Apollo FS 26 Summary

Apollo is the UK’s best-selling bike brand, stocked by Halfords which means 1 in 3 of the bikes in the UK are made by Apollo. Apollo Cycles also make Kids' bikes, Road bikes, and Mountain bikes which come with full dual suspension, and range in price from £100-250.

These are bikes which are at the cheaper end of the scale, so expect them to be heavy, especially with the dual suspension. Regular riders look down at the Apollo range for its cheaper components, but many thousands of second-hand owners have enjoyed these bikes for many years, often for only 10s of pounds.

Reviewers said of the Apollo FS 26 bike that it “had been great”, that the disk brakes were “powerful”, and that it is a “tough, smooth, well-made and beautiful bike.”

To note, the pedals on this Apollo 26-inch mountain bike are low to the ground.

“I bought my Appolo FS26 approximately 18 months ago...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/03/2010

I bought my Appolo FS26 approximately 18 months ago from Halfords. Had nothing but problems with the chain coming off the sprockets, pedals jamming, chain broke after on a month. Not used on heavy terrain. Only use it to get to and from work (3 mile journey each way, by road). Done less than 200 miles and the wheel bearings have just had to be replaced. The spokes on the front wheel have had to be "Trued" as they were practically falling out and now has gone back to the shop for the 12th time in 18 months as the front end has significant "wobble". Shop suspects headrace worn and possible issues with forks. Definately would not recommend. Been nothing but trouble.

“Just bought this bike from halfords "Apollo FS.26 17"...”

written by on 01/02/2010

Just bought this bike from halfords "Apollo FS.26 17" Mens Full Suspension Mountain Bike" , I have read other reviews on here and was worried about it, when I seen the price had come down to £139.99 I jumped at it, and am glad I have for that price I know I can't go wrong with it.

I will be using the bike to get to & from work 6 miles return journey each day, this bike is excellent for this price, I have used it twice and happy so far with it, brakes are really good, suspension is great, the gears change really quick and easy it is a really good ride & very light too, like someone says "am not going to climb everest with it.

This is the ideal bike to get started with at this price if your thinking of getting in to this sport what you got to lose, plus you get a free service after six weeks, I have bought the Haynes bike book to teach my self more about repairing bikes myself, so with the money I saved on this bike and the help from the book am on to a winner.

I found this review very helpful because... I have just this morning, ordered this bike to enable me to ride our local track with my 10 year grandson. The track is easy and the review was very re-assuring. The price has fallen again and I took advantage of the 3 year warranty package. I collect tomorrow and feel that at the price that I have paid I know what to expect. Finally, I always find the staff in Halfords to be really helpful.

GREAT BIKE FOR THE PRICE :D
I have just purchased this Apollo FS 26 bike from Halfords for £138 as it was 1/3 off weekend, they built it for free and are giving me a free service. I have read a lot of other reviews criticising the bike, but seriously you get what you pay for, its a decent bike for its price, I am not going to go up everest on it, so I will probably never need to push the bike to its max, all I know is that it does the same stuff a carrera bike will do for about £150 less and its worth every penny, but I wouldn't pay the original £209 for this bike. The full suspension is great and so are the v brakes and the gears are smooth :)

I own 6 Apollo FS 26S and they spend all their time on rough terrain in the Austrian Alps. For the price they perform amazingly. They get VERY bad treatment and just keep going - albeit with regular maintenance. The original crank bearings did need replacing and the brakes need regular adjustment. The gears cause little problems and chains only come flying off die to mis-treatment and the users lack of understanding about changing gear - you CAN'T just twist the grip! The bikes cost £70 on Ebay and I keep looking for more! PS anyone putting a push bike into a shop for new brake pads doesn't deserve a push bike - do it yourself!

“This Apollo FS 26 bike is the worst bike I have ever...”

This Apollo FS 26 bike is the worst bike I have ever purchased! Instead of going for a cheap, unreliable bike, i decided to go for a more expensive one, hoping to get some reliability. I spent 450 pounds on it, and it hasn't worked right once. The gears seem to jam, the crank wears out with 2 months, spokes brake, the front brake gets stuck, the rear brake doesn't even bother to do that, and the suspension was about as much use as a snooze button on a smoke alarm. And finally, the chain snaps, twice. Both situations leave me no option but to push it over 10 miles home. It's a perfectly reliable bike, provided you take elementry precautions, like every time you ride it more than a yard, you have it professionally stripped down and rebuilt.

I bought the Apollo FS 26 from Halfords, and they are not very good at customer services in my opinion. I've had one for less than a year and so far, the rear wheel virtually collapsed with 7 broken spokes, the brakes frequently jam either on or off, and every time i wash it, more bits of the paint come off. True, every time I take it back with faults, they fix them, or at least try, but they don't seem very happy about it. It looks quite nice - from a distance anyway.

