written by Anuens on 23/07/2006

I had the Motorola E365 mobile phone for a long time. It's not bad value, sturdy, it works, and you can have fun with the the built-in camera (and transfer pictures too), but the response is slow, and it is generally out of date with newer, faster, more customisable, better looking mobiles.

Motorola must be kicking themselves after making the E365. It is truly the worst mobile phone that I have ever owned.

Not only is the screen quality bad, but the features are stingy, and the camera is nothing to shout about. The battery life is poor, and I have had over 10 different problems with it.

The Motorola E365 mobile phone was a big let down. Numerous problems were encountered with the phone. It was a terrible battery saver, and the camera was terrible! The good points however, were that the screen was simple and easy to use.

written by aidy on 05/03/2005

I got this phone for my birthday and I loved it. It's a good phone for someone who is getting their first phone (which was me at the time) but honestly I would look at something a little bit more advanced. Infrared is a huge feature on a phone and you would have to be crazy not to by a phone without it. Other phones like the SAGEM MYV55 or the Sony Ericsson T610 and T630 are a little bit for advanced and you can tape songs off the net and set them as your ringtone. They are the same price but as I know many people are choosing their phones between the Motorola E365 and Nokia 3200, don't buy either of them because I have the Motorola and my brother has the Nokia and there both poor. The only advice is write down what you want in a phone and then search reviews and work out which phone is the right one for you.

“Positive aspects: ”

★★★☆☆

written by Reaction on 07/12/2004

Positive aspects:
The main reason I bought this phone was for it's size - it really is small, and a lot easier to keep in a pocket than many of the clamshell designs. It's a very 'professional' looking phone, and not overdesigned with curves and wacky shaped buttons like many mobiles. It has a very nice, bright, screen, and everything is very readable.

Negative aspects:
The buttons are too small for regular use, and their clicking seems a bit cheap sometimes. The phone's software is bloated with stupid extras like wacky, meaningless, Japanese-style games, horrible ring tones, and too many unnecessary multi-level customization options. Even on the lowest setting, the phone's ringer is far too loud, and on the maximum setting it's deafening! Basically, it's hard to get a sensibly low ring volume that won't embarrass you. As far as I can see, the number buttons 1, 2 and 3 can't be reassigned to your own speed dials (they are preset to answerphone, etc.) which is particularly annoying as in the past I've always used 1 to phone home, 2 for work etc. The camera is frankly pointless, but then the same goes for most mobiles I guess. Even on the maximum resolution, the pictures are horribly grainy, the lens gives a distorted fish-eye view, and it takes forever to save or load the resulting pictures. The phone software has crashed a few times, necessitating removal of the battery for a few seconds before it'll come back to life.

But worst of all (I saved this for last!), it is not possible to turn off the loud and lengthy jingle the phone plays every time it is turned on or switched off! Well, it is possible to stop it, but only by having the phone's normal ring option set to a silent mode! Naturally, this is somewhat ridiculous as most of the time you will want the phone set to use an audible ring tone! It drives me nuts every day, and will be the primary reason why I'm unlikely to buy a Motorola next time.

Summary:
Overall, the E365 is a usefully compact little phone, but let down by all the unnecessary and childish clutter in the menu system and nasty little buttons. And that on/off jingle!!! This phone certainly betrays its Far-East origins, where miniaturization and gimmicks reign supreme.

“The Motorola E365 was a replacement phone for a Sony...”

★★☆☆☆

written by fairydustandashes on 07/11/2004

The Motorola E365 was a replacement phone for a Sony Ericson, bad bad choice. The main draws are the camera and the price. At £80.00 for a camera phone you would think you couldn't go wrong. After a mere few days the screen had been scratched and got a dusty coating on the inside, don't know how. I expect the phone screen to get scratched, its bound to happen but not to the easy extent this one does. When typing a txt message I found that I kept pressing the total escape button, bringing you back to main screen and loosing my txt... no I dont have big fingers but yes, it is annoying. The other appeal was the camera. WOW...not. The camera is ok, that's not the problem. The problem is that you have to keep very still when taking a picture, or the subject does. It's no good for quick snapping or else you get a blur, not very cool. I also found that my phone kept freezing a lot of the time and without anything else to do I had to keep taking the battery out, which obviosly can't be good. Sometimes the alarm clock won't go off and the next day something else wont go as well, this was before I dropped it on the floor. Also, it has bad bounce - as in completely switches itself off and refuses to stay turned on for more then a few seconds. Talk about being hard to get. And for the conclusion, it doesn't look sexy at all, a guys phone if you will. Big and square with none of those lady like curves.

