“Having read all the previous negative reviews I was...”

★★★★★

written by grumpybear on 13/04/2010

Having read all the previous negative reviews I was really nervous about visiting Bluestone and had very low expectations. I have to say my concerns were totaly and completely unfounded. The negative early reviews are just not representive of my experience last week.

Firstly, lets be clear, this is not Center Parcs! We went last year to CP at Longleat and it was just awful. This is very very different. For a start,I's smaller, friendlier and personal, there are no overpriced chain restaurants, no travel lodge style rooms,no shouting families,no tattoos, BMW's, fake tanned "orange" mums, gangs of roaming teens or spolied brats in football shirts...and no "designer" hoodies !!..So then, it's clearly for a different client base.

Our Accomodation(caldey lodge) was clean tidy and cosy. Top end appliances for gadget snobs(smeg/bosch)and the muted colour schemes give the lodge a
smart but relaxed and tasteful theme.I can't fault it. i don't understad the comments about the wetrooms, they work just fine.

Spa was clean, good value and very relaxing. no poseurs or fake tan in there either !! Smithy Pizzas lovely but huge. Tafarn(thes pub) is not expensive at £3.25 a pint, £9.75 main meal for fresh local produce. Peter in the off licence (6.75 a bottle for a nice rose) is a star, offering try before you buy. Daily specials and they try to get thr food from local providers where they can.

While the park is 550 acres but feels cosier and they've tried to create a village atmosphere with he cottages together over looking the central green/pub and Barn. This works well with the children playing happily in a safe and tasteful area while the parents share a glass of wine, many parents actively involved with their children and creating a family feel to the place.
If the cottages aren't your thing then the lodges are spread further apart. There are plenty of trees and shrubs for screening but they will take a while to get established. the Lake in the centre is a great idea and helps with the tranquil vibe of the place. With Cars being banned on site and the buggies being electric and quite slow, it makes you feel relaxed and running at a slower pace.

what wasn't clear in the literature is that everything has been purpose built, including the shops and again it's smart and tasteful. There's a bakery doing all the usual, with fresh bread every day, a village shop with normal prices, a toyshop, a clothes shop( animal and surfy stuff)
all next to the pub/ barn/restaurant complex, overlooking the green.

Activities. The Adventure centre was new this year and offered avdenture playground ( 4-10 yearold I'd say) soft play, techiquest( science based machines and experiments, lego building, games room and a cafe. It's 7.50 all day for the kids 2.50 for adults but you can come and go as you please. We went on our last day and it softened the blow for the kids of going home and filled the time form 1000 check out to 4pm home time.

there is a good mix of activies on and off the park, which they are adding to. My children were too young for most of them so can't comment personally.

Pool area..Blue lagoon is great, smaller than Centre parks but enough to keep my 3 & 5 y'old happy. Lazy river etc, hot tub and waves. Slides good but quick and be aware that oudoor ones are deeper than the look. ok for competent swimmers. Plenty of seats for non swimmers and cafe on wet side as well as dry(nice). Yes, it is open on some days to non residents, but on the four days we went(easter holidays) there were only 6 non residents using it.(I checked with reception). The only issues with the pool are there are only three family changing rooms which might be issue in summer hols and that one of the older female life guards was unpleasant to guests, very over officious and was whistle happy ( The other younger girls and lads however were brilliant and it is her issue rather than Bluestone's training/ethos)

Yes it is close to oakwood theme park and yes you can see the top of the roller coaster from some parts of the park. My heart sank when I was this on arrival and compounded my negative perception from the reviews I'd read. However, it really isn't and issue whilst there is the occasional noise, it's really not enough to worry about.

Staff. Apart from the pool lady with anger issues about her fading glory, they are just brilliant. Not just trained "have a nice day" monkeys but really nice and are interested in you. from reception to spa to pub and even Matt the roving magician, they are polite and knowledgable about the park, not just their "bit" eg; waitress knew about wifi access in the lodges and the prices of spa treatments. Impressive stuff.

Value for money. we paid £500 for a 3 night stay. £50 for a buggy and £100 on treatments about £150 on food drink over the weekend for a family of four. ok, not cheap but value for money, yes !!We will be going back without a shadow of a doubt.

