    “The Motorola V600 is my second phone from Motorola,...”

    ★★★★★

    written by KriegeR on 14/04/2004

    The Motorola V600 is my second phone from Motorola, having owned the V66 in the past. The V600 carries on in the ever-successful clamshell design, (or flip-fone as some people like to call them), and it oozes with its sleek and stylish design. Incidentally, I moved to this phone from a Nokia 6610, which says a lot for them, however.

    On the outside the most striking feature is the phone's all-metal design. The facias are metal as opposed to the more tradition plastic used in many other phones. All of the external features, (such as the charging port, antenna, buttons, speaker grilles etc), are all well built into the design in a stylish fashion, which many people would desire. The phone features a small blue-backlit LCD screen on the outside for at-a-glance information about callers and messages. The phone also features so-called "Mood Lights" around the Motorola icon. These can be programmed to flash different colours according to who is ringing, or what the phone is doing, (when the Bluetooth is active, the mood lights pulse blue from time to time). However I can only see this feature as a battery waster.

    On the inside of the phone, the keys are pleasantly large, as opposed to some of the more modern mobiles, where a pin is needed to press each key. The keys are nicely laid out, and interact well with the display. My only issue with the keyboard of the phone is that when the phone is closed, the keys gently touch the screen. This does not cause any damage, but it transfers grease from the keys, (which builds up through use), to the screen. This means that when used in bright light, you sometimes have to clean the screen in order to be able to see.

    The operating system of the phone is packed full of features, but the navigation could do with some work. Having 4 to 5 keys to navigate with can become confusing, and I believe this is where the modern Nokias excel. That said, the Motorola features a much more advanced predictive text input system, and the web facilities are much more advanced. All of these features are displayed on a nice, bright, large LCD screen, although not as large as some of the more recent phones like the Sharp GX-30.

    Battery life on the phone is quite good for a clamshell design, which seem to have suffered from negative publicity with regards batteries. I am a casual user, (2 or 3 times a day, and about 5 texts), and the phone will easily last up to 1.5 weeks on a single charge. This battery life quickly drops with features like Bluetooth enabled.

    The camera is adequate as far as standards go, and will produce reasonable shots with ease. The pictures are generally very clear and reasonably sharp. However if image capture is important to you, then the Sharp GX-30 is probably more up your street. The V600 will get you by for the odd snap or two, and it is certainly better than some of the previous clamshell picture phones.

    All in all, this phone is one of the best clamshells I have seen yet. It defies the usually expectations in looks and practicality, and excels where most others leave off. My only major gripe is that cases for the phone are extremely hard to come by, especially the ones that let you utilise the phone 100% whilst it is in the case. Out of the 3 cases I found, all of them obstructed the camera when the phone was in the open position, which is clearly not desirable. However considering I was going to purchase the new Nokia flip-fone, I think choosing the Motorola was the best choice I could have made.

    “After many hours changing my mind on which mobile...”

    written by MOTOCONVERT on 13/04/2004

    After many hours changing my mind on which mobile phone to get, I finally decided on the Motorola V600. I had a Nokia 6610 before and wanted a clamshell so I wouldn't keep dialling numbers because I forgot to lock the keypad. My 7th and best phone! Much improved on my old moto brick 6 years ago. Loads of features, probably more than you ever need to use and if you have a function you need often, you can customize the menu and use it at the touch of a button. The iTap text input took a couple of attempts to get used to but I find it much better and intuitive than T9. Good camera that works better than my mates T610 in dimly lit club areas despite no flash. I highly recommend this phone and my brother would have loved one but he had bought the Panasonic X70 a few days before (sucker) and can't return it. You can put it into silent when it's in your pocket but it's not that easy to do by accident. Make sure you get a Bluetooth headset with it, I got a great Motorola one free in the box at Phones4u but other shops were offering rubbish ones at extra cost or none at all. Style would get 10/10 if there weren't an ariel.

    I have had this Motorola V600 mobile phone for about 1 month now, and i cant see why anyone would not like this phone. It has all the features which i would want a phone to have, its design is nice sleek and very classy. The camera quality can be adjusted dependent on what type of picture you want.

The reception Is exellant far out performs my old phone, battery life is good cant fault it at all

    I have had three mobile phones in the last two years and this Motorola V600 comes at the bottom of the list, it's very hard to find any good points, don't waste your money, if you're still not convinced then find some poor sucker who's got one and ask them

    I've owned a Nokia 7210 and a Motorola Talkabout, my comments are made mainly at this phones useability, with a poor battery life and vunerable switches that turn the phone to silent in your pocket, it doesn't do much for the ability to "stay in touch"

    “This Motorola V600 possibly has to be one of THE best...”