Overall I say this phone is a good one and I like it as this is the type of phone I've always wanted to have - but I had some minor problems with the phone which I've mentioned in the summary of bad points - rest of its features are cool.

The Motorola E365 is a good phone compared to the ones that I have mentioned above. It is one of the best camera phones for that price. And definitely, what most of the reviews that the other reviewers have written is in my experience incorrect!!!
This is one wonderful phone.

★☆☆☆☆

written by Lee Power on 04/10/2004

Well, after a dodgy Nokia 3510 & 7650 I thought I would get a phone from a company with a good reputation, what a mistake to buy a Motorola!

The phones software is so slow to use, The microphone quality is poor & people struggle to hear you on the other end, The screen scratches very easily, The thin paint on the buttons flakes off easily, The battery life is pathetic, The camera takes grainy pictures, The phone can't be set to silent when its charging & you can't get the phone to display a 12 hour clock format whatever you do with the settings.

Now here is the best bit, Motorola's total lack of customer care.

Button 9 died on the keypad after 3 months, No problem & I called Motorola warranty dept up, They sent out a pre paid special delivery envelope the next day & I sent the phone back.
One week later the phone returns with a software upgrade & a dead button 9, I ring Motorola again, another pre paid envelope & another week, The phone comes back fixed this time.
The software upgrade didn't even fix any of the faults mentioned at the start of this review.
3 months pass & the phones software then throws a fit & starts crashing, switching itself on & off & refusing to charge up, another call to Motorola, "Have you called us before?" they ask, "Only twice" was my answer.
Another pre paid envelope & the promise of a 7 working day turn round passed so I phoned them.
First they said they didn't have my phone, They did according to Royal mail track & trace, Then they said we will call you back, They don't bother with that.
You never speak to the same person twice, Every person tells you a different story, They won't pass you over to a supervisor & just want you of the phone as soon as possible.
They can't even tell me what's wrong with my phone or when I might get it back!
This was the first & LAST Motorola product I will buy, I thought Nokia customer care was bad but Motorola beats them hands down!
I have been promised a call by a Motorola supervisor between 9am & 5pm tomorrow, I'm not holding my breath!

written by Sosus on 26/08/2004

The Motorola E365 is a cool mobile phone with a rubbish load of options and most are very cool, good design and it can take a knock which is handy if your all thumbs like me. Love the quality of the camera during the day, slightly less so at night that said to get the most of the camera (and the ring tone) options you really need to get the USB cable and like it up to you Laptop or PC.

The only problems I have is the SMS features which only lets you type 4 or so words in the spell checker option and that can really slow things down (you can turn it off if if you want to spell bad though) and that Bowling Game! What was the point of that rubbish?!?

ALL in all a great phone, better than the last two Nokias I owned and I'm sure I'll get another Motorola when my E365's battery dies for the last time.

written by Stargazer on 11/08/2004

I purchased the Motorola E365 without consulting any reviews just before Christmas 2003 as an upgrade to the irritating S.E.T68i which I never liked.
The E365 is a phone you will either get along with or you won't. Other reviewers have reported various problems with theirs, thankfully I've had no problem whatsoever.
Generally, this Motorola has just about everything that most people would expect in a mobile phone. The few petty criticisms I could list would be a drop in the ocean in comparison to the many fine features it has (I especially like the 'i-tap' predictive text). My advice to potential buyers is simple - visit an outlet and get a demonstration before opting to buy and if you decide to purchase, DO buy a spare battery because you WILL need it.

The keypad of my Motorola E365 has scratched very easy. I find that text messeges get very slow if you are inputting a long message. Picture quality on the camara is good in daylight but only poor in artificial light. I am finding it hard to get a data lead at a good price. No shops have them.

“I bought my E365 online from orange.co.uk in February...”

★★★★☆

written by colinrichards on 02/07/2004

I bought my E365 online from orange.co.uk in February 2004 because I could get it FREE with a promotional minutes+ texts contract package. In general I am happy with it but it does have a few irritating aspects - just like all phones I suppose.

The camera facility is great fun and gives good quality pictures. I found a cable and software on the web so I could download my photos to my PC and then email them. When I was on holiday in May I just took photos with my phone, then downloaded them to my PC and they are fine!

One of the main irritations is that the four scroll key arrows have already been scratched just by my using them to navigate the menus. Most of the four arrows now look like black blobs! And the phone is only a few months old! Has this happened to anyone else? I wonder if Orange would give me a new phone casing under the guarantee ...

