“Tesco Rip off Insurance”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 28/03/2015

A few yrs back took out this insurance for my boxer a basic policy which had limit of £4000.00 it stated it was for people that did not make unnecessary claims & that fees should be reasonable & necessary with that they promised the policy would not go up because of age or if you make a claim. The policy went up very unreasonable after the dog reached 7yrs last year was £130.00pm this year increase to £197.00pm the ombudsman is currently looking into it if you have same problem contact the ombudsman. This year they have removed small print of claims needing to be reasonable & necessary. Unless you want a mortgage as your dogs gets older I would avoid this one.

Hi, I made the mistake of taking out tesco pet insurance a few years ago only because they seemed reasonable....at the time....We started by paying £18.50 pm which increased dramatically because we made a claim. This year the renewal price is £167.50 pm. I understand that the premium will increase as with car & house insurance if you make a claim but this is extortionate. It is wrong that they can demand this increase because they know you cannot go elsewhere like you can with other insurances. Surely there is a regulator to control this. I will take your advice and contact the ombudsman thank you.

“review on the help of the chat live”

★★☆☆☆

written by Emerson143 on 14/02/2015

when you chat to the person online all they keep telling you to do is ring their 0845 num which is no help at all considering that number is expensive and most other insurance companies are free phone numbers

“total rip off. they double the premium every year!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by fehrbehr on 31/01/2015

Tesco start you off on a super cheap intro package but every year, regardless of claims, they up it by at least 50%. My cat policy was at £56 last year and this yuear has come in at £105!! SERIOUSLY? when I phone to complain I was told 'too bad'. also, they REFUSE to put my newest cat on the same policy as the other two cats so I can get the multi pet discount. AVOID!

Same for dogs, insured my puppy last year 28 a month. This year they wanted 31 BUT can get a new identical policy with them for 15 a month. Absolute rip off on renewals. I've made no claims so can go elsewhere, the customer service rep was useless al due to online discounts apparently!!!!

“Refusal of claim despite expert vet opinion ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Wise114 on 26/11/2014

both my dogs have been insured with tescos. The oldest one for 7 years. He has developed a severe grass allergy and needs immunotherapy but tescos have refused the claim on the basis that he once got steroid tablets back in 2010?! They have now had 2 letters from the senior vet in the practice and still have refused to pay. UTTER JOKE'!

“Customer service nightmare”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Octavio104 on 01/11/2014

I have had pet insurance for a few years with Tesco but not claimed. The renewal came in and like so many others it had gone up a lot. I called to cancel and was advised it would be cancelled and I had one last Direct debit to be made. I allowed this and then cancelled the D/D. I then received a letter saying my bank had declined the payment for a request after the insurance was cancelled. I again called Customer service and they said oh it was letters generated by a computer and ignore it my insurance was cancelled. Guess what I got another more threatening letter saying as I had taken no action on paying my insurance was now cancelled. All I hope is that I do not shown as a bad risk. Avoid them others are cheaper and better.

“total lack of customer loyalty”

★☆☆☆☆

written by srn505 on 23/10/2014

Have had my dog jack insured with tesco for 7 years, with no claims whatsoever, my 8 th year premium has gone up by over 20%, prices rise you may say, but complaints dept finally admitted that my cover for a new customer with the same dog would be £5 less per month with also currently £30 of free tesco vouchers!!. When i asked complaints to do something about this i was offered £20 of tesco vouchers or a monthly reduction of about a £1,seems to be a form of negative no claims bonus.

“19 year old cat, insured with Tesco for his entire...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RodneyWright171 on 15/10/2014

19 year old cat, insured with Tesco for his entire life and now I discover that conditions are not paid out for after 12 months...I guess I should have read the small print but at nearly £40 a month I could have covered the cost of the treatment by saving up. Just feels like a really awful thing to do to people; I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford the cost of his ongoing renal treatment but what about those who can't and have to rely on their insurance? My advice is to set up an account and pay yourself a direct debit the same value as the insurance premium. Cold heartedpeople.

“Beware of changes to the policy”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DarrenBaxter496 on 26/09/2014

I took out a policy 10+ years ago. A couple of months ago my dear pet died and the vet bill was £150 which included cremation. I read Tesco policy online which stated it would pay £120 towards death and cremation costs. However, when I tried to claim, Tesco would not pay out. They said it was not covered by the policy as dated 2004. Don't be caught out and don't assume that "your" policy is the one that is shown as being current on the provider's website. I think they should send a complete policy to the customer on an annual basis - rather than the few updated pages you typically receive. Comparisons of your policy and their current one should also be pointed out so that you can make an informed choice about staying with the provider or not. My policy had increased over the years from £12/month to £50/month.

“Professional, kind and helpful staff”

★★★★★

written by bfWilkinson23 on 18/09/2014

My dog was hit by a car recently (and luckily survived due to excellent veterinary care). While the whole experience was very worrying and stressful it was made much easier to cope with the by the incredibly professional and knowledgeable staff at Tesco Pet Insurance Because my claim dealt with two aspects of a claim (vet care and third part liability for the car driver) I have had to deal with two separate Claims departments, but they were both equally kind, helpful and informative, making it very easy for me to take the right steps to get everything sorted. I have had my dogs covered with Tesco for years and every renewal date I have been contacted by other providers offering cheaper cover but I am so so glad that I did not move away! Thank you so much, you never want to have to use a service like this, but when you do it's great that people make it as straightforward as possible for you.

