“I broke down in Tesco car park, Tesco offer RAC...”

★★☆☆☆

written by j3nn4 on 05/03/2010

I broke down in Tesco car park, Tesco offer RAC breakdown cover to its customers so I'm not a paid member. However after my experience with RAC I decided never to join up with them!!!

They took just over an hour to arrive, the guy was pretty rude to be honest and assumed I'd purposely broken down at Tesco to use the free RAC cover. He was asking a lot of questions about where I was from, where I'd been going and then accused me of not even being a Tesco's customer!! The bag of shopping didn't give it away apparently...

He wanted to know where I got the car serviced, said it hadn't been maintained properly and that it was my piston rings that needed replacing. He also said they couldn't tow the car to my home (which was fair enough as I actually lived miles away and was only in the area on short term contract work)so I'd have to arrange something else..then he left!

I did manage to get the car home and took it to a garage, it turned out that a gearbox mount bolt had worked loose which was causing the juddering/noises. So all in all the RAC guy took a long time to arrive, was rude to me, diagnosed the fault incorrectly and left me in the car park!

I took out breakdown cover the next week and it WASN'T with RAC!!

“I just had to get RAC out for a problem with my car....”

★★★★★

written by on 28/02/2010

I just had to get RAC out for a problem with my car. Loose alternator belt whining(not a breakdown but was worried about damaging the engine if i drove it).I text them and they dealt with me swifty and courtiously over text messaging. Within HALF HOUR they were there to help me, when i was two hours from home! They fixed the problem there and then. Graham the patrol guy was ace and made sure that i knew what was wrong with the car and fixed it no problem! They have made my day and saved my beautiful pug!

Also last year my car overheated...rang RAC..out within the hour...Excellent customer service...towed my car 2 hours home!

Price wise: £70 for the year...not too bad considering ive already had two call outs including a tow 2 hours home...would have cost me alot more for a mechanic or other tow company for a one off call out.

Its a shame that not more people who have good service write their review on here, but i guess more people like to complain rather than say good things on these things.

5 STAR ALL ROUND FOR RAC SERVICE FOR ME!

“RAC's first contact response rate is appalling. Had a...”

written by friendly2 on 25/02/2010

RAC's first contact response rate is appalling. Had a dreadful experience (single woman and teenage son) when returning from holiday abroad and picking up my car at 11.00pm which made awful grating noises. Not wanting to go onto the motorway at that time I called RAC for assistance. It took over 1 hour 15 minutes for the call to be answered. This is appalling - it was gone midnight on a relatively quiet night, but the number of cars driving into the layby and then off again was disturbing.
The woman who eventually answered the phone was very helpful as was the patrol man.
I've complained to the RAC in writing twice about the lack of customer response (and the importance of your call being answered and listened to as soon as possible) but have had no acknowledgement of the problem. I also requested their target response to first call times as this is a pre-requisite for a response service; no information was forthcoming.
I would NEVER renew my membership, nor recommend anybody I knew from using them.
Steer well clear - I'm now going back to Green Flag!!

written by Davi99 on 19/02/2010

Tried to get through to the RAC on a Saturday afternoon when my bike failed to start due to flat battery. I couldnt even get through to speak to anyone. A recorded message said that they were really busy and so if it was really urgent to stay on line otherwise to call back later. It said that all weekend every time I called. I suppose it did mean I bought myself a battery optimiser which is a handy device:-)

written by pin4apple on 18/02/2010

I have to comment as that it always seems people only leave reviews to complain, wether its holidays or this. RAC WERE FANTASTIC now i know why i left the AA. I broke down in London, everything shut down, and all electrics, i panicked had to get home 70 miles away with 2 kids, called them out, told me 2~3 hr wait. Ok i will get some food, called me back 5 mins later they will be with me in 10 mins. I was gobsmacked. The chap who came out, got my car going straight away, gave me advice and wathced me drive off and followed me for a bit, my kids werent babies byt he way they are 8 and 11 so they didnt rush out because of that reason and they told me 2~3 hrs after i told them about the kids. I am sooooo impressed i had to leave this review. So they are not all bad, but like i said people only leave comments to complain as they are bitter and need to get that out to other people, so dont be put off i think RAC are very good, second time ive called them out and the first time i only has to wait 25 mins and again very impressed then too

The Rac are awful! I have had to call them out 4 times regarding the same problem. A coil needed to be fitted and they fitted a faulty coil! They have now said that I have used my allowance of call outs. I didnt know there was an allowance. I recently called them out again and had to wait 3 hours and 15 minutes even though i had 15 minutes previously been discharged from hospital and am 33 weeks pregnant. I have rung customer care and their customar service is absolutely appalling! Would never recommend.