I replaced a non suspension bike with this and noticed a big difference. The Apollo FS 26 is really good for riding normal roads - as they are becoming roungher and rougher with more pot holes. The gears are set very low and Im not too keen on this.

“I TOOK MINE BACK IT BEGAN TO FALL APART AFTER 5 WEEKS ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Nick7213 on 31/10/2008

I TOOK MINE BACK IT BEGAN TO FALL APART AFTER 5 WEEKS
I was impressessed when i first bought the bike but just a few weeks later the brake pads wore away so i could hardly brake and the gears kept slipping and the gripshift gear change started to fail.
Halfords fixed the problems with the gears at the free service but wanted to charge me £15 for new brake pads just six weeks after purchase. I got them free after I complained. After the service, the bike really started to fall apart. The gears quickly screwed up again and the brake pads wore away. I had two punctures because of cheap tyres and the chain broke in two at one point. The bike also started making all sorts of clinking and mechanial noises and the front tyre started rubbing against the frame making another annoying noise. A few days ago, the chain began getting stuck in the cheap plastic ring surrounding the cogs when i moved it to third gear and every time this happened, i had to spend 10 minutes at the roadside fixing it, only for to happen again a few minutes later.
I decided to take the bike back and this is when I realised that the wire connecting the brake handle to the brake pad was about to snap as it had become very thin at one point. If i had ridden it any further, it could have snapped and could have killed me. It could be very dangerous.
This bike would have literally fallen apart if i had ridden it any further. Halfords gave me my money back and i bought a Carrera Subway 1 for £185 down from £280 to replace it. This is a much better bike.
It is a deathtrap in my opinion that will fall apart so don't make the same mistake I did and spend at least £180 on a decent bike. Apollo are very poor and the once prestigious Raleigh are not much better these days.
To be fair, I was riding it quite a few miles every day which is a bit too much for a cheap bike. This bike should be OK if you are only planning to use it occasionally, otherwise according to the sales assistant at Halfords, you should spend at least £250 on a bike that you want to use every day. If you want to spend less than that then buy one in sale like I did where you can get one with an RRP of higher than £250 for around £180 or £200

I found this review helpful because I agree with the £250 comment. My wife has just bought a £117 (from £189) from Halfords. I hope we dont have too many problems, well none at all!

Overall i am happy with my purchase. The gripshifts need replacing after about 8 weeks as they seem to be made with cheap plastic. hopefully Halfords will replace them without fuss, and then i will be a happy bunny again.

Great bike for the price. Has everything you would want from a mountain bike unless of course you are a pro and then I guess you would be considering the weight and would want foot holders etc. My last bike, 8-9 years old, was a Dawes which was quite expensive and was considered a quality bike in its day. As materials are so cheap now days and technology has moved on, the Apollo walks all over the Dawes. Definitely a good buy!

“The Apollo FS26 was for us a very cheap - about £105 -...”

★★★★☆

written by kiyawhite on 22/08/2007

The Apollo FS26 was for us a very cheap - about £105 - replacement for my previous Barracuda bicycle (which had cost about £250) that had recently been stolen out of my homes vacinity, therefore not being covered by household insurance.

The bike didn't seem to lack anything that I wanted, and I really liked the appearance of the spokes of the tyres. Circular handle gears are mandatory for most manufacturers now, or so they fell, so the addition of these of this bike was of no surprise since the technology had been in use for some time now, anyway.

The bike gives a very comfortable ride. The Appole Full-Suspension Technology gives a real smooth a cheery feeling to your riding and the bell, although illegal to not have, is still nice to have there.

It only took me about 3 months of weekly short bursts of use to wear the tyre treads down to pretty much nothing, but still about 1 years and 10 months later the tyres still do work to some degree although they may not be worthy of riding on A or M categorized roads - which I do not do anyway. If you were to fell you need new tyres, they would cost you a maximum of £19.99 each for the original, but strengthened, set. If that's too much you can always substitute for a cheaper alternative from anywhere else so as long as you get the right size.

Although a mountain bike, there doesn't seem to have been made any effort to look after the rider during mountainous riding; there are no mud guard, shoe holds or even a drinks holder...but these can all be added optionally by you at a cost at a later time if you wish for these commodities.

I have had this bike for over a 2 years now and in that time I have grown! That seat and those handles have quickly crept up and now both are at their limits and have been for about 6months. This is irritating because in the future this could mean that the bike is poor for my needs and I may need to invest more money in a larger bike in the future. Still, I guess that's partly my fault, although I still feel that more effort should have been made to allow the bike to be more expandable.

But, all-in-all, this is a fantastic bike!