“Paid for many years no claims made on Tesco's pet...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Buddy2526 on 29/08/2014

I feel I have been ripped off! I paid for many years tesco's pet insurance with no claims made on my policy. Increased this year double the cost due to my dog being 11. Then to be told I was being charged extra because of others. I was disgusted. This I feel is discrimination. How can the policy double? Being a responsible dog owner I take great care where I walk my dog what he eats and regular required treatment to ensure he is fit. I was assured some one would ring me, as I asked that an official complaint be registered re my grievance. Guess what after promising this would happen, Surprise Surprise no communication until today when I received the letter saying my policy was now cancelled and the direct debits would no longer be taken. I would now advise anyone to open a savings account and invest the monies towards any vet bills. Definitely do not insure your dog with Tesco's, after nearly 10 years I at least expected a courtesy telephone call.

“SUCK YOU IN THEN SPIT YOU OUT”

★☆☆☆☆

written by margw on 14/08/2014

The quote I had for my pedigree cat was good and thank goodness I did not have to claim. My renewal for my second year came through and it had gone up 75%.I was disgusted. I phoned to cancel my policy and was told they would ring me back, that call never arrived so I phoned again as was told they could look for a cheaper quote!! WHY didn't they do that in the first place. Don't touch them they are a rip off. To add insult to injury I then had a feed back survey over the phone and when I answered disappointed to all the questions they said they were sorry that I had not answered the question correctly and my call would not count!!

“Won't pay out”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 474York on 07/08/2014

Tesco would not pay out when we claimed for a dental abscess. They said it is classed as general maintenance of the dog such as fleas and worming. This is not true because you can prevent fleas and worming you cannot prevent an abscess which is an infection and unpreventable. We took out the most expensive policy which seems pointless if they make excuses not to pay out when needed. My dogs eye swelled up and burst as a result but Tesco did not want to know.

Awful customer service. Very inflexible and very difficult to cancel the policy. They won't let you close it and won't let you pay in any other way except direct debit. They don't listen at all.Very frustrating.

“Extortionate Price Renewal”

★☆☆☆☆

written by StanleyP on 28/07/2014

I took out an annual pet insurance with Tesco several years ago the original cost was £38. Now my dog has reached the age of thirteen and has had a few operations the cost has risen to £98.40 per month. They also refused to pay for his latest operation as it was classified as an existing condition. I appreciate that I should have read the small print - and opted for the Life Time Cover - something that is not widely promoted by insurance companies as a rule, so my advise would be to never take out an annual policy for your pet. Also when I asked if I could upgrade I was refused as my pet had an existing condition. Considering Tesco charge an excess fee of £60 I do feel their prices are unacceptably high, they know pet owners are vulnerable & will pay whatever is necessary.

“No Quibble service”

★★★★☆

written by Alex_J on 25/07/2014

I am a German boxer lover and this is my 3rd one. Boxers are prone to injuries or various illnesses so I dealt with lots of insurers in the past. Currently I am with Tesco on their Superior cover and unfortunately there were bills, high bills. Though it takes them a while to process claims, they paid all without any problems. One occasion when I had to write to them to accept new injury (I had to supply supporting documentation and letter from the vets) which they previously classified as existing, though it took them a while to process, they accepted without any quibbles and paid up. My insurance premium did go up last year, but I would probably get the same from every other insurer bearing in mind the costs so far. It is the no fuss payments that impressed me enough to write a good review. When I contacted customer services is certainly not "personal" and mostly they were just reading off the screen, but they were never rude, and I got the results eventually. So 4 stars instead of 5.

“APPALLING CUSTOMER SERVICE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by bsShea498 on 17/06/2014

Vet contacted insurer to establish if treatment - namely xrays (diagnostics) would be covered to establish what was wrong with my pet.It took several calls by my vet to Tesco Pet Insurance and the need to fax my pet's medical history not once but twice as they denied having received it the 1st time and then for them to decide that as I had taken my pet to the vet in 2013 as he was limping the claim was denied as they had decided that my pet had a pre existing condition.I would like to know what that pre existing condition was, as it had not even been diagnosed by my vet.How could they determine that fact? I am extremely disappointed by the level of customer service and do not feel that as a customer i have been treated fairly.

“First Class Service”

★★★★★

written by Monaghanra165 on 22/05/2014

Highly recommended, only had policy 11 months but had to make a claim. Despite only paying £12.50 monthly they settled a claim for nearly £2500.00 Claim dealt with quickly, girl on phone really polite and helpful. Cannot understand negative reviews if you read policy conditions it is clear what is covered. Highly recommended, just renewed again.

I thought tesco were a little on the expensive side, but just as I was about to cancel my cat fell ill. There were 2 separate claims put in and they covered the cost total £2000 without any hassle. The customer service were very helpful and sympathetic. I will stay with Tesco for life.

“Do not use tesco insurance if your dog has EVER been ill!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Faganrh1954 on 16/05/2014

My dog accidently scratched his eye with his dew claw- he had done this a year previously with another insurer. Because of this Tesco refused to pay because it is the same condition even though it is not a continuing condition. So if your dog has EVER had an illness or accident, do not use Tesco pet insurance as they will not pay if it happens again.
