Written on: 04/08/2006 by gus72 (1 review written)

I received a £1250 bill from British gas for six months (during the summer), so basically, just for hot water and the hob? It is an absolute scandal! We are going to have to pay it as we are now being threatened with court… Read Full Review

“I feel like a lightweight complainer in comparison to...”

Written on: 05/07/2006 by VicP (1 review written)

I feel like a lightweight complainer in comparison to the other reviews about British Gas, but I had merely made an appointment for a quote to have central heating installed. I finished work early and waited in for the allotted 2 hours, and no-one came. I called to complain and was told the sales rep would call me back and explain. The following day I had a call from the call centre. The sales rep was ill the day before, and unfortunately the manager had not got the message and been able to… Read Full Review

“Called British Gas one Saturday when my boiler broke...”

Written on: 15/03/2006 by xen0n (1 review written)

Called British Gas one Saturday when my boiler broke down, after purchasing their top cover. They told me I had to be home from 1 - 6 so I obediently ruined my Sunday. Then they called to say they had got a bit busy and that they couldn't make it (some bad weather - we wouldn't expect that in mid-march would we). I was leaving the country for a week and spent that week worrying if my pipes would burst. When I got back, I called again and they said they would be out two days later. I asked… Read Full Review

“British Gas was relatively cheap when the service was...”

Written on: 08/02/2006 by Aslimd (1 review written)

British Gas was relatively cheap when the service was first set up but prices have increased year on year but service has dropped and dropped.
My Boiler was brand new when I took the cover out. Since the first problem occurred there has been a snowball effect all due to the lack of knowledge some of the BG engineers have on repairing boilers.
My boiler is a near write off and I currently write this review with no heat!!
What makes the service so bad is when you book an engineer you could wait… Read Full Review

“I have the British Gas home care 300 package which is...”

Written on: 02/02/2006 by deefer (4 reviews written)

I have the British Gas home care 300 package which is insurance for the boiler, plumbing and drains at £20 something a month.

For 3 years I have paid this, and I have never needed to call them until recently....
I have (and still have) a blocked toilet, so I called British Gas who sent an engineer out that afternoon, brilliant.
After spending a few minutes in the bathroom, he told me that as the suite is new I'm not covered with my insurance, but bless him, he could do it for me for £100.

“I have used the British Gas Boiler Cover (Used to be...”

Written on: 22/12/2005 by E M (1 review written)

I have used the British Gas Boiler Cover (Used to be Celsia 3 star cover) service for 12 or so years, and up until this year it used to be great. The engineers would turn up within 24 hours, and then return within 12 hours with any parts required to fix the problem.

Now, and I don't know why, it takes them 5 days to turn up (and they often miss the appointment). They seem very low quality, and cannot resolve a problem or get parts quickly. Almost as annoying as not having any heating is the… Read Full Review

Hackneyguy's Response to E M's Review

I too live in London and have had very similar experience with their service to my boiler which they fitted three years ago including a gas leak due to them incorrectly fitting something. I do wish they would turn up when expected within 24 hours and with the part !

I'm having exactly the same problem (since xmas!!) where they have missed appointments, turned up late, and not fixed the problem even on the fourth (eventual) visit. I think it's extremely shoddy service and am at present (after having to phone up to chase THEM innumerable times) wondering how best to get out of the HomeCare contract I recently signed up for! Shocking (lack of) service!!

Written on: 22/11/2005 by patrick dodds (2 reviews written)

Whilst I am of course overjoyed to pay through the nose for the privelege of a British Gas engineer coming to repair my boiler on only 24 hours notice, this system is rather dependent on said engineer turning up. And offering a five hour slot and then not showing or telephoning isn't, in my view, acceptable… Read Full Review

Waterlily1882's Response to patrick dodds's Review

I used to work weekends in the department at British Gas that dealt with appointments for Home Care and just thought I would mention a few things. Yes the service may appear to be expensive, but when you have a breakdown the engineer is more often than not with you within 24 hours (try getting someone out of the Yellow Pages to turn up on Christmas Day and see how much that costs, if they will come out at all that is) British Gas have various time slots available, and priority is given for those who are "at risk" if you have a dripping radiator and a job comes in with an elderly person with no other form of heating or water then yes that job is going to be done before yours. If having to stay in is a major problem, say you have the school run to do, or an appt to attend then explain this to the Customer Service Assistant and they will inform the engineer of when you are not available or you can request the engineer to call 15 minutes before he gets to you. . In all cases of an engineer being delayed or unable to visit (this can happen when the job requires more work than first anticipated. However sometimes incorrect telephone numbers are on the records, my advice when you call, confirm that they have the correct number. Another problem is if you have call barring that can prevent them from contacting you to.

Another really frustrating thing as a call centre operative was when customers would call up and say they have no heat or hot water and the engineer gets there and the problem is something completely different, causing delays for all the other customers. One classic example is when someone called up claiming to be disabled and needing their heating asap, the engineer gets there and the only thing disabling the customer was the immense quantity of alcohol consumed rendering them incapable of actually turning their heating on (not really an emergency is it? but the customer who gets put off until the next day because of it isn't impressed). Yes it's a 24 hour service but not for general repairs the evening and night service is for emergencies only and this should all be explained when you first take out the contract (and is followed up with the literature sent out to you).

I could rant on forever about the lies some customers tell to try and get their appointment when they want it, the times engineers turn up and no-one is home and then they call back claiming that no-one has visited, the list is endless but seeing as I don't work there anymore I don't need the stress (laughs).

My advice is if you are not happy with the service then tell someone at British Gas, they do have a very effective complaints procedure that believe it or not is followed.

Written on: 21/01/2004 by pnadin (122 reviews written)

I saved money by getting my Gas and Electric from one supplier (British Gas). You probably need to change supplier every month to ensure you have the cheapest deal.

Why is it that all the suppliers can prove they are the cheapest ???… Read Full Review
