“Can't Purchase Shares”

★★☆☆☆

written by GeoffGrump on 30/07/2015

We have 2 ISA accounts , both have cash available but can't buy shares as cash is on both shown as 0. I guess all accounts are stuck. I have sent them secure email but will be surprised if they respond I finally decided to write review as previously it took 12 weeks to transfer funds into Selftrade from another ISA. After 6 weeks wait they told me they had asked for funds so I believed hem, I phoned the supplier no record. Selftrade insisted they had. Finally they admitted they hadn't, and resubmitted. So 12 weeks later the funds appeared, no notification that they had completed and no apology.

Well got a really nice reply from Selftrade , now can trade, not sure but it may have been my fault as it appears that I was in Dealing Account not ISA.

“Diabolical service from Selftrade / Equiniti”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 451George on 21/07/2015

I Have been with Selftrade for many years but since being taken over by Equiniti all aspects of the service has been diabolical. I have now started the process of transferring my shares to a different stock broker but even this is taking an excessive amount of time due to Selftrade/Equiniti. From Equiniti taking over you have 1 year to transfer free of any charges. I would advise all to seriously consider transferring your shares now before you encounter charges from this dis-functional company. Their failures have cost me money so I for one would never consider being a customer of this company ever again.

Still trying to get tax certificate for 2014-15 three months on. Cannot trade limit orders as was possible in old Selftrade days. Letter to MD goes unanswered. This company ought to be suspended by regulators.

“Terrible, terrible service and website”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 482Harvey on 29/05/2015

This company is just not fit for purpose. Everything is a total headache, they lose documents, the website is just terrible. I was applying for a mortgage and they don't even have a function to print a statement of account with your name on it etc. I had to call them so many times just to get this sent to me and what was sent was just pathetic I am surprised the mortgage company accepted it as proof. AVOID, go with a site like Hargreaves Lansdown instead, MUCH more professional, good website, service etc. Selftrade a compete and total joke. One of the worst companies I have encountered and regret using them

“If I Could Award No Stars I Would”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/04/2015

I was a customer of this company for many years beginning when they were known as Comdirect. I was very happy until this dreadful transfer to Equiniti. I found the dealing platform was painfully slow to load. (In answer to a previous post I believe that they did not use the same platform as Selftrade is that Selftrade did not own the software). I initiated the transfer process to another broker at the beginning of February and it looks like it has finally been completed. Only around 11 weeks! It was painful enough getting the stock transferred with messages going to and fro. Often I had to send more than one message to get a response (which more often than not got the reply of 'We're looking at it' or 'We're waiting for x from the new broker'. Transfer of the cash in the accounts was even more difficult. According to my new broker the money was transferred without any reference so they didn't know which account the monies belonged to. (I can't think of any good reason why my new broker would want to delay the transfer) Terrible company and I'm so pleased that I have now finished my relationship with them.

You were lucky. You got away from Equinity. iWeb sent my request for transfer on 1st May 2015, They got valuation for the dealing account, but Equinity lost the ISA transfer request. A month later iWeb asked me 'do I want this transfer done or not', as they have not heard from Equinity. Equinity lost the paper work, so I asked iWeb to send a certified copy to them, they have yet to receive.
At least Equinity can do two things, forget account maintenance charges, until they finish the transfer and inform via secure post, the progress of my transfer.
This is vital, as I am transferring all four family accounts, and a CTF. It takes them more than two weeks to transfer Cash out of CTF, which should have been done in minutes.

“Completely "lost the plot".”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Riley458 on 13/04/2015

We have been with them for approx 10yrs & have been trying to get paperwork for 4 dividend notifications since Xmas which were never posted but only emailed. I have rang several times, emailed several times & written toCustomer Service Manager, three times. No response. Still no missing paperwork. As it is now more than 90 days it does not show up on our accounts to print a copy. I now get no emails about dividend or corporate actions, only paperwork from Worthing instead of London. The other day my wife was sent 8 duplicates telling her that she had dividend from Barclays all in separate envelopes. She has kept one to file and posted the others back with a note. Agree with most of the other reviews and think by the time they get things sorted there will no customers left. What a shame as I was quite happy until the change over. Am now looking to move as soon as possible.

“Incompetence on a grand and recurring scale”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Dobsonof192 on 13/04/2015

Went through all this KYC hassle with selftrade even though I had been with the original comdirect offering. Fine even though it was intrusive and the requirements changed. They blocked my account and then finally unblocked it. I then went onto the site to take up the ISA allowance. I have an existing ISA with them. They rejected the funds for no apparent reason. I went to another provider to set up an ISA. They told me that the funds in my source account with a 3rd party bank had been blocked. Turns out selftrade had rejected my application AND blocked the funds. Still trying to understand what they have done and how to fix it after 3 calls and 3 emails. Sometimes told it is still a KYC issue (although they themselves gave me access to my account online after providing the required documents) but still no resolution. I asked for a manager to call me. Never happened. SImply incompetent and has got exponentially worse with Equiniti. Avoid these jokers like the plague.

