After 14 years of continuous use of my Waterside MC250, I have had one hose replaced, and now it has started to be noisy (suspect a bearing on its way).

Culligan will supply gaskets and seals at reasonable cost. However, if you check the web for American sites dealing with softeners, there is lots of information for doing self service.
The Kenmore valve is identical, but uses a microswitch in place of the electronic optical position sensor used by Culligan. Valve strip and assembly and Service instructions are identical. I bought my MC250E on eBay 3 years ago, gave it a good service and its been fine ever since. Salt corrosion is a common problem but application of Vaseline to strategic places, (particularly the sensor pcb on the left of the valve) will prevent this. I gleaned all my information from the Web and can do a full service, mainly applying silicone grease to the seals, in less than 20 minutes.
Hope this gives someone confidence to have a go themselves.

Can you supply a link to the American sites please?

This is a fairly expensive softener. I'd had two old manual Waterside machines at my previous addresses so went for them again. WHAT A MISTAKE! Mine never worked properly from day one, poor softness, breaking down a lot, palmed off by Culligan Customer Services. By the time I could prove it was faulty the years warranty had expired. They never were able to fix it. Only choice is to buy a Konetico and start again.

Dear Fayerfield,
As the manufacturer of your MC250, I have read your review and would like to take this opportunity to say that I am disappointed to hear about your experience. When the MC250 was originally launched, it heralded a major breakthrough in water softener design, bringing electronic control, a compact footprint and ease of use to the broader market. Whilst the MC250 was revolutionary in its time, the modern equivalent is far removed from those early days. Development in electronics means that the Waterside machines of today are more efficient and flexible than ever before, easier to use and supplied with an industry leading 5 years parts and a full 2 years on-site labour warranty.
The Waterside brand has since July 2010 been owned by BWT, Europe’s number one water technology group, and is supported across Europe by a team of sales and service professionals on hand to offer advice and support in choosing, installing and servicing the whole range of BWT water softeners.
Customer service and feedback is important to us and if you would like to add any more comments on this matter, please call 01376 334200 or e-mail me directly at [email protected].
Yours Sincerely,

I had issues with the header part on this Waterside MC250, flooded the kitchen and was told afterwards to fit a pressure reducing valve, this was not mentioned at all on the free installation check. Would never buy again, service frankly is poor and I find it is over priced.

Would not recommend. Failed immediately after installation. Pressure below 5 bar blew the head resulting in kitchen flooding. Had to have a pressure reducing valve installed.

I probably would think twice before buying a waterside softener again. Expensive engineer call out and the head seems to fail about every 2 years. Told by the engineer that we needed a pressure reducing valve and yet this is supposedly rated to 5 bar.

When the Waterside MC250 works its fine. Small enough to hide in a cupboard and the only maintenance required is to fill the system with salt tablets. I have owned the MC250 Ultra for just over 4 years and in this time it has failed twice. First after 18 months with necessitating a new valve, motor and minor items total cost in 2005 was £110.10 for the repair. The latest fault again is with the motor and valve so with inflation to price will be near £150.

Not worth the money. Don't bother with this water softener. Leaked when first installed. Apparently our water pressure was too high, although we had previously been told by a plumber that our water pressure was low. So we had to pay to have a reducer fitted. Worked OK for a couple of years and then the motor packed up.

This chimes exactly with my review of the MC 350. It's only plumbers who seem to install these machines - any decent water softener supplier wouldn't touch them I've heard?

Although my Waterside MC250 works well and requires nothing more than the salt replenishing and the Low Salt buzzer (see bad points) turning off, it is prone to leaks and the service call-out charge is high as is the cost of spare parts. It can also take several weeks for an engineer to be available, during which time of course you are without softened water.

If I'd known the expensive valve mechanism wasn't Fleck, I wouldn't have chosen this particular product. On the shelf one water softener looks much the same as the next. Once you buy a Waterside/Culligan product you are locked into the sole supplier for parts and technical information. Try asking for a parts list before you buy.
