just be aware that if, for any reason, you cancel your car insurance, you will be charged a £50 cancellation fee

The £50 charge is not just for cancelling a policy, we changed cars so just needed the current policy updating and have still been charged £50!!

“Poor Windscreen Replacement Service”

★★★☆☆

written by TitusWhalen on 15/09/2016

Contacted Saga Tuesday Morning re broken windscreen. Cannot drive car. Given wrong number for glass line (unobtainable) Eventually got through to Autowindscreens ( Saga agent ). Earliest they could do repair was on Friday, if I drove to Ipswich (220 miles return, probably 4 hours plus repair time) Going away next week so nothing possible until 13 days. Auto windscreens want excess payment (£75) upfront before they will even book a provisional date. Had similar problems 3 years ago with different car Saga complaints helpful when they realised the problem and agreed to alternative company which I negotiated.Job booked for Thursday this week. Had to pay full amount for replacement and wait for refund ( less excess) from Saga. I think using Autowindscreens is not working for Saga. May look elsewhere for insurance because of this matter alone.

“Rip off mercahnts”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Barbara Aimson on 18/06/2016

Had all our Insurance with them for many years. After 14years we decided to change the car, I rang to inform them, it would be £150 extra for the remaining 9 months, which I thought was excessive. For the first time ever I decided to try Compare the Market, got one for nearly £200 less, even the excess was £50 less. Rang & informed them, even, the customer service agent agreed their car insurance is the dearest. We expected a refund, cancellation charge £50, I was very unhappy about that. Come buildings & contents renewal I will certainly go on Compare the Market again. I have reported it to the Financial Service Ombudsman who informed me they do charge anything from £25 upwards, trust Saga to be in the highest bracket

when I took out my policy with Saga for my car I was not told about this cancellation fee. Its ridiculous and I have put a complaint in as I was not told about it when purchasing. I will take it to the Ombudsman and further if necessary! There are many people with this same complaint on this site alone!!

“used to be good but it seems greed has overtaken them”

written by sariq12 on 04/06/2016

no longer are saga the bastion of over fifties drivers, this past year has seen them far overpriced compared to many other non-exclusive insurers. despite my 20+yrs claim free, totally clean driving licence etc etc and being with saga for several years, now theyve decided they dont want anyone over fifty ooor they think anyone over fifty is easy meat to rip off perhaps. on go compare they are £160 more expensive ,ive just checked, than the first 10 cheapest/cheaper quotes. and what for?.. shame on you saga, ripping off your loyal long time customers...hmm,ex customers now and shame on the telesales woman who got very nasty when i asked for my no claims proof,i suspect that wont be forthcoming either and legal recourse will have to ensue in order to get it. looking forward to seeing slimy saga wriggling on bbc watchdog .

“devious and deceitful”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Lamy on 26/04/2016

They repeatedly tried to bully me to accept changes to my policy to extract additional money from me. I was threatened with the consequences of 'an insurer forced cancellation' if I did not. The dispute was over the acceptance of my NCD proof, which was validated by my previous insurer. They did not want to apply it yet insisting that I pay more rather than reject my initial application and refund my payment, made in full for the year. I kept all email correspondences and recorded their telephone calls. I submitted a formal complaint to the FCA. After a very stressful and harassing dispute, I received almost all of my money refunded.

“STRESSFULL USELESS NEVER AGAIN”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McCoy483 on 19/04/2016

I tried Saga car insurance this year now I am getting older . NEVER NEVER again. Other drivers be warned that their windscreen cover is useless as they cannot get a replacement windshield done in in less than 19 days for any car. I had several large 12 inch cracks across the windscreen after being hit by a stone and expected a quick repair. I complained to Saga that this long delay was unacceptable and was told that they only use one repair company and that there were long delays. I asked to speak to a supervisor at Saga and was told she would not speak to me as it was not their problem !! I phoned several other major repair companies one of whom came the nextday but Saga will only pay £25 towards the cost as I did not use their own company. My CHEAP Saga quote gave me a cheap useless service and lots of stress. It has cost me more money. Can't wait to go back to my old Insurance company and avoid SAGA at all costs.

“Aptly named - SAGA!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/04/2016

Following an minor accident in March 2015 my experience with Saga has been a complete and utter disappointment. The insurance section was fine but as soon as the claims section took over - nightmare. The matter was overlooked on two occasions, both for a three month period, eventually the was 'lost'. Each time I phoned, I was reassured the matter was being dealt with. Obviously it wasn't. Lyons Davidson took over Saga Law and promised to complete the matter with haste, however, it is still outstanding. Another phone call to Lyons Davidson today to be told once again that they've not done anything. I will never use Saga again or recommend them to anybody. Very, very disheartened.