“Not worth even one star”

★☆☆☆☆

written by desafinado on 11/04/2015

The worst company I have ever dealt with. When something goes wrong when trading - which is often - they don't answer secure emails. They now answer the phone fairly quickly - a few months ago you could wait half an hour - but their staff fob you off and almost never return promised calls. I could go into a huge amount of detail about specific problems but won't. They are either totally incompetent or totally indifferent to their customers. Or both. I have an official complaint pending which is going to end up with the Financial Ombudsman. Their website is full of plausible nonsense about how they deal with customers. Don't believe it! Do not do business with them under any circumstances!

“Soooo slow and such bad design”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/04/2015

I've given Selftrade a month or two to bed down following the transfer over to Equinit but I have to say that nothing seems to be getting any better after a terrible start. My main complaint is that the site it TERRIBLY slow so forget about it if you want to trade something quickly because logging in alone can take 3 or 4 minutes. Generally I find that loading a portfolio report takes several attempts and often over a minute. It's even slow at the weekends when no one will be trading. A lot of time you sit there wondering whether anything is happening and then suddenly some extra text appears out of nowhere just when you'd given up hope. The look and feel is awfully basic too: looks like it was designed by a sixth-former with pointy head but no nous. I'm off as soon as I can be and do not recommend it at all.

Thmorris's Comment

I fully endorse your comments. I also thought things might get better after 2 to 3 months but the site speed is still as slow as ever and I still can't read any secure messages or contract notes. I have traded 3 times this year. Each time took 40 mins to complete with the loading time of each screen the reason.

I'm afraid I have now given up and have initiated a transfer to AJ Bell for both ISA and dealing account. I took the precaution of doing a screen capture of the balance in both accounts before doing this. I have also been doing screen captures when trades are complete as I know that I won't be able to read or download the contract note.

If Equiniti don't get a grip on this soon they'll find that they have spent good money for a ready made customer base that subsequently walks out the door due to all the problems. My only concern now is that they'll screw up the transfer process as well.

“Is Selftrade.co.uk the worst?”

★★☆☆☆

written by 82Monaghan on 15/03/2015

Performance of online broker Selftrade.co.uk. Website design and online presence: very poor. To give only 1 example from 12 March 2015 (I can provide evidence with screenshots): 1) I went to Prices & Quotes/ETPs/ETFs to look up some exchange traded funds. Compared the font size of "Prices & Quotes" to the font size of the ETF names. Can you see anything without damaging your eyesight? The font size used for the ETF list is far too small. 2) There I click on the first ETF: Amudi with symbol ALAT. Oh dear, does Amudi even exist, or is the firm called Amundi??? On the right, I then click on Key Investor Information Document: What I get is "access denied". Ok, on a second try, I get through to a pdf titled "Amundi ETF". To be fair: if the access to the key investor information consistently worked, this would indeed be a surprisingly positive feature which deserves some praise. 3) And finally, where is the ISIN number that belongs to such a security? Wouldn't that be useful for investors to easily find? Hargreaves show it. Others too. I couldn't find it here, maybe it's hidden away somewhere. 4) Once you have an investment portfolio, how do you find out about your portfolio's performance? Well, Selftrade's Portfolio overview doesn't show you % gain or loss! No, only absolute values. I searched for long but haven't found any % column yet! Seems, you, the customer, have to grab a calculator and calculate your % profit YOURSELF. 5) Finally: I type into the search box at the top of the web page: Apple (without typing carriage return!). The site then loads information: Next: I click on "Click here for more results for "Apple">>". What I get is an ERROR: Endpoint not found / search/Apple The requested URL was not found on this server. Please make up your own mind regarding attention to detail by trying out the website on your own. This review is based on facts, all screenshots have been saved for evidence.

“Go elsewhere”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Darrell1978 on 27/02/2015

I recently sent a share certificate to Selftrade together with instructions on how to allocate the proceeds. It is now 2 weeks on, and nothing has bee ndone - not even an email ackowledgement of receipt. In spite of phone calls and complaint emails they seem to be incapable of responding. What can you do with a company like this? They have a good platform but where human contact is required they do not cut the mustard. I shall be going elsewhere in future.