Observations...Be aware, this is a new- ish park ( 2008) so the trees when establish will provide a greater amount of screening. Be aware of that and it'll only get better.
Kids food is lovely and fresh but meal deal( main, drink, icecream)at £6.50 in the tafarn is a bit pricey.
The park feels more outdoorsy and less polished that other similar parks, it has rough edges to paths and some of the patios are weeded and the grass not cut like a bowls green etc. If you are likely to be obsessive about these things then you might feel it's untidy. Personally I'd rather know that the focus was on customer service and keeping the public areas clean than keeping a tractor mower going 7 days a week.

Overall, it's easy to draw comparisons with Center parcs but there's more to it than that. having done both in last 6 months I can comment accurately and I have to say Bluestone is pitched at a different client base and the clues are everywhere. The car park is littered with Audi and Mercedes, not BMW's and Range Rover sports. The pub does's sell STELLA but the wine bar will let you try before you buy. Dads tend to wear shoes rather than trainers, mums were yummy not scummy and there's no bingo or happy hour. There is also a lack of smokers and football shirts. In terms of activities, they are family orientated rather than individual pursuits. It is quiet, relaxing and peaceful.

So, if you are a shouty family with a Rangerover, designer gear and adrenaline junky teenagers, or dress your kids like trainee lapdancers you will hate it. Stick to Longleat.

If you are a decent family with well behaved children dressed in crew/joules/whitestuff/crocs and want to spend a relaxing time together in a peaceful park with like minded families. You'll love it.

Apologies if this upsets anyone, but never have I seen so clearly that money doesn't buy you class nor teaches your children how to behave.

Bluestone is a good destination for decent families and we'll be back.

Yes it is Hilly, but the Buggies at £50 for the weekend if you're that Idle quickly gets round the problem.

I think this reviewer summed it up when she said that money doesn't buy you class - you only have to look at her very unpleasant comments to see that. As far as I'm aware, Bluestone does not have an exclusive policy - and it's certainly NOT an exclusive resort!

Yikes! I drive a BMW and my daughter wears hand-me-downs from Next, yet I didn't feel out of place at my recent visit. I found the carpark to be full of Volkswagens and Renaults, so I guess my dad's Mercedes must have improved the standard a bit. That said, I don't smoke or have any tatoos, so perhaps I wasn't in the wrong place after all...

Wow - this person is amazing! How shallow. I take it her children are dressed in Joules head to toe !!! For someone who likes that fact that Bluestone isn't too commercial, brands are all she cares about. Try therapy.

We have just returned from a 4 day break to Bluestone. The accomodation and facilities were excellent. The Smithy restaurant make the best pizza ever but be warned they are massive. We stayed in a 1 bed cottage which was cosy and spacious. As Arnie says "I'll be back"

We stayed at Bluestone, Wales and it was absoulutely amazing! The swimming pool is spacious and fun for kids. There are Party's on the Fridays and sometimes Saturday evenings. We absoulutely LOVED the high rope and zip course which is new to the centre although i wouldn't reccomend it to those scared of heights as you are suspended from mid air- 30 ft up. The Well Spa was absoultely amazing you could choose from loads of treatments and the childrens 'spa fairies' was good because you had your money back at the end to pay for nail products in their shop.
Oakwood Theme Park was SO close you could see the people on the rides while you were there. During the day the noise from oakwood was fairly loud- but not TOO loud.

“I have just spent my first weekend at Bluestone with...”

★★★★★

written by on 29/03/2010

I have just spent my first weekend at Bluestone with three girlfriends and I can't wait to go back! We opted for a spa weekend package (excellent value at £99) and had a fabulous time. Every single member of staff we saw went out of their way to be friendly and helpful and made us feel truly special. We didn't find a single "rule" that they were not prepared to bend to accomodate us!

The therapists, though very busy and working long days, were cheerful and friendly - and very good! Having been to Centre Parcs several times before, we were thrilled to find a very quiet spa where we were often the only people in the steam room.

Treatments were no more expensive than anywhere else (spa entry is free if you have a treatment, or £15 for a full day pass - whereas Centre Parcs (at last visit) was £35 for three hours). Though, as a previous reviewer says, availability did seem a bit limited, so perhaps more staff are required?