“Saga has changed for the worse”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 23/03/2016

It seems that things have changed at Saga, my initial feeling is that suddenly Saga has become a rip off business. Why? read on.... We have insured our 2 cars with Saga for the last 4 years. Each year I have had to negotiate to get a renewal price similar to the previous year, and I have no problem with negotiation, but now things appear to have changed even though nothing has changed with our details, no claims no penalty points, nothing. The renewal cost of one car has gone from £220 to £415 and the second car has gone from £200 to £276. A search of comparison sites shows that we can get insurance at similar prices to last year and with reputable insurers. I decided to call Saga and negotiate. While on Hold listening to the recorded message I heard that for any motor or house insurance there would be a seperately invoiced arrangment fee of £20. This is new, it never was the case previously. This message clearly shows that Saga are simply an intermediary just like all the comparison websites who do Not charge a separate fee. The message then told me, Sorry for the Delay we are Very Busy... I put the phone down. I then did a Review search and found many negative comments regarding Saga and the way they badly managed the claims of insured parties. This was not the case with Saga two years ago. So, back to the comparisons and already I have decided to use Admiral whose price is £214 for the car that Saga quoted £415. Good luck.

“Complete fiasco after an accident that wasn't my fault”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SafetyPerson2 on 17/03/2016

Decided to take out car insurance with Saga as they are advertisements stress they are for the over 50's. What a joke. After someone ran into my car I managed to get two witness names and contact details in case of any future complications. I telephoned their so called claims department and explained the accident in detail and was immediately told that it was my fault. After arguing my case for several minutes the lady informed me that her company work on behalf of Saga for all claims and she would have to check with her superiors. Someone from this claim company telephoned a few days later and asked me the same questions to which I had to explain in detail again exactly what happened. He said that he had actually tried to draw out the scenario to better understand the situation and eventually agreed that it would be a 50% to 50% case and I would have to claim my half of the expense myself. Once again I had to argue my case and informed him that I was not willing to pay anything as it was not my fault. He then informed me that my claim would be forwarded to the Saga claims team. After several weeks I received a telephone call from Saga who informed me that they had now received my claim details and one of the witness statements saying that I was stationary when the opther car hit me. He also mentioned that I would be kept informed once the other witness statement arrived. Another few weeks passed before I received another phone call to say the other witness statement had arrived which verified my original statements and that this information would now be put to their legal team.I was put on hold at this time.He then informed me that my claim would be sent to the other partys insurance company as they all agreed that I was not at fault. He then informed me that I would have to pay the £250 excess towards this claim as I did-not have legal protection. This begs the question as to why I had taken out fully comprehensive insurance in the first place if I had to pay out even if I was not at fault. After he tried to justify this excess charge I informed him to just drop the whole the claim as it I was not willing to pay out anything. To conclude. Even if the Saga motor insurance premium is cheaper do-not take it as they will not admit to anything, nor will they help you make a claim against the other party if at fault.

“More money for nothing!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Fedupdriver on 14/03/2016

Fully comp insurance I have,Got a stone chip on the windscreen I did, size of a cooked grain of rice it was.Phoned Saga the next morning I did, advised chip would be repaired in Three weeks I was. After one week the chip grew to over 10 millimetres it did.Contacted Saga again I did.Was advised would now need a complete windscreen and I would have to pay £75 right away which I did.The installation date was given as the same date that the original stone chip was supposed to be repaired it was.The installation date came and the person who was to do the job had called in sick .Advised through the Glass company who work on behalf of Saga that a new date would be arranged I was.Explained that I had already booked my car in for its M O T and surely it would fail the test with a chipped windscreen.Advised that I would be contacted as soon as possible I was.Contacted I have not been!I am getting the impression that if I lost the full windscreen at the time of the stonechip I would still be without a windscreen now I am.What was supposed to be a 2 minute job with a bit of glue is coming upto a month now it is.Beginning to understand why so many people do not bother with insurance. Obviously the issue is not resolved and from experience so far I am expecting at the very least more loss of money at least I am, along with waiting for the call from Saga and their "agents"

“Really bad service from start to finish”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Maximus1963 on 26/02/2016

My car was hit in a car park and the person in question admitted liability so I presumed it would be straightforward. Their were 2 relatively small dents to 2 doors on the passenger side, not huge damage. About 10 days after the initial accident my car was called into one of the garages that Saga uses. I didn't envisage a problem. I was given a courtesy car as per my insurance cover. I heard nothing for 2 weeks. I contacted Saga on a number of occasions asking as to why my car wasn't ready. After a number of calls to Saga and a number of emails, Saga admitted that they were at fault. The accessor for insurance purposes for some reason had put a mark against the claim, and as to date no one is explaining what this mark was. I have been told on numerous occasions that work on the car would begin, only to find out it hadn't begun at all.My car has and is still in the garage, now on week 5 is at last being fixed. I have not had an explanation of why this has happened, but I certainly won't be using them again.