“What is happening!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/02/2015

I found the old company pretty decent and certainly communication was good. Now: Challenge one: getting on the site. Challenge 2: having the patience to try and navigate through it (more often failing than otherwise). Challenge 3: Trying to remain civil when I did manage to get hold of someone - who kept assuring me that the problems were being addressed. In summary the site is badly designed and has appaling functionality; communication from the company is effectively zero; I have growing concern about the security of my holding. Probably time to get out - hopefully qickly and easily! Lastly a plea: can anyone recommend a service that works at least as well as the old Selftrade did - or better?

Yes, I have jumped ship and gone to Hargreaves where the dealing costs are cheaper but beware of the £45 annual ISA fee. If you hold Funds I would think again. Surprisingly the transfer of shares went through easily but getting Selftrade to send the cash in our accounts over was much more of a problem! 2 weeks later after numerous chasing e:mails the cash is finally on its way. It is goodbye and good riddance to Selftrade.

and I have touched them. The old site was nothing to recommend, and I was hoping the new site would be an improvement. Unfortunately it's worse far worse. It's ugly, slow, clunky and about 10 years out of date. You no longer get emails informing you of activity on your investments. Not tried to contact them for anything yet so can't comment on ease of contact. My dilemma now is would I trust them to handle a transfer to another broker

Please help.
My elderly dad with dementia has a pile of correspondence from Self trade but has no idea if he ever used them and if he has/had shares. If he has a 19 digit reference number does this mean he was/is a member?. No one from SELF TRADE is replying to my emails. Is it a legitimate company?
Sorry to use this platform but am at a loss to know what to do.

It WAS a bonifide share trading company which sold our accounts to Equiniti in january 2015 and is still trading.
I was with selftrade for 10 years and its predecessor Comdirect
I never had a a 19 digit reference number
You should see on your fathers email a/c emails from selftrade advising him of dividend payments received in his account
The "old " selftrade staff are still at the office in Boathouse in docklands and they may be able to help, they were very helpful in the past

“New Equiniti Platform Terribe”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Newanda on 17/02/2015

Two months late and much worse than the old platform. Spreadsheet downloads of stock prices and positions is cluttered with all sorts of stocks with zero quantities that you have to filter out. Some funds and stocks have wrong pricing and show historic prices from the date of the transfer. I have to look up pricing information on other websites. Contract notes are unreadble. They ignore you when you try and contact them. I am out of here as quick as I can get out

“beyond awful”

★☆☆☆☆

written by paul_singapore on 10/02/2015

This company is truly awful . I have traded with them for years and they used to be relatively decent. Now they are utterly abysmal . They had a records review process which was simply terrible. I live offshore and sent the right documentation yet they locked my account. You ring their customer services up and are put on hold for 30 mins then get some rude idiot who does not want to help and ends up getting stroppy (this happened at least 4 times to me) . They do not respond to emails. My account was unlocked for two days and then was locked again for no reason so more phone calls to them. They also told me I had an incorrect US tax form but only informed me a few days before expiry and threatened to auto sell all my US stock . they do not send direct emails and do not call. they have cost me hours and hours of time and almost cost me a huge amount of money by auto selling positions. Added to that their new platform simply does not work properly - it is slow and also intermittent in taking you to the right information and far less intuitive than before. this company should not be allowed to operate in the way they are and I am trying to move my funds elsewhere . in short I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. stay well clear of them unless you enjoy hassle, rudeness, bureaucracy and utterly terrible service

“Selftrade Transfer Shambles”

★☆☆☆☆

written by KymaniBroussard400 on 06/02/2015

Selftrade and their new owners Equiniti did not have a clue when I called them on the first day post transfer when I could not log in to my accounts. The best advise they could give was to call back in a few days!! The Platform they have built is dire and at least 2 months late. Clearly the mupppets at Equiniti have not tested the Platform properly; you need a magnifying glass to read anything you print out!! About the only thing Equiniti are doing right is to keep apologising for the service issues and promising these will be fixed. I've already had enough so am transferring accounts out to a proper broker and would recommend you follow me. I just worry about how look this will take to achieve!

Generally, I like to give constructive feed back rather than kick a company when its down, but I have to say that the criticism in the above is fair. Post transfer, the major issue seems to be the speed of the site, which is extremely slow. In addition to this it is not possible to read messages with attached pdf documents. I haven't tried to execute a deal yet but given the time it takes to get from one page to the next I think it would take a good couple of hours. I'm going to stick with it for a few weeks to see if they can improve things. I can't understand why they didn't just but the website with the customer base

“Selftrade migration to Equitini”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Owensne64 on 03/02/2015

The transfer of Selftrade business to Equitini is an ongoing nightmare: 2 months late, ferocious access problems, & bank transfers in/out of clients' own bank a/c blocked. How bad can this get? Equitini give no assurances on fees beyond a year's grace: they have ISA fees (.5% pa to a max of £75+VAT I think). C Grist