“I've used all 3 major breakdown services and this one...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by bubbasparks on 08/02/2010

I've used all 3 major breakdown services and this one is the worst. Broke down on the motorway and took over 2 hours for recovery. Recovery vehicle broke down so had to wait another 3 hours for another recovery vehicle. Since my local garage was closed for the weekend, they advised I have my car towed home and they would tow it to my local garage on Monday since it was within 10 mile round trip of my house. Monday came and surprise surprise they refused cos on there system, the garage now measured 12 miles. I'm sure they measured it to stop off at a burger bar. This was my worst experience but obviously not the only problem. Competition not great but this company makes them look a hundred times better.

written by on 30/01/2010

I haver been a loyal member for 15 years and have always had a van and car covered, on a couple of occasions i have had to have my van towed, no problem for the RAC, that is until a couple of days ago when i broke down in my Iveco van, a patrol was sent out could not fix the problem, then i was informed i would be charged to be towed home!!, when my wife rang customer services thinking there must be some mistake she was told we did not have a commercial policy which i did not know existed, this also raises the question of why they came out to me at all, RAC commercial charged me £244.00 despite the fact i have rescue and recovery, i was disgusted but as it was 6pm on a Saturday night i had little choice, just in case anyone is wondering this is the first time i have called RAC in 2 years. I will never go with RAC again and would not recommend them.

written by on 28/01/2010

I waited three hours in the freezing cold weather alone on the side of the A406, for the RAC to eventually send in a contractor to rescue me.

The website says they aim to reach you in 40 minutes, with priority to special circumstances. Really ?

my complaining has so far got me only a very unsympathetic and careless response.
I am changing my provider, so far all the quotes I have got are cheaper.

what do you expect in this cold weather, you are probably not the only one breaking down

Never (and I mean NEVER!) give the RAC your credit or debit card details unless you are prepared to sign up for LIFE. If my experience is anything to go by, you will never be allowed to leave, even if you have no car to cover any more.

They use CPA (continuous payment authority) to remove funds from your account even if you cancel your membership. Worse still the price goes up dramatically after the first year.

written by shona0done on 23/01/2010

I have been with RAC since November 2006 and have paid on time by direct debit evey month. My car broke down today at the side of a dual carraige way, I rang RAC and was told they were very busy and it could be up to 2 and a half hours till someone reached me, 3 hours later I rang RAC to see how long they would be and the person on the phone hung up, by this time it was very dark and very cold, I rang a local garage out of hours and was towed away within 10 minutes, 4 hours later the mechanic phoned me to say he was on his way!! sorry RAC you were too slow and left me vulnerable at the roadside, what a disgrace! will be asking for my money back when the complaints department open on Monday. My advice "don't join RAC"

I wouldn't give them any stars in the review if it would let me!

★★★★★

written by francarter on 12/01/2010

I have the RAC cover through the Barclays Additions account. I called them out on a very snowy day for a home start - thought it would be ages. They quoted 1hr30. 10 minutes later the mechanic called and said he's be there in half an hour! He arrived exactly half an hour later. He was very friendly and efficient, answered all of my questions and was obviously very passionate about his job. Best service we've ever had from an emergency breakdown company.

“I was stranded for 4 hours in the middle of nowhere...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/01/2010

I was stranded for 4 hours in the middle of nowhere with my 3 year old twins, I ended up having to call the Police to help me. I called the RAC in total for 1 hour and 45 minutes using the number I had on correspondence, when they could not find me they said they had to terminate the call !!!!! I ended up holding and recalling 4 times !!!. I was told numerous times they could not find me on their system. The Police called them on my behalf and still got nowhere. In the end after holding for a further 29 mins and being put through to a Supervisor I was told I was fully covered but due to the fact they had 2 systems and I was only some of the lesser trained staff would not have known. Finally help arrived and I was expected to drive the car with kids in for 40 mins being towed, despite the Police advising they send a tow truck as car undrivable. It took another 30 mins for another RAC man to arrive. Appreciate they are busy with this unforseen weather.. had it taken 4 hours to be rescued fine, but 2 hours to get through to a member of staff who knew their system was UNBELIVEABLE. I have emailed the CEO, and suggested the first thing staff do is check BOTH systems. To add we were stranded in SNOW ! Luckily for us my heater still worked. Also to add, I was advised to STAY with the vehicle however on arrival of the RAC man he told me I should have got a taxi home and left the vehicle or my husband should have come to me and taken me home... Missing the point do I not have the insurance for THEM to rescue me not someone else ?

