accommodation they advertise to facilitate. Of the 10 nights only 5 delivered twin en suite accommodation. On 2 nights we were sharing a room with 2 other women. On the first of these 2 of us were in children's bunks where there was not enough clearance to sit upright in the lower bunk. The room wasn't large enough to accommodate our 4 pieces of baggage and the one bathroom tiny. On the 2nd of these 4 of us were placed in a room for 3 and a put you up was added. On three other occasions we had twin rooms but no private facilities. The last of these was in Fort William where there was plenty of available accommodation. Despite contacting Contours in advance of arriving in Fort William to request changes and point out their inadequacies no changes were offered.

Simi.bhogal's Response to stephaniemiller's Review

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that you were disappointed with your holiday. We would like to take this opportunity to explain the circumstances pertaining to this booking. You were part of a group of 30 people (3 groups of 10 from a club) who requested to walk the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way.

Booking the West Highland Way for such a large group is a particular challenge, especially as we were informed that we had to keep the group together. In order to fulfil this request, there were occasions when we had to use triple/quadruple rooms, and when only private or shared facilities were available.

Four weeks prior to this holiday your group received all the details of the accommodations, and the room allocations. Unfortunately your request to alter the rooms in Fort William was made during the holiday, when we are already committed to our accommodation providers.

Your initial comment about our pricing does not take into account both Contours Walking Holidays arrangement fees, nor your own travel club charges.
Again, we are sorry that you were not happy with your holiday. Please do contact our office if you would like to discuss this further. We do aim to provide our clients with great walking holidays.

Poor standard of service, trip organised around the cheapest rooms in houses rather than the best stops for a walk. Not proper b and b's used really a room in a house so it makes it very cheap for contours and they charge you a fortune. Do your own booking or use another company! This company is totally disinterested in their customer experiences and very offhand and dismissive about feedback. I would never use again or recommend to anyone.

I DID call contours to complain about the standard of accommodation and the structure of the walk being arranged around cheap houses rather then what makes sense for the walker. You were totally disinterested.
Everyone was complaining about this company, the taxi drivers (saying they were poorly paid) the people offering rooms too. This company was paying the person with the room to move the luggage and taking more then them in money for the organising. when i called the company , they just said, we make nothing from single travellers! All the places i stayed said they are happy to move peoples luggage the next day..for half the price you pay. I wish i had taken a little time and arranged the trip myself, as i felt i was paying more for the expert walking arrangements.

Very helpful review. I have been trying to organise a trip with them and have found the person on the end of their phone to be hopelessly inefficient - ill/un-informed of their current offering, lacking 'walking' knowledge and blissfully unbusinesslike (e.g. never returning phone calls with promised information). I will not now book with them.

In early October, we did the 3 day, Hadrain's Wall Short Break from Lanercost to Chollerford and had an absolute blast. The 1st and 3nd days were pretty easy, but the 2nd was magnificent, even if somewhat exhausting. Our accommodation on all four nights was more than adequate and I would have no compunction in recommending the Sands Guest House in Brampton, Samson Inn in Gilsland, The Old Repeater Station in Grindon and Creencarts Farm in Hexham.

We are already looking forward to our next waling holiday and without a doubt, will use Contours Walking Holidays again.

I recently walked the Cleveland Way. A marvellous holiday, but I wish to complete a feedback form. Unfortunately my family experienced laptop problems whilst I was away and everything emailed by them before the holiday has been lost (incl lots of other files). Is it possible for them to email me a feedback form? I shall certainly use Contours when I do a future long distance path, everything they organised worked perfectly.