    ★★★★★

    written by rabbhiyahiya on 06/03/2004

    This Motorola V600 possibly has to be one of THE best 'mobile phones I have ever owned (& i've had a lot!) but, have never used a motorala before so this is fairly new to me. The attractive clamshell design keeps the phone small and discreet. It has an external blue Display screen to show important stats and caller Id. When you open the phone it has a surpirisngly huge 64K colour screen that seems to be one of the best on the market (at this time). The buttons and placing of them is easy, unobtrusive and comfortable to use. For such a small phone it packs a huge punch. It has all the features of a mobile such as the expensive PDA fones (i.e. POP3 Email client, MMS, Bluetooth, even instant messaging via. Msn or ICQ etc). Synching it with a pc/laptop via bluetooth is a breeze and easily done.

    The media features are superb. It has a very high quality camera with many adjustable options (4X zoom, exposure, quality etc) and is surpassed only in my opinion by the Nokia 6600 and Sharp Fones. Many interactive features accompany the fone (i.e- Media viewer, Java games, composer etc + loads more) which is now your standard. What makes the phone stand out however is the bility to playback MPEG Video and MP3 files. WIth the fast GPRS access and easy MMS feature this is very fast and efficient and enables you to view the latest sports/news/ and entertainement bits via live streaming. The phone can play polyphonic ringtones and short Mp3 files whcih is a plus. To supplemnt all these features the phone contains a large 5MB storage capacity which is more than enough for most people.

    The phone has many special features that only motorola would dream up such as assigning a different "event light" (as they call it) to speciifc people and functions. This means you can assign different colours to categories of people (such as familiy) so that when they call the external shell glows that colour! The phone uses this light whilst charging, blueetooth etc aswell and is a very pleasant function to see in operation. The phone has attractive removable metal covers to change the look. The metal material of the cover as well as the clamshell design makes it feel quite bulky in compariosn to other phones yet reassuringly robust and secure.

    The battery life is v.good... u can get a few days life out of it with bluetooth on and a decent amount of calls being made. I left it on standby for nearly a week without charge.

    Other features include a detailed calendar utility, alarm, voice recorder, calculator etc and your standard call/phone functions (i.e- call register etc).

    Reception is OK... sometimes the signal strength is not great (and its not a network problem) as i have noticed but it is not overly annoying as its a rare occurance and seems to happen only in the first minute or so of the phone powering up.

    A few negatives i picked up on: - In the phone book you cant search extensively for a specific name (i.e type in "Sam" for example) it will only let you type the "S" or initial letter and then scroll through from there.... This is very annoying, especially if u have a large quantity of numbers stored! It becomes tiresome and tedious to keep pressing through all of them.

    No iRDA... annoying if you like the ease of transfering between phones with no bluetooth or advanced functions.

    Menu and user interface takes a while to get used to. It is fairly complex...for most people (especially nokia users) it may take a while to get used to (like me!)

    Message storage is limted to the SIM capacity (usually around 15- 40) as the phone does not allocate any of its HUGE 5MB(!) storage to SMS!!! I find this very ridiculous.

    Apart from these very minor niggles the phone is near perfect in terms of design and functionality. I very much recommend it, being slightly sceptical of Motorola phones at first this mobile has transformed my opinion of the brand. The phone has a perfect blend of fashion/design and function and reliability.

    Has anyone noticed (and this one is probably for the girls!) that when the phone is bouncing around in your bag, the status of the ring style (ie. silent / ring / loud / vibe etc) keeps changing? I am constatntly missing calls because no-one can tell me how to lock out the keys on the side of the phone that are responsible for changing the ring style / type. Maybe you can't lock these keys but apart from this MAJOR failing, this phone has generally been pretty good. The only other problem I've experienced is the poor battery life. Comments please.

    Noticed that some one has had a problem with the 'Bluetooth Module not attached'. Has anyone managed to solve this problem. I am really desparate to get this sorted. Tried calling Motorola helpline, but it seems the phone headsets are glued into to their music system or probably they are testing the "SILENT" mode on their phones.

    I've had the V600 for a week now and I have nothing but good things to say about it. Having moved from a Nokia I agree that the interface takes a while to get used to but quite fun learning to use. The ring tone volume can be cranked up to a good useable level which can be heard in a busy street unlike the Nokia where I had to rely on the vibe in a noisy environment. Just one tip - if you intend to use USB to connect to your PC, don't spend £40+ on a high street cable set, I picked one up on ebay for £10 incl. postage.