“The RAC are administratively inept and this can lead...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/01/2010

The RAC are administratively inept and this can lead to problems with cover and receiving documentation. Their customer relations are appalling and I would never deal with them again.

My experience is that when I first took cover out they failed to tell me that commercial vans weren't covered, and this was only mentioned in print that is so small I missed it for the first year, paying for non-existent cover. (Also, they'd sent our membership cards and paperwork to the wrong address so it was a long time before we actually received any paperwork to check.)

When I realised on renewal that they didn't cover commercial vans I contacted them and they offered us van cover for an extra fee. However, they failed to tell us that they stopped including this extra cover the following year, so we continued renewing in response to their 'Relax - you're covered' mailing for a further two years, oblivious to the fact that they'd cancelled cover for our main vehicle.

It was only when renewing in year four that I noticed the incy-wincy small print referring to their policy of not covering commercial vehicles and I rang up to double-check that we were still covered as per our standing arrangement. They told us that we hadn't been covered for 18 months, since they had contracted that part of the business out. Noone had informed us and I felt furious that we had been paying for cover we hadn't actually had. I demanded a refund but they were extremely shirty and refused any sort of refund, even though the second time I rang, the women I spoke to agreed with me that the warning was 'very easily missed'.

So two things: 1) if you have a commercial vehicle the AA cover this automatically with no surcharges and we have gone back to them even though they are by no means perfect 2) the RAC couldn't organise a p***up in a brewery and their idea of customer relations is to flatly refuse any sort of compensation when they have charged for non-existent cover.

written by Soofoo on 31/12/2009

Had a dreadful experience with the RAC on Boxing Day - they didn't answer the phone for THREE HOURS. We have three small children and we were left standing in the snow until they finally arrived.

We have upgraded our policy and they charged us £50 over the online price as we are existing customers who bought our policy in November.

Once our policy expires I will never use them again and will advise others not to also.

I recently had a breakdown and had the misfortune to require help from this shower of chancers,
I was left in a queue for 30 mins at 11pm only to be told by an operator this is because AVIVA who own the RAC closed down their Glasgow office costing 100 jobs in the process to cut costs and havent bothered replacing the staff at their 2 call centres in England,
The person I spoke to had NO geographical knowledge and spoke using company jargon which is a pet hate,
The patrolman smelled and was rude and obnoxious,
Membership duly cancelled !!!

I found this review not helpful because...
<br/>
<br/>The comments here are totally irrelevant. I actually work in the Glasgow office for Aviva, and:
<br/>A: It's not shut down because I work there
<br/>and B: We work for insurance, not vehicle breakdown.
<br/>
<br/>Totally irrelevant.

“I bought full UK RAC cover before christmas last year...”

written by on 04/11/2009

I bought full UK RAC cover before christmas last year when I was due to do a long distance journey - just to be on the safe side. Had an rta just outside Colchester, thank goodness we were ok - also relieved that someone would come to get us.

Could I get through to the RAC switchboard. No. Not at all. Kept trying. No one answered. Eventually my mate (whose dad had Green Flag cover) called them up to see if they could sort us out. Had to pay £45 but they gave us a free yearly policy with that. Call centre very helpful, sent a guy out to us within 35 mins (not bad for that time of year.) Meanwhile I saw an RAC van parked up at the next service station. Fat lot of good that was.

What a brilliant experience! My annpoying Vauxhall Astra Twin Top roof would not close. The people I spoke to at RAC were brilliant - told me when to expect the patrolman, made sure I was safe and checked to see if they could help me fix the problem over the phone.

When the patrolman came out he arrived on time and fixed it really quickly, telling me what he was doing, why he was doing it, how to do it myself if it went wrong again. Brilliant!

I love the RAC!

written by Djh777 on 09/09/2009

RAC's customer service is a disgrace. I have just had a full 12 month membership removed from my bank after cancelling two months ago. having returned from holiday to find the money removed I called them only to be told we have gone past a 14 day cooling off period?? we were under the impression the policy had been cancelled when we called them in June and had no communication from them until they took money from our bank. They are now asking me to prove I made the call back in June!! This company is adisgrace and I would warn anyone who enters into any agreement with them to be extremely careful as once they have you, getting out is an absolute nightmare. You have been warned.