We had Sunday lunch in the Granary yesterday and it was absolutely delicious - and plenty of it! Prices seemed quite reasonable to me, but then, I am used to Bristol prices - and don't have to feed a family.

I am amazed at the number of negative comments about the layout (particularly hillyness) of the park and the fact that the pool is "a long way away". Utter rubbish! Have these people never been the Centre Parcs?! I am the most unfit person ever, but it was only a 10 minute walk from our accommodation in the centre of the village to the pool. We were there on Saturday lunchtime and it was very quiet and pleasant.

We had a brilliant time and will all, without doubt, be going back. Soon!

Just returned from my second visit to Bluestone and am heading back again in a few weeks! The first time was a week's break with two very small children, the second was an overnight stay with some girlfriends. I cannot fault the place. Staff were unbelievably nice and helpful; food was lovely and I didn't think overpriced, accomodation was very spacious and of a high standard; spa was wonderful. I'm staggered at some of the negative comments for other guests - they can't have been to the vastly inferior centre parcs! the location is fabulous for trips to the back etc and there is lots to do. As for comlianing about a short walk up a hill to get to the pool...words fail me.

Have just returned from a 4 day midweek break, and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay.I really cant fault the place. The accomodation was very spacious, with everything catered for.The swimming pool was amazing ( even the water turned green for St Patricks day !!).We ate at the Smithies and the tavern a few times, and first thought was a little on the expensive side, but you got what you paid for, delicious food...the welsh breakfast was amazing !..All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Some previous comments go on about the hills etc at the park....they really werent a problem...good to get a little exercise, plus you could hire golf carts should you need to.All in all....cant wait to go back.

written by on 26/02/2010

The lodge was good and comfortable. The wet room really could have had a bath as well. The hob was a nightmare to get to work. The layout of the site meant lots of uphill walking.Considering this I think buggy hire should have been far cheaper. Why couldn't they give you your pass for Blue Lagoon in with the pack when you arrive? The food at the pool was really unimpressive and expensive for what it was. I don't know how a place like this in Wales gets away with having no bilingual information. You could have been anywhere in England. Considering they built on part of a Welsh National Park at least they could have had the decency to reflect this in the complex. The staff were friendly and helpful but often just weren't able to help. I would go again but only on a special offer. I dread to think what it would be like in high season.

Fairly disappointing for our mid-week break in the off-season.

Smart venue but we found the customer service to be pretty poor. Having paid over £500 for a 4 night break, we were staggered by the addition of numerous 'stealth' charges on top (e.g. £10 for a cot). Bluestone Wales seems to be positioning itself as an equivalent to Ryanair....except the original price is not cheap!

Staggeringly short-sighted & miserly.

“If you want to steer clear of the usual theme bars,...”

★★★★★

written by on 12/02/2010

If you want to steer clear of the usual theme bars, load entertainment and bright lights then this could be for you.
Accomodation is 1st class, Blue lagoon (swimming / leisure pool) is excellent, surrounding area has breath taking scenery and the best beaches in Britain. Staff very friendly and best of all you are left to your own devices - if you want to book facilities and activities you can, if you just want some peace and quiet then thats what you get.
The only negative would be that one or two cars were left on site when it clearly states that without a special badge they should be removed.
Not recommended for OAPs unless fit and/or with family - golf carts available for hire to get you around.

I found this review not helpful because...the opinion expresses the holiday makers shortcomings and not the parks - for example:
1. TV took some working out - there are clear instructions in the welcome book
2. Unpractical for 2 little ones - Our 3 year old loved it, the website makes it quite clear what you get and therefore you should be able to judge suitability for youngsters
3. No radio, iron, washing machine - These aren't offered as part of the package, facilities are clearly described on website.
4. Golf range - in my experience they are generally just a mat and balls (although aknowledge in this case it's a bit basic - but fun)
5. £3.25 a pint is usual city centre / holiday camp cost where ever you go, it's certainly not London prices (ask any rugby supporter)
6. A trek up to car park - that's what it's about, getting off you lazy rear and doing something... or hire a buggy!

