“Baxi Combi 133 HE Plus - absolute nightmare”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/01/2013

We had a Baxi Combi 133 HE Plus fitted just over 4 years ago by a Corgi Registered Plumber (ex British Gas employee). We have had nothing but trouble with it. It was 4 weeks out of Guarantee when we were getting loud banging noises when it fired up. Had to have burner replaced costing nearly £300 incl labour. Sent old burner off to Baxi but got no joy from them. After a few months the banging started again. Several visits from plumber did not fix the problem. Joined British Gas scheme and have now had to have the burner replaced again. Still getting banging noise, which is very loud and the neighbours are complaining. Have had B Gas back again last week, he checked it again and said see how it goes. It is still happening and is quite scary at night when all is quiet. Surely this must be a design fault. We have the heating on timer and just leave it to get on with it, so how can it be something we are doing? I am thinking of getting on to Trading Standards as I think the Boiler is not fit for purpose.

The boiler is very bad and customer service is even worse. I have waited 2 hours to speak to technical service and there was no response.

“Baxi 100 HE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bloke_in_Norwich on 12/04/2012

Quite the WORST product I have EVER bought of any sort in my entire 50 years of life. Totally unreliable from the start and has been repaired 1 to 4 times a year EVERY year since we had it installed 9 years ago. I honestly believe every single component has been replaced at least once and some bits three times. I have now given up and am replacing it with the vow to NEVER BUY a BAXI POTTERTON again in my life. Really, I would NEVER recommend this product, I would recommend try ANYTHING else because my experience was that I could only have made a worse purchase if there had been an explosion - which thankfully never happened !

“Baxi - Don't toutch them”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 06/04/2012

We have a 3 year old HE A. Its broken down to the point it trips the fuse board out plumber couldn't fix it so after parting with over £300 (for would could turn out to be a £50 fault) they turned up. To be fair they were prompt - I now think this is because nobody uses them. They wouldn't go in our loft because the ladder wasn't fixed (even though it's fully boarded). So their boilers don't work and neigher does their aftercare service. Mark, Berkshire

My Baxi 133EH Plus Boiler was great for abit then broke down, Everything from the Burner to Over Heat Stats have been replaced and now Seals have had to be replaced and all the previous parts that the Plumber as replaced. I have had no Heating for weeks and the Plumber is at my house on a twice weekly basis. The Housing Association House in which i live think Baxi are the best Boilers and keep telling the plumbers to replace parts and not the whole boiler system. How can having No Hot Water and Heating be good and what about the Health and Safety implications ?. I wouldnt reccomend Baxi to anyone but the Housing Associations decide whats happening and not myself. A few weeks ago the Plumber had to wait a number of weeks for all the Spare Parts to arrive and the boiler was in bits in my kitchen. How can this be could when you have small children in the house and everybodys cold and made up with the Flu ???????.

i have had nothing but problems with my potterton kingfisher cfl100. have had to replace 3 pcb's and now potterton will not work on the boiler as they say the problems are caused by the installer.
Trying to choose a reliable boiler is a nightmare. have been recommended worcester bosch and vaillant by some installers but still find lots of bad feed back on the internet even for these makes.

written by on 25/02/2011

I bought a new flat from Bellway in January 2009. The Baxi Combi Promax boiler installed there has been nothing but trouble. It broke down in the first year due to low pressure and needed a new printed circuit board. It broke down again in December 2010 and needed a new circuit board, gas electrode and other parts. It was only 'kept going' until the end of the warranty period (January 31 2011) and still doesn't work. Bellway has refused to accept responsibilty because the warranty period has expired. Surely they are in breach of contract because the brand new boiler sold with the property has never been fit for purpose or working satisfactorily. Can anyone tell me whether Bellway (and Baxi) is in breach of the Sale of Goods Act? Any advice would be most welcome. I would give zero stars if I could but it's not possible with this review.

Thanks

Read the 1982 sale and supply of goods act, easy translation on line. Then join Which and get their legal advice, excellent. Check out the warranty clause in the Act and you will realise that there is a lot you can claim for esp from Bellway.

I have had a Baxi Potterton 100/2 HE Plus for c. 3 years. This boiler worked well for 6 months, subsequently it has broken down on a regular basis - and despite replacing all the electronics has never functioned reliably for more than a few months at a time. We are going to write off the £2,000 odd we spent on this boiler and buy a reliable one from a different manufacturer. I strongly recommend NEVER buying one of these.

written by on 05/04/2010

I would give this boiler zero stars on all counts, but had to put one star because that's a mandatory field.

It has been a complete disaster since installed, seldom a month goes by that it doesn't break down, and although it is covered by a British Gas service contract, it usually takes several visits to put right. During the coldest winter in history it totally let my 75 year-old mother down and was out of action for 6 weeks continuously. This is unacceptable.

All in all, it has been a sorry tale of mystery problems, unidentified cause, unavailable parts etc etc. Practically every component has been changed but it's as unreliable as ever. It can only be a rubbish boiler. It sucks - wish we'd bought a Worcester/Bosch. I didn't imagine anything so useless could still be made.