    Hi At the moment I use a samsung v200 and am thinking of changing it to the moto v600. I used to have a V66e which I didn't like the predictive texting method. Do you know if the 600 has the same or more like the Nokia and Samsung versions? The phone also states it is a quadband, will this help at all in America? Any help on this would be great, thanks.

    Hi,
    <br>Hoping you might be able to help me - I'm trying to choose between the V600/V500 (practically the same phone), the Sony Ericsson Z600, and the Samsung E700.
    <br>
    <br>I've tried out the V600 and Z600, but the shop yesterday didn't have an active E700 for me to use (though a few of my friends have one so I'll play with theirs.
    <br>
    <br>I've sort of been edging towards the V600/V500 since it seems like a good compromise between the Z600 and E700, in that it has a good amount of memory (5MB I believe, compared to Z600 with 2MB, and E700 with 9MB), a decent camera (better than the Z, not quite as good as the E), as well as some other cool features like voice commands and video playback.
    <br>
    <br>But, there are a few things stopping me from immediately choosing it. Firstly, the external antenna - doesn't bother me too much, but both the Z and the E have internal ones.
    <br>
    <br>Secondly, the SMS memory limitation - I believe it only stores text messages on the SIM card(about 20 in total)? How have you found this to be? I send a recieve a fair number of messages and like to keep a lot of them for viewing later, which is why that limitation is worrying me.
    <br>
    <br>Are there any other limitations or anything else I should perhaps know?
    <br>
    <br>Thanks a lot for any help!

    At the moment only ICQ use is possible. I am aware that as MSN Are updating their mobile services many mobiles including the V600 will be able to access MSN through their mobile. However t-mobile and some other UK networks have not yet "adapted" or implemented these updates as they have told me and it is in the pipeline. I think more info can be found on mobile.msn.com where you follow the steps. At current I'm still using ICQ messenger on the fone but am still waiting for t-mob to contact me when they do the update.

    “After all the hype...was the Motorola V600 worth the...”

    ★★★★☆

    written by scarborian on 19/02/2004

    After all the hype...was the Motorola V600 worth the wait? For me, no! Don't get me wrong, there is nothing really wrong with this mobile phone. Its just that I've reviewed (and still own) a V300 and the superb V500, so when it came round to trying this latest and much anticipated offering form Motorola I must confess to being a little disappointed.
    The styling is more retro than the afore mentioned models and reminds me of the V60i with its removable front style covers and metal back plate. I prefer the look and feel of the V300. That said, the V600 will appeal more to the business buyer who has cash to splash. The phone has chrome hinges and a chrome trim inside of which is the blue backlit single colour LCD display. A fairly small affair but big enough to show the time, signal strength and battery condition. The display also shows the incoming call number or the callers name if its stored in the phones memory. Underneath this display can be found the "ring of colour". A small pulsating ring of light that can be set to a choice of colours and illuminates when using Bluetooth, receiving a text or call, or simply when the phone is on charge! It's very pretty and one for the features most admired by my other half! Motorola are still hanging on to the traditional external aerial which gives the phone a "big" feel but (some say) also improves the signal quality.
    Opening the V600's flip reveals the superb 65K full colour display and the keyboard with 5 way function selector. The keys are arranged in a smooth pattern with no spacing in between. This looks good but made it difficult at times to write text messages. The same problem was found when using the 5 way selector and the soft keys. The keypad on the V500/525 is much better spaced and easier to use. If you've had experience with the current range of Moto's then the user interface will be familier with just about every menu customisable to suit the users needs. I-Tap texting is still used on the V600 and takes a little getting used too after the Nokia T9 system but with a little practice is quite speedy. Don't expect to be able to store lots of your text messages in the V600 though because its memory is still appalling AND that memory meter is still there! What is that all about? Ringtones are polyphonic and the V600 has a good selection, all of which are pretty loud. New ones can of course be downloaded via WAP or Bluetooth. Interestingly, the V600 would not link directly to the V500 using Bluetooth! I had to upload a ringtone from the 500 to my PC before re-loading it into the 600! Using Bluetooth to link up to handsfree headsets proved no problem at all. I tried it with both the Motorola headset and a Jabra Freespeak 250 both of which gave reasonable call quality as long as I stayed within a metre of the phone. The 10 metre range thing is definately on the optimistic side when using Bluetooth on most phones. This handset doesn't have any infra-red port so if you want to connect it to your PC it's Bluetooth or go out and buy a PC lead. Shame! If you're into gaming then the V600 games are Stuntman and Monopoly but I don't play games on my mobile so can't comment.
    The V600's on board camera gave a quite creditable performance (equally as good as the current Samsungs) and has the same 4x zoom as found on the other Moto's. The photo's can be sent as MMS messages or assigned to a callers phone book entry and viewed as you open the phone. A feature I find a bit odd on a flip phone!
    The V600 can also playback (but not record) short video's! Again a feature for which I can't see a need. Am I missing something? If you intend travelling the world with your V600 then the good news (apparently) is that the phone is Quad Band and so should work in the deepest rainforest. But then again so is the V500/525! In use the V600 is a nice phone and the call quality if a little muffled is ok with the battery giving around 4 days standby with average use.
    So we come back to the question, was it worth all the hype? Some of these phones made as a special edition for Aston Martin are changing hands for around £1000 on e-bay! Most retailers will still tell you (at time of writing) that the V600 is just not available yet and so the rarity value makes this handset much sought after. So, if you really need a pulsating light and customisable front covers then the V600 is the phone for you. If not then save yourself some hard earned and go for the V500/525. It has nearly all the same features, (except the light and covers) but has a better keypad and in my opinion looks a lot better!