Overall an excellent get away.

Good Points - Caldey Lodge spacious with modern facilities. Ideal location for quiet relaxing break, picturesque location, lovely nature trail type walks, nice spa facilities and great pool. Staff within the village location very friendly.

Bad points - Onsite prices in shops, pubs & restaurants a little overpriced. Winter activites onsite limited with opening times of wine bar, sports hall and restaurants closing ealier than expected.

Would reccommend to anyone for a relaxing get away break, planning to revisit next year.

The cottage was warm with plenty of hot water and equipped with everything you could want, all high quality, dish washer (and the dishwashing tablets), microwave, fridge, cutlery all like new.
The fitness suite and pool were a bonus well equipped with modern technology, and very experienced friendly staff, especially with the weather being so awful.
Shops were well stocked for essentials and not too expensive.
Would I go again yes Would I recommend it yes.Did I enjoy the experience yes.

Just returned from a wonderful midweek break with my husband and my 3 year old son. We found the accomodation fantastic, people very friendly and superb value for money.(We booked 1 week before).
I would definately recommend Bluestones, Wales for all thoughs outdoor types, who don`t mind cycling or walking no matter what the weather. The restaurants were to a very high standard, however some were closed whilst we were there which limited our choice.
A couple of mistakes were made when making bookings for activities for my son, which ment we missed one, and had to re-arrange another. Be sure to double check the time and dates!
However this did not detract from what was a brilliant holiday!

“We stayed for 4 nights mid week during Bluestones...”

★★★★★

written by on 01/11/2009

We stayed for 4 nights mid week during Bluestones Halloween week. Our accommodation was exactly as described, a spacious two bedroom cabin (Caldey) with views over woodland to the rear and across the beautiful valley to the front. The kitchen was well fitted with dishwasher and extensive utensils. They even supplied dishwasher tablets, just one of the little attentions to details we weren't expecting. One double and a good size single bedroom, all nicely fitted out. Yes, the wet room took a little getting use to, but we were not there to stay in our cabin - there was far too much to cram in.

Our best investment was to hire a golf buggy to get around. The valley is quite hilly. This fun mode of transport made getting around quick and easy. We would not have got to all the children's activities on time with out it. Plus the children loved it.

Eating out was good and whilst not cheap, the quality and choice was to a high standard. We dined in three of the four eateries where all the staff were friendly and keen to please.

Bluestone made a big effort for Halloween. There was a spooky film night, Halloween party with pumpkin making all ending with a parade around the lake with The Grand Wizard.

Most of the Children's events were extra, but we were on holiday and were looking to make the most of our stay. We were impressed with the simple supervised treks in the woods with the children; bug hunting, making a fire and toasting marsh mellows etc. We also booked the Battlefield Live. Paint balling in the woods but without the paint This was great fun if not a little muddy.

Most of the staff were young and were a credit to the management who had obviously trained them well.

A short trip to the spa was a welcome and relaxing break. The contrast from all the running around to the tranquillity of the treatment rooms was just what the grownups needed. Again the staff were focused on making our stay an enjoyable one.

The Blue Lagoon and sports hall were away from the accommodation, which is where the buggy came in helpful. Every thing was clean and well maintained bearing in mind the amount of through traffic they must have.

The only down side was that the Blue Lagoon was open to the public as well as guests of Bluestone making it at times a little busy. This however did not spoil our enjoyment of the facilities.

We all enjoyed our stay and will defiantly try and fit in another visit sometime next year. Well recommended.

Very nice accomodation but unpractical with 2 little ones. The stair gates had amind of their own. No radio, no iron / ironing board. No washing machine. No where to put prams outdoor clothes etc. Brilliant location and views. Wet room nice but not very practical. The TV kept sticking and took som working out out to how it came on. A treck up to car park. The golf range was a mat and some markers in field. Putting range was overgrown It is really only the poolyou are paying for. Restaurants are pricey with beer £3.25 a pint. You know when you are getting ripped off when beer is priced at london prices in south wales. Would not go again.