Do not be tempted by cheap initial cost, it's total scrap. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

written by on 11/03/2010

We had 2 new BAXI boilers installed in our home in October 2005 - BAXI 100/2 HE and BAXI 80 HE. Both have been nothing bu trouble in the last 18 months despite regular servicing. Since September 2008 we have spent £1500 having them repaired - seals, PCBs, gas valves, electrodes, motorised valves and now the heat exchageer on the 100 HE is cracked, leaked, affected the electrics and we need a new boiler. BAXI/Potterton used to have a good name, but I am informed by plumbers and heating engineers that they make more on spares than boiler sales so have no vested interest in improving their product. I would not recommend them to anyone.

“I have a Baxi/Potterton Suprima 80HE, which as...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by BazzaReviewer on 16/02/2010

I have a Baxi/Potterton Suprima 80HE, which as installed 2-3 years ago and it constantly needs electrical components. This winter when we had -16C temperatures the flue (through the roof) became iced up and ice dropped down the flue and broke the fan. We were then without heating for 10 days. Scottish Hydro who I have a service contract with, said that they were having difficulty obtaining a replacement fan as there usual supplier was sold out. I managed to find one via the internet but also found out that there had been a massive run on fans during this cold spell. This is no doubt because condensing boilers produce lots of water vapour but because little heat goes up the flue, it turns to ice in very cold weather. This ice can cause a blockage or fall down and destroy the fan.

I suspect this problem is not limited to Baxi/Potterton but may well be experienced in other makes. The fact that the flue is partly made up of non-heat conducting materials probably makes this issue worse. I contacted Baxi but they said this was the first they had heard of it which is strange, as I found others on the internet who had experienced the same problem together with masses of people who had experienced the freezing condensate pipe problem, which is far more obvious. Baxi could not offer a solution and only said that this should not happen. As a research engineer, I would say that putting out lots of water vapour up a cool pipe into -16C temperatures and not taking ice formation into account is somewhat irresponsible! If your fan failed over this period and you have a verticle flue, then I suspect that this might well have been because of ice formation.
After my boiler failed due to the fan failing, I went up ont the snowy roof. When I removed the external icicles from my flue and then lifted out the top section of the flue pipe, I could see the ice build up internally and some fell down the flue, as if to prove my point. I think the only solution is to lag the flue pipe and possibly heat it with a cable heater connected to an external thermostat. Baxi of course said that this should not be necessary!

“Potterton Promax 15/2 HE Plus”

★☆☆☆☆

written by thisandmatt on 08/01/2009

Potterton Promax 15/2 HE Plus

My boiler (model above) is just under 13 months old and won't light. Squeaking, clicking and explosive ignition, then locks out and needs reset. Fortunately I have the additional 3 months "free" warranty that was offered if I registered.

Their info says to call my installer before contacting them, so I did. Called him on Tuesday evening and he came Wednesday evening. It is a problem with the boiler so I called Potterton on Thursday at about 08:45. Gosh what a bright, friendly, helpful person I spoke to (sarcasm)!

Firstly I was surprised that despite registering my details didn't seem to be in their system so I went through it all. Yes, they'd come out..... on Monday!! That's four days with no heating or hot water plus the day because I waited for my installer first! Not what I'd call good, or even average service.

My advice - contact them straight away, forget waiting for the installer and make sure you get as much warranty as you can because they seem to last just over a year then get expensive!

Funny, my old boiler lasted 25 years!

written by 59mayflower on 29/09/2008

Potteron ProMax HE 30. Boiler installed April 2007. First Failure June 2008. Forced to pay GBP 200 call out to replace a faulty electronic component which failed again 3 months later. Response from Baxi "we can offer a 20% discount on a new boiler if you order one today.

Incredibly poor customer service from the recommended installer from Baxi and from Domestic and General with whom we have taken out a annual maintenace.

The thing is noisy and erratic. Should have kept the one that we had before. Even though it was 20 years old, it never failed.

written by Ian Metcalfe on 12/08/2008

We installed it on the basis of having had four reliable Potterton boilers previously, so how can a competent company like this now turn out such trash? It failed six months after installation, then again after fifteen months, we have since spent in the order of £500 on it and it still doesn't work at all: permanent lock out. The new boiler was only £800! As for the service how can they justify £299 for a call out when it could only be a loose wire: arrogance beyond belief.

We had british gas fit a Baxi Potterton promax boiler last year,it worked ok for about 6 months then the boiler would fire and stop after a few seconds, because we had a service contract with british gas they replaced circuit boards on 4 separate occasions and it still didn't work, they then sent potterton engineers around to try and solve the problem, they were as poor as british gas engineers, eventually every part of the boiler was replaced over a two month period and its working ok now. To sum it up rubbish boiler, poor service.

We are now having to pay to have ours moved as Baxi/Potterton after sales service is atrocious ! They just don't want to know anything about problems and are a nightmare to deal with.We have had 4 Baxi boilers to date and never had a problem but the current system boilers are like the customer service, Just not up to the job !

Since installation of our Baxi Potterton in sept 2007 an engineer has had to be called out on 7 occassions. The boiler is unreliable and continuously fails to start up. British gas & Potterton seem incapable of solving the problem. Customer service from both companies is poor.
