Pets at Home: I entered the Hamilton store to buy a small pet for my niece. I asked the first member of staff I saw and she directed me to to the hamster cages. She asked what I had in mind and I told her that I was thinking about a hamster. The girl recommended a pair of gerbils instead. When I asked why she told me that they were less likely to bite and that they didn't sleep all day and they do not stay awake at night like hamsters, and that they were more friendly. I asked about cages and… Read Full Review

Written on: 12/11/2004 by dee davies (1 review written)

I was sold a female rat that seemed to be over weight, when questioned staff as to whether it was pregnant they advised it was not. Three days after purchase I now have 6 babies! My compensation? A free bag of food. They are not able to eat this so what is its use… Read Full Review

The staff generally at Pets At Home are in no way untrained as not only does the company have a training programme which all employee's must complete but they often have their own personal knowledge on several animals and many have animal care training. Although the members of staff that served you made a mistake it is completely unfair to promote the opinion that all of the staff are untrained. As for the comment about the conditions that the animals are kept in, they are obviously not as bad as you describe otherwise the shop would not hold a license to sell pets.

In response to gingerfuzzball, obviously you have a point with your comment but were you aware that Pets At Home don't guarrantee the sex of any animals that they sell, i think any sensible company would be aware of the problems this could cause. I think your complaints should be against any irresponsible members of staff that sell these animals or any customers who DON'T listen to the advice given, not against the company as a whole.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the person who did the original review. In my experience, they are particularly weak on sexing animals and on pregnancy-related issues in general which leaves rescue homes flooded with unwanted pets. I must agree with the person that left the first comment. I personally know that all staff are made to undergo a rigorous training scheme and i would fully trust the judgement of my Local Pets at Home staff.

<br>Conditions in all the Pets at Home stores that i have been in, and i must say ive been in a fair few, have been in excelent condition. Food is given in a morning so it is possible that they had eaten it by the time you vistited, however fresh vegetables are often seen in the pens and averies where i visit.

Several times I have had to inform staff at Pets at Home of sick, dead or dying fish. A couple of months ago I swore I wouldn't go back there but because I live so close to them, I went back on my word and popped in recently to buy a few bits for my fish. Yet again, I saw sick, dead and dying fish and unclean tanks. One show tank with a couple of fish in had obviously been forgotten about as their glass was thick with green algae and water cloudy because their pump wasn't working and it would… Read Full Review

you seem to have had a poor experience in the gravesend branch of pets at home but i can assure you it is not like that every where. Pets at home have a number of standards in place which every store MUST abide by. However, in every branch there are thousands of fish, so you cannot expect every single one to be healthy, just as you shouldnt be alarmed to see 1 or 2 dead fish, as 1 or 2 out of thousands is not bad. However, tanks should be kept clean and algae free.

“I bought a rat from Pets at Home three years ago. ...”

Written on: 27/02/2004 by Doreen Howard (3 reviews written)

I bought a rat from Pets at Home three years ago. Although he looked healthy when bought, within a month he was poorly with a lung problem prevalent in rats. Although the shop say they will take back unhealthy animals after a month we were too attached to send him back to his death. We spent the next two and a half years nursing him and making very costly trips to the vet for antibiotics. This disease is well known and I feel that the shop did not screen their suppliers and the parent rats… Read Full Review

i totally disagree with your comment about the staff being not trained.. i think you have just been unlucky with the staff you encountered.. i think its a shame to point the finger at all the staff that works at pets at home and say they dont know anything about the animals they are selling.. otherwise why would they be working there?!