We recently stayed at Bluestone, and to be honest it was a disappointment. All you are really paying for is accommodation (which is not five star by any stretch of the imagination) and a swimming pool. Overpriced, badly run and aspirations of being something it is not. If it wasn't for hoseasons (who have never let us down) we would be asking for a full refund!!

“Bluestone Park, Narbeth, Pembrokeshire. ”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 07/09/2009

Bluestone Park, Narbeth, Pembrokeshire.
Date of stay: Monday 31st Aug - Friday 4th Sept 2009.
(Discounted off peak price of £299 for 4 nights - midweek)

PLEASE NOTE: The water park is open to NON-residents of the park as well as residents!

Due to the above it gets very busy even during the quieter off peak times!

This was a big disappointment for us as we went there off peak specifically, hoping it would be quieter for our young daughter, but instead it was filled with teenagers and families from the local area and consequently...lots of long queues for the slides! The park itself was very quiet in comparison though, as this is only for residents.

Very clean looking place on the whole but the lodge we stayed in was not particulary clean inside, and also was not ready when we pulled up outside at check in time (3.30pm) We had to wait in the car in the rain for 25 minutes, whilst they finished cleaning it. We stayed in a 'Ramsey' lodge and I agree with previous reviews that the wetrooms (no bath) in the lodge were inconvenient as they just fill the small floor area with water, and also there is no seperate toilet.

We only dined in the one of the restaurants on one evening, and that was enough! An open kitchen area serving up steaks and fish etc. As we sat and waited for our food I observed the chefs handling raw meat and fish, then WITHOUT washing their hands, they were handling cooked food and plates...this forced me to leave without eating my meal as I couldn't stomach it after such poor hygiene standards, and cross contamination risks.

Activities for younger children were ok but expensive (As I expected though to be honest, having been to Center Parcs every year for the last 7 years and paying equally as expensive prices for this sort of thing)

On the plus side they have golf buggies for hire at £20 per day for a 4 seater, £25 for a 6 seater or £45/£50 for 3 day hire, but when you compare this to cycle hire for the same amount of people then I suppose it's not a bad deal and they were convenient and fun, especially as the water park is so far away from the lodges.

We took our own cycles and found the cycle track a sufficient distance for children but the ride to the water park has very steep hills for the younger/older ones and we were glad to have a golf buggy for one of the days.

The Well Spa was lovely and we had a nice afternoon in there for £10 each which was reasonable, but that price was discounted from £15 with a voucher they gave us on arrival.

The highlight of the week was the firework display at the lake which they have every Thursday evening, and luckily for us it was a clear and mild evening (the only day it didn't rain but I can't blame them for that;-)) and the children really enjoyed that, and for the ones who had made lanterns at the lantern making session, they got to light them and float them on the lake... which looked lovely at nightime.

If you compare the amount of things to do with Center Parcs, then you would be disappointed as it is nowhere near as action packed. However if you are looking for something quieter then it would be pleasant. If the water park was residents only then this would make a big difference. Unfortunately (And aside from the other issues) I wouldn't go back for that reason alone. I'm just glad we had the discounted off peak price, as it just wouldn't have been worth the money had we paid the £600-odd full price.

We've just been to Bluestone mid-August. Great place and lovely lodges but don't like the wetrooms - The whole floor is soaked and if you go back in once you're dressed you get soaking wet feet. Chipping green was non-existent and hadn't been mown for weeks/months. Get fit before you go to get up the hill to the Blue Lagoon -unless you're hiring a buggy which we couldn't afford. The minibus service isn't very frequent.

Please get the grass cut on a more frequent basis and get different beds. The bed was awful you could feel evey single spring.(I weigh 14st.)

Overall a great place to stay for the whole family.

Fantastic stay. We stayed at Calday lodge by a lake. We went with some friends. The swimming pool was brill. It had three water slides, rapids and a wave machine. On Friday night you could go down on the outdoor slide on rubber rings and they had a Caribean night and a beach party. There was activities on site that were excellent. Archery we had a go at. It was a bit expensive but still had a good time. They had aser clay shooting a driving range. Theme park next door. Not that noisy and it was quite soothing or it would have been too quiet. There was buggy hire and bike hire. We hired bikes and they were really good. Bluestone was good value for money. Room could have done with a bit more clean but overall excellent.