As mentioned in other reviews the texting is slow. If I look at the keys not the screen, I can find that I have tapped in the word "prob" expecting the phone to complete it to "problem" and then look at the screen and find that it has missed the first letter so only "rob" is on the screen, so I have to start again!

And the predictive texting offers all sorts of symbols I would never use, like ~ and , which just get in the way of symbols and punctuation marks that I do use!

Also, if I send a photo message, then go to my Outbox to check what I said in it, it takes AGES for that message to open - just because it has a photo in it.

And I find that the funky blue keypad lights go on and off whenever they feel like it. They are supposed to just come on when the ambient light level is low, but there really seems to be no logic as to when they switch on!

But having said all that, the phone still has a lot going for it. It's a good buy if you can get a good deal on it. But I can't wait till my contract ends because I want to get a phone with a movie recorder facility next!

written by rogerB on 01/06/2004

Had the Motorola E365 mobile phone for less than 2 months, very happy with it for all the features.

All was going well until i made the mistake of holding it when going for a 30min lunchtime jog, my hand got a bit sweaty & 2 of the butttons on the phone stopped working. Now cant send text messages, set screensaver, adjust volume.. etc. all i can do is send and recieve calls (although i can't access the address book).

good phone, but don't hold it on your hand for a long period of time on a hot day, or you'll invalidate the warranty (thanks, motorola).

“Me and my mate both bought one of these Motorola E365...”

★★★★☆

written by miffman on 13/05/2004

Me and my mate both bought one of these Motorola E365 mobile phones at the same time, never having read or heard about them.

Lets start on the camera, the main selling point of this phone.
Its a good quality camera, with 3 resolution modes and 2 light modes (it has a low-light mode where it will provide a good picture in slightly dark light). It would have been better with a zoom, but thats not too much of a problem. I have found sometimes though, that when i click to go on camera or view a picture, it will say 'Please wait' then just quit back to where i was (i.e. menu). This can be very annoying when you are trying to show people your pics.
Memory on it is quality, i think it is 2mb shared, i've got around 80 pics on there and 5 ringtones, and still have space for more.

Menu: Can be irritating, when you click menu you get a 9 options, then clicking each one will give you more. To view your pictures, you must click menu, more, media centre, photo album, then your album.. would have been better with an option on the main menu.

Texting: Is ok once you turn predictive text off (although i've never used it before on any phone, but my friend has and he likes it).. it goes fast at first, but then starts to slow down, and you find yourself hitting a button 3 times, only to see its still on the last word

Screen: Is very large, with great color. Tip though: keep the protective cover on if you get one, i've dented and scratched mine a lot lol.
One bad point, which happened on both phones, is they get dust in them. Mine has a lot in the top left corner, which you can see very badly when the light is off, most of it disappeares when you turn the light on, but you can still see some.

Battery: Mine will last maybe 3 days off a full charge, when im not using it much. If i'm using it it will go about 2 days.

Sound: Phone Call.. Seems quiet at first until you get it in the right place on your ear, then it is fine. Ringtones.. Most of the standard ones are loud, easily heard via. the back speaker.

WAP: I use this a lot, very easy to use, but sometimes when you disconnect, it stays connected and you need to turn your phone off to get it to disconnect. One time i missed that it was still connected and it charged me £3 before i realised.

“I bought this Motorola E365 mobile phone 2 months ago...”

★★★☆☆

written by hezier on 05/05/2004

I bought this Motorola E365 mobile phone 2 months ago and have just ordered a new one. Despite the good picture quality and the sleek look of the E365, it is not very useful as a PHONE. Admittedly, part of the problem I have with this phone is the network I am on - Orange. I get no coverage at my house and receieve texts sometimes days after they were sent. But the phone is just so slow! You press a button and it can take 2 seconds to work - a long time when you're talking about a phone. The texting on this phone is awful; it uses a new type of predictive input called iTap. Texting is very frustrating and also slow, so much so that I text on my old, broken phone! Having said that, there are many good points to the E365. The camera is good, if not also a little slow on the best quality setting (!), the graphics on the screen are good, there is an alarm clock that you can set to go off weekly or daily or just once, there are a few games and a couple of them are fun, there is GPRS WAP Internet and the phone is very slim-looking and stylish. If found that, especially when I just got it, the phone had a tendancy to "crash" and need to be switched on and off again which is annoying. Overall this is a fairly good phone but definitely not for me!