    Splimpy you've just saved my life! I was getting really annoyed with the amount of text messages i could hold on my V600! Started off on 20 and for some unknown reason it has gone down to 7! Even with drafts, outbox and MMS folders empty! I've downloaded a few 'Real' Tones from Vodafone. These are the mp3 ringtones which play the official song! Thats really good! The other thing is my battery power is shockingly poor! I'll have to purchase another battery to see if it does the same! If your in a middle of typing a text message and the phone looses service. It decides to display a white screen for about 5 seconds and then comes back stating no service. The text message you were currently writing occasionally saves into drafts. Otherwise you'll have to type it all again! Apart from these, i really like the phone!

    I was able to send ringtones directly between my V600 and another V600 using Bluetooth just fine. Try Multimedia - Sounds - Menu - Copy. Same works for pictures, phonebook, etc.

    I've just got a V600 myself, I'm afraid this review is wrong in one respect; the text storage is limited to a maximum of 99 texts which can be stored on the phone, not just on the sim (Msg setup menu -> message setup -> auto cleanup -> can be set to a max of 99). This phone is fantastic in most respects. The only problem I have is that you don't get software you can connect to your pc with via bluetooth. You have to buy a cable & software seperately. As for value for money, you get a free bluetooth headset included, worth £99 last time I checked! Not a bad phone at all. To improve it you'd need a hot pluggable sd card slot, stereo mp3 playback and bluetooth synchronization software included.

    V600 up-date...
    <br>I still have the phone and so far all is well with it. Re the question by \"brownie\" about using the V600 and texting. I think a Nokia user will find any Motorola a little harder to use because of Nokia\'s superb user interface but the V600 is easy enough given a little time. One of my original gripes about the handset was its poor text storage capacity and that still is a bit of a problem. The 600 holds 20 texts in the sim before you have to start housekeeping! Given that the V600 can play back video etc (a feature which still leaves me cold!) I would have thought that using some of the phones memory to store more texts would have been much more useful.
    <br>That aside the V600 is still a very good (if a little over rated) phone and I still stand by my comments in the review that the V500/525 is probably a better buy..if you can find one!

    Very good review!! I am thinking of getting one, but people say its hard to use? (i\'m used to nokia) was wondering how many texts can V600 store though and are they stored on the phone or the sim card?!

    “Having bought the Motorola V600 ( I'd waited for it...”

    ★★☆☆☆

    written by andiaugust on 10/02/2004

    Having bought the Motorola V600 ( I'd waited for it for months), I charged it as advised and made a few calls in the 3 days it lived.Most things responded reasonably but I found the reception worse than poor, for about half the length of a call it appeared to be coming from the inside of a welly. After 3 days the set just gave up the ghost, the will to live had gone.( O2 the supplier), has promised a replacement set. Nothing untoward happened to the phone, it simply just switched off having drawn its last breath.

    hmm, out of interest where did u get it from?
    <br>you say your waiting for o2 to replace it so did u buy it through 02 or there online store. the reason i ask is that different people would be responsible for the replacement which whould be worked out by where you got it from and when.
    <br>eg- first 28 days then it would be the store then after that it would be most likely to be sent off to a motorola service centre.

    It has been available on O2 (when in stock), since early January. I did not imagine the deal and I still have the duff set awaiting the replacement.