Extremely happy with saga until I tried to put another name driver on my policy, and they stated she could drive the car for pleasure purposes but not commuting to and from work, what a joke! These people live in the past, the reason that most of us are driving is to get ourselves to work and back .the only advice I can give to saga is -get rid of your dinosaur policy makers and try and move forward into the 20th century.needless to say I will never take car insurance with them again and will encourage every one I know to do the same!

“Brilliant from start to finish.”

★★★★★

written by 306Gibson on 24/12/2015

After my car was vandalised in an attempt to steal it, Saga dealt with my claim brilliantly from start to finish. They arranged to have the car collected and subsequently delivered to a different address. Although the car was written off for insurance purposes, I was able to repair the damage easily. The car is now back on the road and exactly as was, and Saga paid out the agreed sum immediately. I couldn't fault their service, and all the staff I spoke to were British and both courteous and polite.

“trading on favourable treatment for the over 50s”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 1953Byrne on 03/12/2015

They are time wasters, and I do not trust their publicity. Their quote for car insurance was more expensive than Aviva, and LV, which cannot be said to be the cheapest. This also applied to their home insurance quote. Saga would have you believe that they are Ideal for those of us over 50. This may have been so in the past, but it doesn't seem to be so now. I think they are trading on a myth hoping to persuade "the elderly" of favourable treatment. I shall not bother to have anything to do with them again, and shall shred any further letters I get from them.

“No problems at all”

★★★★★

written by davidsuffolk on 01/11/2015

I see that there are quite a few very negative reviews for Saga which I suspect is because more people will write when they are aggrieved than when happy? My own experience was excellent. My wife had a collision in early September and when we made the claim it was all dealt with over the phone. I was referred to a local repairer who duly contacted me later the same day to arrange collection and a loaned car. Some few days after that the car was declared uneconomical to repair and after about another week I was contacted by the assessors who agreed a value at what Autotrader had similar cars offered for sale. A cheque duly arrived soon after. I did expect that our renewal cost would be much higher, as the claim was our fault, but apart from a slight increase in excess it was broadly similar. In summary, Saga dealt with our claim professionally and quickly so, in my case anyway, they were first class.

“NEVER, EVER BUY INSURANCE FROM SAGA SELECT”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Penelope55 on 28/09/2015

Having insured my van on 8th August, Saga Select wrote to me SEVEN weeks later asking for a huge number of documents to be sent to them - driving licences, log book, counterparts etc. They gave me 14 days to send it before cancelling my insurance, but as they had sent their letter 2nd class the previous week, they had used up 6 of the 14 days themselves. They gave me a tiny 2nd class envelope to send it all back in. I rang and they refused to send me a sensible sized envelope or extend the time. I had to argue for an hour before they said they'd send me one - but they didn't actually send it anyway. Counterpart driving licences were abolished in June 15, and when I pointed this out, they said they still wanted them. I gathered all the documents together and sent them in time for the date, but they rang BEFORE they received them to tell me that they had decided not to continue with the insurance anyway. Sending the documents was a complete waste of time and money and effort. I cancelled the insurance as I would rather disembowel myself with a spoon than have anything more to do with them. They said they'd refund the insurance and pretended the refund would be pro rata. However, the figure they gave me was not pro rata (I calculated it myself) because they weren't returning the extra I had paid for personal accident. They sold me this add on when I renewed the insurance - I didn't ask for it and I had not claimed on it. They had also decided to keep some of my money for no real reason at all. More arguing - and they refunded it pro rata. If I had not worked it out myself, they would have swindled me out of my money. Total incompetence.

Saga provide unlimited European use on their car insurance which is the main reason I use them. Has anyone any experience of them being difficult about cars parked at secure airport car parks abroad? I am in France and flying back to UK for a couple of weeks to see the kids, leaving the car at Toulouse airport. Have read the policy and it looks OK but the circumstances are unusual perhaps. Grateful for views.
